Effects Of Lake Management On Chemical, Physical, And Phycological Characteristics Of A Hypereutrophic Reservoir, Kaye J. Surratt

Masters Theses

Lake Charleston is a 1.1 billion gallon capacity side channel reservoir which was constructed in 1982 as a public drinking water supply for the City of Charleston in Coles County, Illinois. Past studies of the lake indicated an increase in eutrophication and the capacity to support large algal populations. Recent lake management practices include copper sulfate applications as an algicide and aeration to reduce flavor and odor.

In order to assess present lake status and to evaluate the effectiveness of lake management practices, two lake sites were sampled on a weekly basis from May to October, 1989. Chemical, physical, and …

The Effect Of Growth Regulators On Rough Turf At Coles County Airport, Salliana Ryan Erwin Jan 1990

The Effect Of Growth Regulators On Rough Turf At Coles County Airport, Salliana Ryan Erwin

Masters Theses

Twenty-five different combinations of plant growth regulators were evaluated with respect to their effectiveness in controlling rough turf at Coles County Memorial Airport (Illinois). Germination inhibition, control of plant height, suppression of seedheads, and phytotoxicity were considered. Postemergence applications were more effective than preemergence applications in the overall control of the vegetation present. Of the regulators tested, a combination of Escort (metsulfuron methyl; 1/3 oz/acre) and Oust (sulfometuron methyl; 1/4 oz/acre) provided the best postemergence control of both plant height and seedhead suppression, though associated phytotoxic effects were severe. Two other effective combinations were noted: Event (imazethapyr, imazapyr; 10 oz/acre) …

This study examined the use of quasi-words in eight normally developing infants from eight-and-one-half months to ten-and-one-half months . The infants were video-taped for thirty minutes once a week for 16 consecutive weeks . Spontaneous utterances were transcribed and categorized as babbling, quasi-words, or true words . Utterances were additionally analyzed to determine phonetic inventories, dominant place and manner, and syllable shapes.

Results revealed the use of quasi-words by all subjects . Further analysis revealed that subjects utilized two types of quasi-words, primitive quasi-words and complex quasi-words. Results revealed a correlation between complex quasi-words and true-words . Results further revealed …

The Zen Of Stevens, Rebecca Dickens Jan 1990

The Zen Of Stevens, Rebecca Dickens

Masters Theses

Using comparative studies as background, I develop a Zen model for reading Stevens, arguing that his poetry works in the manner of Zen anecdotes and that it can be understood better by understanding Zen. Three critical studies of Wallace Stevens and Zen assert the Zen-like qualities of Stevens' poetry. Stevens has affinities with Zen writers in three areas: use of language, explorations into the nature of thought, and the structure of anecdotes and poems.

I develop a terminology in order to construct my model, giving attention to the definitions and interrelations of terms such as logical thought, figurative thought, paradox, …

In both of these sand savanna communities the dominant overstory tree was Quercus velutina. These two communities differed mainly in the composition of their woody ground layer species. Rubus hispidus obovalis had the highest relative …

David Copperfield And Great Expectations: A Comparison Of Dickens' Bildungsromane, Donald R. Price Jan 1990

David Copperfield And Great Expectations: A Comparison Of Dickens' Bildungsromane, Donald R. Price

Masters Theses

Charles Dickens wrote two autobiographical novels which are developed in the Bildungsroman genre. Although the self-formation of the two young heroes, David in David Copperfield and Pip in Great Expectations, are very similar, reflecting the struggles in Dickens' own development, there is an important and interesting difference in the forces that influence each young hero. This difference evolves from Dickens' responses to forces affecting his life at the time he wrote David Copperfield in 1849-50 and Great Expectations in 1860.

This thesis addresses the internal forces influencing David's development, contrasting them with the external forces to which Pip must …

Parental Attitudes And Opinions Of Central City School District #133, David Daum Jan 1990

Parental Attitudes And Opinions Of Central City School District #133, David Daum

Masters Theses

The accountability of the nation’s schools is an area of great public concern. A useful tool that a school district may use in becoming more accountable to the public is a parent opinion inventory. The inventory may serve as one step in the process of bridging the gap between public expectations of the school district and its actual performance. This study measured the opinions of fifty-seven parents about the performance of the Central City school district. The opinions were determined by a fifty-one item inventory issued to parents in grades kindergarten through grade eight. Recommendations, based upon inventory results, were …

Application Of Zero-Base Budgeting In The Learning Resource Center, Javad Raiesdana Jan 1990

Application Of Zero-Base Budgeting In The Learning Resource Center, Javad Raiesdana

Masters Theses

Budgeting is a statement of the organizational goals and objectives in monetary terms. Traditionally, budgets have been developed by adding to the previous year's budget as a base (at least in theory), but rather to start from a zero base and requires a justification of all expenditures. This method of budgeting assumes that each years's budget requests are built up from zero in response to the priorities and needs of that year.

