The problem in this investigation is to determine the characteristics of lower status Negro mothers and their families and to determine whether specific characteristics are associated with the utilization or acceptance of traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes. More specifically, this investigation will attempt to determine what cognate relationships prevail in the various segments of lower status Negro mothers with respect to their exhibiting traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes and their relative social status position, family composition, and mother's social contact frequency.

This study is a direct result of the investigator's three-year exposure to the problems of selection and placement under the Manpower Development and Training Act (MDTA). From July 1962 until June 1965 the investigator was employed as a Personnel Methods Technician for the Michigan Employment Security Commission in Muskegon, Michigan. In this capacity he wrote the initial proposals for Muskegon's MDTA programs during this period. He also implemented the selection of trainees and the placement of graduates for each of twenty MDTA programs. "The Terzaghi theory of consolidation and the assumption of his theory, pore pressure and effective stress, secondary compression and rheology were all reviewed and discussed. Eight compacted unsaturated samples made from Clarksville silty clay (CL) under different compaction efforts and moisture contents were subjected to consolidation load increments. Each load increment was maintained for 24 hours. An extra compacted sample was loaded for one month to investigate secondary compression.

From e-p curves, five settlement vs. compacted embankment height curves were derived for different compaction effort and moisture contents. These curves may be of practical use, when checked by field measurements …

"Integral equations for the isotropic and anisotropic ray path of a radio wave propagating through the ionosphere are developed. These equations assume a spherically stratisfied ionosphere and are equivalent to a detailed ray-tracing process. A method is devised to utilize these equations in the evaluation of combined Faraday rotation and dispersive Doppler data from earth satellites for subionospheric electron content. "A microinterferometric method was used to study the effect of solute concentration on the diffusion coefficient in polymer solutions and also to determine the effect of polymer concentration on the diffusion coefficient. The polyacrylonitrile-dimethylformamide system was used as a means of determining the accuracy of the experimental apparatus and procedure. The non-ionic, water soluble polymer, hydroxyethyl cellulose (commercially known as Natrosol), was used to study this effect with urea and D-glucose as the solutes.

The results obtained for the polyacrylonitrile-dimethylformamide system were in close agreement with the results obtained by Secor, which meant that the experimental technique is accurate enough …

It is inherent in the method that the transform function Y*(s) is rational. "The purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanism of the anodic oxidation of maleic acid on platinized-platinum electrodes at 80⁰C. Current density-potential studies were conducted varying the parameters of maleic acid concentration and pH. The faradaic efficiency of the oxidation of maleic acid to yield CO₂ was determined. The effect of temperature on current density was also studied to determine the activation energy for the reaction. The oxidation of maleic acid occurred only in acidic solutions. The effect of small additions (10^-4 and 10^-5 N) of Cl^-, SO₄⁼, and CrO₄⁼ on the apparent valence and dissolution potential was also studied. Current densities were varied from 0.00 to 0.07 amp·cm^-2.

The foils and the elements which constituted the foils were selected by the following criteria: availability of adequate cross-section data, energy dependence of the given reaction, gamma radiation emitted during decay and the half-life of the daughter. "Morphology and internal structures of surface features of the Mare Humorum area were interpreted from photographs and topographic maps. The postulated origin of certain features is based on analog comparisons with known terrestrial features. The laws of crate ring and a newly developed computer program were applied to two representative classes of craters to determine the possibility of a meteoritic impact origin. Some of the craters formed by meteoritic impact and others, including those with a radius larger than 10 Km, probably resulted from volcanic activity.

"Shell molds containing additions of ten to fifty percent magnetite, Fe₃O₄, of various particle sizes were cured by induction heating. For comparison, regular shell molds were made using silica and zircon sand. Low carbon steel was cast into all of the molds.

Castings produced from the regular shell molds exhibited poor surfaces due to mold expansion. Magnetite additions eliminated the expansion defects from the casting surfaces.
