Assessment Of Visual Memory In Elementary School Children Under Motivating Conditions, Charles Walter Paskewicz Jan 1975

Assessment Of Visual Memory In Elementary School Children Under Motivating Conditions, Charles Walter Paskewicz

Open Access Dissertations

Visual memory as traditionally defined is a confounded measure, intercorrelated with visual processing abilities of discrimination and copying. In this study visual memory performance was conceptualized to exclude the effects of copying disabilities. The derived measure of visual memory was the difference between a reproduction from memory score and the score obtained on an equivalent copying task. Copying was considered a complex function including discrimination and visual-motor integration. These definitions were necessary to separate out the factors in visual memory assessment and thus provide for a differential diagnosis of visual processing disabilities.

Visual discrimination, copying and reproduction-from-memory measures were hypothesized …

Information Seeking Behavior, Dennis L. Sternlight Jan 1975

Information Seeking Behavior, Dennis L. Sternlight

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has suggested that information seeking behavior is lawful and that the levels of information seeking are dependent upon alterations of the nature and conditions under which the information is sought. However, in the previous research only two variables were manipulated. One was the similarity of the information to the subject seeking the information. This variable proved significant and could. Be used to predict the relative levels of information seeking. The other variable was the race, black or white, of the individual for whom one was seeking information. This variable proved to be not significant.

The current study is …

The Relationship Of Black Ethnicity To Field Dependence And Adjustment, Theodore Conway Schmults Jan 1975

The Relationship Of Black Ethnicity To Field Dependence And Adjustment, Theodore Conway Schmults

Open Access Dissertations

Witkin and his associates have done extensive work on the relation of various perceptual tasks to broader personality dimensions. An avenue opened by this research which was of particular significance to this paper concerns the relationship between field dependence-independence and the individual's sense of separate identity. The more articulated the cognitive style, the more there is a manifestation of a sense of separate identity which includes such things as an awareness of needs and feeling which the person recognizes as his own and as distinct from others. By contrast a global cognitive style which implies a diminished or lesser sense …

Mechanism And Characteristics Of Drug-Induced Aggression, Gerald Gianutsos Jan 1975

Mechanism And Characteristics Of Drug-Induced Aggression, Gerald Gianutsos

Open Access Dissertations

This research investigated the pharmacological alteration of drug-induced aggression in naive, morphine-dependent and chronically haloperidol treated rats. Naive rats were treated with apomorphine (1.25 - 20 mg/Kg) and aggregated in groups of four for aggression. It was determined that 20 mg/Kg of apomorphine produced maximal aggression, as measured by number of attacks, duration of aggressive posturing and number of vocalizations. Doses less than 5 mg/Kg were without any effect. The neuroleptics, haloperidol and oxyperomide, the narcotic, morphine, and the cholinergic agonist, pilocarpine all reduced apomorphine-induced aggression in a dose dependent manner. Centrally acting anti-cholinergic drugs partially reversed the blockade of …

Sex-Role Development In Psychiatrically Disturbed Adolescent Females And Their Parents, Judye Gershman Hess Jan 1975

Sex-Role Development In Psychiatrically Disturbed Adolescent Females And Their Parents, Judye Gershman Hess

Open Access Dissertations

Seventeen acting-out, 17 mixed-neurotic and 19 normal adolescent females were compared with respect to their sex-role development. It was hypothesized that mixed-neurotic girls would be more 'traditionally' feminine in their sex-role development while the acting-out girls would be more masculine. It was expected that the normals would show a combination of masculine and feminine traits. Adolescents' perceptions of the sex-role behavior of their parents were also examined. It was expected that the mixed-neurotic girls would perceive their mothers as more traditional in sex-role while the acting-out girls would perceive their mothers as more masculine. Again, normal girls were expected to …

Operant Analysis Of Behavior Associated With Oral Self-Administration Of Drug Solutions In Rats, Joseph David Zabik Jan 1974

Operant Analysis Of Behavior Associated With Oral Self-Administration Of Drug Solutions In Rats, Joseph David Zabik

Open Access Dissertations

Since many drugs which are abused by man are taken orally, it was desirable to develop a method suitable to quantitatively and reliably measure oral self-administration of drugs and their effects on behavior in experimental animals.

