Effects Of Colloidal Materials And Polyelectrolytes On Carbon Adsorption In Aqueous Solution., Jack Taylor Garrett Jr.

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of certain colloidal materials and long-chain polyelectrolytes on the adsorption efficiency of some selected activated carbons which were manufactured from both coal-based and lignite-based materials. Phenol was used as the adsorbate to determine the adsorption efficiency.

At the beginning of the study, four brands of activated carbon (i.e. Filtrasorb 400, Darco, Norit, and Witco 256) were tried, based on the preliminary adsorption data, two activated carbons were subsequently selected for use throughout the entire study. These were Calgon's Filtrasorb 400 and American Norit's Norit activated carbons. The former represents a …

Ionic Thermal Current In Sodium-Rubidium Silicate Glasses., Chi-Ming Hong Jan 1975

Ionic Thermal Current In Sodium-Rubidium Silicate Glasses., Chi-Ming Hong

Masters Theses

"The ionic thermal current (ITC) method has been employed to study alkali ion motion in a sodium silicate glass and two sodium-rubidium silicate glasses over the temperature range 110 ° K to 400 ° K. T wo peaks and three peaks were observed in a l.0Na2O-3.0SiO2 glass and a 0.75Na2O-0.25Rb2O-3.0SiO2 glass, respectively. Only one peak and a high temperature shoulder were observed in the 0.50Na2O-0.50Rb2O-3.0SiO2 glass. These peaks were attributed to orientation and space charge polarization with each peak associated with a particular movement of the sodium …

The Development Of A Selection Model For Coal Conversion Processes., Karen Aldridge Dollar Jan 1975

The Development Of A Selection Model For Coal Conversion Processes., Karen Aldridge Dollar

Masters Theses

"Present research endeavors involving coal conversion technology have encompassed comparisons of the processes on the basis of economics or efficiency. These comparisons lack completeness because many intangible factors pertinent to the evaluations of the processes have been ignored.

A model has been developed to aid in the selection of the optimum coal conversion process for a given situation. The model includes a method for the evaluation of quantifiable factors which affect the decision-making procedure, and also includes methods by which the non-quantifiable factors which are important to the situation may be evaluated. This is a more complete form of decision-making …

Experimental Study Of Electron Density And Confinement Time In An Electrostatically-Plugged Cusp Device Using A Microwave Interferometer, Robert Louis Hayward

Masters Theses

"The average electron density and electron confinement time in an electrostatically plugged magnetic spindle cusp device are studied using a 20 GHz microwave interferometer. The results are compared with the predictions from approximate theoretical equations. With a magnetic induction in the point cusp of 5000 Gauss, a plasma is produced by injecting a 5 mA, 500 eV electron beam into hydrogen gas at 10-5 Torr. The measured electron density is 2 x 10-10 cm-3 and the measured confinement time is 80 ysec, which agree to within a factor of two with values predicted by theory"--Abstract, page ii.

Geochemical And Biogeochemical Studies In The Hansonburg Mining District, New Mexico, Alan Nathan Silverman

Masters Theses

"The Hansonburg mining district is in Socorro county in south central New Mexico. A Paleozoic section of thick Pennsylvanian limestone units, thin shale and arkose layers and thick Permian units of sandstone, siltstone and gypsiferous beds interlayered with thin limestone units unconformably overlie a Precambrian basement of granite. The sedimentary rocks are folded with north trends and plunges. Northerly, some easterly and northwesterly trending faults cut the folds. Galena, fluorite, and barite mineralization occurs along some of the northerly faults and as bedded replacements and fissure fillings in the Pennsylvanian Council Spring limestone.

Geological mapping and geochemical soil surveys of …

A Geochemical And Microscopic Study Of A Recently Discovered Deposit In Southern Illinois Fluorspar District., Prachon Chareonsri Jan 1975

A Geochemical And Microscopic Study Of A Recently Discovered Deposit In Southern Illinois Fluorspar District., Prachon Chareonsri

Masters Theses

"A bedding-replacement fluorite deposit, discovered by recent drilling in the northeast part of the Cave in Rock district, southern Illinois, has been studied by a combination of geochemical, X-ray, and microscopic techniques. The dispersion pattern for trace zinc, lead, cadmium and copper concentrations in carbonate host rocks adjacent to the fluorspar deposit, determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry, appears to hold only little hope in serving as an aid to exploration. Only cadmium anomalies appear closely related to the known fluorspar ore, and those values are not greatly above background.

