Essential Oils Reduction Of Dementia-Related Behavior Disturbances: A Case Study And Literature Review, Dawn L. Langley-Brady

In 2015, over 9 million people were diagnosed with dementia worldwide. Dementia can be accompanied by aggression or violent behavior intractable to standard treatment (e.g. Seroquel). In one case study, essential oils reduced aggressive behavior within 20 minutes of application. This case study and literature review will be discussed.

Preventing Pressure Injury In Adults Presenting To The Emergency Department By Ambulance, Paul Fulbrook, Sandra Miles, Fiona Coyer

Pressure injury prevention in the ambulance and emergency department has not been well explored. This study identified 5% prevalence on ambulance arrival, with very little preventative intervention implemented in the ambulance or emergency department. In these settings, it is concluded that pressure-relieving surfaces should be implemented for all at-risk patients.

Intentional hourly patient rounding has re-emerged as a standard practice initiative to promote safety and improved quality care. Dental caries affects disadvantaged infants and children worldwide. An evaluation of parent's oral health beliefs and behaviors and education was provided during nutrition program visits for high risk families. This simple education intervention positively impacted parent's oral health behaviors which could ultimately impact oral health outcomes of vulnerable populations.

As part of an Ambulatory Care Nursing course, BSN students had an opportunity for clinical experience in a Nurse Practitioner-led clinic that serves refugee and immigrant clients. They gained experience in primary care nursing with specific cultural implications, and observed the challenges in sustaining a clinic for underserved populations.

Collaboration between a school of nursing and a school district was undertaken to meet state mandated health screenings for 27 schools and 7,000 school children. BSN and MSN nursing students were certified as screeners, providing valuable clinical and service-learning experiences. A telehealth school screening protocol will be discussed.

Co-mentoring in leader dyads institute mutually beneficial learning relationships. This leader dyad leveraged co-mentoring to increase first year nurse retention by 47% and reduce patient harm by 60% while enhancing purpose and excellence within their clinical team.