Water deprived rats were trained to lick for drug solutions (4.34 ul/lick) and bar press for food on a Fixed Interval (FI) 60 second schedule and press another bar for secondary reinforcements on a Fixed Ratio (FR)-5 schedule as three concurrent operants. Non-discriminated responding was inconsequential. An appropriate drug solution was substituted for water or the drugs were injected intraperitoneally before the session. For …

The Effect Of The Conditioned Orienting Response On Learning A Two-Choice Discrimination Task By Mentally Retarded Individuals, Edmond S. Zuromski Jan 1974

The Effect Of The Conditioned Orienting Response On Learning A Two-Choice Discrimination Task By Mentally Retarded Individuals, Edmond S. Zuromski

Open Access Dissertations

The present study attempted to demonstrate that conditioning the skin resistance response in institutionalized retardates would facilitate their learning of a two-choice discrimination task.

Half of the subjects were instrumentally reinforced for the skin resistance response to a white noise stimulus prior to learning a discrimination problem; half were not reinforced in the presence of the white noise stimulus, which subsequently preceded the onset of the discrimination problem.

The findings of the present study were: (1) that no SRR conditioning effect was measured with the parameters and reinforcement used; (2) it was not possible to discern a transfer effect of …

Symptom And Dynamic Hierarchies In The Systematic Desensitization Of Test Anxiety: An Incentive Approach, William A. Hancur Jan 1974

Symptom And Dynamic Hierarchies In The Systematic Desensitization Of Test Anxiety: An Incentive Approach, William A. Hancur

Open Access Dissertations

This study proposed to determine the effectiveness of systematic desensitization with integrative, symptom and dynamic hierarchies. It was hypothesized that systematic desensitization with integrative hierarchies would be more effective in reducing disruptive test anxiety than systematic desensitization with either symptom or dynamic hierarchies alone. It was further hypothesized that systematic desensitization with both integrative and dynamic hierarchies would be superior to systematic desensitization with symptom hierarchies in generalization to anxieties associated with test anxiety.

Forty-four test anxious college males were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups: 1) a symptom group treated with systematic desensitization based on cues related …

The Effect Of Extinction On The Delayed Learning Of A Conditioned Taste Aversion In The Rat, John J. Colby Jan 1974

The Effect Of Extinction On The Delayed Learning Of A Conditioned Taste Aversion In The Rat, John J. Colby

Open Access Dissertations

This investigation entailed the first systematic analysis of the extinction of a conditioned taste aversion. The study was undertaken because little is known about the elimination of these prepared responses.

Prepared appear the be characterized by (1) the formation of associations between specific stimuli; (2) the rapidity with which associations are established and (4) the apparent lack of stimulus contiguity generally considered to be necessary to establish classical conditioning.

Throughout the paper an attempt has been made to contrast the acquisition and extinction phases of the conditioned taste aversion, the prepared response, with the body of evidence that has been …

High Risk Pro-Social Behavior: Who Will Respond Heroically In An Emergency, Ira Silverman Jan 1974

High Risk Pro-Social Behavior: Who Will Respond Heroically In An Emergency, Ira Silverman

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how males and females who were categorized as prone to high or low risk behavior in pro-social situations would react when alone or in the presence of another to a simulated emergency where intervention to aid the victim appeared to entail considerable risk.

