Effects Of Bilingualism On Cognitive Processing In Adults., Christy J. Witt
Effects Of Bilingualism On Cognitive Processing In Adults., Christy J. Witt
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The primary objective of this dissertation was to empirically test the implications of the code-switching hypothesis (Peal & Lambert, 1962) for nonlinguistic cognitive abilities in bilingual adults. It was hypothesized that bilinguals, by virtue of their ability to switching between two linguistic systems, may enjoy cognitive advantages in the nonlinguistic domain for tasks that require abilities related to language switching. It was postulated that the underlying mechanisms of code switching are the bilingual's abilities to inhibit the processing of irrelevant information and activate previously suppressed information. To determine if a bilingual advantage exists for these abilities, bilingual and monolingual adults …
Appalachia On Stage: The *Southern Mountaineer In American Drama., Laura Grace Pattillo
Appalachia On Stage: The *Southern Mountaineer In American Drama., Laura Grace Pattillo
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines the portrayal of Southern Appalachian people and their culture in American drama, discussing works from time periods that range from the 1880s to the 1990s. The plays are grouped into categories that are reflective of mainstream America's perceptions of Appalachian culture: (1) the importance of family and gender roles, including the insider/outsider romance plot, (2) issues of violence and conflict between both internal and external forces within the region in the context of wars, feuds, and environmental and labor abuses, (3) the importance of folk practice and belief including tales of the supernatural, superstitious and astrological traditions, …
Densities Of 4-Ranks Of K(2) Of Rings Of Integers., Robert Burke Osburn
Densities Of 4-Ranks Of K(2) Of Rings Of Integers., Robert Burke Osburn
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Conner and Hurrelbrink established a method of determining the structure of the 2-Sylow subgroup of the tame kernel K2( O ) for certain quadratic number fields. Specifically, the 4-rank for these fields was characterized in terms of positive definite binary quadratic forms. Numerical calculations led to questions concerning possible density results of the 4-rank of tame kernels. In this thesis, we succeed in giving affirmative answers to these questions.
The Influence Of A Court Appointed Special Advocate On The Length Of Time In Out -Of -Home Care., Nancy Loker Hart
The Influence Of A Court Appointed Special Advocate On The Length Of Time In Out -Of -Home Care., Nancy Loker Hart
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of participation in a CASA child advocacy program on the length of time in out-of-home placement among children in foster care. Two groups of children, one group having a CASA volunteer, and the other not having a CASA volunteer, were compared on selected characteristics. Also, this study sought to determine if a model existed that explains a significant portion of the variance in the length of time in out-of-home placement among children in foster care. The demographic information analyzed was obtained using recorded information from the computerized files of the …

Effects Of The High -Probability Sequence With And Without Extinction In Children With Feeding Disorders., Jennifer Eileen Dawson
Effects Of The High -Probability Sequence With And Without Extinction In Children With Feeding Disorders., Jennifer Eileen Dawson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The effects of the high-probability instructional sequence, with and without extinction, on increasing compliance to eat in three children with severe food refusal and selectivity were evaluated. Pediatric feeding disorders, in which children refuse most or all food and drink, are a rare and life threatening problem that requires intensive treatment. The majority of behavioral techniques used with feeding disordered children manipulate the consequence of food refusal. The use of antecedent procedures in the treatment of food refusal has been limited. One antecedent technique, the high-probability instructional sequence, involves first presenting the individual with a series of instructions that he/she …

The main objective of this study is to examine the financial effects of Turkey's trade liberalization efforts, and evaluate the policy decisions made during the transition period toward full membership in the EU. In addition, trade relations between the enlarged EU and the rest of the world modeled to obtain complete general equilibrium results of Turkey-EU integration. In order to accomplish this objective, a single-country, multi-sector computable general equilibrium model is developed. The sectors evaluated are agriculture, manufacturing, and services. The Turkish economy is divided into 22 sectors: 2 agricultural, 18 manufacturing, and 2 services sectors. By so doing, the …
Photoemission And Photo-Absorption Studies Of Ultrathin Iron Films On Copper(100) Oxidized At Elevated Temperature., Reginaldt Hamilton Madjoe
Photoemission And Photo-Absorption Studies Of Ultrathin Iron Films On Copper(100) Oxidized At Elevated Temperature., Reginaldt Hamilton Madjoe
