Kinetic Studies Of The Cell Elongation Phenomenon In Etiolated Pisum Stem Segments, Grant M. Barkley

The short-term growth response of etiolated pea stem segments (Pisum sativum L., var. Alaska) was investigated using a high-resolution growth recording device. The immediate effect of treatment with indoleacetic acid (IAA) is an inhibition of growth. This inhibition lasts about 10 minutes and then the rate of elongation rises abruptly to a new steady rate about 4 times the rate of elongation before auxin treatment. This rapid steady rate of elongation, however, continues for only about 22 minutes before declining suddenly to a lower steady rate of growth about 2 times the rate of elongation before the addition of auxin. …

"Statistical interpretation of geochemical data was used to determine the environment of deposition of the Maquoketa Formation in Pike County, Missouri. A cyclic sequence was noted which can be best explained by cyclic climatic changes. During the study it was found that elemental relationships which would be expected in a freshly deposited sediment can be found in core samples. In samples from outcrops and quarry faces these relationships have been destroyed. As these elemental relationships reflect mineralogical relationships, serious doubts have arisen as to the validity of petrographic studies of samples taken from outcrops. The objective of this investigation was to determine the origin of the oxygen atom incorporated into indoleacetic acid (IAA) by the IAA oxidase of Hygrophorous conicus through the use of oxygen-18. "The waste water from the Fletcher Mine of the St. Joseph Lead Company was producing large algal growths in Bee Fork Creek. A field and laboratory study was conducted to determine the characteristics of the waste, find a method of determining the pollutional materials contained in the waste, study the undesirable algal growths, and develop and evaluate a practical, inexpensive, and effective pollution abatement method. "The continuous discharge of lead-zinc mine and mill wastewater into some streams in southeastern Missouri may alter the ecology of those streams. A field and laboratory study was conducted to evaluate the potential pollution problem. Bee Fork Creek, the first stream in that area to receive tailings from mining operations, was selected for this study and periodically surveyed. Laboratory tests included static bioassays of lead, zinc, and copper, and the mode of action of the metals was investigated through post-mortem examination of the experimental fish. "This thesis describes the sorption and desorption of chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides by clay minerals under laboratory controlled environmental systems. Particular emphasis was directed toward the investigation of the fundamental adsorption phenomena which occurred in selected pesticide-clay systems. the effects of certain environmental stresses, including pH, temperature and salt (NaCl) concentration of water, on the behavior of sorption and desorption were also studied. Pesticides selected for this study included DDT, dieldrin and heptachlor, and clay minerals employed were kaolinite, montmorillonite and illite. Researchers and scholars in the fear appeal area have been unable to determine what factor or factors make fear appeals effective. Two studies, Hewgill and Miller (1965) and Powell (1965), suggest that the personal involvement of the audience with who or what is threatened is the factor which causes fear appeals to be effective. If ego-involvement is the personal involvement factor indicated by these studies, then it would appear to be the key to fear appeal effectiveness. Therefore, the present investigation was designed to experimentally compare the effects of ego-involvement and fear appeals upon task performance.
