Nutrition And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Older Adults In The Us, Nhanes 2009–2012, Jessica Anne Hews
Nutrition And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Older Adults In The Us, Nhanes 2009–2012, Jessica Anne Hews
Master's Theses
Few studies have investigated the relationship between diet quality and health-related quality of life (HRQOL), especially in the older adult population that is most at risk for poor diet and health. Self-perceived HRQOL is a more powerful predictor of morbidity and mortality than objective measures of health. The aim of this thesis was to examine the association between nutrition-related factors (especially diet quality) and HRQOL in community-dwelling older adults aged 60 and above. This research used cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 cycles to select and include diet quality variables, meal-related variables, …

Master's Theses
The epidemic of adolescent obesity has become one of the greatest public health concerns in the United States. Approximately 20.5% of adolescents of both sexes aged 12-19 years are considered obese. Higher rates of obesity are evident in ethnic minority and lower income status children with the highest prevalence among Hispanic/Latino and Black populations. The causes for obesity are multifactorial in nature and highlight disparities nationwide. These factors include socioeconomic status, education, environment, availability and access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and behavior patterns. Successful intervention methods that have reduced the impact of adolescent obesity have incorporated nutrition knowledge and …
Automated Vehicles: A Guide For Planners And Policymakers, Charlie Coles
Automated Vehicles: A Guide For Planners And Policymakers, Charlie Coles

Exploring Transit Ridership Using Census, Routing & Scheduling, And Stop Characteristic Data, Douglas Harvey Moody
Master's Theses
This study develops, analyzes, and applies transit-system-specific regression tree models that identify and prioritize transit system improvements through analysis and application of ridership, Census, routing and scheduling, and transit stop characteristic data. Regression trees identify and rank independent variables that split dependent variable datasets into meaningful subsets according to significant relationships with independent variable datasets, and regression tree models can be used to identify and prioritize transit system improvements. In this study, ridership datatypes are the dependent variables (i.e., boardings and alightings) and Census, routing and scheduling, and transit stop characteristic datatypes are the independent variables. Data associated with the …
Structural Damage Detection By Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Mode Shapes, William George Rosenblatt
Structural Damage Detection By Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Mode Shapes, William George Rosenblatt
Master's Theses
Existing methods of evaluating the structural system of a building after a seismic event consist of removing architectural elements such as drywall, cladding, insulation, and fireproofing. This method is destructive and costly in terms of downtime and repairs. This research focuses on removing the guesswork by using forced vibration testing (FVT) to experimentally determine the health of a building. The experimental structure is a one-story, steel, bridge-like structure with removable braces. An engaged brace represents a nominal and undamaged condition; a dis-engaged brace represents a brace that has ruptured thus changing the stiffness of the building. By testing a variety …

Fluid Flow Characterization In Rapid Prototyped Common Iliac Artery Aneurysm Molds, Daniel Cole Greinke
Master's Theses
The goal of this project was to determine whether i) fused deposition modeling could be employed to manufacture molds for vascular constructs, ii) whether vascular constructs could be created from these molds, and iii) to verify practical equivalence between observed fluid velocities. Dye tracking was to be employed to characterize fluid velocity profiles through the in vitro vascular constructs, including a half-vessel model and a full vessel model of an iliac artery aneurysm. A PDMS half-vessel construct was manufactured, and the movement of dye through the construct was tracked by a cellphone camera. Thresholds were applied to each video in …
Toward High Performance Nanocarbon Fibers, Michaela R. Pfau
Toward High Performance Nanocarbon Fibers, Michaela R. Pfau
Master's Theses
High performance carbon fibers (CFs) have been a commercially available since their commercial boom in the 1970s, and are generally produced via carbonization of poly (acrylonitrile) (PAN). More recently, carbon nanomaterials like graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been discovered and have shown excellent mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties due to their sp2 carbon repeating structure. Graphene and CNTs can both be organized into macroscopic fibers using a number of different techniques, resulting in fibers with promising mechanical performance that can be readily multifunctionalized. In some cases, the two materials have been combined, and the resulting hybrid fibers have …

