Evaluating Data Management Practices And Ontology Development For Transportation Safety Assets, Brig Dean Adams
Evaluating Data Management Practices And Ontology Development For Transportation Safety Assets, Brig Dean Adams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Data has begun to permeate transportation agencies, with every process, asset, and event generating a great volume of data. This data helps engineers and decision makers determine maintenance schedules, devise infrastructure investment strategies, improve safety, and plan for future needs. Due to the size of transportation agencies and the diversity of the data they collect, their data is often stored in different systems, managed by different groups, and described using inconsistent terminology. These challenges make it difficult to locate information, combine data from multiple sources, and confidently use data to support important decisions.
This research examined how transportation safety asset …
Causal Discovery In Photospheric Magnetic Field Time Series For Interpretable Solar Flare Prediction, Nathan W. Nelson
Causal Discovery In Photospheric Magnetic Field Time Series For Interpretable Solar Flare Prediction, Nathan W. Nelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
Solar flares are capable of damaging many valuable resources, including satellites, power grids, and even human lives. Being able to predict solar flares can allow for proactive measures to be taken that can prevent that damage. Many new deep learning methods for predicting solar flares have shown promise in this task, but the decisions they make are harder to explain to humans. This makes understanding why these models make mistakes difficult, which in turn makes fixing and maintaining them more challenging. We test a recent deep learning method that helps discover relationships between different measurements of the Sun as they …

Graph Perturbation Analysis For Subgraph Counting, Hanhua Xiao, Yuchen Li, Kyriakos Mouratidis
Graph Perturbation Analysis For Subgraph Counting, Hanhua Xiao, Yuchen Li, Kyriakos Mouratidis
PhD Student’s Publications Collection
Subgraph counting, which involves determining the frequency of a query graph within a data graph, has numerous applications such as query optimization, fraud detection, and evaluating the expressiveness of graph neural networks. Despite its importance, there has been no systematic study on the impact of adversarial graph perturbations on subgraph counts. In this work, we examine the kSub problem, which aims to identify k edge additions that maximize the count of a query graph. We prove that kSub is intractable due to its NP-hardness, even for constant approximation. To address this, we relax the problem into a top-k selection, termed …
Parental Engagement For Students With Disabilities In Online Learning, Misty A. Benson
Parental Engagement For Students With Disabilities In Online Learning, Misty A. Benson
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
Parental engagement for online students with disabilities is critical for their learning success (Tundle et al., 2016). When parents are actively engaged in online learning, their children experience positive learner outcomes (Smith et. al., 2016). Research indicates that students with disabilities are rapidly transitioning to fully online learning, with parents playing an active role as their learning instructors. The implication for parents who choose to enroll their children with disabilities in online learning is greater parental engagement in their child's learning.
"Always Online, Never At Ease: Fear Of Missing Out (Fomo) As A Partial Mediator Between Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) And Physical Health, Psychological Functioning, And Psychosocial Adjustment Among College Students", Evelyn Pensamiento
Psychological Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events, such as abuse, neglect, and household disruption, that occur during the first 18 years of life. ACEs have been found to be strongly linked to negative outcomes, such as poor physical health, poor mental health, low self-esteem, low emotion regulation, poor college adjustment, low life satisfaction, and low social connectedness, and high loneliness (Felitti et al., 1998; Carbonell et al., 2018; Cloitre et al., 2019; Mosley-Johnson et al., 2018; Yayan et al., 2019). Previous literature suggests that fear of missing out (FoMO) may help explain some of the negative consequences of ACEs …

Validating Valuation: How Statistical Learning Can Cabin Expert Discretion In Valuation Disputes, Andrew C. Baker, Jonah B. Gelbach, Eric L. Talley
Faculty Scholarship
This article challenges conventional methods used in financial valuation across transactional and litigation domains. We show that conventional valuation methods allow for considerable discretion, making it possible for each side’s experts to submit dramatically varying valuations simply by choosing among facially reasonable values of parameters that must be selected to carry out conventional valuations. We use large-scale empirical simulations powered by real-world data to demonstrate the scope of such discretion. We next consider several alternatives based on data-driven machine learning approaches, and show that they offer both approximately unbiased estimates of valuation and substantially reduced variability in valuation results. Consequently, …

The Invisible Work: On Expertise, Showmanship, And The Trust That Makes Surgery Work, Anish Gupta D.D.S.
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
This commentary examines how clinicians can make their expertise more visible to patients through communication, education, and clinical narration. Drawing parallels to surgical checklists and professional mastery, the author argues that trust is built not only through excellent outcomes but also through helping patients understand the complexity and judgment behind treatment. The article emphasizes communication, transparency, education, and mentorship as important elements of patient-centered care.

