Certain Trace Element Distribution In The Searchlight, Nevada Quartz Monzonite, Clark County, Nevada, Jai Nandan Shrivastava
Certain Trace Element Distribution In The Searchlight, Nevada Quartz Monzonite, Clark County, Nevada, Jai Nandan Shrivastava
Masters Theses
"The once prosperous gold, silver, copper and lead mines of the Searchlight mining district, Nevada, are situated along the south and western margins of a large quartz monzonite body. This intrudes the Precambrian gneisses and younger lava flows. Associated mineral veins show an eccentric type of zoning around the intrusive.
Seven rock samples of the quartz monzonite representing different parts of the intrusive were analyzed petrographically and spectrographically. Modal analyses and various types of rock alteration were investigated petrographically. Spectrochemical analyses of the rock samples and their major minerals were carried out for certain trace elements. A semi-quantitative method was …
The Effects Of Sulphur And Copper On Hot-Workability Of Pure Iron, Hung-Chi Chao
The Effects Of Sulphur And Copper On Hot-Workability Of Pure Iron, Hung-Chi Chao
Masters Theses
"The independent effects of sulphur, copper and their combinations on the hot-workability of pure iron free from other elements was studied, with special emphasis on the red-short phenomenon. Electrolytic pure iron with the addition of 0.023 cent sulphur, 0.33 per cent copper and 0.024 per cent sulphur plus 0.032 per cent copper along with a heat of only electrolytic pure iron was melted under vacuum, and cast under helium pressure. The specimens machined from the forged bars were tested at various temperatures by the hot twist-test and by the constant energy single blow drop forging test to evaluate the hot-workability …

Correlation Of Dust-Count Results By Zeiss Konimeter And Midget Impinger, Chandmal Jain
Masters Theses
"In this modern age, the scientific and technological developments have advanced mechanized mining to the status wherein the attendant dust problems have reached very serious hazard proportions. The significant roles, which have been perfected for the Zeiss konimeter and the midget impinger, in evaluating dust concentrations and thereby revealing possible improvements in making the atmospheric conditions safer, cannot be over emphasized.
While introducing the subject of this paper in the first chapter, the author has presented a historical resume, wherein he pointed out that performances of these instruments have not been correlated in the past. However, the work reported on …
A Method Of Estimating Groundwater Influx Into A Vertical Mine Shaft, Morris T. Worley
A Method Of Estimating Groundwater Influx Into A Vertical Mine Shaft, Morris T. Worley
Masters Theses
"Prediction of groundwater influx into mine openings is one of the more important pre-development problems encountered in mining. A satisfactory method of estimation would provide the information necessary for a mining company to dewater prior to shaft sinking, pre-grout the shaft area, or plan pumping schemes to handle the expected flow.
A standardized field method of estimating groundwater supply from pumping test data was developed by O. V. Theis and others. In the present research problem, the estimation procedure has been simplified by the use of nomograms. Certain modifications in the estimate must be made when a pumping well is …
A Geophysical Investigation Of An Area In Christian County, Missouri, Edwin J. Ballantyne Jr.
A Geophysical Investigation Of An Area In Christian County, Missouri, Edwin J. Ballantyne Jr.
Masters Theses
"A vertical intensity magnetic survey of 144 square miles in Christian County, southwest Missouri revealed an 825 gamma anomaly having a closure of 9 square miles. A three mile gravity traverse across the magnetic anomaly detected a positive gravity anomaly in excess of six mllligals.
Calculations showed that a Precambrian hill large enough to cause the observed magnetic anomaly would outcrop at the surface. Because Precambrian rocks are known to be buried under a sedimentary layer, this hypothesis was rejected.
Theoretical anomalies of several geometrical bodies at calculated depths were visually compared with the measured magnetic and gravity profiles. A …

Factors Of The Microclimate Affecting The Activity Of Fox Squirrels In Southwestern Michigan, Frederick K. Courville
Factors Of The Microclimate Affecting The Activity Of Fox Squirrels In Southwestern Michigan, Frederick K. Courville
Masters Theses
The fox squirrel, Sciurus niger rufiventer, is an important small game animal throughout much of the Midwest. Within the last thirty years several scientific investigations have been focused on this animal, the result being that its life history and ecology are fairly well known.
Concerning the range of the fox squirrel, D. L. Allen (1943:33) states that, in Michigan, the range began to increase with the advent of the pioneers. Baumgartner (1940) and J. M. Allen (1952) noted similar occurrences in their respective states, Ohio and Indiana. In Kansas, the fox squirrel, aided by agricultural land-use, has spread westward throughout …

