Halogenated Epoxide-Phenol Reactions A Mechanism Study, Richard L. Rowton Jan 1952

Halogenated Epoxide-Phenol Reactions A Mechanism Study, Richard L. Rowton

Masters Theses

"The object of this investigation was to study the reactions of two other halogenated epoxides--namely, 3-bromo-1,2-epoxybutane and l-bromo-2,3-epoxybutane--with the phenolate ion, with the hope that the results obtained would shed additional light upon the mechanisms of such reactions. At the present time, no direct practical applications of the results can be forseen. However, the information gained will be a worthwhile addition to the vast existing store of knowledge already at our disposal, and might be of some help to future investigators"--Introduction, page 2.

The Application And Utilization Of Mining Models For Instruction And Display, William M. Shepard Jan 1952

The Application And Utilization Of Mining Models For Instruction And Display, William M. Shepard

Masters Theses

"The subject of the utilization of mine models for instruction and display at institutions offering courses in mining engineering has not been widely discussed in the literature. The value of models as visual aids in teaching has long been recognized, and they have been extensively employed by some institutions and by some instructors. However, the writer believes that a wider range of types of models are suitable for instruction purposes than have been employed in the past, and that mining models, properly arranged and adequately labelled, may be used in displays to give both the layman and the beginning student …

Porosity-Permeability Relationships Of Unconsolidated Sands, Robert Marchel Ponder Jan 1952

Porosity-Permeability Relationships Of Unconsolidated Sands, Robert Marchel Ponder

Masters Theses

"Unconsolidated sand reservoirs containing oil and gas present difficult problems to the petroleum engineer. Among these problems is that of the determination of the reservoir porosity to facilitate oil and gas reserve and evaluation calculations.

This problem is especially difficult because, to the author's knowledge, no method has been devised to obtain a core sample of the unconsolidated sand that retains the same porosity and permeability characteristics in the laboratory as it had underground. As a result, the petroleum engineer must rely upon empirical methods of calculating the reservoir porosity when the sand is not consolidated.

Many investigators have attempted …

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Upon The Current Distribution And Radiation Pattern Of Crossbars On Yagi Receiving Antennas, Gerald F. Sinnamon Jan 1952

An Experimental Study Of The Effect Upon The Current Distribution And Radiation Pattern Of Crossbars On Yagi Receiving Antennas, Gerald F. Sinnamon

Masters Theses

"The development and widespread use of radar systems in World War 11, and the post-war television boom, has brought about a large amount of investigation in antenna arrays. One of the types of antennas commonly used on radar systems during the early part of the war, and one which finds wide usage today as a television receiving antenna, is the well known Yagi antenna...

Since television antennas are usually mounted out of doors, the antenna must be made mechanically strong to prevent whipping or twisting due to wind, and to prevent sagging due to icing or to its own weight. …

The Partition Function Of Silver, Ralph H. Lilienkamp Jan 1952

The Partition Function Of Silver, Ralph H. Lilienkamp

Masters Theses

"The study of the thermodynamic properties of solids at low temperatures has shown that most theories either break down or become too cumbersome.

A theory based upon a crystal lattice of atoms gives the best physical picture of a solid. Fisher has developed partition functions from this theory for the simple cubic, body-centered cubic, and the face-centered cubic lattices. In his paper Fisher gave three partition functions of increasing complexity and accuracy for each of the three lattices. In this paper the three partition functions for a face-centered cubic lattice shall be applied to silver and compared.

The Helmholtz free …

An Investigation As To The Uses Of The Topographic Map And Improvements Desired By The General Public, George O. Boeckman

Masters Theses

"The demand for topographic maps from hunters, fishermen, vacationers, professional engineers etc, has been increasing with each passing year. In 1940 people bought some 700,000 copies of topographic maps. In 1946 sales had jumped to well over 2,000,000 copies. Civilian use of these maps by veterans has contributed substantially to the tremendous expansion of demand for maps since World War II. In recent years, the quality of topographic maps has been greatly improved by refinements in methods and by the use of aerial photography in map compilation. This advancement, and an ever-increasing demand from engineers, geologists, and many others for …

Autographic Determination Of Thermally-Induced Linear Changes In Ceramic Bodies, William Dean Mckee Jr. Jan 1952

Autographic Determination Of Thermally-Induced Linear Changes In Ceramic Bodies, William Dean Mckee Jr.

Masters Theses

"The determination of changes in length of ceramic compositions as a function of temperature is frequently required in ceramic research and testing. With the use of an observer, excellent means are available for determination of changes in length over moderate ranges of temperature. However, the extended period required for some tests makes desirable the automatic recording of length change as a function of temperature.

There has been in use in the Ceramic Engineering Department a furnace arranged for determination of length changes; this furnace, shown in Figure 1, is so arranged that change in sample length causes linear displacement of …

An Investigation Of End-Anchorage And Performance Of Sr-4 Strain Gages On A Prestressed Concrete Beam, Howard W. Nunez Jr. Jan 1952

An Investigation Of End-Anchorage And Performance Of Sr-4 Strain Gages On A Prestressed Concrete Beam, Howard W. Nunez Jr.