The range of opinion about zero-base budgeting is broad. Some critics regard it to be of great value while others feel that it is inadequate. The purpose of …

Indirect Photometric Chromatography Of Inorganic And Organic Anions Using Benzoate As An Eluent, Shahab A. Shamsi Jan 1990

Indirect Photometric Chromatography Of Inorganic And Organic Anions Using Benzoate As An Eluent, Shahab A. Shamsi

Masters Theses

For many years the determination of common inorganic and organic anions was hindered by the lack of adequately sensitive analytical techniques. The determination of these anions was laborious and time consuming (e.g. titration, precipitaion, gravimetric analysis etc.). Because of the development of high-performance liquid chromatography, the anion exchange separation of simple inorganic and organic anions is now possible. Now, there are a broad and ever-increasing array of chromatographic methods supplanting these older chemical methods. However, detection is still a problem, but indirect detection provides a practical route for the detection of non-chromophoric inorganic and organic anions.

This dissertation describes the …

This project analyzes and measures the physical benefits of horseback riding on …

Copper Accumulation By Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma Cepedianum) In The Charleston Side Channel Reservoir, Mark T. Christ Jan 1990

Copper Accumulation By Gizzard Shad (Dorosoma Cepedianum) In The Charleston Side Channel Reservoir, Mark T. Christ

Masters Theses

Exposure to trace heavy metals is being extensively studied in relation to their adverse and toxic effects on organisms. Processes affecting compartmentalization, biogeochemical cycling, and transport of trace metals in ecological systems must be elucidated if the impact of trace metal releases on biota are to be understood. Because elemental cycles are often closely linked to hydrologic processes, freshwater and marine systems serve as both vectors and sinks for trace metals in the environment. The regular addition of a heavy metal into an aquatic ecosystem will undoubtedly increase its persistance for availability to the existing biota. Once in the environment, …

Performance Expectation Based Broadcast Education, Mark L. Hamilton Jan 1990

Performance Expectation Based Broadcast Education, Mark L. Hamilton

Masters Theses

Parcells (1985; Parcells & Hadwiger, 1984) data from a census survey of every commercial radio station manager in five states (Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa) to ascertain entry-level skills, long-term success characteristics, and advice for success in radio careers indicated that a reorientation of broadcast education was in order. Essentially, it challenged higher educators to respond by revising curriculum, instruction, textbooks, advisement, and overall subject matter to reflect the "new reality" of the communication industry. This study moves beyond the area of curriculum and instruction to discover whether broadcast graduates are being properly prepared for careers in the communication …

This study also attempted to determine if there were any significant differences in attitudes among siblings based on four independent variables (sex of the sibling, birth order of the sibling, type of handicap afflicting the brother or sister, and degree of the handicap). These independent variables were compared on the following categories: personal feelings, positive attitudes, negative attitudes, and future concerns. A pilot survey containing questions about sibling attitudes was distributed to eight siblings who were enrolled in four-year public …

Broadband Impedance Matching Using Multi-Section Quarter-Wave Transformers, Alan Richard Webber Jan 1990

Broadband Impedance Matching Using Multi-Section Quarter-Wave Transformers, Alan Richard Webber

Masters Theses

"The history of the multi-section quarter-wave transformer is traced from its beginnings with lumped-element ladder networks in the l 930's. Starting with the geometric mean formula from quarter-wave transformer theory, and insisting on small reflections at the input, a formula is developed for choosing the step impedances of a multi-section quarter-wave transformer. Bandwidth and ripple of a multi-section quarter-wave transformer frequency response are investigated through computer simulation of transformers designed using this formula and found to be directly related. Bandwidth is found to be directly related to the number of sections, and inversely related to the relative mismatch which the …

Molecular Mobility In A Model Polymer Composite, Joan Ethel Gambogi Jan 1990

Molecular Mobility In A Model Polymer Composite, Joan Ethel Gambogi
