Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracing In A Karst Terrain, James William Scanlan
Evaluation And Application Of Dye Tracing In A Karst Terrain, James William Scanlan
Masters Theses
"The purpose of this investigation was to select and evaluate in the laboratory a tracing method appropriate for use in karstic areas, and to perform field tracing studies in the south central Missouri area bounded by the cities of Rolla, St. James, and Salem in an attempt to establish existing direct flow connections between surface and subsurface waters. Fluorescein (sodium salt), Rhodamine WT, and Rhodamine B were evaluated as tracers in the laboratory and the first two dyes were employed in the field. After careful evaluation of a number of adsorbents, extracting solvents, and detection techniques, a method consisting of …
Determination Of Molecular Diffusivities In Liquids, Pai-Chuan Wu
Determination Of Molecular Diffusivities In Liquids, Pai-Chuan Wu
Masters Theses
"A porous plate, initially at a uniform solute concentration is immersed in a well-stirred pure solvent bath of known volume. It is desired to find the molecular diffusivity of the solute-solvent system by observing the change of the solute concentration in the solvent bath with time. In this study, concentration-time data were curve-fitted by non-linear, least squares techniques to the various mathematical solutions describing molecular diffusion in the porous frit. This technique is used to determine the diffusion coefficient and predict the value of other parameters existing in the different mathematical diffusion models. The results from the different models are …
A Computer Adaption Of Plastic Analysis For Rigid Frames, Gerald Duane Galloway
A Computer Adaption Of Plastic Analysis For Rigid Frames, Gerald Duane Galloway
Masters Theses
"A computer program for the plastic analysis of rigid frames is presented. The program is based on the virtual work method of plastic analysis. The great number of failure mechanisms that must be considered in any virtual work analysis are given in Appendix C. The use of the program as a design aid is also discussed. A check for the virtual work program is also presented. The check is based on the method of inequalities as initially presented by Symonds and Neal"--Abstract, page ii.
Numerical Integration Of Shell Equations Using The Field Method, Pravin R. Ghael
Numerical Integration Of Shell Equations Using The Field Method, Pravin R. Ghael
Masters Theses
"In this work field equations are introduced to numerically solve the six linear differential equations which determine the displacements and stress resultants for thin elastic shells with axially symmetric loadings. With the applications of the field equations to the analysis of symmetric shells, the two-point boundary-value problem is formulated in terms of twelve first-order ordinary differential equations with boundary conditions at only one point. These equations are solved by using a forth [sic]-order Runge_kutta integration formula. Three problems whose solutions are known have been evaluated to check the accuracy of the field equation method. These are: (1.) Simply-supported, thin circular …
The Density Of Horizontal Control In Missouri, Norman Lee Brown
The Density Of Horizontal Control In Missouri, Norman Lee Brown
Masters Theses
"In 1965 the Missouri Legislature passed House Bill 201 adopting the Missouri Plane Coordinate System as computed by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. The requirements of this law and the density and distribution of usable control within the state is the topic of this thesis"--Abstract, page ii.
An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig
An Analysis Of Dirac Delta Generated Spherical Waves In An Infinite Maxwell Medium, William F. Breig
Masters Theses
"It is an accepted fact that the simple Maxwell and Voigt models do not usually represent the behavior of real materials. In order to make the results of a model more realistic, other combinations of springs and dashpots must be considered. To understand the more complicated models, it is desirable to have a knowledge of the Maxwell model since this element usually occurs either in series or in parallel in the advanced models. This investigation reports solutions of the spherical wave equation in both the elastic and viscoelastic media. Laplace transform techniques are used to obtain the parameters; stress, velocity, …

The Problem
Introduction
The importance of work to an individual in society is documented by a number of authorities who stress the idea that the average male adult spends more time in his occupation than in any other activity. Before an individual becomes involved in the world of work, he must make decisions regarding the occupation he expects to follow. This type of decision-making has been defined as "... a process which takes place over a period of time and which is best explained by a combination of determinants which themselves interact, are modified and developed with time." (Super, 1957). …

Slavery In Colonial Massachusetts, Thomas A. Malloy Iii
Slavery In Colonial Massachusetts, Thomas A. Malloy Iii
Masters Theses
1. Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to trace the history of slavery in colonial Massachusetts. Massachusetts was by no means an originator of this institution, for the practice of slavery predates written history. Its origins probably stem from wars of conquest in which captives were used for sacrificial purposes, but as prehistoric man adopted a settled way of life, he found it practical to spare his captives' lives and enslave them. The conqueror's justification for enslavement of his captives was that he had spared their lives, and thus they were at his disposal. In a sense, one could …
