Statistical Power Of Psychological Research: The Artifactual Basis Of Controversial Results, Joseph S. Rossi Jan 1984

Statistical Power Of Psychological Research: The Artifactual Basis Of Controversial Results, Joseph S. Rossi

Open Access Dissertations

The statistical power of psychological research was examined in three studies. The purpose of Study I was to provide a general assessment of statistical power in psychological research. All of the studies using statistical tests in the 1982 issues of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (N = 142) were evaluated and compared to the results of a previous survey. Results indicated that the power of psychological research has increased over the past 20 years but that power must still be characterized as low. These results are limited because accurate estimates of effect …

Factors Predicting Pattern Of Math Courses And Mathematical Aptitude Test Scores Among High School Women And Men, Mary A. Kanarian

Open Access Dissertations

The present investigation was designed to extend the research on cognitive and social factors predicting both pattern of enrollment in mathematics courses across the high school years and twelfth grade mathematical aptitude test scores among women and men. A total of 226 seniors enrolled in a high school located in an upper-class neighborhood in New England volunteered to participate and completed a booklet containing: a student consent form, the Attitudes toward Mathematics Scales (Fennema & Sherman, 1976), the Agency and Communion Competency Scale (White, 1979), and a background questionnaire. A member of the school staff obtained eighth grade Space Relations …

The Effects Of Story Consequence And Story Theme On The Moral Reasoning Of Seventh, Ninth And Eleventh Graders, Kevin Plummer Jan 1983

The Effects Of Story Consequence And Story Theme On The Moral Reasoning Of Seventh, Ninth And Eleventh Graders, Kevin Plummer

Open Access Dissertations

Various stage models have been proposed as a means of organizing and understanding the construct of moral reasoning. Kohlberg’s (1976) simple stage model is the most rigid application of structuralism as he suggests that moral reasoning is based almost exclusively on the structural capacities of the reasoner. Significant criticism has been levied against this model as it has not fared well under scientific scrutiny. Rest (1979) has extended Kohlberg’s paradigm in his design of a complex stage model. Rest (1979) suggests that situational factors play a major role in reasoning about moral problems. This results in complex stage patterns as …

A Comparison Of Five Rules For Determining The Number Of Components In Complex Patterns, William R. Zwick Jan 1983

A Comparison Of Five Rules For Determining The Number Of Components In Complex Patterns, William R. Zwick

Open Access Dissertations

The performance of five methods for determining the number of components to retain (Horn's parallel analysis, Velicer is MAP, Cattell is SCREE, Bartlett's test and Kaiser's eigenvalue greater than unity) was investigated across seven systematically varied factors (sample size, number of variables, number of components, component saturation, equal or unequal numbers of variables per component, and the presence or absence of unique and complex variables). Five sample correlation matrices were generated at each of two levels of sample size from the 48 known population correlation matrices representing six levels of component pattern complexity. The performance of the parallel analysis and …

Relationships Of Visible Nonverbal Behaviors And Characteristics Of Teachers To High School Students' First Impressions Of Teachers' Abilities In Classroom Control, Mary Cecil Weyhing Jan 1983

Relationships Of Visible Nonverbal Behaviors And Characteristics Of Teachers To High School Students' First Impressions Of Teachers' Abilities In Classroom Control, Mary Cecil Weyhing

Open Access Dissertations

The relationships of visible nonverbal behaviors and characteristics of teachers to high school students' immediate impressions of teachers' abilities at classroom control were examined through two studies. The first was a correlational study: 44 college students were videotaped simulating teachers entering a classroom and beginning ,an initial class meeting. Students from a large comprehensive high school serving a middle-class and working-class town in New 'England rated the videotaped teachers. Three groups of seven students each rated approximately one-third of the teachers on ability to control a classroom; four groups of six students each rated teachers on attractiveness; three groups of …

The Role-Taking Construct And Its Relationship To Social Acceptance, William P. Geary Jan 1983

The Role-Taking Construct And Its Relationship To Social Acceptance, William P. Geary

Open Access Dissertations

This research was undertaken to examine the role-taking construct as being a composite of two different component abilities, interrelating multiple elements and controlling the self. Each of these abilities was examined developmentally, and in relationship to social acceptance, intelligence and socioeconomic status. Developmental psychologists have stated that role-taking is an important social-cognitive ability for appropriate social behavior and peer acceptance. In a similar manner, research has linked a delay in role-taking ability to peer acceptance problems in certain populations. In this study, the multidimensionality of role-taking and its relationship to social acceptance in normal elementary school population is examined.

A Social Cognitive Analysis Of Stereotyping, Cathryn M. Noseworthy Jan 1982

A Social Cognitive Analysis Of Stereotyping, Cathryn M. Noseworthy

Open Access Dissertations

The present investigation applied a social cognitive approach to stereotypes. The emphasis of this approach on the limitations of the information processor, focuses on the mechanisms people employ to cope with vast amounts of information input and the biases inherent in such mechanisms. One of the most pervasive of the se mechanisms, categorization, is also an essential element to stereotyping. Consequently, this approach leads to a view of stereotypes as categorization schemas with attributes such as race or sex tagged to category labels. This position was explored using the female sex-role stereotype as an exemplar. The structure and content of …
