Objective: The objective of this pilot study was to utilize metabolomics profiling to conduct a broad, exploratory assessment of differences in plasma metabolites associated with low VA status versus adequacy in lactating women.
Methods: Plasma samples from lactating women who participated in a survey in Samar, Philippines, were selected from a cross-sectional study based on plasma retinol concentrations indicating …
Demographic Predictors Of Math Anxiety In Elementary School Children, Melissa Flowerdew
Demographic Predictors Of Math Anxiety In Elementary School Children, Melissa Flowerdew
Master's Theses
Due to the increasing interest of math anxiety in elementary level children, the present study explored math anxiety contextual factors through Bandura’s (1999) Social Cognitive perspective. Using the Children’s Anxiety in Math Scale, researchers gathered data from 40 primary-level children to explore four demographic predictors--grade-level, special needs identification, gender identity, and socioeconomic status-- of mathematics anxiety through a hierarchical regression model. Findings indicated demographic variables accounted for over one-third of the variance in math anxiety scores at 38.2% (grade level: 12.3%, SNI: 8.4%, gender identity: 13.2%, SES: 4.1%). With the exception of socioeconomic status, all predictors were significant. These findings …
Long Term Recovery From Cattle Grazing Disturbance And Climate Impacts At Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Erin Tessens
Long Term Recovery From Cattle Grazing Disturbance And Climate Impacts At Capitol Reef National Park, Utah, Erin Tessens
Master's Theses
Cattle grazing has influenced the environment in the western United States since European settlement in the 1800’s. Continuous and heavy grazing on arid and semi-arid rangelands has resulted in decreased biodiversity, changes in vegetation structure, and vulnerability to exotic plant invasion. Heavy grazing has also been linked to decreased cryptobiotic soil due to trampling and susceptibility to erosion. With a lack of effective means of successful habitat restoration, there is a rising concern among land managers to maintain these intricate systems, notably under the threat of climate change. Consequently, there is a critical need to understand these system’s response to …
Noninvasive Measurement Of Arterial Compliance With A Blood Pressure Cuff Using A Surrogate Arm Bench Top Model For Oscillometric Use, Shane Wilsey
Master's Theses
A surrogate arm model was created that is capable of being used for oscillometry. This model is capable of being used as a bench top model for blood pressure cuff devices. The arm consists of endplates and internal supports that are 3D printed with ABS, a silicone rubber outer sleeve, and interchangeable arteries made from two silicone rubber strips glued together at the edges. The interchangeable arteries have varying compliances that can be used as different inputs for oscillometric testing. A process was established to measure the artery compliances with a curve fit correlation of 0.95. However, testing revealed that …
Comparison Of Two Advanced Oxidation Processes For Their Production Of Hydroxyl Radicals And Evaluation Of A Uv/Ozone Aop At Varying Uv Fluence For Treating Diclofenac, Alexandra Cass
Master's Theses
This study explores the efficacy of two advanced oxidation processes for generation of hydroxyl radicals to promote degradation of emerging contaminants. Drought and water shortage have become pressing issues caused by our world’s changing climate. Water reclamation and reuse are increasingly important options for relieving this water stress. Water reuse runs the risk of reintroducing recalcitrant compounds that can accumulate in our bodies and environment. Advanced treatment methods that degrade these compounds are vital to protect our health and the health of the environment while providing necessary water resources. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown great promise for removing recalcitrant …

