"The occurrence of sulfide minerals and their textural relationships to the silicate and oxide minerals in the Benson Mines, New York, iron deposit were investigated by ore microscopic and petrographic means. The Benson deposit is one in which the dominant iron oxides, magnetite and hematite, occur in a quartz-feldspar gneiss which was subjected to hornblende granulite subfacies metamorphism. Two hundred ore and country rock specimens were systematically collected from all parts of the open pit mine. Polished sections and thin sections were prepared from nearly all of the collected specimens. The oxide ore exhibits a granular texture in which isolated …

"In this research the interaction of nickel ions with the surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate at the liquid-air interface was studied. Surface tension measurements were performed on pure sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions, with and without the addition of nickel ions. Results of these measurements showed that the addition of nickel ions lowered the equilibrium surface tension values of pure sodium dodecyl sulfate solutions and shifted the critical micelle concentration to lower concentrations. The foam fractionation technique was used to determine if the nickel ions could be removed from surfactant solutions. It was found that the removal of nickel ions was influenced …

"In the following report, some of the properties of ALCOA 7075 T651 aluminum, when subjected to high rates of loading, are experimentally investigated by impacting two rods of the material longitudinally. One rod is accelerated to a uniform velocity with an air gun launcher. The stationary second rod is instrumented with strain gages on its lateral surface in order to determine the strain-time history following impact. A detailed description of the experimental equipment is included. Simple, one-dimensional theory is used to determine the dynamic, elastic modulus of the test material under the impact condition. "A study was conducted to determine the behavior of swirling air flow in a converging nozzle. Special instrumentation was constructed to obtain radial traverses of the flow at four axial positions. the data collected consisted of velocity, static pressure, and stagnation temperature. The flow pattern demonstrated the Ranque-Hilsh effect and reversed axial flow in the core region. As the flow entered the nozzle, it had the characteristics of a free vortex. At the exit plane the characteristics were those of a forced vortex. The converging nozzle caused an increase in the magnitude of the axial velocity component"--Abstract, page ii.

"The microstructure and mineralogical composition of direct bonded, 50 wt.% magnesia - 50 wt.% chrome ore refractory compositions containing controlled additions of silica were correlated with their compressive creep behavior in the temperature range 1450⁰ to 1550⁰C under stresses of 100 to 175 psi. Steady state creep rates were determined from the linear regression of the steady state regions of deformation on time. Apparent activation energies and deformation flow characteristics were determined from the temperature and stress dependence of the steady state creep rates. Silica contents up to 3.5 wt.% increased the amount of direct intergranular bonding which decreased the …

"Knowledge of the effects of prolonged states of weightlessness on the physiological activities of gastric motility and acid secretion will aid in the planning of future space flights, since aberrations in these activities could affect the performance of astronauts. Investigation of these activities requires monitoring of the pressure and pH in the stomach and titration of the gastric contents. "Resistivity measurements were made of ordered, disordered and intermediate states of order-disordered specimens of Fe₃Al while being irradiated by neutrons. All the specimens were irradiated at ambient temperature, approximately 35°C in a modified Bulk Shielding Swimming Pool type reactor. The ordered and near ordered specimens increased in resistivity indicating disordering whereas the disordered and near disordered specimens decreased in resistivity indicating an ordering process was occuring [sic]. By extrapolation, an equilibrium condition was determined and estimated at 130-135 micro-ohms-cm resistivity that would remain constant during irradiation because the ordering and disordering affects of neutron irradiation would be in equilibrium"--Abstract, page …

"Experiments have been conducted to investigate the resistance and the effect of the directional heat flow at the interface of metals in contact. The test specimens were cylinders, axially aligned and dead weight loaded. Specimen materials were aluminum, bronze, and steel. The tests were conducted at environment pressures of 5x10⁻⁵ Torr. or less. The dead weight load was kept at 10 lbs. for all tests and the surface roughness for all specimens was from 6 to 8x10⁻⁶ inch. "A well characterized, variable plate separation ion chamber was utilized as a detector to collect x-ray attenuation data for generating information on the Laplace transform predicted spectrum of a 50 KvCP conventional x-ray tube. The variable plate separation feature allows one to include a wavelength dependent correction to the detector response which is associated with the hardening of the x-ray spectrum as it traverses the attenuating material. With this correction, the conventional two-term Laplace transform was shown to approximate independently the bremsstrahlung and characteristic L radiation from the tungsten target. "A method has been developed for study and evaluation of overburden removal systems in open pit mining. The computer simulation method shows the effect of vehicle and course characteristics and the control of loading time on overall production and cost per unit of overburden removed. Data are available from vehicle manufacturers and from past mining experience. The data are punched onto processing cards and the system is then simulated and analyzed using a digital computer. "The continued expansion of the nuclear reactor facility and the nuclear engineering program dictates the need that a liquid nitrogen cooled cryostat be available at the reactor. This unit would be available for use in graduate and undergraduate laboratories and for graduate research. A liquid nitrogen cooled cryostat capable of maintaining a sample between 77°K to 80°K for an extended period of time in or adjacent to the core of the reactor was designed, constructed, and successfully operated. "The lateral variation and nature of carbonate host rock in the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district were petrographically studied within the McGregor and Quimbys Mill Members of the Platteville Formation of the Middle Ordovician System. These members are dolomitic limestone in the Upper Mississippi Valley district of southwestern Wisconsin, northwestern Illinois and northeastern Iowa. One hundred and twenty-seven specimens were collected or were available from pull drifts in the Shullsburg mine. The specimens were collected at regular intervals of 50 or lOO feet in seven pull drifts between eight ore bodies. Thin sections prepared from the carbonate specimens were studied, …
