"This thesis represents a study which was made to evaluate and interpret the downstream variations in the quality of the Meramec River gravels as coarse aggregate for concrete. Since gravel deposits constitute a valuable resource for a region, it is desirable that extent and quality variations of these deposits are known. It was hoped that an evaluation of certain properties of the Meramec River gravels would assist in determining the value of the Meramec River as undeveloped aggregate source by indicating the relative quality of the gravels from alternate sites of the river. "There is a lack of procedures that can be used to find good internal state assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits operating in the non-normal mode. Presented here, are two generalized state assignments, which are functions only of the number of rows in a flow table. The suggested bounds for the generalized state assignments are m + [log₂m] and m + [m/2] internal state variables for a 2^m-row flow table, where [ ] means "next lowest integer". Both generalized state assignments produce group (linear) codes. The algorithms for generating these internal state assignments are easy and straight-forward to implement. …

"The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of thermal-mechanical processing on the exfoliation corrosion resistance of an aluminum-zinc-magnesium-copper alloy. the aluminum alloy used was commercially available 7178 alloy in two thicknesses, 0.390 inch thick and 0.250 inch thick. this material was reduced 10, 25 and 40% in thickness in both the annealed and solution heat treated conditions. The material was then aged to a high strength condition, T6, or T8, in the case of the material reduced in the solution heat treated condition. "A portion of the Precambrian rocks located in the vicinity of Eminence, Missouri are studied and describes. These rocks are exposed as rhyolitic knobs protruding through hills of Ordovician sediments. The Precambrian rocks under study consist principally of rhyolite, with smaller amounts of tuff and creccis. The rhyolite is a potash rhyolite porphyry, both flow banded and unbanded, with phenocrysts of kaolinized orthoclase in a matrix of quartz and orthoclase. The tuffs contain devitrified glass shards and occasional ash balls such as those exhibited at Cott Mountain. A stratigraphic sequence was determined with the oldest rocks to the south at …

"The effect of axial mixing in the liquid phase on the performance of a gas absorption column was studied using the experimental data of Michael Brittan for the carbon dioxide and water system. In this study, piston flow conditions were assumed for the gas phase. A one-parameter mathematical model, which characterized the flow regimes in both the gas and the liquid phases undergoing plug flow conditions, was first curve fitted for its unknown parameter (i.e. the Number of Transfer Units) by a non-linear regression analysis procedure. "An experimental study was made to test a theory developed for scraped-surface heat exchange. The apparatus was a cylindrical vessel equipped with two blades and baffles, cooled in an ice bath. The experiments showed the approach of dimensionless temperature deviated greatly from the theoretical prediction. It was found that part of this effect was the result of a change in temperature of the scraped wall, which could be accounted for by using the overall heat transfer coefficient between the cooling medium and the apparatus. Measurements on water showed the cooling rate to be much faster than the theory would predict. …
