Particle Size And Velocity Measurements In Two Phase Flows Using Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Joseph Parker Jan 1992

Particle Size And Velocity Measurements In Two Phase Flows Using Laser Doppler Velocimetry, Joseph Parker

Honors Theses

Laser Doppler Velocimetry is used in fluid mechanics to measure the velocity of particles in fluid flows. A small particle exhibits motion closely corresponding to the fluid behavior because of its ability to follow high frequency flow fluctuations. Large particles do not follow the flow field precisely but represent a second phase. This project used LDV to measure the size and velocity of particles in two phase flows by computer analysis of the Doppler signal.

Soybean Tolerance To Simulated Drift Rates Of Accent And Beacon, John A. Bailey Dec 1991

Soybean Tolerance To Simulated Drift Rates Of Accent And Beacon, John A. Bailey

Honors Theses

Accent and Beacon, both recently labeled postemergent corn herbicides, were applied at ' simulated' drift rates to soybeans at the V3 and R1 development stages. Drift rates were simulated by applying 10 to 50% of the respective labeled rate for each herbicide. Injury was more evident at the V3 stage than at the R1 stage for both herbicides. Injury caused by Beacon was significantly greater than with Accent for both applications, and appears to be a considerable threat for high-risk drift situations when applied near soybeans. Each herbicide exhibited specific, characteristic symptoms of injury that clearly coincided with increases in …

Any Questions: An Examination Of Public Service Advertising And The Psychological Factors Affecting It, Kristine E. Kranenburg

Honors Theses

An examination of public service advertising (PSA), and some factors affecting it, was made. Psychological topics important to public service advertising, such as: attitude change, motives, and personality traits were reviewed. The impact of four communication variables, source, message, channel and receiver, were also examined. Finally, examples of successful PSA campaigns were analyzed. Recommendations to improve the effectiveness of future public service advertising were made.

The Effects Of Perceived Consequences On Ethical Decisions, Eldean Gwen Cornish Nov 1991

The Effects Of Perceived Consequences On Ethical Decisions, Eldean Gwen Cornish

Honors Theses

Increasing public awareness of ethics in business, or a lack thereof, has inspired an abundance of study, research and a variety of theories regarding ethics and has encouraged many firms and associations to establish corporate and professional codes of ethics. This thesis begins with a literature review surrounding the definition of ethics and ethical decision-making behavior. The Theory of Reasoned Action model designed by Fishbein and Ajzen (1975) proposed a linkage of external variables and an individual's behavioral intention (Randall, 1989), the theory being that change is ultimately a result of changes in beliefs. Tests to predict behavior suffer from …

Student's Perceptions And Experiences Of Sexual Harassment At The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Wendy W. Davis Nov 1991

Student's Perceptions And Experiences Of Sexual Harassment At The University Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Wendy W. Davis

Honors Theses

This research was conducted to examine students' perceptions and experiences of sexual harassment in higher education. The study was designed and administered in such a way as to address four concerns which have not been effectively handled in previous studies. These specific concerns are as follows: (a) the nonrandom selection of students, (b) the exclusion of males in samples, (c) the limited number of research methods used, and (d) the lack of a standardized definition for sexual harassment. The first three issues focus on the need to obtain representative samples of the college population.

The Feasibility Of Foamed Ink Use In Flexographic Printing, Anthony Malerich May 1991

The Feasibility Of Foamed Ink Use In Flexographic Printing, Anthony Malerich

Honors Theses

Flexographic and rotogravure printing are two of the three predominant printing processes; the other is offset lithography. They are very similar in that they each transfer a very fluid, low viscosity ink from an ink fountain to an engraved cylinder. Foamed ink is a completely water based liquid ink that is foamed by the introduction of air at press side, and presents numerous advantages over conventional organic solvent based and water based inks. The prime advantage is that foamed inks are a completely aqueous, environmentally safe system. Another benefit is the cost savings associated with foamed ink. Ink consumption is …

Preparing A Budget For The Small Hospital, Janice Buerger May 1991

Preparing A Budget For The Small Hospital, Janice Buerger

Honors Theses

Team work should be utilized in developing an annual financial budget. The projection of the financial outlook for each department can usually be made by department heads since they are responsible for the daily operation of their unit. Their involvement normally produces less variances from the budget. These forecasts, after input and careful scrutiny by the administration, can provide important information in developing an overall financial budget for the hospital.

