Interest in the fullerenes is due, in large part, to the fact that they represent the third major form of carbon, following graphite and diamond. We have investigated synthetic methods towards the creation of new carbon molecules derived from the fullerenes. The sought-after dimeric carbon fullerene derivative, C122, was successfully synthesized and isolated for the first time in modest yield from a complex reaction mixture. The all-carbon molecular allotrope was prepared via the new reaction of C60 with atomic carbon in solution. Atomic carbon was produced via the known thermolytic decomposition of diazotetrazole. Future work that could emanate from these …

The Influence Of Agricultural Policy On Economic Integration Among Central American Countries: A Game Theoretic Analysis., Jorge Luis Icabalceta Mairena
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The influence of eight commodity groups on international economic integration in five Central American countries are analyzed. The commodity groups are rice, beans, corn, sorghum, bananas, coffee, sugar, and beef. The countries are Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. A game theory framework is used to find a Nash equilibrium solution to a set of trade negotiation scenarios. The payoffs of the Political Preference Function (PPF) are used for the trade liberalization scenarios under analysis. These PPF payoffs are estimated using the MISS model. The nominal protection coefficient (NPC) is used as the main criterion for trade liberalization. …
X -Ray Absorption Fine Structure (Exafs And Xanes) And Microscopic Investigations Of Supramolecular Systems., Pierre Nicolas Floriano

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Self-assembled monolayers of n-alkanethiols, CH3-(CH 2)x-SH, on Au, Ag, and Cu have been studied with Grazing incidence EXAFS (GIXAFS) at the sulfur K-edge. Characterization of the bonding of self-assembled monolayers is of great interest because of their ability to tailor physical and chemical properties of surfaces. For both pentanethiol and decanethiol monolayers on Ag and Cu, the three-fold hollow site is found to be the most probable sulfur binding site. However, observations for octadecanethiol indicate that the three-fold-hollow site is not the exclusive binding site. In addition, the possible existence of disulfide bonds on the metal surface (adsorbed dialkyldisulfides) is …

"Good Friday": A Guide To The Chamber Opera Of Luigi Zaninelli., Maryann Kyle
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Compositions by Mississippi composer Luigi Zaninelli, born in Raritan, New Jersey, on March 30, 1932, have recently reached seven and one-half million copies sold by music publisher Shawnee Press. Although Zaninelli's chorus, band, vocal, and orchestra compositions have received international acclaim, he has only recently begun to compose operatic works. The composer began to explore the world of opera at the urging of his former teacher, the famed Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti. Zaninelli's three operas, Snow White-The Opera (1996), Mr. Sebastian (1997), and Good Friday (1998) represent his first forays into this complex musical idiom. It is the object …
Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Materials By Use Of Nonpolar Matrices In Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Maldi-Ms)., Stephen Francis Macha
Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Materials By Use Of Nonpolar Matrices In Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Maldi-Ms)., Stephen Francis Macha
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In this study, polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds including anthracene, pyrene, acenaphthene and perylene were investigated as nonpolar matrices in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) for the analysis of selected nonpolar analytes. First, the influence of matrix and the analyte ionization potentials on a charge-transfer ionization mechanism were determined. Results of these studies demonstrated that formation of radical molecular cations in MALDI-MS depends on the ionization energy difference between the matrix and the analyte. Charge-transfer ionization occurs only when the ionization potential of the matrix is higher than that of the analyte. Next, nonpolar matrices were investigated for the analysis of …
Benthic Foraminifera In Two Stressed Environments Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico., Emil Platon
Benthic Foraminifera In Two Stressed Environments Of The Northern Gulf Of Mexico., Emil Platon
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This is a study of Foraminifera from two stressed environments of the northern Gulf of Mexico: one of coastal seasonal hypoxia, the other of hydrocarbon seeps in bathyal depths---oxygen depletion being the common stressor. Many species of benthic Foraminifera survive the extreme oxygen depletion of Louisiana shelf waters in spring and summer. The dominant species are infaunal and have an adaptive tolerance to near anoxia or anoxia. A census of foraminiferal species present in dated sediment core samples reveals significant changes in the composition of the Louisiana-shelf benthic foraminiferal community in the past century. Agglutinated and porcelaneous orders living in …

Shell Model Description Of Normal Parity Bands In Heavy Deformed Nuclei., Gabriela Popa
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The low-energy spectra and electromagnetic transition strengths in 160,162,164Dy, 156,158,160Gd, and 168Er are described in the framework of the pseudo-SU(3) model. The Hamiltonian includes spherical single-particle energies, the Quadrupole-quadrupole interaction, and proton and neutron pairing terms with the strengths of these interaction fixed from systematics. The strengths of an additional four rotor-like terms that are included in the Hamiltonian, which do not mix SU(3) representations and induce only small changes in the spectra, were allowed to vary and a consistent set of these parameters was found. Proton and neutron degrees of freedom are considered explicitly by building the basis states …

Worldly Rites: The Social And Political Significance Of Religious Services In Louisiana, 1803--1865., Julia Huston Nguyen
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
In antebellum and Civil War Louisiana, religious rituals contained more than spiritual meaning. They also carried social and political significance that can illustrate a great deal about that society. Sabbath services, holidays, revivals, baptisms, weddings, and funerals all reflected the values that Louisianans believed to be important. By looking at religion and the ways that residents of Louisiana experienced it, not only on a daily basis but also during the major milestones of life, one can come to a greater understanding of the ways in which they structured their society and interacted with it. Through an examination of Louisiana religion, …