An Update On The Role Of Multimodal Analgesia In Perioperative Pain Management, Whitney N. Kuwamoto, Grace C. Eddy, Edward R. Mariano, Eric S. Schwenk
Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers
Multimodal analgesia has become a foundational principle of acute perioperative pain management and enhanced recovery and involves the application of nonpharmacologic, pharmacologic, and/or interventional techniques. The overall goal of this approach is to apply a combination of different modalities that target discrete points along the pain pathway and thereby avoid the overreliance on opioids and associated side effects. Since our review in 2018, there have been significant developments that have prompted an updated review of multimodal analgesia. In this article, we identify and summarize important trends that influence the current approach to acute perioperative pain management as well as provide …

Entry Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Capstone Projects Class of 2026
Mothers experiencing homelessness face challenges related to chronic stress, trauma, disrupted routines, and limited access to supportive resources, all of which negatively impact health, well-being, and occupational participation (Anderson et al., 2024). Occupational therapy is uniquely positioned to address these challenges through occupation-based, trauma-informed interventions that promote resilience, empowerment, and engagement in meaningful activities. This doctoral capstone addressed these complex needs through a multifaceted approach that included a scoping review, program development, advocacy, and educational initiatives. A scoping review examined stress-management interventions supporting single mothers experiencing homelessness in the United States. Although positive outcomes were reported, the literature revealed limited …
State Medicaid Expansion And Mental Health In The Poorest States: Examining Differences In States That Expanded Medicaid Compared To Those Which Did Not, Steven Kyle Yates
State Medicaid Expansion And Mental Health In The Poorest States: Examining Differences In States That Expanded Medicaid Compared To Those Which Did Not, Steven Kyle Yates
Master's Theses
Medicaid expansion is a contentious issue in U. S. political debates, especially regarding its impact on public health outcomes. The Republican Party often shows hesitation to support government funding initiatives, citing concerns about creating dependency on entitlement programs like Medicaid. As a result, state legislatures have significant authority to shape their Medicaid programs, including setting eligibility requirements and defining the scope of benefits and services. In this study, I examine disparities in mental health indicators between economically disadvantaged states that expanded Medicaid and those that did not expand Medicaid. The dependent variables include medical costs, measured by how often individuals …

Egyptian Suite: Compositional Reflections, Jeremy Fisher Jacobus
Master's Theses
Egyptian Suite is an original composition for concert wind ensemble that takes example and inspiration from what others believe was Ancient Egyptian music, with some of today’s examples of Egyptian music. This work is divided into four movements: The Nile, The Pharaoh’s Festival, The Pyramids, The Grand Coronation, with each movement representing personal interpretation of each idea with the instrumentation, and the changes in texture, color and rhythm. With each movement of the Egyptian suite, I evaluated instruments being used as additional colors and textures, used more non-conventional key signatures modulations and time signature changes, and utilized a diverse and …

Differential Effects Of Generative Artificial Intelligence On Formative And Summative Assessment Performance: A Quasi-Experimental Longitudinal Study, Md Istiak Morsalin
Master's Theses
Generative artificial intelligence has unsettled a core assumption of course assessment: that scores on unsupervised work reflect what students can do unassisted. This study tests whether the widespread availability of ChatGPT altered student performance differently on formative versus summative assessments in Business Analytics and Foundations, a required undergraduate quantitative-methods course taught by one instructor across nine cohorts. In a quasi-experimental longitudinal design, the Fall~2022 cohort ($n = 90$), the last to finish before ChatGPT's public release, serves as a control against eight post-ChatGPT cohorts spanning Spring~2023 through Summer~2025 ($N = 646$). Outcomes were drawn from McGraw-Hill Connect records using matched …

Three Decades Of Supreme Court Copyright Decisions: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band
Three Decades Of Supreme Court Copyright Decisions: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
This article discusses the revelations in the case files of eight Supreme Court Justices concerning eighteen copyright-related decisions issued by the Court between 1973 and 2005. The papers show the Court as a profoundly human institution, with the Justices often struggling to craft opinions that could gain the support of a majority. The Justices clearly cared about the copyright merits, but they were also willing to compromise to achieve a certain result. In several cases, the final opinion was anything but inevitable. This was particularly so with Sony Corporation of America v. Universal City Studios, 464 U.S. 417 (1984), …
