Perceived Motivation And Evaluation: Effects Of Intention Cues And Effort Cues On Attribution Of Responsibility And Evaluate Judgements Of Elementary School Teachers, Mary Ann Ford

Open Access Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between responsibility ascriptions and teacher evaluations of pupils' achievements, emphasizing the examination of differential intention and effort effects. The purpose of this study was to clarify distinctions between information about "intention" and information about "effort" that are suggested by the underlying theory of attribution but have been neglected in prior experimental tests of the theory. An additional purpose of the study was an examination of the theoretical assumption that ascriptions of responsibility mediate evaluative judgments.

It was hypothesized that both situational and motivational cues would affect evaluative judgments. It was predicted that locus of outcome …

A Mechanism Of Action Of Gold In Rheumatoid Arthritis. A Biochemical And Morphological Investigation Of The Direct Effect Of Gold Sodium Thiomalate (Gst) On Human Synovial Cells In Culture, Ronald Lee Goldberg

Open Access Dissertations

Gold sodium thiomalate (GST) effects on cultured rheumatoid synovial cells were used as a model to investigate a mechanism which can explain clinical benefits gained by patients from gold therapy. Synovial tissue obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis who were undergoing reconstructive joint surgery was used to obtain explant culture of synovial cells. The experiments described were performed on growing monolayer cultures during the second to fifth passages. Synovial cells were exposed to GST at pharmacologically relevant concentrations (10-100 uM). Vacuoles were found by phase contrast microscopy in synovial cells in culture after 2 days of exposure to 100 uM …

The Effects Of Hue And Lightness Upon Color Preference And Their Relationship To Five Manifest Needs, Elaine Puntch Gelineau Jan 1980

The Effects Of Hue And Lightness Upon Color Preference And Their Relationship To Five Manifest Needs, Elaine Puntch Gelineau

Open Access Dissertations

A three-part investigation was conducted in an effort to begin to understand the psychological meaning of color preference behavior. Phase 1 used a Q-sort technique to assess intraindividual stability of preference judgments over a five-week interval. Phase 2 used principal components analysis to discern the manner in which preference judgments were being made. Phase 3 used canonical correlation analysis to evaluate a hypothesized relationship between color preference and personality; with five scales from the Personality Research Form, purported to measure manifest needs, serving as the criterion measure. Munsell standard papers, a standard light source, and a screening test for color …

An Investigation Of Grief And Adaptation In Parents Whose Children Have Died From Cancer, Therese Ann Rando Jan 1980

An Investigation Of Grief And Adaptation In Parents Whose Children Have Died From Cancer, Therese Ann Rando

Open Access Dissertations

In an effort to investigate parental experience and adaptation to a child's terminal illness, fifty-four parents (twenty-seven married couples) were administered a structured interview and two objective instruments: the Grief Experience Inventory (Sanders et al. 1978) and the Parental Experience Assessment Form (Rando 1979) from two months to three years following the death of their · child from cancer. The parental grief experience was analyzed with respect to the variables of: support received during the illness, the influence of previous loss, the length of the child's illness, the length of time since the death, the sex of the parent, the …

The Development Of Imagination: The Relationship Between College Students’ Retrospective Reports Of Parent-Child Interactions And Imaginal Activity In Everyday Life, Martin W. Ham Jan 1979

The Development Of Imagination: The Relationship Between College Students’ Retrospective Reports Of Parent-Child Interactions And Imaginal Activity In Everyday Life, Martin W. Ham

Open Access Dissertations

The objectives were two-fold: 1) to determine the extent to which current models of parent-child interactions and imaginal activity are an artifact of the level of data analyzed, and 2) to determine to what extent and in what manner interactions with both parents are related to the imaginal activity of young adults. It was anticipated that the study would help illuminate the antecedent conditions that are associated with various patterns of imagining.

The subjects were 229 college students who participated in two group testing sessions. In the first session, subjects completed the 344-item Imaginal Processes Inventory developed by Singer and …

Some Factors Affecting College Students' Willingness To Interact With Hospitalized Mental Patients, Joan E. Wilkins Jan 1979

Some Factors Affecting College Students' Willingness To Interact With Hospitalized Mental Patients, Joan E. Wilkins

Open Access Dissertations

Since the Mental Health Service Acts of 1963 and 1965, increasing numbers of psychiatric patients have been discharged back into communities for continuing treatment. Many communities have reacted negatively to this influx of ex-patients. Since the nature of the public's reaction affects the establishment of community facilities as well as the course of ex-patients' stays in the community, it is important for mental health professionals to better understand public reaction to mental patients.

Since multiple factors influence behavior, the primary purpose of the present investigation was to simultaneously investigate, through the use of a multivariate design, a variety of subject, …

The Modification Of Impulsive Behavior With Learning Disabled Boys: A Verbal Self-Instructional Approach, Vicki Lynn Moss Jan 1979

The Modification Of Impulsive Behavior With Learning Disabled Boys: A Verbal Self-Instructional Approach, Vicki Lynn Moss

Open Access Dissertations

Seventy-six impulsive, learning disabled boys were tutored individually for five half-hour sessions. Experimental subjects were trained in verbal self-instructional techniques, which taught them how to think aloud and which necessitated good attention to task. Control subjects were tutored in a more traditional manner, with tutors receiving no specif1c instructions. Half of each group worked with academic tasks, while the other half worked with copying, visual-perceptual, and other non-academic tasks. Results indicated that all groups improved significantly from pre- to post-testing on measures of impulsivity (latency and accuracy), classroom behavior and performance, and achievement. None of the Training by Trials, nor …