Women And The Law Of Property Under Louisiana Civil Law, 1782--1835., Sara Jane Brooks Sundberg
Women And The Law Of Property Under Louisiana Civil Law, 1782--1835., Sara Jane Brooks Sundberg
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation explores the influence of Louisiana civil law on women's property ownership between 1782 and 1835. Louisiana civil law offered women significant advantages over the predominant common law tradition found in most early American states. Louisiana civil law, unlike common law, allowed a married woman to retain her legal identity, her personal property and her right to monetary rewards from her labors within the family. A woman in early Louisiana owned half the property accumulated during marriage and she inherited her half of the property at the dissolution of the marriage. She also owned and could administer separate property. …

Systemic And Colonic Hemodynamic And Vasomotor Responses To Adenosine Triphosphate In Horses., Joanne Tetens
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Clinically healthy horses were instrumented to measure hemodynamic, metabolic, hematologic, and serum biochemical variables and monitor clinical signs during and after IV infusion of ATP-MgCl2. Conscious horses were administered ATP-MgCl2 (0.05 mg ATP/kg body weight/min; 0.05 mg/kg/min increments; maximum rate-1.0 mg/kg/min), which caused a rate-dependent increase in cardiac output, decrease in systemic vascular resistance, and mild pulmonary hypertension. The maximal safe infusion rate was 0.3 mg ATP/kg body weight/min. Anesthetized horses administered ATP-MgCl2 (0.1 to 1 mg/kg/min; 0.1 mg/kg/min increments) developed a rate-dependent decrease in systemic and colonic vascular resistance via vasodilatation. In conscious horses administered lowdose endotoxin, ATP-MgCl2 (dose-100 …

Medical Image Set Compression Using Wavelet And Lifting Combined With New Scanning Techniques., Rahman Tashakkori
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Today, hospitals are desirous of better methods for replacing their traditional film-based medical imaging. A major problem associated with a "film-less hospital" is the amount of digital image data that is generated and stored. Image compression must be used to reduce the storage size. This dissertation presents several techniques involving wavelet analysis, lifting, image prediction and image scanning to achieve an efficient diagnostically lossless compression for sets of medical images. This dissertation experimentally determines the optimal wavelet basis for medical images. Then, presents a new wavelet based prediction method for prediction of the intermediate images in a similar set of …

Red Morningglory (Ipomoea Coccinea L.) And Sugarcane Response To Soil-Applied Herbicides., Blaine Joseph Viator
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Laboratory and greenhouse studies were conducted to determine if reported red morningglory (Ipomoea coccinea L.) control failures with atrazine in sugarcane are due to triazine-resistant mutants. Terminal fluorescence of leaf material from locations with and without a history of atrazine use increased after treatment with atrazine, indicating electron transport inhibition and hence, triazine susceptibility. Postemergence (POST) application of atrazine controlled plants from all populations at least 99%, supporting findings of the fluorescence assay. A field study was conducted to evaluate red morningglory control and sugarcane injury with herbicides applied at layby. At 45 days after treatment (DAT), control with sulfentrazone …
Center Vortices In Confinement., Viorel-Andrei Alexandru
Center Vortices In Confinement., Viorel-Andrei Alexandru
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The confinement property of quarks is still one of the puzzles of today's physics. Although QCD is believed to accurately describe the interaction between quarks, due to the peculiar nature of the theory we are still unable to prove that it confines the quarks. Most analytical efforts in QCD are based on perturbative techniques which are useless in studying confinement. Lattice gauge theory enables us to get non-perturbative results. We use lattice techniques to investigate one of the proposed mechanisms of quark confinement, namely the center vortex idea. We first present a cursory introduction to lattice theory and the methods …

Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Ultra-Thin Metal Epitaxy On Metal And Semiconductor Surfaces., Dustin Alexander Hite
Atomic And Electronic Structure Of Ultra-Thin Metal Epitaxy On Metal And Semiconductor Surfaces., Dustin Alexander Hite
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The fundamental study of heteroepitaxy has proved to have profound influences on technological applications of thin films, particularly due to the reduced dimensionality and quantum mechanical effects found in these unique nanostructured systems. In this study, particular attention is given to the correlations between atomic-scale morphology and the consequential electronic structure of heteroepitaxial systems that exhibit deviations from traditional growth modes in the initial stages of growth. Surface-confined systems are especially interesting because they exhibit properties that are fundamentally different from the bulk and often have no bulk analogs existing in nature. The surface-sensitive techniques of variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy …

Wavelet Analysis And Classification Of Urban Environment Using High -Resolution Multispectral Image Data., Soe Win Myint
Wavelet Analysis And Classification Of Urban Environment Using High -Resolution Multispectral Image Data., Soe Win Myint
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Attempts to analyze urban features and classify land use and land cover directly from high-resolution satellite data with traditional computer classification techniques have proven to be inefficient. The fundamental problem usually found in identifying urban land cover types from high-resolution satellite imagery is that urban areas are composed of diverse materials (metal, glass, concrete, asphalt, plastic, trees, soil, etc.). These materials, each of which may have completely different spectral characteristics, are combined in complex ways by human beings. Hence, each urban land cover type may contain several different objects with different reflectance values. Noisy appearance with lots of edges, and …

Breaking The Silence: Toward An Understanding Of Speaking Up In The Workplace., Sonya Fontenot Premeaux
Breaking The Silence: Toward An Understanding Of Speaking Up In The Workplace., Sonya Fontenot Premeaux
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Although management scholars and practitioners emphasize the importance of employee input to organizational success, research suggests that many workers are hesitant to express an opinion or voice a view because they fear repercussions. In this dissertation, I focus on the issue of employee workplace expression, introducing the concept of speaking up. I define speaking up as "openly stating one's views or opinions about workplace issues." Speaking up is distinguished from several related concepts that fall within a common construct space. Drawing on expectancy theory (Vroom, 1964) and the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen, 1988, 1991), I explain the process believed …