Masters Theses

"In recent years there has been brought to the attention of engineers and architects a new medium of construction---prestressed concrete. Reinforced concrete has long been recognized as a satisfactory material for use in the construction of buildings, bridges, highways, tanks and other structures. However, most concrete designers will concede that this material has many drawbacks. For instance, in a simple beam of rectangular cross-section, roughly only one half or the concrete is relied on to resist compressive forces. The tensile strength of the concrete is considered to be zero, and steel bars or rods must be inserted to carry the …

The Effect Of Grain Size On Shearing Strength Of Sand, Keyhan Samimi Jan 1952

The Effect Of Grain Size On Shearing Strength Of Sand, Keyhan Samimi

Masters Theses

"The object of this study is to determine experimentally the effect of definite grain size on the shearing characteristics of sandy soils. As it will be discussed in detail under the article - The Mechanics of Shear, the shearing characteristics of sandy soils depends on many factors such as grain size and shape, soil structure and relative density, the water content of soil. An attempt is made throughout the entire investigation to determine the effect of definite grain size on the shearing value and the angle of internal friction under the dry and saturated conditions. Furthermore, the results of shear …

Masters Theses

"The object of this research was to prepare first the simplest homologue of the epoxy-ketone considered by Russell to have been his product. If this homologue, 4-benzoyl-4-methyl-1,2-epoxypentane, could be prepared and caused to form a cyclic derivative of the type given by 1,4-diketones with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone, the organic chemist would be given a new approach to substituted 1,2-diazines as well as a previously unreported reaction of the epoxide grouping. If this reaction could be made to occur, other epoxides of this series would be prepared and treated in the same manner.

It was decided that the shortest route to 4-benzoyl-4-methyl-1,2-epoxypentane would …

A Comparison Of The Relative Effectiveness Of Teaching Seventh Grade Arithmetic With A Textbook And Without A Textbook, Alfred John Reynolds

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The Place of Arithmetic in Modern Education

The subject of arithmetic is as old as human history itself and yet it holds a very important place in modern education. In order to have a clear understanding of its present position it is desirable that a brief history of arithmetic be given. Since the history of arithmetic is long and since much has been written concerning it, an attempt will be made here to cover only the main thread in its development.

The Babylonians, according to records, made the first use of arithmetic. Karpinski …

An Experimental Study Of The Relative Effectiveness Of Drill And Incidental Teaching In The Learning Of The Multiplication Tables, Rena May Gates Jun 1951

An Experimental Study Of The Relative Effectiveness Of Drill And Incidental Teaching In The Learning Of The Multiplication Tables, Rena May Gates

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The Importance of Arithmetic

Man, since ancient times, has found a need for the use of numbers. This need started with simple numeration of quantities in daily life, and developed gradually to the complex use of arithmetic in trade and exchange. In the simplest form of family life, the number sense was exhibited in counting members of the family, years in one's life, or articles in one's possession. But as a family contacted other groups, and simple exchange took place, a gradual increase in need for numbers resulted in greater use of systems …

A Recommended Program Of Related Instruction For Electrical Apprentices, Andrew C. Luff

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The Role of Apprenticeship

The institution of apprenticeship has been an important educational process since the beginning of history. Centuries ago trade skills were passed on from father to son, and from master to novice through an association whereby the craftsman taught the novice the skills of his trade. Down through history apprenticeship has flourished either in one form or another, and today it is an important part of the industrial system. Apprenticeship has developed in accord with industrial progress.

In order to avoid confusion, it may be well at the outset to designate the meaning of …

An Analysis Of Aviation Education In Senior High School Textbooks, Herbert E. Ellinger May 1951

An Analysis Of Aviation Education In Senior High School Textbooks, Herbert E. Ellinger

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Mankind has emerged from the Stone Age through the Ages of Iron, Steam, and Electricity to the present Air-Age. This latter age is characterized by man's utilization of air for travel, transportation, and communication.1 It is common knowledge that the Air-Age has a number of social implications. More of our citizens are going abroad and more foreigners are visiting the United States than was possible, a few years ago, with slow moving surface transportation. Military planes now fly round-trips between continents without stopping. There are few places that are not within reach of air transportation. Hence, …

"Within the past few years the development of oil-base drilling fluids has become one of the more important contributions to drilling and production technology. The use or these new muds has increased as the benefits obtained have become more widely known and appreciated. Major problems in the petroleum industry have been, for many years, the contamination or drilling muds by salt water; control of mud when drilling through anhydrite, gypsum, or salt deposits; control of heaving or swelling shale; and water or mud blocking or the producing horizons. The development or oil-base drilling fluids is a direct contribution or engineers …

Recovering Oil From An Unconsolidated Sand By Means Of Combustion, David K. Anderson Jan 1951

Recovering Oil From An Unconsolidated Sand By Means Of Combustion, David K. Anderson

Masters Theses

"For many years, there has been talk expressing great concern about the oil reserves in the United States. Every four or five years, articles are published stating that we are running out of oil and our proved reserves, to date, are only adequate, at our present rate of consumption, for about 20 years. While this is true, it does not leave us with the complete picture. The industry in the past 20 years has never had more than a 20 year reserve. It must be said, however, that it is becoming more difficult with each passing year to find oil …
