"This thesis stresses the importance of analog and digital computers in the field of reaction kinetics. The analog computer is used to simulate a chemical reaction, the hydrolysis of acetic anhydride. The hydrolysis reaction takes place in a tubular reactor. The reactor is 3/4 inch in diameter and 20 feet long. These reactor dimensions allow the reaction system to approach plug flow, if the reactants flow through the reactor at turbulent flow rates. The physical, reactor, system is used to obtain experimental data for the hydrolysis reaction. The data is obtained at reactor temperatures between 75 and 100°F. Feed concentrations …

"The deformation of refractory materials consisting of 90% sintered or fused alumina plus 10% silica was measured at temperatures from 1450 to 1515⁰C and a compressive stress of 100 psi. Creep rates and activation energies were determined from the steady state portion of deformation vs. time data and correlated with the mineralogical composition. Supplemental measurements included x-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, apparent porosity and tensile strength. conditions having an important effect upon the mineralolgical composition were: (1) duration of heat treatment, (2) amount of sodium oxide impurity, and (3) reactivity of the alumina grain. "The paragenesis of minerals occurring in the bedding-replacement fluorspar ores in the Crystal, Minerva No. 1 and Hill mines in the Cave-in-Rock district, Hardin County, Illinois, has been studied by underground, binocular, petrographic and ore microscopic examination. More than 300 hand specimens were collected from the mines, 100 thin sections were prepared and 36 polished surfaces were examined to prepare paragenetic diagrams for the Crystal and Minerva No. 1 mines.

The minerals determined in the fluorspar ores were: fluorite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, pyrite, marcasite, calcite, strontianite, witherite, barite, quartz, dolomite, oil and bitumen. Most of these minerals are present both …

"The pyrite-pyrrhotite belt is a northeast-southwest trending area about 35 miles long and three to four miles wide located in Jefferson and western St. Lawrence counties, New York, within the metamorphosed Grenville Lowland just northwest of the Adirondack massif.

Outcropping within this belt are a number of thin discontinuous quartz-biotite-oligoclase gneisses with an unusually high graphite, chlorite, and pyrite content, known as "rusty gneisses." Sulfides are concentrated in these gneisses into zones of up to 50% or more pyrite. The pyrite is granular or crystalline and is invariably accompanied by large amounts of chlorite and graphite and local minor segregations …

"The petrofabrics of the host gneiss silicates and Ovate ore grains were studied in thin sections of oriented specimens collected from widely scattered positions in the iron ore deposit at Benson Mines, New York.

Ten oriented specimens selected for petrofabrics study were comprised primarily of feldspar, quartz, garnet and ores, with lesser quantities of biotite and sillimanite. Petrofabric diagrams were prepared for the orientation fabrics of magnetite and biotite in eight of the ten specimens, but sillimanite and quartz were sufficiently abundant for fabric determination in only three specimens. "The purpose of this thesis is to provide a suitable basis for comparing the relative advantages of the friction and drum hoists under various conditions of operation.

Such comparisons are mainly and necessarily based upon physical characteristics of the mechanisms for lack of appropriate economic data. It is believed, however, that this inadequacy may be alleviated to some extent by substituting comparative theoretical energy requirements of' the two hoisting systems under identical duty conditions over a practical range of mining situations involving various depths and daily productions.

Religious behavior is multi-dimensional in nature, with several qualitatively distinct dimensions. Hypothesized relations between different dimensions of religious behavior and inner/other-direction, together with the assumed shift from inner-direction to other-direction, have been formulated to explain the now familiar, but nevertheless controversial, religious revival in American society. The Department of Defense (DOD) program budget was developed to link defense planning to defense spending. The budget is designed to reflect total program costs. Military managers require such costs in order to make optimum allocation of resources. The program budget has been a useful tool in bringing uniformity to military plans but its effectiveness, the author contends, has been limited because it contains inaccurate cost data.

The author intends to prove that incorrect financial information is included in the budget because some resource expenditures cannot be accurately traced. The same resource is "common" to several different weapon systems. …

This paper describes an investigation intended to: 1. observe the effect of electrolyte concentration on the stability of kaolin-water systems, 2. evaluate the relative sediment volume measurement as a tool for determining the stability of such systems, 3. assess the applicability of the Verwey-Overbeek theory of stability of lyophobic colloids for predicting the observed effects, and 4. determine if any correlation exists between the effects predicted by the theory and observed through the relative sediment volume measurement.

In a recent study of the ultraviolet spectra of substituted hydrazones, it was concluded that a sterio effect existed in tetrasubstituted hydrazones that significantly hindered complete rotation about the nitrogen-nitrogen bond. Weber¹⁶ noted that di- and tri-substituted hydrazones exhibited similar spectra with three strong absorption bands at approximately 235, 300, and 340 mu. In acid solutions, the spectra of these compounds showed a marked decrease in intensity of the long wavelength band. It has been postulated that this change was a consequence of the protonation of the non-bonding electron-pair on the amino nitrogen atom, and thus correlated the …
