Cots Gis Integration And Its Soap-Based Web Services, Ying Wu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the modern geographic information systems, COTS software has been playing a major role. However, deploying heterogeneous GIS software has the tendency to form fragmented data sets and to cause inconsistency. To accomplish data consolidation, we must achieve interoperability between different GIS tools. In my thesis project, I developed Vector and Raster Data Adapters to implement the spatial data consolidation. I deployed ArcIMS to publish the spatial data and metadata onto Internet. Furthermore, the SOAP-Based GIS Web services are implemented to achieve the enterprise information system integration. The contribution of ours in this project is we have streamlined the COTS …
Influence Of Underfill On Ball Grid Array (Bga) Package Fatigue Life, Geetha Chilakamarthi
Influence Of Underfill On Ball Grid Array (Bga) Package Fatigue Life, Geetha Chilakamarthi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The influence of underfill material properties on the fatigue life of Ball Grid Array (BGA) packages that are subjected to thermal cycling is investigated in this study. A finite element model is created using Ansys by assuming the existence of an infinite array of solder interconnects, cylindrical in shape, surrounded by underfill material. Axial stresses in the interconnects are determined as a temperature loading is applied. The results show that these normal stresses are on the same order of magnitude as the hydrostatic compressive stresses induced in the solder upon underfill curing. Therefore it is concluded that for the range …

Wireless Networks is a very growing market. However, the security measures are not strong enough; the WEP security protocol is flawed. The 802.11 Task Group I is working on new security measures in order to strengthen the access control of users, the privacy and the integrity of data. We will describe the WEP flaws and the new security measures of 802.11 Task Group I. Finally, we will propose a new architecture to improve user identification for the wireless network of our department.
Investigation On Material Dispersion As A Function Of Pressure And Temperature For Sensor Design, Rajiv Mididoddi
Investigation On Material Dispersion As A Function Of Pressure And Temperature For Sensor Design, Rajiv Mididoddi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The concept of material dispersion is an important factor in analyzing the performance of an optical fiber system. The thesis presents an analysis of the material dispersion as a function of any pressure (in Mega Newton's per square meter) and temperature (in degrees Celsius). The pressure dependent and temperature dependent Sellmeier coefficients are considered for the analysis. The results obtained can be used in building a sensor that can be used for measuring dispersion as a function of pressure or temperature.

Investigation Of Microcrack Growth In [0/90]S Graphite Epoxy Composite Laminates Using X-Ray Microtomography, Arun Tatiparthi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Graphite epoxy composites are being used in aerospace industry and spacecraft applications for their light weight and high strength. As a matter of fact these materials also have some disadvantages like damage which is hazardous when used in cryogenic application. Composite materials IM7/977-2, IM7/5555 and IM7/5276-1 are of interest for the aerospace industry and this research concentrates on study of microcracking, delamination and other defects in the [0/90]s composite laminates of the above materials. These materials were uni-axially tested to pre-determined stress levels and the damages in the material were recorded in the form of microcrack density at different stress …
Determination Of Noncovalent Intermolecular Interaction Energy From Electron Densities, Yuguang Ma
Determination Of Noncovalent Intermolecular Interaction Energy From Electron Densities, Yuguang Ma
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Noncovalent intermolecular interactions, widely found in molecular clusters and bio-molecules, play a key role in many important processes, such as phase changes, folding of proteins and molecular recognition. However, accurate calculation of interaction energies is a very difficult task because the interactions are normally very weak. Rigorous expressions for the electrostatic and polarization interaction energies between two molecules A and B, in term of the electronic densities, have been programmed: (see formula in document). Z is atomic charge, ρ0 is the electron density of the isolated molecule and Δρind is the electron density change of the molecule caused …