Gladstone, The Irish Home Rule Question, And Its Effect On The Liberal Party, Kenneth John Van Dellen
Masters Theses
Introduction
Purpose
The Victorian Age of English history produced many great political leaders. Among the best known are Chamberlain, Disreali, Palmerston, Salisbury, and Gladstone. These politicians were able to pacify many dissatisfied groups and produce many reforms. Yet one of the biggest problems they had to face was left unsolved throughout the Victorian period, and the later Edwardian period as well. This problem was Ireland.
This research project will deal with the man who made one of the most persistent efforts of the nineteenth century to solve the Irish problem. It will attempt to show how William Ewart Gladstone become …
Beliefs And Attitudes Of Recent High School Graduates On The Subject Of Beverage Alcohol, Francis E. Chape
Beliefs And Attitudes Of Recent High School Graduates On The Subject Of Beverage Alcohol, Francis E. Chape
Masters Theses
Introduction
During recent years, many investigations concerning the teen-ager and beverage alcohol have been carried out. A survey of the available literature on this subject revealed that most of the studies have been made to determine the attitudes toward drinking and the drinking behavior of this age group. These studies, Maddox1 states, provide "The basis for generalizations about drinking in high school which are more substantial than impressionistic guesses."
Generalizations, however, have not been limited to drinking behavior alone. Alcohol education programs, required by law in every state in the union,2 have received much criticism in recent times. …
Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye
Business-Sponsored Films For Physical Science, Bertha Elizabeth Slye
Masters Theses
For many years business-sponsored films have been used widely in instruction in the science classroom. Because of the potential of the films in helping teachers bridge the gap between the fundamental teaching of scientific principles, and the applications found in the actual experiences of the student's consumer world, requests for them have often exceeded the output of those that are educationally sound. In the last decade in particular, the development of atomic and space technology, as well as the growing interest in science, have made it necessary to teach science beyond the confines of information in the ordinary science textbook. …

Mississippian Bioherms Of Southwestern Missouri And Northwestern Arkansas, Arthur R. Troell Jr.
Mississippian Bioherms Of Southwestern Missouri And Northwestern Arkansas, Arthur R. Troell Jr.
Masters Theses
"Lenticular bodies of massive limestone, flanked by thin crinoidal beds, crop out in southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. They are within the St. Joe limestone of the Lower Mississippian.
Strata underlying these bodies typically are down-warped, those on the flanks lapping against, finally passing completely over the limestone core. Dips away from the “reef” are commonly around 5 degrees, but reach as much as 30 degrees. Conglomeratic detritus, originating from the core, occurs in flanking beds at their contact with it.
Thin sections of these masses show no more than 15 per cent of the limestone to consist of fossil …
The Constitution Of Magnesium-Rich Magnesium-Zirconium Alloys, Kenneth Allen Fowler
The Constitution Of Magnesium-Rich Magnesium-Zirconium Alloys, Kenneth Allen Fowler
Masters Theses
"The magnesium-zirconium system has been studied to 0.8 per cent zirconium which represents the limit of solubility of zirconium in liquid magnesium at 950°C. Alloys have been prepared by two methods of alloy additions, and the results compared. Microstructural studies have been made of the alloys in the cast, extruded, and heat-treated conditions. The limit of solid solubility has been determined on the basis of resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity measurements, as well as by metallographic examination, with good agreement. A secondary structure resulting from precipitation of a second phase within cored regions of the alloy has been studied …
Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand
Water Resources Development -- An Analysis Of Economic Justification Practices Of The Corps Of Engineers, Kerwood W. Barrand
Masters Theses
"Presented herein is a brief analysis of the economic justification practices of the Corps of Engineers as commonly implemented in proposals concerning water resources projects. Where applicable, recommended methods are compared to similar methods advocated for, and accepted by, private engineering firms in similar situations.
The major problem exists in the lack of a profit motive in programs undertaken with the use of public funds. However, a profit can be said to have been realized in public works programs if the total benefits of the programs to all the people exceed the costs of these programs and, further, if the …
The Evaluation Of The Influence Of Large Aggregate On The Permeability Of Single-Grained Soils, Edward Clayton Grubbs
The Evaluation Of The Influence Of Large Aggregate On The Permeability Of Single-Grained Soils, Edward Clayton Grubbs
Masters Theses
"Each year many earth fill structures are designed and built with the primary purpose of impounding water. As these structures are only relatively impervious, engineers must consider the control of seepage in design. In order to predict seepage, the engineer must have knowledge of the potential flow or water through the earthen structure. He is, therefore, faced with the problem of determining a coefficient of permeability for use in design calculations.
The coefficient of permeability is easily enough determined for fine-grained materials. However, in construction it is very rare to find proper fill material which does not include quite a …
Preparation Of Casting Slips Containing Ferrous Powders And Alginates, Robert Eugene Newcomer
Preparation Of Casting Slips Containing Ferrous Powders And Alginates, Robert Eugene Newcomer
Masters Theses
"The preparation of casting slips containing ferrous powders dispersed by alginates was studied and an attempt was made to determine the mechanism by which suspension was attained. The colloidal aspects of preparing ceramic casting slips are discussed and an analogy is drawn to preparation of metallic slips suspended by alginates.
Sodium and ammonium alginates were used to suspend stainless steel and iron powders. The effect of NaOH, HC1, and various phosphate additions on the properties of slips and algin solutions was considered.
It was found that colloidal concepts can not be applied to explain observed behavior in the system studied. …

