Exocellular Polymeric Substances, Bioflocculation And Sludge Settling Properties In A Combined Anaerobic/Activated Sludge Process, Jackeline Luque May 2005

Exocellular Polymeric Substances, Bioflocculation And Sludge Settling Properties In A Combined Anaerobic/Activated Sludge Process, Jackeline Luque

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Combined anaerobic/aerobic processes for municipal wastewater treatment is quite recent; the studies developed have shown these processes are feasible for the removal of organic, nutrient substances and reduction of sludge produced. Previous studies developed at the Marrero Wastewater pilot plant (fully aerobic system) revealed that the minimum solids contact chamber hydraulic residence (HRT) time in which bioflocculation occurs satisfactorily (effluent SS concentrations < 20 mg/L) is 15 min; however, in the combined anaerobic/aerobic system HRT< 100 minutes resulted in poor floc settling properties and turbid supernatants. Exocellular polymeric substances (EPS) have been found to be the key factor for bioflocculation to occur. Past studies in fully aerobic pilot plant demonstrated that the concentration of EPS increased with mixed liquor concentration and solids retention time. The main purpose of this research is to determine the effect of mixed volatile suspended solids(MLVSS), solids retention time(SRT), and dissolved oxygen(DO) in the production of EPS in the combined anaerobic/ solids contact chamber and its relationship with settling parameters. To carry out the objectives of this investigation three experimental phases were developed : 1) The MLVSS concentration was varied between 1000-4000 mg/l, keeping the SRT and DO as constant as possible 2) The SRT was changed between 2-8 days, keeping the MLVSS concentration between 1500-3500 mg/l and DO between 2-3 mg/l 3) the DO concentration was varied between 0-5mg/l. For a DO of zero, EPS were extracted from the sludge produced in the anaerobic reactor. Analysis of the data showed that the combined system proved to be unstable producing unexpected results such as no clear relationship between MLVSS and EPS. For a DO of zero, no EPS are produced and no flocculation takes place; therefore, effluents with poor quality can be expected from anaerobic treatment units. To meet secondary effluent standards in aeration chamber, capable of promoting the transformation from anaerobic to aerobic biota, and the generation of EPS, high SRT and HRT is required. Under these conditions the system anaerobic/solids contact chamber has an excellent potential for providing secondary treatment for municipal wastewater; nevertheless, the system is not as stable as the conventional aerobic one and bulking problems are common and difficult to content.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Miniaturized Fluorescence Sensors For Aqueous And Cellular Measurements, Aihui Ma May 2005

Synthesis And Characterization Of Miniaturized Fluorescence Sensors For Aqueous And Cellular Measurements, Aihui Ma

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this Ph.D. study was to develop new and improved miniaturized particle-based optochemical sensors for the analysis of biological fluid and cellular components. This is highly important because current sensing systems can be biologically toxic and incompatible, invasive, and have limited responsiveness. To accomplish this goal we defined three tasks. The first was to develop lipobead-based sensors for chloride. The halide-specific fluorescence dye, lucigenin, was immobilized into the phospholipid membrane of the lipobeads to enable chloride ion detection. The fluorescence intensity of lucigenin decreases with increasing chloride ion concentration due to dynamic quenching. To stabilize the lipobeads we …

Principals' Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Alternatively Certified Teachers In New Orleans Public Schools, Jacquelyn Mahatha

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In response to increasing attention to the issues of teacher quality, quantity, and the mandate for highly qualified teachers, alternative approaches to teacher certification have become widespread. Alternative certification allows individuals who typically posses an undergraduate degree in a field other than education to participate in shortened training and/or on- the- job learning experiences that lead to full certification. The number of alternatively certified teachers in urban hard to staff schools is growing. There are many debates as to the effectiveness of alternative certification. At the core of the arguments are issues surrounding teacher pedagogy, classroom management, and knowledge of …

The Moderating Effects Of Parenting On The Development Of Externalizing Problems In Toddlers, Sarah Robison May 2005

The Moderating Effects Of Parenting On The Development Of Externalizing Problems In Toddlers, Sarah Robison

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Clarifying processes associated with emerging externalizing behavior problems during early childhood was the focus of this study. Data were collected from 100 parent-child dyads when children were 2, 3, and 4 years. An incremental risk model was hypothesized to explain the emergence of externalizing behavior problems. Theoretically, children's temperamental propensity towards negative emotional reactivity increases risk for noncompliance, noncompliance that increases risk for externalizing behaviors by age 4. Parenting was identified as the mechanism by which children's progression along the incremental risk pathway is amplified or minimized; progression is only expected under conditions of harsh parenting. No statistical support emerged …