Towards Integration Of Soap-Based Web Services And Ogc Web Services, Shujing Shu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Over the last several years, the Web Services model of Geographic Information Systems has been rapidly evolved and materialized. In this thesis project, I have reviewed the current status of integrating the general Web Services technology (SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI) and OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) Web services standards in developing distributed GIS computing. The overlap of the web service model and the technology stack between the SOAP-based Web Services and OGC Web Services indicates the feasibility of integration. OGC has named all core general Web Services Technologies (SOAP, WSDL, UDDI) in its envisioned OWS architecture. OGC has also started putting efforts …
The Acquisition Of The English Present Perfect By A Speaker Of Brazilian Portuguese, Eleomarques Rocha
The Acquisition Of The English Present Perfect By A Speaker Of Brazilian Portuguese, Eleomarques Rocha
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study contributes to the debate about the importance of focus on form to adult second language acquisition with an investigation of a Portuguese-speaking adult's acquisition of English present perfect from a historical, correlational, and qualitative viewpoint. Using a husband-wife interaction in the L1, it investigates whether explicit grammar instruction and error correction can lead to automatic production. The focus of the study, the distinction between L1 present simple and L2 present perfect, is contrasted with a control distinction: L1 stative and L2 progressive. The importance of these distinctions is that both are semantically challenging for the L2 acquirer; therefore, …
Life Is A One-Way Ticket: Herman Leonard's Eightieth Birthday Celebration, George Ingmire
Life Is A One-Way Ticket: Herman Leonard's Eightieth Birthday Celebration, George Ingmire
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Life is a One-Way Ticket is a twenty-three minute documentary about jazz photographer Herman Leonard's 80th birthday party. The event took place at Rosy's Jazz Hall, a club in the uptown section of New Orleans where musicians including Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Stevie Wonder once performed. Within the documentary, I show the celebration as an analogy for the life of Herman Leonard. In short but moving passages, Herman Leonard reflects upon the nature of his longevity, the world today, and the "luck" he has had with photography. In addition to the voice of Herman Leonard, interviews with Herman Leonard's …

A Fuzzy/Neural Approach To Cost Prediction With Small Data Sets, Holly Danker-Mcdermot
A Fuzzy/Neural Approach To Cost Prediction With Small Data Sets, Holly Danker-Mcdermot
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The project objective in this work is to create an accurate cost estimate for NASA engine tests at the John C. Stennis Space Center testing facilities using various combinations of fuzzy and neural systems. The data set available for this cost prediction problem consists of variables such as test duration, thrust, and many other similar quantities, unfortunately it is small and incomplete. The first method implemented to perform this cost estimate uses the locally linear embedding (LLE) algorithm for a nonlinear reduction method that is then put through an adaptive network based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The second method is …
Sensitivity To Dopamine D1/D2 Receptor Stimulation In Mice Lacking Connexin-32 Or Connexin-36, James Mckenna
Sensitivity To Dopamine D1/D2 Receptor Stimulation In Mice Lacking Connexin-32 Or Connexin-36, James Mckenna
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Previous work has shown D1/D2 requisite synergism can still occur in the striatum in the absence of action potentials. Some nonclassical communication such as gap junctions may be allowing the segregated dopamine (DA) receptors to interact to produce stereotyped motor activity. Connexin-32 (Cx32) and connexin-36 (Cx36) were targeted for study due to their abundance in neural tissues and presence in the striatum. Mice lacking either the Cx32 or Cx36 gene and their respective wildtype littermates were compared on a climbing behavior task used to gauge their dopaminergic activity after receiving either saline, D1 agonist, D2 agonist, or both D1 and …

Investigation Of Surface Displacements Induced In Loaded Cross-Ply Composite Laminates With Microcracking, Balakishore Rayasam
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This work is aimed at investigating out-of-plane displacement data on the top surface of a loaded composite laminate containing microcracking damage to explore the feasibility of using surface data to locate microcracks in laminates. In this study, finite element models are created for eleven different cross-ply IM7/977-2 laminates with ply numbers varying from four to ten. Here, each ply thickness is 0.127mm, which is the common laminate thickness commercially available for this material system. For each model a range of transverse loadings are applied and the surface displacement data are analyzed along the mid-plane perpendicular to the plane of the …

Giant Magnetoresistance In Magnetic Multilayers Using A New Embossed Surface, Athanasios Chalastaras
Giant Magnetoresistance In Magnetic Multilayers Using A New Embossed Surface, Athanasios Chalastaras
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Previous research on new novel substrates for giant magnoresistance structures has indicated that a net increase in the effect is present. The substrates studied were V-grooved or stepped, however research presented in this thesis used an embossed surface manufactured from alumina oxide which consisted of regular hexagonal arrays with spacing of 110 nm and pore diameter of 60 nm. The physical properties measurements unveiled a net enhancement of the giant magnetoresistance effect thru the whole range of the copper spacer thicknesses deposited with direct current magnetron sputter. The maximum net increase appeared for a spacer thickness of 4.0 nm where …
Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Fret) Based Sensors For Bioanalysis, Gabriela Blagoi
Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (Fret) Based Sensors For Bioanalysis, Gabriela Blagoi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The objective of my PhD study was to develop and characterize new methods and sensors based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) for bioanalysis. Chapter 3 describes the use of FRET between donor fluorophores and acceptor labeled murine macrophage cells. FRET microscopy was used to determine whether the donor molecules truly permeate through the cell membrane or only adsorb to the cell surface. This method was found to be partially successful since the donor red tail fluorescence overlapped with the sensitized acceptor fluorescence and led to false reading of FRET. We found that is easier to monitor delivery of acceptor …
An Investigation Of Overreaction Via Implied Volatility And A Comparison Between Tracking Stocks And Carve-Outs As A Restructuring Choice, Wei He
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Chapter 1 of the dissertation investigates the firms' restructuring choice between minority carve-outs and tracking stocks using samples during 1990-2001. The extra compensation from the restructured units, the liquidity conditions, and the preservation of synergy are the significant factors determining a firm's restructuring decision. Additional compensation seems to be a major driving force behind restructuring via tracking stock. One year after the restructuring, the executive compensation of the tracking stock group increases by 241% compared to 32% for the carve-out sample. In spite of the significant increase in the compensation, the three-year buy-and-hold return for tracking stock parents is more …