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this investigation, I have focused on understanding the structure and morphology of ultrathin iron oxide films and characterizing them by using LEED, photoemission (both angle-resolved and angle-integrated) and photoabsorption measurements. Fe films were deposited on a Cu(100) substrate at room temperature growing in a layer by layer fashion. The sample was then annealed to 810K in oxygen ambient. This oxidation process led to dramatic changes of the sample surface and electronic structure depending on initial Fe coverage. Half-metallic oxides such as CrO2 and Fe3O4 may provide opportunities for new magnetic devices since their single spin orientation at the Fermi …
The Curriculum Implications Of Liberation Theology As A Theory For Social Change., Alvaro Basista Alcazar
The Curriculum Implications Of Liberation Theology As A Theory For Social Change., Alvaro Basista Alcazar
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
From the perspective of those in the underside of history, contemporary education has so stagnated that it has lost its capacity to be a force for social change in a world plagued by social cruelties and injustice. Liberation theologians have shown considerable success in redirecting tightly institutionalized and intellectualized religious communities from their weddedness to imperial notions and practices of faith into one solidly aligned with the struggle of the poor and the marginalized. These theologians of the poor make a distinction between Christianity and Christendom---the former being the vision of a Jewish religious reformer named Yeshua and the latter …
Isolation And Characterization Of A Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemc Mutant., Karen Coleman Sullivan
Isolation And Characterization Of A Rhodobacter Capsulatus Hemc Mutant., Karen Coleman Sullivan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Rhodobacter capsulatus, a purple, nonsulfur photosynthetic bacterium, uses the tetrapyrrole pathway to synthesize four end products: heme, bacteriochlorophyll, vitamin B12, and siroheme. This laboratory has focused on the regulation of the common pathway leading from aminolevulinate to protoporphyrin IX in R. capsulatus. The common portion of the pathway is regulated up to 100-fold by changes in oxygen tension. Research on the regulation of this pathway has been hampered due to a lack of mutants. Until now, the only mutants isolated which block heme production are hemA mutants, which lack aminolevulinate synthase. Since R. capsulatus lacks a cytochrome-independent growth mechanism, mutations …
Improved Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Linear Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Of Oligonucleotides And Nucleic Acids Via Matrix Additives And Sample Preparatory Technique., Tracey Arlene Simmons
Improved Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Linear Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Of Oligonucleotides And Nucleic Acids Via Matrix Additives And Sample Preparatory Technique., Tracey Arlene Simmons
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
There are two prominent problems recurrent during matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) analysis of oligonucleotides: cation adduction and low molecular ion stability. It has been found that the use of organic base solutions of high gas-phase proton affinity, as used previously in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), can significantly reduce the cation adduction problem during MALDI-MS. It is proposed that the organic base solutions compete with alkali metal cations for binding to the phosphodiester backbone of the oligonucleotide upon transfer into the gas phase. A comparison of the utility of adding an organic base solution, such as imidazole, triethylamine …
Cultural Preservation In The Romansh Landscape: A Geography Of The Swiss -Romansh Movement., Erik George Prout
Cultural Preservation In The Romansh Landscape: A Geography Of The Swiss -Romansh Movement., Erik George Prout
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The research explores the cultural landscape of Romansh speakers in Switzerland. The fundamental question is whether small ethno-linguistic groups can create and protect a place (earthly and poetic) for their language to flourish. Swiss-Romansh have many advantages because of their political stability and economic prosperity. Their efforts in promoting and protecting the Romansh language offer a possible model for other culture groups. The research elucidates four distinct geographic scales: national (Switzerland's multilingual federalism), regional (alpine canton of Grischun/Graubunden), local Romansh villages (vinscnanca or communes), and an imaginary Rhactian ethnicity. I employ the term cultural preservation to discuss the Romansh situation. …
Analyzing Crime Spatial Patterns Using Remote Sensing And Geographical Information System Technologies: Investigating The Urban Opportunity Structure Model Of Jackson, Mississippi., Tian Wu
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Crime is a spatial phenomenon. This study has proposed an urban opportunity structure model to understand the spatial patterns associated with crime based on the opportunities defined by urban structure. Any site in an urban space presents crime opportunities; the crime probability at a site is determined by factors such as urban physical settings, the transportation network and land use types. The hypothesized model was tested through the approach of multi-scale spatial analyses comprised of units from precinct maps used by the Jackson Police Department. The scales were defined at different area aggregations. The first scale was set on individual …