Hook-Billed Kite, Chondrohierax Uncinatus, Southbound Autumn Migration In Belize And Mexico, Ryan Anthony Phillips
Master's Theses
The Hook-billed Kite (Chondrohierax uncinatus) is a specialized Neotropical raptor with a wide distribution that has received little research attention. The species is considered non-migratory across most of its distribution, but there are scattered records of Hook-billed Kite migration. The present research describes, for the first time, the largest southbound autumn migration of Hook-billed Kite in Belize and Mexico and evaluates the effects of environmental conditions on this phenomenon. Eight years of count data were collected in Belize and 25 years in Mexico. During a total of 3093.1 count hr from 2013-2020 in Belize, 39928 Hook-billed Kites were counted on …
Distribution And Habitat Use Of The Santa Clara County Population Of Red-Bellied Newts (Taricha Rivularis), Joie De Leon
Distribution And Habitat Use Of The Santa Clara County Population Of Red-Bellied Newts (Taricha Rivularis), Joie De Leon
Master's Theses
Anthropogenically-induced habitat loss and degradation have increased extinction rates in amphibians worldwide, yet little is known about many remaining populations. A disjunct population of red-bellied newt (Taricha rivularis), an endemic California species, was discovered 130 km south of its previously known range. Here I document the range and breeding phenology of this population and contrast its mesohabitat use with that of other sympatric newts. Surveys across two years suggest that the southern population of T. rivularis is confined to a 1 km segment of Stevens Creek, and the population follows an early-March to late-April migratory breeding pattern, similar to one …
Humpback Whale, Megaptera Novaeangliae, Feeding Dynamics From The Perspective Of The Individual: Insights From Demography, Life History, And Bio-Logging, Jennifer Tackaberry
Humpback Whale, Megaptera Novaeangliae, Feeding Dynamics From The Perspective Of The Individual: Insights From Demography, Life History, And Bio-Logging, Jennifer Tackaberry
Master's Theses
Studies of fission-fusion societies provide a framework in which to compare the feeding dynamics across demographics, unrestrained by stable associations or relatedness. This study used bio-logger data and surface observations combined with long-term population data from the Gulf of Maine humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae, population to investigate the influence of demographics on feeding methods, and time spent feeding, and to determine if a coordinated feeding method, kick-feeding, was a cooperative behavior. The results suggest that demographics did influence the feeding method used and highlighted the need to determine how energetic needs change across the feeding season. Adult females did not …

Changes In Allochronic Breeding Populations Of Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha) Of Prince William Sound, Alaska, Claire Dormody
Master's Theses
Prince William Sound, Alaska is home to one of the largest pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) fisheries in the world. Salmon populations there have been fished commercially for over a century, and the State’s documentation of commercial fishing provides a valuable dataset in order to examine abundance trends of species in this region. For this thesis research, I analyzed the fluctuations in abundance and isolated even year and odd year breeding populations of pink salmon to assess whether there is a numerical discrepancy between pink salmon that spawn in odd years and the population that spawns in even years. Analysis of …
Urban Agroecology For Food Sovereignty And Biodiversity: Are Urban Community Farms Or Gardens More Effective?, Heidi L. Giancola
Urban Agroecology For Food Sovereignty And Biodiversity: Are Urban Community Farms Or Gardens More Effective?, Heidi L. Giancola
Master's Theses
Industrial agriculture is accurately criticized for eliminating biodiversity and destroying food sovereignty. Urban agroecosystems, usually individual plots in community gardens, are promoted to restore ecological services and equity to food systems. Recently, collectively tended urban community farms have developed, with explicit social justice goals. This study directly contrasts the effectiveness of the urban community farm and garden models. Spatial analysis is used to confirm that community farms enhance geographic access for healthy food priority areas compared to gardens in the San Francisco bay area. An online survey of farm staff and gardeners from Marin to Santa Clara County resulted in …

Epiphyte-Host Dynamics Between Pyropia And Nereocystis In Central California, Daniel Joseph Gossard
Master's Theses
Macroalgal epiphytism is widespread, but many unique epiphyte-host interactions remain poorly understood. Pyropia nereocystis is an annual northeastern Pacific species that has evolved to primarily epiphytize the annual kelp Nereocystis luetkeana. I examined three aspects of Pyropia-Nereocystis epiphyte-host dynamics in the southern extent of the host’s range: (1) temporal variation in epiphtyte presence; (2) growth of gametophyte and sporophyte (conchocelis) stages using transplantation experiments; and (3) effects of epiphyte depth and host characteristics on the recruitment and biomass of the epiphyte. Pyropia exhibited a shift in presence on Nereocystis that differed interannually as a function of Nereocystis density and Nereocystis …

