Expression Of Integrated And Methylated Hiv-Ltr In Human T-Cells And Monkey Kidney Cells By Frog Virus 3 Infection, Celene M. Spangler
Expression Of Integrated And Methylated Hiv-Ltr In Human T-Cells And Monkey Kidney Cells By Frog Virus 3 Infection, Celene M. Spangler
Masters Theses
DNA methylation has been implicated in the suppression of transcription of a large spectrum of eukaryotic genes. Frog virus 3 (FV3) contains genomic DNA that is the most extensively methylated of all known animal viruses. However, FV3 gene expression is tightly regulated in a sequential fashion in infected cells. Therefore, FV3 must have evolved mechanism(s) to overcome the inhibitory effects of DNA methylation. FV3 has been shown to induce expression of methylated foreign genes in transient transfections. This study was designed to establish if this FV3 induced expression of methylated genes could be demonstrated in stable cell lines which contain …

An International Comparison Of Lower Elementary School Schedules, Barbara Helen Wyns
An International Comparison Of Lower Elementary School Schedules, Barbara Helen Wyns
Masters Theses
International comparisons indicate that U.S. students test below other industrialized countries. Researchers identify a shorter school day and year as a possible reason. While recognizing the fundamental differences from country to country, this study focuses on the measurable variables; days of instruction per year and total hours of instruction for lower elementary students. Comparisons with Japan, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, and the United States, find that U.S. instructional days are fewer, however, the length of day is longer, and that total annual hours are second only to Japan. The amounts of homework and out of school learning are also discussed. The …

The Effects Of A Wetland On Ground-Water Quality In An Agriculturally Impacted Aquifer, Marilyn Ann Betts
Masters Theses
Nitrate concentrations in excess of U.S. EPA standards have been documented for farm wells in an area where hog production and row crops are the predominant forms of agribusiness. The aquifer serving this area is in glacial deposits of interbedded sand, clay, gravel and till. The upper, unconfined, sand and gravel unit of the aquifer is connected to a flow-through wetland. Five well nests, with wells at various depths, were installed in and around the wetland. Samples were taken from the wells in both winter and summer to establish temporal and spatial changes in ground-water quality parameters.
Concentrations of nitrate, …
Floorplanning For Mixed Block And Cell Designs, Arun G. Shanbhag
Floorplanning For Mixed Block And Cell Designs, Arun G. Shanbhag
Masters Theses
Floorplanning is one of the important phases of the VLSI Physical Design cycle. The quality of a floorplan is usually not evident until the routing phase. A bad floorplan can lead to an unroutable design requiring another iteration of the floorplanning phase. Use of over-the-cell routing has led to zero routing footprints. Any further reduction in area of the layout is possible only by reducing the white space or the vacant space from the floorplan, that is by improving the floorplan of the layout.
Currently, the Mixed Block and Cell (MBC) design style is gaining popularity. This evolving design style …
Effects Of Alkaline Internal Sizing On Rotogravure Print Quality Using Waterbased Inks, Michael L. Busche
Effects Of Alkaline Internal Sizing On Rotogravure Print Quality Using Waterbased Inks, Michael L. Busche
Masters Theses
The effect of alkaline internal sizing in improving paper smoothness and ink gloss in waterbased rotogravure printing was investigated. Papers were internally sized with alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) under alkaline conditions from slack-sized to hard-sized. Papers were printed with waterbased inks on a web gravure press. A major problem with waterbased inks is increased surface roughening of paper and a low ink gloss. Temporal surface roughening was reduced by increased AKD internal sizing with a concomitant significant increase of up to 400% in ink gloss. Surface properties were correlated with print quality. The print quality improved with increased hydrophobicity of …

