Rehabilitation And Psychological Evaluations Of Claimants Of Portuguese And Puerto Rican Background, Rui R. Rodrigues Jan 1986

Rehabilitation And Psychological Evaluations Of Claimants Of Portuguese And Puerto Rican Background, Rui R. Rodrigues

Open Access Dissertations

This study outlines specific steps for guiding bilingual psychologists in the administration of psychological testing instruments. The study delineates the discrimination of subtle behavioral responses, the identification of various forms of low motivation, evasiveness, and malingering during the assessment procedure.

One hundred disability immigrant claimants of Portuguese and Puerto Rican background took part in this study. Data on file from their psychological reports was analyzed and two hypotheses were tested. The findings indicate that there is a strong relationship between the subjects' cognitive functioning, their adaptive behavior, and academic achievement in their native countries. There was also a significant relationship …

The Relative Contribution Of Social/Cognitive Processes To Social Competence, Diane Marques Jan 1986

The Relative Contribution Of Social/Cognitive Processes To Social Competence, Diane Marques

Open Access Dissertations

In the present study, the relationship of linguistic achievement, social problem-solving and empathy to social competence as validated by teachers, peers and self was explored. It was hypothesized that these three developmental processes would be significant predictors of social competence, and that their relative orders of contribution would differ across competence indicators. The subjects in this study were 102 third grade students. After parental consents were obtained, five pencil and paper measures were administered to the students using a group testing format in two sessions. These measures examined language achievement, social problem-solving, empathy, a peer rating of other classmates and …

The Relationship Of Linguistic Awareness To Reading Skill In Children And Adults, Anne Csroline Pratt Jan 1985

The Relationship Of Linguistic Awareness To Reading Skill In Children And Adults, Anne Csroline Pratt

Open Access Dissertations

Extensive experimental evidence suggests that reading disability is related to linguistic deficits. One linguistic skill, linguistic awareness (awareness of the units that comprise one's language), has been shown to be related to beginning reading skills in young children, but little research has been conducted with older children or adults.

In Experiment 1 of the present study, third-grade good and poor readers were compared on three measures of linguistic awareness and a non-speech control task. Significant differences were found on all three linguistic awareness measures, but not on the non-speech control task. When the sample was divided by verbal and non-verbal …

Style In Children's Literature: A Comparison Of Passages From Books For Adults And For Children, Celia Catlett Anderson Jan 1984

Style In Children's Literature: A Comparison Of Passages From Books For Adults And For Children, Celia Catlett Anderson

Open Access Dissertations

In this study I tested the standard assumptions about differences in language usage in adult and children's literature by analyzing parallel passages from the works of four authors, Nathaniel Hawthorne, George MacDonald, Oscar Wilde, and John Gardner, who each wrote prose fantasy for both audiences.

A computer program and syntactic code based on those used by York University in Toronto provided a statistical analysis of the 20,000 words of selected text. I found that the passages from the children's books had much shorter paragraphs, and slightly shorter sentences, T-units, clauses, and words. T-units were the most consistently and notably reduced …

National Stereotypes And Their Relationship To Self-Perceptions In Irish, Italian, And American College Students, Caroline M. Salvatore Jan 1981

National Stereotypes And Their Relationship To Self-Perceptions In Irish, Italian, And American College Students, Caroline M. Salvatore

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined self-perceptions, and, their relationship to heterostereotypes and auto stereotypes in three groups: Irish students from the University Colleges of Dublin, Galway, and St. Patrick's College in Dublin; Italian students from the - University of Palermo in Sicily; and American students at the Community College of Rhode Island, Bryant College, and the University of Rhode Island.

It was predicted that, as a reflection of greater cultural homogeneity, a higher degree of within-group similarity would be found in the self-perceptions of both Italian and Irish students than in the self-perceptions of American students. It was further predicted that differences …

Assessment Of Visual Memory In Elementary School Children Under Motivating Conditions, Charles Walter Paskewicz Jan 1975

Assessment Of Visual Memory In Elementary School Children Under Motivating Conditions, Charles Walter Paskewicz

Open Access Dissertations

Visual memory as traditionally defined is a confounded measure, intercorrelated with visual processing abilities of discrimination and copying. In this study visual memory performance was conceptualized to exclude the effects of copying disabilities. The derived measure of visual memory was the difference between a reproduction from memory score and the score obtained on an equivalent copying task. Copying was considered a complex function including discrimination and visual-motor integration. These definitions were necessary to separate out the factors in visual memory assessment and thus provide for a differential diagnosis of visual processing disabilities.

Visual discrimination, copying and reproduction-from-memory measures were hypothesized …
