Happiness And Satisfaction : Subjective Well-Being In The Work Force, Lori J. Sohns Jan 1991

Happiness And Satisfaction : Subjective Well-Being In The Work Force, Lori J. Sohns

Honors Theses

Workers from seven southeastern companies (80 subjects) completed surveys consisting of demographic information and subjective well-being (SWB) indicators. Results indicate significantly lower life satisfaction in females than in males; income level and education do not show significant positive relationships with happiness, however, total household income does; and a statistically significant positive relationship between job satisfaction and general satisfaction were found and were strongest in males. Correlations between six of the SWB measures revealed highly significant correlations between five of the measures. A multiple regression analysis of satisfaction and happiness revealed several variables which were predictive of these constructs.

Alientation And Internal-External Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Student Political Participation, Joanne M. Miller Jan 1991

Alientation And Internal-External Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Student Political Participation, Joanne M. Miller

Honors Theses

Seventy-two undergraduates (ages 18-23) from The University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University participated in this study to examine the potential predictors for student political participation. After methodological problems of past research - such as the confounding of activism and ideology and the specific focus on activism in the 1960's - were corrected, Dean's (1961) Alienation scale, Rotter's (1966) Internal-External Locus of Control scale, and Olsen's (1969) Alienation scale were used to predict political activity levels, as measured by Kerpelman's (1972) Activity scale. A stepwise multiple regression procedure showed that futility (a subscale of Olsen's Alienation scale) was the only …

The Effect Of Live Music Versus Tape-Recorded Music On Participation Rates Of Two Populations, Sara F. Flink Oct 1990

The Effect Of Live Music Versus Tape-Recorded Music On Participation Rates Of Two Populations, Sara F. Flink

Honors Theses

For a number of years, differences have existed in the training of music therapists. In some countries, music therapists are trained first and foremost as musicians, and secondly as therapists. Other countries allow music therapy to be practiced by music psychologists, physicians, or educators. Both sides employ varying arguments. Bunt (1988) feels that therapists are either experienced musicians with minimal training in developmental, therapeutic skills, or experienced clinicians lacking in many areas of musical expertise. Bunt further delineates between the two schools of thought by describing how one music therapist may use improvisation to interact with a client and his …

Spin Training For Pilots - Necessity Or Irrationality?, Richard Hall Aug 1990

Spin Training For Pilots - Necessity Or Irrationality?, Richard Hall

Honors Theses

Throughout the history of aviation, stall/spin accidents have claimed the lives of brave men and women who dared to attempt flight. Over the years, much debate has occurred over the spin phenomenon, with the FAA and the NTSB taking opposite sides about the necessity or irrationality of training America's aviators in spin recovery. This ATS 350 project will focus on the effectiveness of current legislation concerning private and commercial pilot license applicants. The requirements for said licenses, specifically the nonexistence of mandatory spin training for the applicants, will be examined and evaluated. The resultant outcome will hopefully be a standing …

19th Century German Immigration To America: Paul Müller's Search For A Better Way Of Life, Tina Marie Schrader

Honors Theses

From the 17th century up until 1890, individuals of German ethnic origin outnumbered immigrants from any other country to America. These immigrants to the United States had contributed greatly to the economic growth of this country and to many of the traditions and customs still celebrated today. One emigrant of German ethnic origin, Paul Müller, chose to seek this land of new opportunity in 1862 with his large and growing family. As a descendent of Paul Müller, I have taken an interest in his life in the Old Country and in America, including the area he finally chose to call …

The Effects Of Locus Of Control And Death Education On Death Attitudes, Lydia A. Williams May 1990

The Effects Of Locus Of Control And Death Education On Death Attitudes, Lydia A. Williams

Honors Theses

The relationship of locus of control and death education on death attitudes was examined across a population of college students. Students beginning a death education course, students finishing a death education course, and mortuary science students, completed Rotter's I-E scale, Hardt's Death Attitude Scale, and questions on personal beliefs. No significant difference of death attitude was found between the three groups, although internality was found to be significantly correlated to favorable death attitude. Statistical analysis did not support the hypothesis that death education positively affects death attitudes, however, the data do reveal that those individuals with an internal locus of …

Why Popular Election Should Be Selected Over The Merit Plan Method Of Judicial Selection, Michael P. Ruiz May 1990

Why Popular Election Should Be Selected Over The Merit Plan Method Of Judicial Selection, Michael P. Ruiz

Honors Theses

Judicial selection through the process of popular election, while not a perfect instrument, provides a higher degree of accountability and achieves the same level of "independence" from political forces as the merit plan. Moreover, the popular election process is more consistent with the overlying theme of a participatory democracy dictated by the founding fathers and implemented by following generations.

