An Investigation Of The Effect Of Holocaust Survivor Parents On Their Children, Cynthia Budick
An Investigation Of The Effect Of Holocaust Survivor Parents On Their Children, Cynthia Budick
Open Access Dissertations
Studies of the Holocaust have shown that the Concentration Camp victims were traumatized in so massive a fashion as to make a permanent and irreversible change in their character.
The purpose of the present research was to make a direct inquiry into whether the character traits and symptoms of the survivors had an effect on character structure and personality of their children. Further, it was an attempt to distinguish two groups of survivors' children: children of survivors who were adolescents in the Concentration Camps and children of survivors who were adults in the Concentration Camps.
The subjects in this study …

Conditioned Reinforcement: Order Out Of Chaos, Robert Stephen Harris
Conditioned Reinforcement: Order Out Of Chaos, Robert Stephen Harris
Open Access Dissertations
The empirical research on conditioned reinforcement, after nearly half a century, has failed to yield a coherent and conclusive body of literature to justify its extensive use as a genuine phenomenon and a basic construct within the field of learning. The primary reason for this dilemma is a history of the use of inadequate controls and the use of paradigms which are subject to interpretations other than that of conditioned reinforcement. In order to determine conclusively, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the establishment of a conditioned reinforcement effect, intracranial stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus was used as the primary …

The Role Of The Orientation Response In The Cognitive Control Of Leveling And Sharpening, David J. Libon
The Role Of The Orientation Response In The Cognitive Control Of Leveling And Sharpening, David J. Libon
Open Access Dissertations
Heart rate orientation responses were taken while subjects were administered two tests of leveling and sharpening. The first leveling and sharpening test was neutral in content while the second was designed to be affectively arousing. Subjects were also administered the aggression scale from the Edwards Personal Preference Scale (EPPS) and classified into low and high aggression groups. It was predicted that the use of attention is a major cognitive distinction between levelers and sharpeners. Heart rate orientation responses were used as a measure of attention. It was predicted that sharpeners would exhibit greater orienting behavior than levelers and these attentional …
The Relationship Of Linguistic Awareness To Reading Skill In Children And Adults, Anne Csroline Pratt
The Relationship Of Linguistic Awareness To Reading Skill In Children And Adults, Anne Csroline Pratt
Open Access Dissertations
Extensive experimental evidence suggests that reading disability is related to linguistic deficits. One linguistic skill, linguistic awareness (awareness of the units that comprise one's language), has been shown to be related to beginning reading skills in young children, but little research has been conducted with older children or adults.
In Experiment 1 of the present study, third-grade good and poor readers were compared on three measures of linguistic awareness and a non-speech control task. Significant differences were found on all three linguistic awareness measures, but not on the non-speech control task. When the sample was divided by verbal and non-verbal …

Some Factors Related To Self-Esteem In Women, Robin H. Hasenfeld
Open Access Dissertations
Previous research has suggested a high positive correlation between agentic characteristics and self-esteem. Psychotherapists have noted, however, that as women clients become more agentic, they experience distress and heightened concerns about betraying their mothers. The present study utilized a non-clinical sample of adult women engaged in the process of personal change (i.e., women reentering college) to explore relationships among the variables of Self-esteem (SE), Fear-of-success (FOS), Educational Goals (EG), Agency (A), Communion (C), agentic similarity to mother (ASI), and comfort with agentic attributes (ACI). In addition, More Advanced and Less Advanced students were compared on these variables. One hundred and …