Broad zinc and cadmium anomalies and a narrow lead anomaly are …

A Method For Verifying The Kalman Conjecture., Charles Edward Connelly Jan 1975

A Method For Verifying The Kalman Conjecture., Charles Edward Connelly

Masters Theses

"The Kalman and Aizerman conjectures are of value because, if true, they allow the replacement of a nonlinear stability problem by an equivalent linear stability problem. However, the conjectures are not true in general. This thesis presents a method for verifying the Kalman conjecture. A theorem is also presented which extends the usefulness of the method and allows several very general results to be obtained. The method is based on an off-axis circle criterion of Cho and Narendra and a consideration of the curvature of the Nyquist locus of the transfer f unction. A table is included which summarizes the …

Using Ibm's Information Management System To Implement A Relational Data Base, Melvin Arthur Rushton Jan 1975

Using Ibm's Information Management System To Implement A Relational Data Base, Melvin Arthur Rushton

Masters Theses

"A relational model of data has been the topic of several papers which deal with the question of the underlying design philosophy of data base systems. E. F. Codd, C. J. Date, and others have discussed the application of relation theory to formatted data, the objectives of such an approach, normalization of relations, and languages for manipulating the model (data sublanguages). Few papers have delt with storage constructs or access techniques for a relational data base. Indeed, it was not necessary that they do so, for the user of such a system is only concerned with the information available in …

The Social History Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Therapeutic Outcome, Susan E. Suter Jan 1975

The Social History Questionnaire As A Predictor Of Therapeutic Outcome, Susan E. Suter

Masters Theses

One of the most critical problems encountered in clinical practice concerns the outcome criteria used for predicting therapeutic improvement. At present, there is no single outcome criteria that is universally accepted as evidence of improvement. Representative studies by Lubarsky et al (1971) have emphasized the magnitude of this problem by citing the many patient variables that may effect the outcome of a therapeutic relationship.

The importance of this therapeutic relationship in terms of time and committment on the part of both the therapist and the client, necessitates some objective means for first, the development of an instrument that can measure …

Homing Studies Of Bank Swallows In Eastern Illinois, Jennifer Eileen Hagerstrom

Masters Theses

A series of homing experiments using 39 color-marked Bank Swallows (Riparia riparia) were carried out in eastern Illinois during the summer of 1975. The swallow colony was located four km east-northeast of Charleston, Illinois at the Charleston Stone Quarry. Eight release sites were located in the four compass directions from the home colony at distances of 14.4 to 32.3 km away.

The colony was approached before dawn and swallows were captured using tube traps. Birds were color-marked, banded, and taken in individual bags to the release site by automobile. Cloud cover, wind velocity, wind direction, and orientation behavior …

The Histology Of The Pineal Gland In Odocoileus Virginianus, Terry Michael De Villiers Jan 1975

The Histology Of The Pineal Gland In Odocoileus Virginianus, Terry Michael De Villiers

Masters Theses

A total of 26 pineal glands from the white-tailed deer were histologically examined. Five different stains were utilized to determine various cell types present in pineal tissue. Connective tissue septa divide the pineal gland into incompletely separated lobules which are supplied by a very extensive vascular system. The pinealocyte is the most numerous cell in the gland and is most easily recognized by a prominent nucleus approximately 6-8 microns in diameter. The pinealocyte cytoplasm contains many minute granules. A distinct difference was noted in the histology of the oldest age deer pineal (age 7 years) when globular granules were observed …

Method Of Karyotype Determination For Cercaria: Application To Family Azygiidae (Trematoda), James Everett Mick

Masters Theses

The development of a method for karyotype determination of cercaria provides a basis for comparative karyotype analysis between cercaria and adult, possibly eliminating the need for infection experiments for positive identification of cercaria. Snails (Goniobasis livescens) were collected from below the spillway of Lake Charleston, on the Embarras River, near Charleston, Illinois. Of a total of 196 snails collected 42 (21.5%) were found to be infected with undetermined furcocyticercous cercariae. Infected snails were detected through isolation procedure. From the infected snails, emerged and non-emerged forms of the cercaria were recovered. Whole mounts of the cercaria were made and …