Magneto-Optic Spectroscopy And Near-Field Optical Coupling In Nanoparticle Composite Materials, Damon Smith May 2005

Magneto-Optic Spectroscopy And Near-Field Optical Coupling In Nanoparticle Composite Materials, Damon Smith

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Faraday rotation spectrum of composites containing magnetite nanoparticles is found to be dependent on the interparticle spacing of the constituent nanoparticles. The composite materials are prepared by combining chemicallysynthesized Fe3O4 (magnetite) nanoparticles (8 nm diameter) and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA). Composites are made containing a range of nanoparticle concentrations. The peak of the main spectral feature depends on nanoparticle concentration; this peak is observed to shift from approximately 470 nm for (dilute composites) to 560 nm (concentrated). A theory is presented based on the dipole approximation which accounts for optical coupling between magnetite particles. Qualitative correlations between theoretical calculations and experimental …

Utility Stock Splits: Signaling Motive Versus Liquidity Motive, Maria Mercedes Miranda May 2005

Utility Stock Splits: Signaling Motive Versus Liquidity Motive, Maria Mercedes Miranda

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Despite the rich literature on theories of stock splits, studies have omitted public utility firms from their analysis and only analyzed split by industrial firms when examining managerial motives for splitting their stock. I examine the liquidity-marketability hypothesis, which states that stock splits enhance the attractiveness of shares to individual investors and increase trading volume by adjusting prices to an optimum trading range. Changes in the regulatory process, resulting from EPACT, have opened a window of opportunity for the study and comparison of the two traditional motives for splitting stock --signaling versus liquidity-marketability motives. Public electric utility firms provide a …

How States Are Meeting The Highly Qualified Teacher Component Of Nclb, Jean Pinney May 2005

How States Are Meeting The Highly Qualified Teacher Component Of Nclb, Jean Pinney

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

As part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act the federal government has added the requirement that all schools receiving Title I funds must have "highly qualified teachers" in every classroom. The term "highly qualified teacher" comes from the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. What exactly is a "highly qualified" teacher? This part of the law is widely debated throughout the fifty states, but most agree that a teacher's subject-matter knowledge and experience result in increased student achievement.(Ansell& McCase, 2003) Some states have made progress in meeting the "highly qualified" requirement of NCLB. However, most …

Research suggests that decision-makers often use demographic characteristics for the purpose of influencing the sanctioning strategy allocated. The research study examines the extent to which the sanctioning strategies allocated are influenced by race and gender. The research is based on data gathered from Jefferson Parish Juvenile Services Department of Probation used to examine how race and gender influence juvenile sanctioning strategy allocation. The results from the discriminant analysis offers support for the argument that due to stereotypical perceptions on the part of decision makers, members of minority groups, in particular females may receive differential treatment than their white male counterparts. …

The Discursive Production Of Subjectivity In Television News: Reflecting The Other On The Obese Child's Body, Elise Chatelain May 2005

The Discursive Production Of Subjectivity In Television News: Reflecting The Other On The Obese Child's Body, Elise Chatelain

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this paper, I expand on poststructuralist and feminist theories of the body, gender, and subjectivity through an analysis of media discourse on childhood obesity. Through textual and narrative analyses of news segments on childhood obesity, I demonstrate that the obese child's body, as an abnormal body, is represented as a text of the 'abnormal' conditions in which that body is produced. Thus, the single-mother family structure and/or nonwhite and working class families -- families saturated with the excessive, out-of-control subjectivity of the Other-- are visible on the excessive, out-ofcontrol body of the obese child. I will argue that the …

A Multi-Dimensional Width-Bounded Geometric Separator And Its Applications To Protein Folding, Sorinel Oprisan May 2005

A Multi-Dimensional Width-Bounded Geometric Separator And Its Applications To Protein Folding, Sorinel Oprisan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

We used a divide-and-conquer algorithm to recursively solve the two-dimensional problem of protein folding of an HP sequence with the maximum number of H-H contacts. We derived both lower and upper bounds for the algorithmic complexity by using the newly introduced concept of multi-directional width-bounded geometric separator. We proved that for a grid graph G with n grid points P, there exists a balanced separator A subseteq P$ such that A has less than or equal to 1.02074 sqrt{n} points, and G-A has two disconnected subgraphs with less than or equal to {2over 3}n nodes on each subgraph. We also …
