Parental Comprehension Of The Adolescent Stutterer’S Attitude Toward His Stuttering, Katharine G. Butler Dec 1952

Parental Comprehension Of The Adolescent Stutterer’S Attitude Toward His Stuttering, Katharine G. Butler

Masters Theses

The Problem and Its Background

The Importance of Communication

Speech education and concomitantly, speech re-education, is becoming an increasingly important part of the curriculum of the public schools. Speech is not only a tool; it is "our greatest agent of teaching and learning."1 Therefore, the importance of adequate speech cannot be over-emphasized.

Speech can become an integrating factor in the curricula of both the elementary and secondary schools. Four elements of the curricula currently being stressed are as follows.2

Some Demonstrations For High School Science, Richard F. Welch Aug 1952

Some Demonstrations For High School Science, Richard F. Welch

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The Objectives of the Teaching of Science

The place of science education in the program of the secondary school has long been justified. Hence, recent committees have not dealt with the need for science courses, but, rather, have devoted their efforts toward establishing feasible objectives for the teaching of science, and toward developing curricula and courses of study that would meet these objectives. Among these various committees are two that have exerted great influence in developing feasible objectives for science teaching, and in suggesting curricula and courses of study.

A Study Of A High School Marriage And Family Course, Wendell P. Hill

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The Objectives of Education

It is recognized that the public school is designed to do more than develop academic competence.1 The school must also develop emotional and social maturity in its charges. If the public school fails to take cognizance of the importance of these latter two objectives, it will fail also in meeting some of the more important objectives of education. A recent report of the Educational Policies Commission of the National Education Association supports this viewpoint clearly.

The Effect Of Various Binders And Moisture Content On The Apparent Thermal Conductivity Of Green Foundry Sand, Robert V. Wolf Jan 1952

The Effect Of Various Binders And Moisture Content On The Apparent Thermal Conductivity Of Green Foundry Sand, Robert V. Wolf

Masters Theses

"The broad field of heat transfer is well developed in its theory and mathematics, however, some few applications of varying heat transfer rates have been explored only recently.

Previous to the nineteen-thirties, foundrymen had apparently been interested in heat transfer measurements only from the standpoint of the melting of metals and the heat treatment of the finished castings, with the rate of solidification and the transfer of heat from the casting through the mold being ignored, or at least accepted as an uncontrollable factor. This does not apply, of course, to the use of metal chills to adjust solidification rates …

The Sociometric Technique With A Seventh-Grade Class In Social Studies And English, Cleo Chapekis Jan 1952

The Sociometric Technique With A Seventh-Grade Class In Social Studies And English, Cleo Chapekis

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Man is a social or group animal. With few exceptions all the activities in which he indulges depend on the cooperation, presence, and in many cases the assistance of other men. Thus it can be seen that man is likely to seek the association of others so that his activities may be carried on more effectively.

The social function of man is illustrated in the comment of Cole and Bruce, that follows:1

"From the moment the child is born, and never ceasing thereafter throughout his life, his social environment teaches him …

A Linear Polymer X-Ray Scattering Model, Bernard Cohen Jan 1952

A Linear Polymer X-Ray Scattering Model, Bernard Cohen

Masters Theses

"In the development of X-ray scattering intensity curves physical models are necessary for the theoretical mathematical development involved. The purpose of this paper is the development of a physical model suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis or a linear polymer.

X-ray intensity patterns may be used to give a greater insight as to the atomic structure, configuration or atoms, molecular weight, and therefore a greater knowledge of the structure of matter, both microscopic and macroscopic. The converse may sometimes be used. An atom or molecular model is constructed, from this model X-ray scattering curves may be derived. These curves may be …

The Fluorescence Of Uranium In Solid Solution, Robert Emmett Kelly Jan 1952

The Fluorescence Of Uranium In Solid Solution, Robert Emmett Kelly

Masters Theses

"The fluorescence of uranium finds its greatest application in the so-called "bead test" which is a method of qualitative analysis. In the form of a bead, the uranium is in solid solution, and if the proper chemical solvent is used, the bead will fluoresce under ultraviolet radiation.

In the systematic separation of the metallic elements, uranium is associated with the aluminum group in that it is not precipitated by hydrogen sulfide in 0.3 N H ion but is precipitated by ammonium hydroxide and ammonium sulfide. In the analytical scheme, uranium acts like beryllium. This process of detection is sometimes tedious …

An Efficiency Analysis Of Underground Haulage In The Tri-State Mining District, Leroy King Wheelock Jan 1952

An Efficiency Analysis Of Underground Haulage In The Tri-State Mining District, Leroy King Wheelock

Masters Theses

"Purpose of Investigation: This study was undertaken to describe and analyze the system of haulage as practiced in mines of the Tri-State District by the Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Company.

The investigation is concerned with all of the operations involved in moving the broken rock and is composed of three distinct procedures: loading, hauling, and hoisting.