Versatile Disubstituted Imidazole Ligands For Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling Under Mild Conditions, Daniel Parker
Master's Theses
Synthesis of small molecules for medicine, agriculture, or research often requires the formation of carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatoms bonds, and palladium catalyzed reactions have emerged as a potent technique for these cross-coupling reactions. To address increasing catalysts demands, our research has focused on the development of a versatile catalyst platform bearing imidazole pendants as ligands to support cross-coupling reactions under mild conditions, an area of current interest. A series of bridged imidazole ligands was synthesized using a modular approach and characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of the complexes was measured for cross-coupling reactions in aerobic conditions, over a …

The Relationship Between Different Forms Of Exercise And Adhd Symptomatology, Matthew A. Reynolds
Master's Theses
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with executive function deficits as well as negative life outcomes in both childhood and adulthood. Current treatments to reduce symptoms of ADHD include stimulant medications that act as catecholamine agonists. These medications often cause undesirable side effects, to which end better understanding the effects of non- pharmacological treatments on symptoms of ADHD is critical. Research conducted in children suggests that exercise may be an effective tool for symptom reduction. However, the relationship between exercise and ADHD symptoms remains unclear for adults. The aim of this study was to address this …

Examination Of Flow Patterns During Droplet Formation And In Venous Valve Mimic Using Μ-Piv, Vignesha Vijayananda
Master's Theses
In this work, particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used for fluid flow visualization in both continuous and segmented-flow microfluidics. Droplet microfluidics is known for its precise and consistent volume dispersion between microliters and picoliters in volume for application ranging from molecular synthesis, drug discover, and diagnostics. But the influence of junction geometry on the process of drop formation has not been investigated. In this study, µ-PIV was used to study the internal flow during the drop formation process in flow-focus microfluidic device with and without constriction. It was found that in case of flow-focus with constriction, the shear force on …
Evaluating Effect Of Folic Acid On Mouse Embryonic Fibroblast Cells With Impaired Dna Repair System, Suneeti Madhavan
Evaluating Effect Of Folic Acid On Mouse Embryonic Fibroblast Cells With Impaired Dna Repair System, Suneeti Madhavan
Master's Theses
Mandatory folic acid (FA) fortification programs have been introduced in many countries since 1998 [1]. This fortification program, especially when combined with vitamin supplements taken for health purposes, can lead to higher-than-normal levels of synthetic FA in the body [2]. Recent research has linked high levels of synthetic FA (more than the daily requirement of 400μg/day) with increased incidences of cancer [2-7]. In comparison, low levels of FA have been shown to cause DNA damage due to impaired DNA repair processes [8,9]. This study hypothesizes that increased levels of FA give rise to DNA modification. Therefore, if cells harbor an …

Analysis Of The Slo Bay Microbiome From A Network Perspective, Lien Viet Nguyen
Master's Theses
Microorganisms are key players in the ecosystem functioning. In this thesis, we developed a framework to preprocess raw microbiome data, build a correlation network, and analyze co-occurrence patterns between microbes. We then applied this framework to a marine microbiome dataset. The dataset used in this study comes from a year-long time-series to characterize the microbial communities in our coastal waters off the Cal Poly Pier. In analyzing this dataset, we were able to observe and confirm previously discovered patterns of interactions and generate hypotheses about new patterns. The analysis of co-occurrences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic taxa is relatively novel and …
Upending The "Racial Death-Wish": Black Gay Liberation And The Culture Of Black Homophobia, Kailyn Pope
Upending The "Racial Death-Wish": Black Gay Liberation And The Culture Of Black Homophobia, Kailyn Pope
Master's Theses
This thesis analyzes the origin and impact of Black homophobia found in activist spaces of mid- to late-twentieth-century American society. Black gay Americans were subjected to intersecting forms of systemic and cultural oppression that were exceedingly hard to escape due to both the homophobia in Black spaces and the racism in gay spaces. Black gay activists and artists thus had to create their own avenues of expression where they and others could fully embrace what it meant to be Black and gay. This work utilizes a Black feminist framework to explore the roots of Black homophobia and how this type …