A budget is a formal written statement of a hospital's plan for the future. The financial budget is a management control tool normally covering a one year period. The essentials …

The U.S. Protectorate In Panama: An Analysis Of Recent U.S.-Panamanian Relations With Specific Reference To Operation Just Cause (December, 1989), Karen Cherese Nelson

Honors Theses

This paper will address the 1989 invasion in terms of the historical relationship existing between the two nation-states, that of U.S. as protector and Panama as protectorate. The writer's intent is to demonstrate that this relationship has resulted in a de facto loss of sovereign control by Panama and, as a result, continues to constitute a breach of international law.

Comparing And Contrasting Lonely And Nonlonely People By Examining Attachment Patterns And Measuring Ratings Of Rules And Goals, Deborah L. Wallace May 1991

Comparing And Contrasting Lonely And Nonlonely People By Examining Attachment Patterns And Measuring Ratings Of Rules And Goals, Deborah L. Wallace

Honors Theses

The present study sought to explore the nature of loneliness and distinguish differences between lonely and nonlonely individuals with respect to attachment styles and various goals and rules in five separate social situations. The validity of one loneliness measure is questioned, and the subscale of another loneliness measure that was intended for use with adults was found to have possible applications with a younger population. A total of 114 subjects (75 males and 39 females) completed six questionnaires: three loneliness, two attachment, and one goals and rules in social situations which was developed by the author. Results indicated that lonely …

Buddhist Rebirth: A Survey Of Pre-Modern Asian Thought, Tiffany L. Severns May 1991

Buddhist Rebirth: A Survey Of Pre-Modern Asian Thought, Tiffany L. Severns

Honors Theses

In an attempt to display the range of concerns and interests regarding rebirth, I plan to make a brief and sampled survey of a few select schools and sects of Buddhism. More emphasis will be placed on Indian Buddhism as it was here that much of the debates raged and were settled for the descendant forms of Buddhism in other parts of the globe, namely China and Japan. Special consideration will be given, however, to Tibetan and Pure Land schools as their understandings of or interest in rebirth vary significantly from that of traditional Indic-Buddhist views. While contemporary scholars, particularly …

The Legislator's Paradox, Jim P. Mollette May 1991

The Legislator's Paradox, Jim P. Mollette

Honors Theses

This examination of the legislative process will specifically deal with the role of the legislator, the nature of representation, and the legislator's relationship with constituents. By utilizing different readings and practical participation, the role constituents play in determining or affecting the decisions of the legislator and the legislator's political roles will be analyzed. Ultimately, a legislator faces a paradox in respect to the type of representative and political roles he or she chooses.

A Critique Of The Southern Baptist Sunday School's Attitude Toward Children Based On Current And Historical Analyses, Amy Joyner Apr 1991

A Critique Of The Southern Baptist Sunday School's Attitude Toward Children Based On Current And Historical Analyses, Amy Joyner

Honors Theses

Sunday School, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. For some, Sunday School elicits a host of positive memories and current images: playing games, making bread, singing songs, coloring, reciting memory verses, studying Scripture, enjoying refreshments, talking with friends, laughing and sharing. For others, Sunday School is simply a waste of time. In fact, in 1957 Life magazine labeled Sunday School ''the most wasted hour of the week." It seems that more and more Americans in recent decades have agreed with this pronouncement, for Sunday School attendance among mainline denominations has continued to drop at a steady rate. …

Inventory Ordering Decisions Over The Product Life Cycle, Matthew J. Seiler Apr 1991