Lithium Isotope Geochemistry Of Marine Sediments., Libo Zhang
Lithium Isotope Geochemistry Of Marine Sediments., Libo Zhang
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
While the isotope geochemistry of lithium in the marine environment is increasingly known, there are still outstanding problems concerning its oceanic budget and mantle-crust recycling that remain to be resolved. To evaluate the role of marine sediments in the oceanic budget, laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the extent of lithium adsorption on marine sediments and the magnitude of isotopic fractionation. Sediments from the Greenland margin were studied to gain further understanding of the sediment-water interaction. The isotopic compositions of the major types of marine sediments were characterized to understand the sedimentary cycle of lithium. The enhanced database permits a …
The Role Of Immunity In Resistance Of Gulf Coast Native Sheep To Haemonchus Contortus Infection., Maria Teresa Pena
The Role Of Immunity In Resistance Of Gulf Coast Native Sheep To Haemonchus Contortus Infection., Maria Teresa Pena
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Haemonchus contortus is a serious constraint for sheep production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The use of genetically resistant animals is a promising alternative for controlling nematode infections without relying on the use of anthelmintics. Extensive epidemiological studies demonstrated that Gulf Coast Native sheep are naturally resistant to H. contortus infection, but the mechanism underlying this resistance is not well known. The main purpose of this research was to define the components of the immune response that may be involved in resistance of GCN to H. contortus infection. Three studies were conducted. In the first study, a …
Catharine Maria Sedgwick's "Hope Leslie": Clues To A Woman's Journey., Sally Mcmillan Tyler
Catharine Maria Sedgwick's "Hope Leslie": Clues To A Woman's Journey., Sally Mcmillan Tyler
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Prevalent in both archetypal and religious literature, the journey motif weaves its way through tales of human growth-stories which grapple with the processes of how people come to be and to know. Such images of identity formation and knowledge construction hold significant implications for the field of education. Indeed, Huebner (1993) notes that "we do not need learning theory or developmental theory to explain human change...The question educators need to ask is not how people learn and develop, but what gets in the way of the great journey---the journey of the self or soul" (p. 405). While Huebner's suggested paradigm …
A Hierarchical Shape Representation By Convexities And Concavities And Its Application To Shape Matching., Gustavo Martinez
A Hierarchical Shape Representation By Convexities And Concavities And Its Application To Shape Matching., Gustavo Martinez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Shape contains information. The identification and extraction of this information is not straightforward and is the main problem of Shape Analysis. The current trend of manipulating visual information, makes this problem more important. The abundant work published about shape analysis can be classified into two main approaches: statistical shape analysis and structural shape analysis. The structural approach was proposed around thirty years ago by K. S. Fu. The large amount of works published since then, prove the difficulty of defining a universal set of primitives. The structural description of shape is based on the assumption that shape recognition is a …
A Study Of Stellar Orbits In A Rotating, Gaseous Bar., Eric Ian Barnes
A Study Of Stellar Orbits In A Rotating, Gaseous Bar., Eric Ian Barnes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In an effort to better understand the formation and evolution of barred galaxies, the properties of orbits in the effective potential of one specific model of a rapidly rotating, steady-state gas-dynamical bar that has been constructed via a self-consistent hydrodynamical simulation have been examined. This bar is used to test the following idea. If primordial galaxies evolve to a rapidly rotating, bar-like configuration before a significant amount of star formation has taken place, and then stars form from the gas that makes up the bar, the initial stellar distribution function should be much different than those used in previous bar …
Mapping Enredos Of Complex Spaces. A Regional Geography Of Olancho, Honduras., Mark Andrew Bonta
Mapping Enredos Of Complex Spaces. A Regional Geography Of Olancho, Honduras., Mark Andrew Bonta
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation is a regional geography of the department of Olancho in northeastern Honduras. It focuses on the enredos (entangled situations) that characterize geographic reality, particularly in the interlocked domains of nation-state priorities, local identities, rain forest conservation, and sustainable development. The overarching theoretical framework of this dissertation is the collaborative work of complexity theorists Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. The major theme running through "Mapping Enredos" is the multidimensional nature of spatiality (complex spaces), ground for human and non-human existence as well as source of endless conflicts. Fieldwork was undertaken from 1999 to 2000. Qualitative research methods employed include …
