There have been many causes for underachievement. These varied with the school, the type of instruction, the teacher, the classroom, the home background, and the student, but many causes were basically the same regardless of the situation or student involved.

Statement of the problem. This study was undertaken to find information that might reveal the possible causes of underachievement in the eighth grade of large urban high school for the year 1962-1963.

Early secondary schools were relatively small and made few demands on the principal's time. With the growth of the schools the responsibilities of the principal have grown proportionately. As these responsibilities increased, it became necessary for him to share these duties with an assistant. This assistant began taking over routine activities mostly those of a clerical nature. As the schools continued to grow he began assuming duties in the realm of supervision and administration. To be effective he needed to be as dedicated, as perceptive and as well trained as the principal himself.

This thesis is concerned with the design and preparation of certain organic compounds which are expected to have medicinal properties. A discussion will be given which has essentially a two-fold purpose. During the last decade increasing attention has been paid to the effects of the perceptual variables in the environment of an organism upon the behavior of that organism. The importance of deprivation of exteroceptive stimulation is shown by the study of Bexton, Heron, and Scott (1954). Human Ss were placed in an isolated cubicle and wore equipment restricting visual and tactual stimulation. The Ss reactions included hallucinations, deterioration of intellectual abilities, and inability to tolerate the treatment for extended periods.

Eighteenth-century Virginia was strikingly agrarian. Tobacco planting on the plantations and farms created an ever-increasing need for new land. The growth of a dispersed rural society reacted against the formation of urban focal units and a middle class. This society did create, because of the endemic loneliness of the country, a people who desired companionship and proved to be gregarious and convivial.

It was the purpose of this study to find facts relating to the history of guidance in Virginia public high schools and to organize the facts into a comprehensive history of guidance in Virginia public high schools. The intent of the writer was to trace developmental trends in the concepts and practices of guidance in the State of Virginia. Survey results were used only to indicate these trends, and no attempt was made to discuss or evaluate guidance services in individual schools.

A Study Of The Infrared Spectra Of A Group Of Hydroxyalkylamine Hydrochlorides, Lawrence Ingram Briel

The infrared spectra ot twenty amine bydroohlorides were obtained with the Perkin-Elmer Model 21 recording spectrophotometer. The positions of the absorption bands were compared with literature values for pertinent structural group frequencies. A system of coding the spectral data was devised so that an IBM 1620 digital computer could make the comparisons for a large number of' group frequencies. Good agreement was observed between the positions of the absorption bands in the experimental spectra and those of pertinent group frequencies reported in the literature.

Pilobolus umbonatus Buller and P. crystallinus Tode grew normally in a nitrogen atmosphere but their sporagnia were non-pigmented. When palced in anaerobic jars along with obligately anaerobic and obligately aerobic bacteria, the fungi grew in the range of oxygen concentrations too low for growth of the aerobic bacterium, but high enough to prevent growth of the anaerobe. The fungi did not grow when the oxygen was depleted to the point that allowed growth of the anaerobic bacterium. Catalase was not produced by the hyphae and trophocysts which normally grow beneath the surface of the medium, but was present in the …

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the principal media of exchange used in Virginia during the Colonial period, showing why these media were used and how adequately or inadequately they performed the function of money. In order to understand the similarities or areas of agreement between Milton's theology and that of the Arminians one not only has to understand thoroughly the five Arminian articles but also must be familiar with the theologies which produced them. [I] will attempt to show why a few scholars and theologians refer to Milton's Christine Doctrine and Paradise Lost as being Arminian by simply comparing the two theologies and pointing out the areas of definite agreement between them.