One of the important items in the cost of mining is the movement of ore and waste to the surface for further disposition. Increased efficiency of transportation should introduce lowered production costs.

In this paper the efficiency of the present equipment and the …

Photoelastic Investigation Of Notched Corners In Square Apertures In Flat Plates Subjected To Tension, Lloyd E. Byrd Jr. Jan 1952

Photoelastic Investigation Of Notched Corners In Square Apertures In Flat Plates Subjected To Tension, Lloyd E. Byrd Jr.

Masters Theses

"Photoelastic stress analysis is one of the most effective methods available to the engineer for solving problems of stress distribution. The effect of forces, such as pressure and tension may be studied using a scale model of a structural part. Special transparent models are subjected to forces proportional to those acting on the real object. The stress problem produced in the model indicates the stress distribution through a cross-section of the structural part.

Analysis of the photographic record of the stress analysis pattern provides data with a high degree of accuracy within a relatively short time. In simple cases, this …

The Design Of A Closed-Loop Voltage Regulator For A D-C Generator, Ernest P. Longerich Jan 1952

The Design Of A Closed-Loop Voltage Regulator For A D-C Generator, Ernest P. Longerich

Masters Theses

"The methods of obtaining voltage regulation for a d-c generator are many, and they vary in complexity according to the requirements of the loads being supplied.

A need for zero voltage regulation is not uncommon in power supplies that are used in laboratory work. It is frequently not enough, however, to have a supply whose steady state regulation is zero; the need may also exist for fast transient response to changes in load.

In general, then, the criteria for excellent voltage-versus-load characteristics of a d-c power supply might be stated as follows:

  1. It has zero steady state error.
  2. It has …

The Effect Of Impeller Speed And Air-Volume On The Flotation Rate With Respect To Particle Size, William Edward Horst Jan 1952

The Effect Of Impeller Speed And Air-Volume On The Flotation Rate With Respect To Particle Size, William Edward Horst

Masters Theses

"Today the ore being mined is low grade and the mineralization has become very complex. In order to concentrate a complex ore, the requirement of grinding the ore very fine is imposed. The process of flotation was developed to concentrate the finely ground ore particles; however, the finer size fractions of the ore still present a concentrating problem.

The fact has been established that the flotation rate which is the recovery that can be attained during a given time interval varies with particle size. The flotation rate increases with an increase in particle size until the maximum flotation rate is …

X-Ray Studies Of Zirconium Cyanonitride, John T. Ballass Jan 1952

X-Ray Studies Of Zirconium Cyanonitride, John T. Ballass

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research was to study, by means of x-ray and metallographic analysis, a material reported to be zirconium cyanonitride.

The x-ray analysis had a three fold purpose, the determination of the symmetry of the constituents, the number of phases present, and the crystal structure type. Metallography was used to confirm some of the results obtained by x-ray analysis establishing certain definite phase relationships present in the microstructure.

The sample investigated contained three principal elements namely zirconium, nitrogen, and carbon. On the basis of constitution this work is a contribution toward the development of the three component equilibrum …

Temperature Kinetics Of Nitrogen Dioxide-Ammonia Reactions, George Dillender Jr. Jan 1952

Temperature Kinetics Of Nitrogen Dioxide-Ammonia Reactions, George Dillender Jr.

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this project was to study the rapid rate of reaction of nitrogen dioxide and ammonia and if possible to determine the mechanism of the reaction.

The author became interested in this project through his interest in rockets, jets, and the types of fuel that are used to propel them.

The prospect of using nitrogen dioxide and ammonia as a possible fuel was the basic reason for the selection of this project.

Very little has been done in the study of the reaction of nitrogen dioxide and ammonia, although the reaction seems to be a simple one.

How …

Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei Jan 1952

Rehabilitation Of Land Stripped For Coal, Richard Matthaei

Masters Theses

"The usual connotation of the word rehabilitation as applied to land areas is the restoration of that land to its former efficiency. However, in the spirit of conservation that is essential to our standard of living, the word has begun to have added meaning. In the fullest concept, rehabilitation involves a study of soil characteristics and capabilities, and creation of productive uses of which the land was not capable in its original condition. The true conservationist has an opportunity to make a useful contribution to the future generations of this country. The United States Forestry Service and the United States …

Clipper Amplitude Modulator, Durmuş Öcal Jan 1952

Clipper Amplitude Modulator, Durmuş Öcal

Masters Theses

"An amplitude modulated wave is defined as a wave form in which the amplitude of a sinusoidal signal (carrier) is varied in accordance with a modulating signal whose frequency is much lower than the frequency of the carrier signal. Numerous devices have been found for generating an amplitude modulated wave. In some modulators the amplitude of the carrier is actually varied in accordance with the modulating signal. In other types of modulators the carrier and the modulating signal are simultaneously applied to a nonlinear element or circuit. The output of this non-linear element is a distorted wave containing many frequencies. …

Transfer Function Of The Modified Kramer System, David L. Hillhouse Jan 1952

Transfer Function Of The Modified Kramer System, David L. Hillhouse

Masters Theses

"The use of operational mathematics in the solution of engineering problems has grown tremendously in the last two decades, particularly during the last war. This has come about because of the facility with which problems which would be almost impossibly complicated or tedious to solve by classical methods can be solved using operational calculus.

