Earlier studies using both mice and rats have revealed a significant, positive correlation between preference of alcohol concentration and activity of the liver enzyme, alcohol dehydrogenase. In this study two groups of Sprague- Dawley rats, matched for sex, were presented alcohol by either a choice or forced condition for three twelve day periods in a choice-forced-choice or forced-choice-forced sequence. Data were recorded as the amount of alcohol - consumed under each consumption condition. After the rats were sacrificed, their livers were removed and assays were made for the alcohol dehydrogenase activity. Production of frass (insect fecal material) was determined for five slightly different oak forest habitats in Allegan State Game Area, Allegan County, Michigan, for the 1968 growing season. Frass samples were collected on 30 or more 9X9 inch collecting surfaces in each of the study areas. It was found that 1.66 grams or 87.36 square inches of white oak leaf consumed was the equivalent of one gram of frass produced. This was determined from five muslin bags enclosing white oak branches and containing fifteen assorted insect larvae from four species believed to be responsible for most of the frass production …

"This study was conducted to determine the fate of chemically-precipitated phosphorus during the overall wastewater treatment process under actual field conditions. Specific objectives were: to evaluate the removal of phosphorus with alum and sodium aluminate in a pilot plant activated sludge system, to determine the fate of the precipitated phosphorus incorporated into the microbial floc when placed in an anaerobic environment, and to observe the effect of aluminum on the digestion process. "As ground water becomes increasingly important as a source of water in the United States, reliable information on the hydrological characteristics of carbonate aquifers must be obtained in order to develop them intelligently. Various tracers have been used in the past to determine if two or more points are connected hydrologically. Today there exists a number of excellent dye tracers and tracer methods have been developed in unconsolidated and clastic aquifers for determining hydrological characteristics. "This thesis describes the laboratory evaluation of the benthal sludge oxygen uptake of a 6.7 acre waste stabilization pond which has served a city of 2,400 population for a period of seven years. Special emphasis is directed toward the explanation of laboratory techniques developed for this study to measure the oxygen uptake rate. The effects on oxygen consumption of temperature, nature of sludge, initial oxygen tension, and sludge consolidation are discussed. Benthal sludge samples were taken from three locations in the pond. Oxygen consumption studies were conducted in a specially designed plastic cylinder which included a novel magnetic mixing system. …

"The objective of this investigation was to evaluate the use of batch type solvent extraction and freeze concentration in recovering trace organic pollutants from water. The work was performed using a simplified water system containing known concentrations of phenol, and natural water systems collected from three sources (Meramec Spring, Gasconade River near Jerome, and Missouri River in Jefferson City) with different levels of pollution. "Wastewater stabilization lagoons have recently become a popular and efficient method of sewage stabilization in many parts of the country. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of added solid-liquid interfacial area on the treatment capabilities of simulated wastewater stabilization lagoons. The simulated lagoons consisted of six -15 gallon aquariums which were operated in the laboratory. The solid-liquid interfacial area was increased in four of these lagoons by suspending plastic panels in the aquariums. "The purpose of this investigation was to study the removal of phosphorus from waste water by sorption on activated alumina, and determine the capacity of the alumina to sorb phosphates in the presence of other ions, the effect of the influent flow rate and phosphorus concentration on the efficiency of the process, and the feasibility of regeneration of the used alumina. "A field and laboratory investigation was carried out to collect background data for stream water quality in the New Lead Belt of Southeastern Missouri. The parameters measured were temperature, hydrogen ion concentration, hardness, alkalinity, turbidity and fluorides. A prolific algal and microbial growth was found in Bee Fork Creek which receives the mining and milling wastewater effluent from the Fletcher Mine. The laboratory studies were conducted to examine the biological effects of the organic flotation reagents used in the mining operations. "The electronic structure of benz(a)anthracene based on the sigma and pi electrons was predicted by the modified intermediate neglect of differential overlap (MINDO) molecular orbital method and compared with the pi electronic structure determined by the Pople method. The crystalline molecular structure was used for both methods. The Pople calculation was also done on the aromatic molecular structure and a combination structure which assumed the bond lengths of the crystal structure and the bond angles of the aromatic structure. Chemical properties predicted by the MINDO and POPLE electronic structures were compared; the MINDO results provided the best agreement with experimental …

"Filled sinkholes have long been known to occur in the carbonate rocks of Missouri. A sandstone unit occurs in these sinkholes at their outer margin, forming a rim, and is called here the rimrock sandstone. Samples of rimrock sandstone, from an area northeast of Rolla, Missouri were studied. Grain size, heavy mineral and. thin section analyses of these samples were carried out. Size analysis data suggest that, texturally, the rimrock sandstone is similar to the St. Peter sandstone and that this formation could have supplied sands for the formation of rimrock.