A group of subjects (Ss) took a pro-social Risk Taking Situations Scale (RTS), constructed for this experiment, that required indicating, that type of pro-social response the S believed he/she would make to another individual in distress. On the basis of the S's response to this set of risk-taking situations, …

Durability Of Secondary Reinforcement As A Function Of Manipulations In The Training And Testing Situations, Lee E. Doerries Jan 1974

Durability Of Secondary Reinforcement As A Function Of Manipulations In The Training And Testing Situations, Lee E. Doerries

Open Access Dissertations

Two experiments studied durability of secondary reinforcement as a function of manipulations in the training (Experiment I), and training and testing situations (Experiment II). In Experiment I, a total of 40 rats were trained on a single or four different tasks over four consecutive days. Rats received 120 pairings of white noise and food in either a simultaneous or backward conditioning procedure. Testing occurred on a new learning task (lever box) one wee following was consequated with white noise, the other having no consequence, were present during testing. The results showed that the simultaneous conditioning procedure was an efficient method …

Residual Fear Of The Cs As A Function Of Response Prevention After Avoidance Or Classical-Defensive Conditioning In The Rat, Peter M. Monti Jan 1974

Residual Fear Of The Cs As A Function Of Response Prevention After Avoidance Or Classical-Defensive Conditioning In The Rat, Peter M. Monti

Open Access Dissertations

The problems of assessing fear reduction after response prevention techniques were reviewed. After surveying the literature it was apparent that whether or not response prevention actually reduced a subject's fear to the CS was still an unanswered question. The present investigation attempted to measure fear to the CS after response prevention by employing a conditioned emotional response paradigm. The first major hypothesis was that fear of an auditory CS (conditioned in an avoidance paradigm) is reduced during response prevention. Another hypothesis considered the possibility that conditioning may occur to aspects of the conditioning environment seas well as to the specific …

Sex-Role Development In Psychiatrically Disturbed Adolescent Males And Their Parents, Arnold Charles Small Jan 1974

Sex-Role Development In Psychiatrically Disturbed Adolescent Males And Their Parents, Arnold Charles Small

Open Access Dissertations

Seventeen antisocial, 17 mixed psychiatric, and 17 normal adolescents were compared in regard to their sex-role development. It was hypothesized that antisocial adolescents would display a more feminine unconscious sex-role identity and more conscious masculinity than normal adolescents, with the mixed group intermediate between the two. Also, their perceptions of the sex-role behavior of their parents were examined. It was expected that the disturbed groups would perceive greater sex-role inappropriateness in their parents. Lastly, they were compared for the possession of certain personality traits traditionally classified as masculine or feminine.

The fathers and mothers of the adolescents were also compared …

Performance Of Hyperkinetic And Normal Children Under Two Conditions Of Reinforcement, Howard Israel Benesch Jan 1974

Performance Of Hyperkinetic And Normal Children Under Two Conditions Of Reinforcement, Howard Israel Benesch

Open Access Dissertations

Si x teen hyper-kinetics on medication (H:D), 18 on no medication (H:D), and 20 normal control Ss (NC) (N=54) were randomly distributed between verbal and material reward groups in a 2 X 3 factorial design.

One purpose of this study was to examine one aspect of Wender’s (1971) hypothesis that hyperkinetics as a group are less responsive to positive reinforcement than normal controls and that as a group, hyperkinetics on drugs should be more sensitive to reward than those off drugs, This study demonstrated that group H:D learned the task, “Golf-Ball-in-the-Hole" more efficiently than group H:ND, i.e., their …

Acute Grief In Adulthood: Toward A Cognitive Model Of Normal And Pathological Mourning, Allen G. Schor Jan 1974

Acute Grief In Adulthood: Toward A Cognitive Model Of Normal And Pathological Mourning, Allen G. Schor

Open Access Dissertations

The 'cognitive model' in this treatise is proposed as an original method of understanding, describing and explaining the acute grief process and outcome. The model suggests that the primary impact of a sudden death event is upon the survivor's conceptual frame-of-reference. This differs from the traditional psychoanalytic view of mourning which emphasizes the emotional impact as being foremost.

Man's typical functioning is assumed to be dependent on the cognitive dimensions or categories by which he comprehends those events which he encounters. These dimensions are postulated as forming a cognitive structural matrix, in which dimensions relating to significant others are central …
