The Effects Of Delayed Response Prevention On Fear Reduction And Enhancement, Stephen Abbot Neill
The Effects Of Delayed Response Prevention On Fear Reduction And Enhancement, Stephen Abbot Neill
Open Access Dissertations
Long durations of response prevention have been shown to reduce fear in laboratory settings while short durations have been shown to enhance fear. While a review of the literature revealed a number of different parameters which affect the ability of response prevention to reduce or enhance fear, the ability of delayed presentations of the treatment to reduce fear had not been demonstrated. This study examined the effects of delayed presentations of extended response prevention on fear reduction and of short durations of RP on fear enhancement.

Nicotine Self-Regultion In Heavy And Light Smokers, Gwendolyn A. Underhill
Nicotine Self-Regultion In Heavy And Light Smokers, Gwendolyn A. Underhill
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to provide a further test of the nicotine addiction theory. It was designed to determine the extent to which smokers regulate plasma nicotine levels and smoking behavior in response to varying nicotine yields. More specifically, it was designed to assess differences between heavy and light smokers in nicotine regulation. Age differences were also explored. The effects of varying nicotine yield (high and low nicotine dose) was measured in 19 male smokers (10 heavy smokers and 9 light smokers) on the following dependent variables: smoking behavior (puff frequency, intensity, duration and volume), ANS physiological …
The Integrated Relationships Of Protriptyline, Thyroid Status And Noradrenergic Mechanisms In Rat Brain, Edward A. Kaiser
The Integrated Relationships Of Protriptyline, Thyroid Status And Noradrenergic Mechanisms In Rat Brain, Edward A. Kaiser
Open Access Dissertations
Reasons for the observed lag-time for clinical efficacy of the tricyclic antidepressant drug, protriptyline, have been investigated. Our results demonstrate that chronic protriptyline administration results in several compensatory neural mechanisms: (1) changes in endogeneous cytoplasmic norepinephrine levels, (2) changes in norepinephrine turnover rate/recovery rate following the last dose in a chronic series of test drug administrations and (3) adaptations of the pre-synaptic receptor. The time course for these adaptive changes parallel the time required for the onset of their clinical effectiveness.
We propose that acutely the action of the tricyclics on norepinephrine re-uptake is largely negated by compensatory adjustments in …

Investigation And Interpretation Of An Event With Multiple Causes, Stephen A. Ginpil
Investigation And Interpretation Of An Event With Multiple Causes, Stephen A. Ginpil
Open Access Dissertations
Previous research suggested that subjects tend to investigate a potentially multiply caused event by initially exploring the most likely cause. Such search was said to be "truncated" in that it did not go on to explore additonal causes if the involvement of the initially hypothesized cause was demonstrated. It was suggested that this search strategy led to subjects' encountering a narrow range of information which would not allow them to adequately understand such an event.
The present study allowed subjects to investigate three hypothesized causes of an event by sequentially selecting three separate pieces of information. Subjects could choose to …
The Interaction Of Participant Conceptual Level And Structure Of Groups Teaching Interpersonal Communication, Valerie L. Brewer
The Interaction Of Participant Conceptual Level And Structure Of Groups Teaching Interpersonal Communication, Valerie L. Brewer
Open Access Dissertations
The interaction of participant conceptual level and structure of groups teaching interpersonal communication was investigated. Additionally, a checklist measure attempting to operationalize positive, negative, and neutral aspects of communication skill was developed and applied to both a written response measure and Goodman's GAIT exercise. Sixty-six male and female college students enrolled in a personal development course were randomly assigned within blocks of high and low conceptual level (CL) to one of three experimental conditions: structured group, unstructured group, or control group interventions. Dependent variables of communication skill and satisfaction were examined. Little support was found for Hunt's matching-model interactional predictions. …

The Relationship Between Ethnicity And Self-Concept In Italian-Americans, Paul Robert Cassarino
The Relationship Between Ethnicity And Self-Concept In Italian-Americans, Paul Robert Cassarino
Open Access Dissertations
It is the purpose of this research to investigate the relationship of ethnicity and self-concept. Relationship here means that self-concept varies with ethnicity even when other variables, such as social class, age, etc. are similar.
In the literature review, the argument is developed that perceptions of self are in part formulated from the perception of oneself as being ethnic or having a particular ethnic heritage. These ethnic perceptions include belief systems, patterns of emotions, expectations, perceptions of the environment, sense of reality, interpretive schemes for interacting in the world, etc. In the development of self-perception or self-concept, these perceptions that …
Children’S Fears: The Development Of A New Measure And Preliminary Findings Regarding Age And Sex Differences, Michael Hayden Davies
Children’S Fears: The Development Of A New Measure And Preliminary Findings Regarding Age And Sex Differences, Michael Hayden Davies
Open Access Dissertations
This study reviews prior descriptive and self-report surveys of children's fears and presents the initial development of a new measure, the Fear Expression and Research Survey (F.E.A.R.S.). The F.E.A.R.S. represents an encouraging improvement over past measures: four clearly identifiable components emerged following the two administrations; the factor structure and degree of factorial invariance were satisfactory; the percentage of total variance accounted for by the 24-item core was 59% on Round One and 58% on Round Two; and the internal consistency (Alpha) coefficients were within acceptable limits. Evidence is presented to suggest that children's fears change with age on at least …

The Relationship Of Social Problem Soliving To High School Preformance, Barry Alan Plummer
The Relationship Of Social Problem Soliving To High School Preformance, Barry Alan Plummer
Open Access Dissertations
This research project is undertaken to explore the relationship between social problem solving and the academic and social performance of high school youth. Psychologists have stated that social problem solving is an important component of psychosocial competence. Similarly, both theory and research have linked social problem solving to overt behavioral adjustment to school in populations of young children. In this study, the broader notion that academic and social performance in high school will be strongly related to social problem solving was tested.

The Child's Adjustment And Development Following The Death Of A Parent: A Critical Analysis Of The Research And Its Implications, Ellen B. Berlinsky
The Child's Adjustment And Development Following The Death Of A Parent: A Critical Analysis Of The Research And Its Implications, Ellen B. Berlinsky
Open Access Dissertations
A model for evaluating studies was developed, based on standards for methodological adequacy of empirical investigations and critiques of reviewers of the parental bereavement literature, in order to determine whether or not there are immediate or long term differences between individuals who experience the death of a parent during childhood and those who do not ~ The assessment model which included a five point scale for rating studies, was applied to research conducted primarily from 1960-1980. Much of the research was found to be methodologically flawed, with fewer than half the studies judged to be minimally acceptable. The methodologically adequate …
National Stereotypes And Their Relationship To Self-Perceptions In Irish, Italian, And American College Students, Caroline M. Salvatore
National Stereotypes And Their Relationship To Self-Perceptions In Irish, Italian, And American College Students, Caroline M. Salvatore
Open Access Dissertations
This study examined self-perceptions, and, their relationship to heterostereotypes and auto stereotypes in three groups: Irish students from the University Colleges of Dublin, Galway, and St. Patrick's College in Dublin; Italian students from the - University of Palermo in Sicily; and American students at the Community College of Rhode Island, Bryant College, and the University of Rhode Island.
It was predicted that, as a reflection of greater cultural homogeneity, a higher degree of within-group similarity would be found in the self-perceptions of both Italian and Irish students than in the self-perceptions of American students. It was further predicted that differences …
