"The technique used to grow single zinc crystals was based on the Bridgman method. Zinc-gold, zinc-aluminum, and zinc-magnesium alloys were prepared and their single crystals were grown. Four crystallographic planes of the single zinc crystals were used for both chemical and anodic etching. The zinc alloys were etched more easily by acids than the purest (99.999%) zinc. The etching patterns changed for the different crystallographic planes of the single zinc crystals.

The appearance of particles during anodic dissolution of the single zinc crystals depended on time, acid concentration and current density. The partial disintegration of single zinc crystals is promoted …

"There are no direct relationships available that provide a basis for bench design of multiple-bench, open-cut earth excavations in competent materials when power shovels are employed. This study was undertaken to determine if mathematical design expressions could be developed when the production rate, material's properties, and equipment operating characteristics were known.

Gallium dissolved very slowly in dilute acids like HC1, H₂SO₄and HCIO₄. The rate was substantially accelerated if the metal was connected with a platinum electrode in the same solution. From the volume of the hydrogen developed the trivalency of gallium ions going into solution was calculated. This same ionic charge was obtained from coulometric measurements using gallium-amalgam as the anode. The initial ionic charge of aluminum dissolving from an aluminum amalgam anode was evidenced as being plus three by coulometric measurements.

Gallium and aluminum anodes were found to partially disintegrate while the current flowed. …

"The tie line connecting the compounds 3CaO·Al₂O₃ and Na₂O·8CaO·3Al₂O₃ in the ternary system CaO-Al₂O₃-Na₂O was studied at 1250° Celsius.

It was determined that Na₂O can exist in crystalline solution with 3CaO·Al₂O₃ in percentages of about 2.3% or less without any apparent change in the structure of 3CaO·Al₂O₃. X-ray diffraction peaks in the back-reflection region shifted to lower d-spacing values on increasing Na₂O contents.

Capillary pressure curves were determined for six cores by this technique and were compared to the curves for the same cores determined by the semi-permeable barrier technique. The technique differs from previously reported centrifuge techniques in that the centrifuge was slowly accelerated from zero to the maximum desired speed, rather than being held constant at particular, progressively higher speeds. Overlooked in particular has been the development of an easily understood and easily applied method of estimating the costs of the drilling and blasting operations involved in a highway through-cut excavation in rock.