Master's Theses
With the increasing development of metal additive manufacturing technology, the present need for accurate explosivity testing of high density and exotic metal powders is under active research. The accuracy of such tests depends upon the uniformity of the dust dispersion within the testing chambers during ignition. There is a need for further research to understand the dust cloud dispersion process in order to determine the best time for ignition. This study explores a methodology of using high-speed footage and image analysis to characterize the uniformity of a dust cloud temporally that future applications may build upon.
This thesis consisted of …
Effects Of Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria And Fungi On Strawberry Plant Health, Fruit Yield, And Disease Susceptibility, Mary Maher
Master's Theses
Studies on plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and fungi (PGPF) as biostimulants have shown significant positive effects on plant health, fruit yield, or pest management. However, very few published studies to date have been specific regarding their effects on strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa), particularly on soilborne disease prevalence in organically grown strawberries. Empirical data on the results of using these products in commercial growing applications under various conditions would be highly valuable, especially for organic growers who have limited synthetic chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers registered for use. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of …

Analysis And Optimization Of A Colorimetric Nanosensor For Rapid Detection Of Escherichia Coli In Water, Sarah M. Stabler
Master's Theses
Safe drinking water is essential for life, yet at least two billion people around the world consume water contaminated with pathogens among other pollutants. Standard methods like polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and membrane filtration have been developed to detect enteric pathogens in water. However, these methods are limited in their accessibility due to long wait times to obtain results, and the requirements of skilled expertise, electricity, and laboratory equipment. This research has focused on addressing some of these limitations by analyzing the mechanisms of work and optimizing an indirect colorimetric nanosensor developed in previous research. The colorimetric nanosensor investigated herein …
Selection Of Overwintering Microclimate By Migratory Western Monarch Butterflies, Kiana Saniee
Selection Of Overwintering Microclimate By Migratory Western Monarch Butterflies, Kiana Saniee
Master's Theses
Migratory species are expected to demonstrate habitat selection that occurs at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Western monarch butterflies migrate seasonally to overwinter in groves at geographically predictable locations along the California coast. To date, overwintering habitat selection by western monarch butterflies has been studied assuming that habitat selection occurs where overwintering aggregations form, meaning at the spatial scale where monarchs form dense overwintering aggregations within overwintering groves. We argue that since western monarch butterflies are migratory, studies of habitat selection could have commingled selection at different scales into a single spatial scale. This likely leads to ignoring some levels …

Habitat Heterogeneity Affects The Thermal Ecology Of The Federally Endangered Blunt-Nosed Leopard Lizard, Nicole Gaudenti
Master's Theses
Global climate change is already contributing to the extirpation of numerous species worldwide, and sensitive species will continue to face challenges associated with rising temperatures throughout this century and beyond. It is especially important to evaluate the thermal ecology of endangered ectotherm species now so that mitigation measures can be taken as early as possible. A recent study of the thermal ecology of the federally endangered Blunt-Nosed Leopard Lizard (Gambelia sila) suggested that they face major activity restrictions due to thermal constraints in their desert habitat, but that large shade-providing shrubs act as thermal buffers to allow them …

Examining The Ecological And Social Implications Of Parklets And Plazas Across Multiple Urban Scales, Joshua L. Muller
Master's Theses
Faced with population increases but stagnant capital improvements and impacts from global warming, cities around the world are experimenting with smaller-scale and cheaper strategies in order to accommodate the new influx of residents. New York City has led the way in converting low-efficiency intersection space into public plazas with a limited range of permanently installed elements and San Francisco has pioneered the concept of the parklet, which converts two to four street parking spaces into a modular and flexible pedestrian space. I seek to answer two questions about these spaces: What are common factors influencing the viability and successful implementation …

Development Of A Portable Low-Moisture Food Pasteurization Device Using Rf Heating, Eric Jason Ohata
Master's Theses
Bacterial presence in low-moisture foods such as flour, cereals, baby formula, and spices, have become a concern due to sanitizing challenges. The food industry currently focuses on wet food sanitation as opposed to low-moisture foods because of bacteria’s inability to reproduce in low water activity media. Traditionally, food processing RF heating pasteurizes in mass quantities while an equivalent consumer device does not exist the market today. A consumer product would help eliminate food waste by providing an easy way to sanitize food and extend shelf life. The Portable Food Pasteurization (PFP) project is an interdisciplinary project involving the Electrical Engineering, …