Attitudes Toward The Non-Traditional Male Role, Angela R. Scherrer May 1990

Attitudes Toward The Non-Traditional Male Role, Angela R. Scherrer

Honors Theses

Attitudes about the non-traditional male role, defined as participation in housework and childcare, and willingness to accept financial assistance from a woman, were investigated. Sex-role identification (determined by the Bem Sex-Role Inventory) and involvement in a serious relationship with a woman were examined as possible factors influencing attitudes about the non-traditional male role. Two hypotheses were investigated and supported: (1) Men in a serious relationship have more positive attitudes toward the non-traditional male role than men not in a serious relationship, and (2) For sex-role identification, feminine men have more positive attitudes about the non-traditional male role than masculine men, …

A Tear In The Fabric: Conflict And Labor Relations In The Chattanooga Textile Industry, 1917, John A. Stern

Honors Theses

Local industrial textile workers began to react during World War I to the injustices that had been growing in the local textile industry since the 1890's when the factory system started to dominate Chattanooga's textile production. By May, 1917, the city's textile workers became aware of the social gap that had been evolving under the new manufacturing system and determined to lessen it by unionizing under the leadership of the United Textile Workers of America, an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor.

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe Apr 1990

The Appeals Of Athletic Shoe Advertisements To Teens, Shari Lynn Tayloe

Honors Theses

Studying the structure and the effectiveness of ads can suggest how and why advertisers' commercials appeal to consumers. Narrowing this study down to one medium-television, one product--athletic shoes, and one audience-teenagers, can better identify commercials' appeals and their effectiveness. The study of television athletic shoe advertisements, as viewed by teenagers, provides primary data about both the ads themselves and about their appeals to the 15- to 18-year-old audience.

Leveller Democracy : Political Theory And Political Reality, Hilary B. Smith Apr 1990

Leveller Democracy : Political Theory And Political Reality, Hilary B. Smith

Honors Theses

Dissatisfaction with English monarchy resulted in civil war and victory for the forces opposed to the royalists. Rather than forming a decisive conclusion, the triumph of the New Model Army was a prelude to a period of conflict and confusion. Those who acted against the King wanted a new system of government, but there was little agreement as to the form it should take. Between 1646 and 1649, individuals advocating democratic changes in the political system, referred to as Levellers by their enemies, organized, and influenced political events. In order to understand the Levellers' rise to prominence and later failure …

The Changing Roles Of Women In The People's Republic Of China, Priya Helweg Apr 1990

The Changing Roles Of Women In The People's Republic Of China, Priya Helweg

Honors Theses

The present Chinese government has persistently claimed that women have been completely emancipated through the enforcement of Communist ideology. In spite of the claim that women in modern China 'hold up half the sky' traditional beliefs continue to influence the position of women in contemporary China. As a consequence, women in the People's Republic of China — especially students — find themselves in a situation of confusing contradictions and frustrating obstacles. Traditional ideologies, as seen in the patriarchal kinship structure and the economic and political systems, aid rather than hinder the present government as it maintains a similar relation to …

Gesturing In An Interview Situation : Effects Of Gender, Renee R. Tillinger Jan 1990

Gesturing In An Interview Situation : Effects Of Gender, Renee R. Tillinger

Honors Theses

Subjects observed a prerecorded job interview of a male or a female applicant whose gesturing was either broad (hands/arms moving away from the body), narrow (hands/arms moving close to the body), or not used (hands folded on lap). Subjects then completed evaluations on the applicant and the type of gesturing used. Results suggest that in placing individuals in jobs, women stereotype both men and women according to the type of gesturing used. Men, on the other hand, stereotype only men according to the type of gesturing used, but stereotyped women regardless of the type of gesturing used. Implications of this …