Creativity, Attention Deployment, And Equilibration, Joseph R. Mcallister Jr.
Creativity, Attention Deployment, And Equilibration, Joseph R. Mcallister Jr.
Open Access Dissertations
This investigation examines the relevance of Piagetian theory for understanding creativity. Selected studies of creativity using a variety of methodologies and deriving from diverse theoretical orientations are reviewed with the purpose of demonstrating a common link among seemingly unrelated investigations, namely, their congruence with a Piagetian theory of creativity.
Three subtopic areas are considered in more detail: attention deployment of creatives, similarities and differences between creatives and schizophrenics, and Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions. An attempt is made to relate the findings from each of these areas to a Piagetian perspective on creativity.
Subjects were 104 undergraduate student. A tachistoscopic-type …
Causal Inferences Among Perceived Work And Nonwork Stress And Satisfaction, And Psychological Distress: Empirical Tests Of Path-Analytic Models, Jocelyn J. Johnson
Causal Inferences Among Perceived Work And Nonwork Stress And Satisfaction, And Psychological Distress: Empirical Tests Of Path-Analytic Models, Jocelyn J. Johnson
Open Access Dissertations
The present investigation was designed to integrate work and nonwork domains in the study of perceived stress, satisfaction, and psychological distress. Causal inferences among perceived work and nonwork stress and satisfaction, and psychological distress were determined by empirically testing two basic path-analytic models depicting causal relationships among those variables.
Data were obtained from a sample of 105 female clerical workers on five variables (work stress, nonwork stress, work satisfaction, nonwork satisfaction, and psychological distress) and support for the contention that work and nonwork domains are interdependent was found. Nonwork variables contributed more to perceived psychological distress than work factors.

Short Stature In Caucasian Males: Personality Correlates And Social Attribution, Leslie F. Martel
Short Stature In Caucasian Males: Personality Correlates And Social Attribution, Leslie F. Martel
Open Access Dissertations
Given the advent of genetically engineered human growth hormone, there is a pressing need to better understand the personality correlates and impact of short stature in males. One hundred-twenty college age Caucasian males of short, average and tall stature were administered measures of self-concept, body-cathexis, psychological security, and a semantic-differential measure. In addition, a questionnaire regarding the importance of height in daily life was also included.
The broadly-based literature review strongly suggests that short stature in males is a distinct developmental and social liability.
The results of the present study supported the first prediction that short subjects would feel significantly …

Relationships Among Stages Of Change, Types Of Psychopathology, And Psychotherapy Outcome, Eileen A. Mcconnaughy
Relationships Among Stages Of Change, Types Of Psychopathology, And Psychotherapy Outcome, Eileen A. Mcconnaughy
Open Access Dissertations
A client's stage of change at the beginning of therapy seems to be an important selection criterion to consider in relation to treatment outcome. A rational scale was developed in an earlier study to operationally define the theoretical stages of change. The present study attempted to cross-validate the scale on a new clinical sample (N = 327). The principal component, internal consistency, and cluster profile analyses demonstrated a replication of the original findings. The stages (Pre-Contemplation, Contemplation, Action, and Maintenance) were examined in relation to therapist ratings of treatment outcome, As predicted, Pre-Contemplators showed significantly less progress than subjects …
The Development And Validation Of The Student Personality Assessment Form, Earl H. Baker
The Development And Validation Of The Student Personality Assessment Form, Earl H. Baker
Open Access Dissertations
Recently, psychologists have become increasingly concerned with personality of preschool age and lower grade school age children. The most efficient method of measuring personality for this age child is through the use of ratings by others who are familiar with the child. The current project consists of four studies which describe the development and validation of an instrument designed to measure personality in children of kindergarten, first or second grade age. The first study describes the development of the Student Personality Assessment Form (SPAF) which was designed to measure seven traits identified in research with children or adults. Principal component …

The Impact Of Personality And Systems Variables On Smoking Cessation And Recidivism: An Extension Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change, Duane Valentine Lapsanski
Open Access Dissertations
To determine empirically whether the comprehensiveness of the transtheoretical model of change (Prochaska, 1979) would benefit by the inclusion of personality and systems variables, 266 volunteers who had either quit smoking cigarettes in the recent past or were considering quitting in the near future completed the Activity Vector Analysis (AVA) and the Life Experiences Survey (LES), along with a Demographic and Smoking History Questionnaire. One-hundred-forty-one volunteers were self-changers, while 87 were attempting to change with the help of therapy. Six months later, subjects were asked to complete the first two instruments again, along with a Follow-up Questionnaire.