Occurrence Of Mineralized Ground Water In Southern St. Louis And Jefferson Counties, Missouri, Willard Glennon Owens
Masters Theses
"Mineralized ground water occurs at some localities in southeastern St. Louis and northern Jefferson counties, Missouri. This water is usually undesirable and is detrimental to development of ground water resources.
Water well records in the offices of the Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources provided data for a study of structure, lithology and occurrence of ground water. Water well drillers and property owners were interviewed to obtain additional information concerning drilling problems and quality of water.
Geologic cross-sections, subsurface contour maps and isochlorinity maps aided the study of lithology, structure and areal distribution of mineralized ground water. Relationship is suggested …
Effect Of Leaching On The Strength Properties Of A Hydrated Lime-Cement Stabilized Soil., Yurdakul Osman Ulugonul
Effect Of Leaching On The Strength Properties Of A Hydrated Lime-Cement Stabilized Soil., Yurdakul Osman Ulugonul
Masters Theses
"The stabilization of soil has been carried on since early historic times. The Romans used lime and volcanic ash as additives for this purpose. After the discovery of cement and its property of bonding soil particles it became one of the essential additives in the soil stabilization field. Many other kinds of additives have been developed and are being used today for soil stabilization.
A question that arises through the increasing use of stabilizers in soil is whether the changes that are effected are of a temporary or permanent nature. Changes may occur from the degradation of the stabilized soil …

An Analysis Of The Articulation Errors In Spontaneous Speech Of One Hundred Children With Lisps, Paula C. Downs
Masters Theses
The Problem
This study is an attempt to determine the nature and relative frequency of the articulation errors shown by one hundred school children with lisps.
The Importance of Investigating the Phenomenon of Defective Articulation
The incidence of speech defects in the child population has been found to range from five percent (5%) to ten percent (10%) of the total child population. A child's speech is considered defective when the listener gives as much or more attention to the manner in which the child speaks as he does to the idea being communicated.

A Review Of Fossilization Processes In Different Sedimentary Environments (With Special Reference To The Time Factor Of Deposition Of Ore Minerals Associated With Fossil Material, In Particular The Coprolitic Phosphate Deposits), Giovanna Reggiori Ligasacchi
Masters Theses
"This thesis offers a cross/section through some principal fossilization processes involving organic matter (animals and plants) during and after sedimentation. The influence of different environments during fossilization is considered. The chemical composition of some classes of living invertebrates and plants is compared with the chemical composition of same organisms as found in consolidated sediments as fossils.
Some literature on carbonates, oxides, silicates, phosphates, and sulphides in fossils is reviewed with particular attention to those instances where the fossils are associated with ore minerals. Special consideration is given to the occurrence and composition of fecal matter in recent and consolidated sediments. …