The New Order Has Arrived: Dutch Morial, Reform, And The Sewerage And Water Board Of New Orleans, 1980-1981, Eric Hardy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This essay offers a brief examination of the interaction between New Orleans Mayor Ernest "Dutch" Morial and the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans from the spring of 1980 to the late summer of 1981. Morial, the city's first African American mayor, attempted to implement several reform measures on the Sewerage and Water Board which included reduced term limits, an affirmative action policy, and a Minority Business Enterprise "set-aside" program despite opposition from a faction of white elite board members. These reforms reveal Morial's desire to confront social inequities in a post-integration southern city that were maintained in part …
Experiencing Racial Profiling: Process, Effects And Explanations, Foley Santamaria
Experiencing Racial Profiling: Process, Effects And Explanations, Foley Santamaria
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
What are the effects of profiling a minority group? I propose that being profiled lowers an individual's opinions of police as well as harms the police-community relationship. I analyze the results of a snowball sample consisting of qualitative interviews of six young African American males who think they have been racially profiled. The interviews were conducted in 2003 and 2004. A look at the process of racial profiling is included, and several explanations for law enforcement behavior emerged out of the interviews, including ideas of black criminality, acceptance, disrespect, and the presence of window tint. Furthermore, several significant effects emerged …
The Perfect Angel Hypothesis: The Effect Of Parents' False Perceptions On Children's Adjustment, Sonya Myers
The Perfect Angel Hypothesis: The Effect Of Parents' False Perceptions On Children's Adjustment, Sonya Myers
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the effects of parental false perceptions of their children's temperament on their subsequent school behavior problems. Participants were parents and teachers of 97 kindergarten children in an urban southern community. Both parents and teachers completed questionnaires on children's temperament, while teachers reported on children's school behaviors. Results indicate that both parent and teacher report of child temperament is related to school behavior problems, however, when parental ratings are more favorable than teacher ratings, this favorability is related to more internalizing and externalizing behaviors in school. In addition, parents rated their children higher on negative emotions, while parents …

Simulation Of Combustion And Thermal Flow Inside An Industrial Boiler, Raja Saripalli
Simulation Of Combustion And Thermal Flow Inside An Industrial Boiler, Raja Saripalli
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Industrial boilers that produce steam or electric power represent a large capital investment as well as a crucial facility for overall plant operations. In real applications, the operation of the superheater for producing high-pressure, high-temperature steam may result in problems frequently caused by ruptured superheater tubes. To make the boiler more efficient, less emission and less prone to tube rupture problems, it is important to understand the combustion and thermal flow behaviors inside the boiler. This study performs a detailed simulation of combustion and thermal flow behaviors inside an industrial boiler. The simulations are conducted using the commercial CFD package …

Knowing In Childbirth, Jane Savage
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Research on knowing in childbirth has largely been a quantitative process. The purpose of this study was to better understand the ways nine, first-time mothers learn about birth. A phenomenological approach using a feminist view was used to analyze two in-depth interviews and journals to understand first time expectant mothers' experiences of knowing in childbirth. The findings demonstrated a range of knowledge that contributed to issues of control, confidence, hope, and conflict. The participants also described an increased dependency on their mothers and a lack of intuition contiguous to the birth process. These findings contribute understanding as to how expectant …
The Predictability Of International Mutual Funds, Mohammed Imtiaz Ahmed Mazumder
The Predictability Of International Mutual Funds, Mohammed Imtiaz Ahmed Mazumder
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The predictability of the US-based international mutual fund returns has received renewed consideration in recent academic studies. This dissertation extends recent research by exploring the 2,479 daily return observations covering the period from January 4, 1993 to October 31, 2002 for all categories of international mutual funds. This exploration splits the sample, uses the initial sub-sample to investigate return patterns of international mutual funds and develops trading rules based on the predictable return patterns, and tests those rules on the holdout sample. The empirical findings suggest that smart investors may earn higher riskadjusted returns by following daily dynamic trading strategies. …