Protecting 'Place' In African -American Neighborhoods: Urban Public Space, Privatization, And Protest In Louis Armstrong Park And The Treme, New Orleans., Michael Eugene Crutcher Jr
Protecting 'Place' In African -American Neighborhoods: Urban Public Space, Privatization, And Protest In Louis Armstrong Park And The Treme, New Orleans., Michael Eugene Crutcher Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the past fifteen years, urban scholars have increasingly studied "the end of public space." Central to their arguments are the thesis that these communal spaces, traditionally held by city governments and theoretically open for use by all citizens, are waning. Much of this space has become "privatized." Corporations and individuals often buy, renovate, and design such spaces either in conjunction with city programs or as part of their urban renewal, gentrification, and development plans. These plans often seek to exclude certain minority groups or target spaces in low-income communities. The process is largely driven by the present need for …
Resorcinol Condensation Products: A New Class Of Colorimetric Sensors For Saccharides., Claude Joseph Davis
Resorcinol Condensation Products: A New Class Of Colorimetric Sensors For Saccharides., Claude Joseph Davis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Resorcinarenes are a unique class of cyclic aromatic tetramers that have been known for over a century. In our laboratories, we have reported the first synthesis, isolation, and characterization of resorcinarenes with arylboronic acid functionality their framework. The physical property studies of our new resorcinarene series resulted in covalent and non-covalent binding studies, which revealed the first evidence chair (c2h) resorcinarenes can compete effectively with their crown (c4v ) counterparts the binding of polar guests (i.e. carbohydrates). In addition, the chiral tetraarylboronate octols have demonstrated potential utility as substrates for stereoselective extractions carbohydrates. A facile method for detecting and monitoring …
Molding Large Area Plastic Parts Covered With Harms., Mircea Stefan Despa
Molding Large Area Plastic Parts Covered With Harms., Mircea Stefan Despa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Injection molding and hot embossing proved to be suitable for use to reproduce layouts of micropatterns manufactured by LIGA. The research work was based on two commercially available machines. Preliminary experiments with both machines indicated that several modifications and additions were necessary to adapt the injection machine and the embossing press for microreplication. For the injection machine, a mold geometry was designed to ensure minimal pressure loss upstream from the entrance into the mold cavity, and optimal shape for molding and demolding. For the hot embossing press, a vacuum chamber was designed containing the embossing sandwich, with the temperatures of …
Factors Affecting Community Structure Of Mangroves Associated With Point Bars And Islands In A Costa Rican Estuary., Patricia Delgado-Sanchez
Factors Affecting Community Structure Of Mangroves Associated With Point Bars And Islands In A Costa Rican Estuary., Patricia Delgado-Sanchez
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
A conceptual model of relationships between mangrove community structure and their physico-chemical environment is developed for point bars and islands in the Tempisque-Bebedero estuarine system, Pacific coast, Costa Rica. The model identifies key variables whose relationships to mangrove forest structure are the focus of extended field and mesocosm studies. Point bars and islands are very dynamic features constantly modified by hydrology and sediment dynamics. In the Tempisque-Bebedero system, they are additionally modified by extensive agricultural activities. High riverine sediment loads, associated with irrigation and seasonal wind-driven resuspension, result in significantly higher sediment deposition in lower intertidal zones; upper intertidal zones …
Active Control Of Thermoacoustical Instabilities., Daniel Ulises Campos-Delgado
Active Control Of Thermoacoustical Instabilities., Daniel Ulises Campos-Delgado
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation presents some advances in active control of thermoacoustic instabilities in combustion chambers. Large-size gaseous and liquid fueled swirl stabilized combustors were used during the studies. Active control was implemented using different types of actuators. Proportional (loudspeakers and fuel valves) and discrete actuators (open-close automotive fuel injectors) were investigated. Acoustic and fuel modulation control were successfully applied. In large-scale combustors, flame stabilization techniques such as swirl add three dimensional characteristics to the flow. Moreover, the induced turbulence creates highly nonlinear interactions in the system. Thus, in order to capture these characteristics nonlinear partial differential equations have to be used. …
Electronic Communication Channels In Franchise Organizations., Michael Hebert Dickey
Electronic Communication Channels In Franchise Organizations., Michael Hebert Dickey
