Throughout history man has relied heavily on plant-derived materials in the production of paintings. Plant products have been used to fulfill each of the material requirements of painting. The ground or surface upon which an artist applies paint -is usually of plant origin, such as woven fabrics and paper. The ancient Egyptians painted on canvas (from Linum usitatissimum L.), papyrus, (from Cyperus papyrus L.), and wood (Lucas, 1934:149-150, 201-203; Laurie, 1910:17, 31-32).

Laryngectomy, the surgical removal of the larynx, is performed to save life threatened by a carcinomatous condition of the larynx. This surgical procedure is also performed when necessitated by accident, injury or other pathologies of the larynx. (35).

There are living, in the United States, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 individuals who have undergone surgical removal of the larynx due to the carcinomatous condition of that organ (33). "The rapid increase in radioisotope applications necessitates improved technology for separation and purification of the fission product elements. Electrodialysis techniques employing Permutit anion exchange membrane(3148) were used to separate technetium from zirconium. The method was based upon the stability of the pertechnetate ion in alkaline solutions and the precipitation of zirconium from alkaline solutions. The separation of radiotechnetium and radiozirconium was effected with a two cell electrodialysis unit employing an anion exchange membrane. It was felt that if a sufficient difference in distribution of volatiles was detected, a correlation between particle size and activity of the sea coal within the test specimens might be established.