The geochemical evolution of Low Molecular Weight Fatty Acids (LMWFA's) in various ground water samples and aquifer solid samples from both contaminated and uncontaminated sites has been studied. An improved analytical method has been established for both qualitative and quantitative determination of LMWFA's. The low molecular weight (LMW) organic acids are metabolic intermediates of the oxidative biodegradation of hydrocarbon contaminants. The hydrocarbons are believed to be the electron donors in these redox reactions. Formic and acetic acids were found to be the major LMWFA's in these ground water samples and aquifer solid samples. Their concentrations increase as the redox condition …
Laser-Rf Double Resonance Measurements Of The Hyperfine Structure Of V Ii, Gregory Michael Matous
Laser-Rf Double Resonance Measurements Of The Hyperfine Structure Of V Ii, Gregory Michael Matous
Masters Theses
We have measured the hyperfine structure of 51V II using the technique of collinear fast-ion-beam laser spectroscopy. The output of a dye laser was applied collinearly to an accelerated 50 ke V ion beam to produce laser induced fluorescence spectra for the metastable 3d34s and 3d4 configurations. The technique of laserradio- frequency double resonance, which utilizes an optical photon to deplete a hyperfine state and an rf photon to repopulate the state, was used to measure the hyperfine intervals to a high precision. These measurements of the hyperfine intervals allowed the determination of the magnetic …

A single-case study design was utilized. Data were collected from three in-depth interviews and observation of multiple treatment sessions.
The results suggest that this therapist's view of the world could be categorized into four areas: (1) What she believed about ultimate reality; (2) What she believed about life, death and eternity; (3) What she believed about human nature; and (4) What she believed about the nature of knowing. The study also suggests that this core world-view …
Kinematic Analysis Of Sprinting With And Without The Speed Chute, Douglas Roy West
Kinematic Analysis Of Sprinting With And Without The Speed Chute, Douglas Roy West
Masters Theses
The problem under investigation was to determine if kinematic differences existed when sprinting with and without the speed chute. Eight Western Michigan University Track and Field Athletes were filmed at 100 frames per second as they sprinted two trials with and without the speed chute.
Three ANOVAs and descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the effects of sprinting with and without the speed chute. Descriptive statistics provided information for numerous dependent variables. Although statistically significant differences (R < .05) existed between sprinting with and without the speed chute, those differences may not be practical for the coach to use in terms of evaluation of sprinting technique, because the differences would be difficult for the human eye to see. Therefore, the speed chute may be a viable training tool as kinematics were only minimally affected.

A Performance-Driven Routing Approach For Mcm-C, Qiong Yu
A Performance-Driven Routing Approach For Mcm-C, Qiong Yu
Masters Theses
In this paper, a new routing methodology for Ceramic MultiChip Module (MCM-C) is presented. In the proposed approach, the routing space is partitioned into several towers and the routing process is decomposed into three phases, namely, routing distribution, terminal assignment, and tower routing. During the routing distribution phase, the routing is uniformly distributed among towers. The locations of nets on the faces of each tower are assigned during the terminal assignment phase whereas the exact paths for the nets in each tower are determined during the tower routing phase.
The existing approaches to MCM routing are extensions of two-dimensional approaches …

The airfoil surface was tuned such that the frequency of the shedding vortex is a resonant frequency and two internally mounted acoustic drivers were used to excite the surface of the airfoil at the shedding vortex frequency. The effects on pressure …
Homo Tonos For Orchestra In Three Movements, Stephen C. Talaga
Homo Tonos For Orchestra In Three Movements, Stephen C. Talaga
Masters Theses
Homo Tonos is a work for large orchestra. The entire piece stems from a dodecaphonic system in which each family of instruments is assigned its own unique 12-tone row. The rows are constructed in such a way that when they are written out and stacked one atop the other, they create 12 unique vertical rows.
Throughout the work, the basic rules of 12-tone row manipulation were used as a foundation for organization of pitches. Each family of instruments adheres strictly to its own row except in passages where there are unisons across families. In these instances, the vertical 12-tone rows …
Studies Of The Effect Of Hydrophobic Filter Packs In Free Product Hydrocarbon Recovery Wells, Stephen J. Shank
Studies Of The Effect Of Hydrophobic Filter Packs In Free Product Hydrocarbon Recovery Wells, Stephen J. Shank
Masters Theses
Most free product hydrocarbon recovery wells are filter packed in order to prevent aquifer material from entering the well and to increase their effective diameter. Historically there are five factors in filter pack designs: grain size, grain shape, mineralogy, uniformity, and the filter pack diameter. Previous laboratory experiments found that filter packs treated with a water repellant chemical could dramatically improve well performance. This adds wettability as a sixth factor.
A desorption experiment was conducted to determine the feasibility of using a chemically treated filter pack in the subsurface. Analytical results of the leachate from the chemically treated sand indicated …
