Our Beloved Lizzie; Constructing An American Legend, Gabriela Schalow Adler Jan 1995

Our Beloved Lizzie; Constructing An American Legend, Gabriela Schalow Adler

Open Access Dissertations

Lizzie Borden is a legendary figure in American culture who, unlike some others, has not received much scholarly attention. Yet her story has generated a great number and variety of texts, and several performance pieces as well. New texts continue to be published. This body of work begs to be examined, so that insights may be gained into the interactions of popular literacies and narrative forms. The study of different textual treatments of the same subject allows us to trace issues of gender, class, family, the construction of subjectivity and the intersections of genre, narrative and history.

The theoretical approach …

Quantitative Eeg Effects Due To Task Related Processing Of Lateralized Auditory Continuous Performance Tests, Separate From Attentional And Motor Components Of The Tasks, Sherri M. Gold

Open Access Dissertations

Quantitative EEG data were obtained for 22 male college students during a Resting condition and during performance of three continuous performance tests (CPT) that differed in the demands on linguistic processing. Previous EEG studies from our laboratory have indicated a relationship between left hemisphere beta power and performance of an auditory CPT that requires processing of phonetic stimuli. The participant listens to a series of letters and responds by pressing a button whenever the same letter is repeated twice in a row. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that left hemisphere EEG beta may reflect processing of language …

Sexual Assertiveness Training For College Women: An Intervention Study, Pamela Deiter

Open Access Dissertations

Thirty participants in a four-week Sexual Assertiveness training workshop series were compared to 30 participants in a placebo control condition for general assertiveness, and to 30 participants in a no-intervention control condition. All 90 participants were undergraduate women from a northeastern university. Dependent measures included three subscales of the Sexual Assertiveness Scale, an AIDS Prevention Self Efficacy measure, the Rathus Assertiveness Inventory, and three measures of self-reported recent sexual behavior. Two new communication-related subscales to the Sexual Assertiveness Scale were piloted. Additional measures of anticipated partner response to sexual assertiveness, and history of victimization were included to learn about their …

Reading Ability, Vocabulary Acquisition, And Phonological Processes: An Investigation Of Vocabulary Acquisition By Skilled And Less-Skilled Readers, Linda Aguiar Jan 1993

Reading Ability, Vocabulary Acquisition, And Phonological Processes: An Investigation Of Vocabulary Acquisition By Skilled And Less-Skilled Readers, Linda Aguiar

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research has found that skilled and less-skilled readers differ in their ability to incorporate aurally encountered words into their personal lexicons. The primary purpose of this study was to corroborate and expand these results. In addition, the present project investigated the associations among reading skill, vocabulary knowledge, and two phonological processes: verbal working memory and lexical access.

Data from 105 fourth-grade students were analyzed for this study. Each student took part in an experimental word learning procedure and completed three memory measures, two lexical access measures, and a test of basic reading skills. Data from subsets of 28 skilled …

Relations Among Verbal Working Memory, Listening Comprehension, And Reading Skills, Joanna S. Futransky

Open Access Dissertations

Previous research suggests that verbal working memory deficits contribute to problems experienced in reading and in listening comprehension. The primary purpose of the present study was to explore the role of verbal working memory in listening comprehension for fifth-grade students. Additionally, the present research investigated the association between working memory and the two components of reading: decoding and comprehension. A third goal of the study was to investigate the power of listening comprehension, decoding ability-memory skills, and IQ to predict reading comprehension.

Data from 136 fifth-grade students with average to above average cognitive ability was analyzed for the study. Each …

Verbal Working Memory And Speech Production Abilities In Children With Differential Reading Skill: A Chronological- And Reading-Age Comparison, Brenda H. Stone Jan 1992

Verbal Working Memory And Speech Production Abilities In Children With Differential Reading Skill: A Chronological- And Reading-Age Comparison, Brenda H. Stone

Open Access Dissertations

The primary goal of this study was to investigate the association between verbal working memory and speech production and to address a number of ongoing questions about the nature of the relationship between these two phonological processes and reading ability. In an effort to clarify these relationships, the following areas were explored. First, previous research has suggested that poor readers generally do not perform as well as their normal-reading peers on phonological processing tasks, but their performance is not consistently worse than younger children reading at the same level. In order to examine this issue, this study compared the performance …

The Development Of Hope And Hopelessness: Structural And Functional Aspects, Anthony Scioli Jan 1990

The Development Of Hope And Hopelessness: Structural And Functional Aspects, Anthony Scioli

Open Access Dissertations

Hopelessness was explored from a developmental perspective. The investigation focused primarily on the relative importance of structural vs. functional variables in determining levels of hopelessness in children and adolescents. The two secondary aims of this study were to further clarify the concept of hopelessness, and to assess the construct validity of the Hopelessness Scale for Children (HSC: Kazdin et al., 1983).

Sixty-four children and adolescents scoring either "high" or "low" on the HSC were interviewed. Thirty-two of the subjects were children, 6-10 years of age. One half of these subjects were clinically involved. The adolescent sample also consisted of thirty-two …