Existing office buildings’ embodied energy, history and culture offer something a newly constructed building cannot. On the other hand, new office buildings’ adoption of new technologies and building philosophies offer a range of sustainable efficiencies previously unavailable. Combining these efficiencies with elements that embrace human diversity and well- being offer the opportunity to not only mend our existing buildings’ deteriorating physical bodies but aid in creating workplaces that promote good physical and mental health.
This project provides recommendation on how an existing high-rise commercial building can incorporate a number of incremental improvements that continually evolve to meet rapidly changing market …
Adolescents’ Emotion Disclosure To Same-Sex And Cross-Sex Friends And Associations With Empathetic Distress And Latino Boys’ Machismo, Janill Marquez
Adolescents’ Emotion Disclosure To Same-Sex And Cross-Sex Friends And Associations With Empathetic Distress And Latino Boys’ Machismo, Janill Marquez
Master's Theses
Friendships are important for social and emotional adjustment. Friendships are adaptive, as they help in the maturation of social skills (Asher, Parker, & Walker, 1996; Berndt, 1982; Sullivan, 1953) and provide emotional and cognitive resources for support and coping (Berndt, 1982). However, not all friendships are created equal. Differences exist across the sexes, particularly in regards to emotion disclosure. The current study assesses girls’ and boys’ emotion disclosure to same-sex and cross-sex friends. It also explores the relationship between emotion disclosure and empathetic distress- a maladaptive form of empathizing with a friend. In a subsample of Latino boys, this study …
Becoming Adults: Trajectories Of Adult Identity Development Among Undergraduate Students With Implications For Mental Health, Jenna Shapiro
Becoming Adults: Trajectories Of Adult Identity Development Among Undergraduate Students With Implications For Mental Health, Jenna Shapiro
Master's Theses
One of the defining developmental processes that occur during the unique stage of emerging adulthood is the emergence of adult identity, or the subjective sense of adulthood. Adult identity has been hypothesized to grow gradually, linearly, and at different rates for subgroups of individuals over the course of this stage (Arnett, 2006; Côté, 2006). Differences have also been suggested to predict wellbeing and distress (Côté, 2006; Kroger, 1996; Kroger, Martinussen, & Marcia, 2010). The goals of the current study were to examine heterogeneity in adult identity development over four years in college and to examine differences in self-esteem and negative …
Metrics Dashboard Services: A Framework For Analyzing Free/Open Source Team Repositories, Fnu Shilpika
Metrics Dashboard Services: A Framework For Analyzing Free/Open Source Team Repositories, Fnu Shilpika
Master's Theses
Software engineering as practiced today (especially in the industry) is no longer about the stereotypical monolithic life cycle processes (e.g. waterfall, spiral, etc.) found in most software engineering textbooks. These heavyweight methods historically have impeded progress for small/medium sized development teams owing to their inherent complexity and rather limited data collection strategies that predominated the 1980s until relatively recently in the mid-2000s. The discipline and practice of software engineering includes software quality, which has an established theoretical foundation for doing software metrics. Software metrics are a critical tool which provide continuous insight to products and processes and help build reliable …

Activity Recognition For Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Subjects Using Hidden Markov Models, Pichleap Sok
Master's Theses
Successful activity recognition in patients with motor disabilities can improve patient care by providing researchers and clinicians with valuable information on patient movements and quality of life in real-world settings. Understanding the everyday activities of patients is important for rehabilitation. For researchers, having convenient, objective, and continuous data can drastically improve outcome measures to better compare therapies, and ultimately make recommendations. For clinicians, individual assessment of compliance and outcomes outside the clinic can be more objective, permitting much more tailored recommendations to patients. Most importantly, for individual patients, activity recognition can make this improved health care possible by simply having …
Cortical And Psychological Mechanisms Of Visceral Pain, Kelly L. Polnaszek
Cortical And Psychological Mechanisms Of Visceral Pain, Kelly L. Polnaszek
Master's Theses
Objective: Dysmenorrhea is an incapacitating type of visceral pain that affects numerous menstruating women and is defined by painful menstrual cramps and often occurs in the absence of pelvic pathology. Women with dysmenorrhea have reported higher sensitivity to experimental pain, and vulnerability to pain sensitivity may be a primary risk factor for developing chronic pelvic pain for women with dysmenorrhea. Cross-organ sensitization (COS), or the theory that uterine inflammation during menstruation can contribute to chronic pelvic pain by generating neurogenic inflammation in other organs, may be a primary mechanism associated with pelvic pain in women with dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea sufferers with …
Lipoate Metabolism In Staphylococcus Aureus Pathogenesis, Maria Azul Zorzoli
Lipoate Metabolism In Staphylococcus Aureus Pathogenesis, Maria Azul Zorzoli
Master's Theses
Lipoate is an essential cofactor of several proteins involved in cellular energy homeostasis and catabolism. Lipoate metabolism has been linked to pathogenesis in some microbial species, but its role in Staphylococcus aureus infections had not been explored. In this thesis, we tested the hypothesis that lipoate acquisition mechanisms promote S. aureus infectivity. We used a bacterial genetics approach to elucidate the biological function of the S. aureus genes involved in lipoate metabolism. Our findings allowed us to propose a model for lipoic acid de novo biosynthesis and salvage pathways in S. aureus. Moreover, we detail hitherto undescribed genetic arrangements of …
The Relation Between Appearance Evaluation And Disordered Eating Attitudes Throughout College: Trajectories And Moderators, Amy Heard
Master's Theses
The college years are a time of increased risk for body image concerns and disordered eating in both men and women. Studies have shown that body image concerns may emerge in childhood, increase throughout adolescence, and become more stable in middle adulthood, but less is known about the changes that happen during the college years that may cause these concerns to level off. One of the most common ways of assessing body image is by measuring appearance evaluation, or global satisfaction with appearance. While problematic appearance evaluation and disordered eating attitudes are often associated with one another, all individuals who …
Popularity Prediction Of Reddit Texts, Tracy Rohlin
Popularity Prediction Of Reddit Texts, Tracy Rohlin
Master's Theses
Popularity prediction is a useful technique for marketers to anticipate the success of marketing campaigns, to build recommendation systems that suggest new products to consumers, and to develop targeted advertising. Researchers likewise use popularity prediction to measure how popularity changes within a community or within a given timespan. In this paper, I explore ways to predict popularity of posts in reddit.com, which is a blend of news aggregator and community forum. I frame popularity prediction as a text classification problem and attempt to solve it by first identifying topics in the text and then classifying whether the topics identified are …