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The virtual organization has emerged as a result of the availability of information technology. One business model well suited to the virtual form is franchising. Since the success of franchise organizations is highly dependent on communication effectiveness, these organizations are beginning to adopt technology---namely, private corporate networks called intranets and extranets---to support electronic communication. This research study examines the effects of electronic communication channels on communication patterns within franchise organizations. First, the study addresses how electronic communication channels affect communication frequency within the franchise organization. Second, the effect of electronic communication channels on strategic outcomes, specifically, innovation, franchisee satisfaction, and …
A Performer's Guide To Theatrical Elements In Selected Trombone Literature., Cason Austin Duke
A Performer's Guide To Theatrical Elements In Selected Trombone Literature., Cason Austin Duke
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In the last forty years, many new solo and chamber pieces have been written for the trombone which involve elements of a theatrical nature, including lighting, make-up, costume, stage direction, dialogue/narration, sound effects, props, and audience interaction. It is difficult for a trombonist searching for music to discern a piece's theatrical nature by its listing in most catalogs. This document has attempted to solve that problem by gathering pieces that share these elements into an annotated collection. Nearly 200 pieces were discovered through contacts made with individual trombonists, composers, and publishers around the world. Of these, over sixty were acquired …
Glyphosate- And Glufosinate -Resistant Technologies: Weed Management And Off-Target Crop Response., Jeffrey Mark Ellis
Glyphosate- And Glufosinate -Resistant Technologies: Weed Management And Off-Target Crop Response., Jeffrey Mark Ellis
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Utility of preemergence soil-applied herbicides at full and half label rates were evaluated in glyphosate-resistant soybean. In most instances, differences in early season weed density and height were not noted when rates were reduced. None of the herbicides provided complete weed control, but some delayed weed growth providing an extra 3 to 7 days before the first postemergence glyphosate application was needed. Based on weed control and soybean yield, use of glyphosate alone was as effective as when preemergence herbicides were followed by glyphosate. In another study, barnyardgrass control with glyphosate at 0.84 and 1.12 kg ai/ha was not antagonized …
Subthreshold Photoionization In Molecular Dopant/Perturber Systems., Cherice Marie Evans
Subthreshold Photoionization In Molecular Dopant/Perturber Systems., Cherice Marie Evans
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The use of atomic and molecular Rydberg states to investigate dopant/perturber interactions is a well established research area. In this Dissertation, photoionization spectroscopy is used to probe the interactions between various dopants (D = CH3I, C2H5I and C6H6) and perturbers (P = Ar, N2, CO2, CF4, c-C4F8 and SF6) in a static gas-phase system. One overall goal is a better understanding of the nature of dopant/perturber interactions in the gas phase which, in turn, can lead to a better understanding of solvation in the condensed phase. Two separate perturber effects are investigated in this work: the perturber-induced energy shift of …
Language And Power In A Louisiana Murder Trial: Discourse Features In Witness Testimony., Kara Lynn Gibson
Language And Power In A Louisiana Murder Trial: Discourse Features In Witness Testimony., Kara Lynn Gibson
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The literature concerning language, law, and power has traditionally focused on the linguistic strategies legal professionals employ for the purpose of controlling the speech of their clients and/or witnesses. However, newer research, stemming from gender-based theories of how power and/or powerlessness is manifest in language, promotes linguistic analyses from the perspective of the disempowered as opposed to the empowered, Such studies claim that speakers' election or avoidance of certain discourse features (e.g., hedges, hypercorrect forms, polite address forms, overlap, quotatives and gestures, etc.) and responses-types (e.g., declarative-context questions, copy responses, fragmented versus narrative responses, etc.) reflects their perceived power as …
Synthetic Peptides: Design, Structure And Biological Function., Lars Gustav Johan Hammarstrom
Synthetic Peptides: Design, Structure And Biological Function., Lars Gustav Johan Hammarstrom
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The synthesis of a series of polyfunctional Calpha,C alpha-disubstituted glycines is described. The lysine-like amino acid analog, Api, was prepared by regioselective hydrolysis of a triBoced hydantoin, followed by Nalpha-protection to yield the first orthogonally protected ionizable Calpha,Calpha-disubstituted amino acid which is alicyclic. The synthesis of three orthogonally protected tetrafunctional amino acids, Bap, Bglu, and Basp was envisioned by alkylation of the organic synthon ethyl nitroacetate. Subsequent regioselective modification should allow for the isolation of the first tetrafunctional amino acid derivatives suitable for solid-phase synthesis. These amino acids are designed to induce peptide secondary structure by salt-bridge stabilization. A series …