Inventory Ordering Decisions Over The Product Life Cycle, Matthew J. Seiler

Honors Theses

This report will link two key business concepts together. It will first examine the characteristics of different inventory replenishment systems used by purchasing managers. Second, it will bring the marketing phenomenon of the product life cycle into the picture. The varying demand patterns found in a typical product life cycle curve will become test data for a simulation exercise to determine which of four ordering models yield the lowest combination of holding and ordering costs. The costs related to holding finished good inventories account for a large portion of a firm's total cost structure (Adam and Ebert, 1989). To stay …

A Re-Evaluation Of The Aesthetics Of Jean-Baptiste Dubos And Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, John Grayson Nichols Jan 1991

A Re-Evaluation Of The Aesthetics Of Jean-Baptiste Dubos And Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, John Grayson Nichols

Honors Theses

Horace did remark "ut pictura poesis," as in painting so

poetry. But the rest of the pronouncement, rarely quoted, - "one

work seizes your fancy if you stand close to it, another if you

stand at a distance" - refers to how the arts can been viewed

from similar angles, not that the arts are essentially created

with the same purposes. Yet, misreadings of that quotation

began a history of debate over the qualities of painting and

poetry. In particular the eighteenth century became a

battleground over the ut pictura poesis formula. To the modern

reader, this controversy may seem …

The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen Jan 1991

The Empire Strikes Out? A Look At The Nationalities Crisis In The Soviet Union, Catherine E. Breen

Honors Theses

My thesis rests on the notion that, because of the increase of freedoms in the Soviet Union today, many republics are demanding that their autonomy be restored and that this nationality crisis, an unforeseen and unwanted byproduct of recent reforms, has grown into such a disaster that it is now actually impairing the whole reform movement in the Soviet Union as civil unrest and strife are beginning to threaten the stability of this huge empire.

Ethnic identity is not something that can be hidden, changed, forced, or converted, nor will national and cultural roots simply disappear over time. Thus, the …

False Hopes: The United States Senate And Campaign Finance Reform 1980-1990, James Heimbach Jan 1991

False Hopes: The United States Senate And Campaign Finance Reform 1980-1990, James Heimbach

Honors Theses

The cost of winning a seat in the United States Senate has risen dramatically over the last ten years. It has become the norm rather than the exception to spend over $1 million on a campaign. For example, in the 34 Senate races in the 1988 election, 32 campaigns spent over $1 million. Due to the necessity to raise more and more money, candidates have had to turn to alternative sources of campaign funds. Thus, the rise in campaign costs has been accompanied by a rise in the role of the political action committee (PAC). PACs are special interest groups …

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Hydrogen Peroxide In The Equatorial Pacific Ocean, Renee Blanchard Jan 1991

Spatial And Temporal Distribution Of Hydrogen Peroxide In The Equatorial Pacific Ocean, Renee Blanchard

Honors Theses

The concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the Equatorial Pacific was determined fluorometrically using the horseradish peroxidase catalyzed dimerization of (p-hydroxyphenyl)acetic acid. Vertical profiles were obtained between 9 ON and 3 oS on a longitudinal transect along 140 oW during June and July of 1990 on the RN Wecoma. Peroxide concentrations ranged from 25-80 nmol/L at the surface and decreased to the detection limit of 1 nmol/L at a depth of about 200 meters. Diel variations of hydrogen peroxide in the surface waters were observed over the period of 8 days. The variation in surface concentration may be attributed to the …

The Benefits Of Women's Education : Warming Up A Cold College Climate For Women Undergraduates, Shannon Riley Jan 1991

The Benefits Of Women's Education : Warming Up A Cold College Climate For Women Undergraduates, Shannon Riley

Honors Theses

The existence of sex discrimination in American college classrooms, and the harmful effects of such discrimination on women students have been well established. The present study sought to determine if exposure to women's education could aid students in overcoming some of these deleterious effects. Twenty-eight female introductory psychology students and eleven women's studies students read various pieces of research and discussed the readings in experimental sessions. The introductory psychology students in the control group were educated about various well documented gender differences, while the introductory psychology and women's studies students in the experimental groups learned about sex discrimination in college …