Diagnostic Practices Of Autism Spectrum Disorders In Brazil, Ana Claudia Vespa Mainer Dias
Diagnostic Practices Of Autism Spectrum Disorders In Brazil, Ana Claudia Vespa Mainer Dias
Master's Theses
In Brazil, in spite of over half a million students with special needs in primary education, little research has been conducted about ASD diagnostic practices. This involves learning about the training that professionals are receiving, what diagnostic practices are being implemented on the field, and whether those are being contextualized according to the Brazilian culture. Students with special needs are directly affected by the results of diagnostic practices, since identifying the individuals is one of the first steps. Lack of understanding about that stage may lead to the problematic realities of underidentification or overidentification, exclusion of children who should receive …

Understanding Academic Achievement Among Low-Income, Urban, Black Adolescents: The Role Of Father Involvement, Patrick Henry
Master's Theses
Although the Black-White test score gap has improved over time, it still persists. Furthermore, this academic risk for Black youth is compounded by the disproportionate representation of Blacks among low-income families in the U.S. Thus, the present study aims to shed light on factors related to greater academic success among adolescents in low-income, urban, Black families. Overall, this study addresses the following question. How does the presence of a biological father and positive father involvement impact the academic achievement of their adolescent children? Data from the Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study (TCS) were analyzed in order to address …
Waiting On You: A Study Of Tipped Minimum Wages' Effects On Job Tenure Among White Restaurant Servers, John Henry Sienkiewicz
Waiting On You: A Study Of Tipped Minimum Wages' Effects On Job Tenure Among White Restaurant Servers, John Henry Sienkiewicz
Master's Theses
Many restaurant servers do not make adequate earnings under the current tipped wage system in America. On top of this, restaurant servers largely lack benefits such as paid sick days and health insurance. Unsurprisingly, those in the food and accommodation industry exhibit among the highest rates of voluntary turnover. As research has shown that raising the non-tipped, standard minimum wage decreases employee turnover and increases overall job tenure, it follows that increases in the tipped minimum wage may increase job tenure for restaurant servers. Using survey data from nearly 1700 white restaurant servers from 2006, this multiple regression analysis shows …

Lactobacillus Crispatus Produces A Bacteridical Molecule That Kills Uropathogenic E. Coli, Katherine Diebel
Lactobacillus Crispatus Produces A Bacteridical Molecule That Kills Uropathogenic E. Coli, Katherine Diebel
Master's Theses
As many as 1 in 2 women will have at least one urinary tract infection (UTI) in their lifetime. UTIs can cause complications in pregnancy and decrease quality of life, and their treatment and prevention are expensive. Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) is the primary cause of UTI. The probiotic and bactericidal capacities of gut and vaginal Lactobacillus isolates have been studied, but the same attention has not been paid to urinary strains. These urinary isolates of L. crispatus appear to have a greater killing capacity against UPEC and this bactericidal activity does not depend on the cells themselves, consistent with …

A Study Of Immune-Regulation Of Microbiota Supernatant On Macrophage Function, An N. Nguyen
A Study Of Immune-Regulation Of Microbiota Supernatant On Macrophage Function, An N. Nguyen
Master's Theses
The diverse human microbial ecosystem colonizes many different body sites. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract, especially, is a major region that that harbors a complex microbial community composed of trillions of commensal bacteria. Interactions between the commensal bacteria and the host immune system begin at birth and continue through the human lifespan. In the gut, commensal bacteria help the host to ensure the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis as well as the mucosal barrier structure through host stimulation of mucus and antimicrobial molecules. The secretion of these host factors functions to inhibit pathogenic invasion and maintain the population of commensal bacteria. The …
Characterization Of Il-22-Producing Cells In The Human Thymus And The Mechanism By Which Il-22 Expression Is Modulated By Thymic Epithelial Cells., Nadine N. Morgan
Characterization Of Il-22-Producing Cells In The Human Thymus And The Mechanism By Which Il-22 Expression Is Modulated By Thymic Epithelial Cells., Nadine N. Morgan
Master's Theses
Thymic epithelial cells (TECs) are indispensable for T cell development and maturation. Therefore, damages to the thymic epithelial cells are detrimental to thymic function and immune response. In young healthy individuals, TECs have a high regenerative potential and are capable of renewal from serious damage; however, the molecular mechanism of this recovery is unclear. A recent study has shown that IL-22-producing ILCs are present in the mouse thymus and can regenerate thymic epithelial cells following radiation induced injuries. However, it is unknown whether IL-22-producing cells are also found in the human thymus. Thus, the goal of this study is to …