The operational calculus, particularly the Laplace transform method, has become especially useful in the field of servomechanisms and controls. Here the constantly increasing complexity of systems used has resulted in very high order differential equations. The fact that the Laplace transform method makes it possible to …

Direct Reduction Of Zinc Sulfide Under Vacuum, Merritt E. Langston Jan 1952

Direct Reduction Of Zinc Sulfide Under Vacuum, Merritt E. Langston

Masters Theses

"The present work is a continuation of the previous investigations of Gross and Warrington and Liu in which the effect of various reducing agents on the vacuum reduction of zinc sulfide was studied. The author became interested in this topic while reading the papers by these investigators in which they recommended that further work be performed in an attempt to prevent zinc sulfide from distilling over during reduction, thereby contaminating the zinc condensate. The original plan was to perform a few runs for the purpose of duplicating the results that were reported by Liu, and from this point carry on …

Serrated Wire For Welded Wire Fabric, Homer F. Thompson Jan 1952

Serrated Wire For Welded Wire Fabric, Homer F. Thompson

Masters Theses

"The Wire Reinforcement Institute, Inc., is concerned, primarily, with gathering data and technical information to substantiate the following:

  1. That welded wire fabric, when used as a reinforcement in concrete, distributes the stresses throughout the concrete slab, as has been maintained by engineers during the past 40 years.
  2. That welded wire fabric provides adequate crack control within the working limits of the fabric.

In order to efficiently accomplish Objectives 1 and 2 above, we wish to establish:

  1. The safe working stress that we can safely recommend for welded wire fabric -- both in bond and tension.
  2. The proper spacing of longitudinal …

Experimental Techniques In The Kinetic Study Of Rapid Gas Phase Reactions, William Dean Burch Jan 1952

Experimental Techniques In The Kinetic Study Of Rapid Gas Phase Reactions, William Dean Burch

Masters Theses

“In recent years chemical kinetics has assumed a prominent role in Chemical Engineering studies. While a considerable amount of data is available in the general field, very little is available for rapid gas phase reactions, i. e., reactions that are completed in from a few milliseconds up to a few seconds. Recently techniques have been developed for the measurement of the rate of such reactions.

With the advent of jet aircraft, the study of very rapid oxidation reactions becomes imperative. One such reaction that presents itself in this category is the oxidation of anhydrous ammonia in the vapor state by …

Dissociation And Relative Stability Of Sodium Fluotitanate, Walter L. Gage Jan 1952

Dissociation And Relative Stability Of Sodium Fluotitanate, Walter L. Gage

Masters Theses

"Titanium is urgently needed in the armament industry especially as a substitute for 18-8 stainless steel. There would be an almost inexhaustible supply of ores of titanium if high-purity titanium metal could be produced economically in large quantities. The use of titanium would permit much of the scarce nickel and chromium to be made available for other important uses.

It has been found by H. C. Kawecki and E. J. Bielecki that high-purity Na2TiF6, K2TiF6, and (NH4)2TiF6 can be produced from iron-bearing titaniferous raw material, ilmenite ores, or a …

Activation Energy For Recrystallization In Rolled Silver, Krishan Kumar Tangri Jan 1952

Activation Energy For Recrystallization In Rolled Silver, Krishan Kumar Tangri

Masters Theses

"In several metals the process of recrystallization is accompanied by a change in the orientation of the recrystallized material with respect to the cold rolled material. If the change is sufficiently large, the changing position of the crystals can be determined by measuring the change in the intensity of the characteristic Bragg-reflection with a Geiger counter x-ray spectrometer. Recent determinations of the activation energies of copper and a 50/50 iron-nickel alloy have been made by using this x-ray technique. Both of these metals show a decided shift in the orientation as the material is recrystallized.

Silver was examined to find …

Analysis Of Magnetic Amplifiers Based On Assumed Analytical Expressions Of B-H Characteristics, Wiley Talley Ruhl Jan 1952

Analysis Of Magnetic Amplifiers Based On Assumed Analytical Expressions Of B-H Characteristics, Wiley Talley Ruhl

Masters Theses

"In the past 10 years, magnetic amplifiers have received much attention in many different fields of engineering. Although the principles of this amplifier have been known since 1915, it has been forced into the background by the development of the vacuum tube amplifier, the need of better core material and better dry disk rectifiers.

The basic magnetic amplifier, or saturable reactor, is nothing more than an iron core reactance coil whose a-c impedance is controlled by a d-c premagnetization of the core. This d-c premagnetization may be obtained in a number of ways, the simplest of which is a separate …
