Freedom Of The Press In A Post-September 11 World: A Global Perspective, Melissa Erin Sindelar Jan 2005

Freedom Of The Press In A Post-September 11 World: A Global Perspective, Melissa Erin Sindelar

Honors Theses

Since the attack on the United States on September 11, most governments around the world have tried to decrease the likelihood of terrorists attacking their own countries or working within their own countries. Lawmakers have passed new legislation to control citizens’ activities. Many of these laws have tread upon human rights, including the right to a free press, which a majority of countries around the world have constitutionally protected. These new circumstances combined with the lack of respect and protection by police and government officials around the globe have created an unsafe world for journalists. The year 2004 will be …

News Media Consumption And Perceptions Of Poverty Within A Sample At The University Of Mississippi, Erin M. Smith Jan 2005

News Media Consumption And Perceptions Of Poverty Within A Sample At The University Of Mississippi, Erin M. Smith

Honors Theses

The American news media are the cultural shapers of today’s society. Their many stories create a visual sense of reality for the consuming public, and many media critics have begun to call foul for their many misrepresentations of minorities, in particular their over-representation of black poverty. These representations have been shown to have substantial influence on the public’s perception of poverty, which may shape the attitudes and beliefs toward certain policy implementation. To test the validity of such claims, a quantitative instrument was distributed over the course of two days at the University of Mississippi. Also, the survey was designed …

Engineering Genetic Networks To Measure Real Time Repression By Λ Cro In Vivo, Zachary Louis Leblanc Jan 2005

Engineering Genetic Networks To Measure Real Time Repression By Λ Cro In Vivo, Zachary Louis Leblanc

Honors Theses

The field of systems biology seeks to engineer systems in order to explore specific dynamic properties as they act in vivo. Cellular activities have been proven to be regulated by a range of DNA binding proteins that bind to specific sequences that activate or repress transcription. Certain phage and bacterial repressor proteins were among the first of these DNA binding proteins to be characterized structurally and functionally. The demand for study of key steps in regulation of protein expression, folding, and repression has created multiple studies into systems of varying complexity. The data in this report explores the lambda system, …

Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly

Honors Theses

The findings are consistent with other recent studies in Latin America. Eric Patterson found a similar pattern in Argentina and Chile in his study in 2003 (Patterson 2003). The data shows that despite Mexico’s history ofstrained Church/ State relations and a 70-year authoritarian rule, the Protestants in Mexico tend to hold similar beliefs on the support for democracy as the Protestants of other Latin American countries.

College Students' Attitudes About Feminine And Masculine Sexuality, Kathryn Stonecipher May 2004

College Students' Attitudes About Feminine And Masculine Sexuality, Kathryn Stonecipher

Honors Theses

Sexuality is a vital part of most people's lives. Unfortunately, most people feel as though there are very different standards for what is sexually acceptable for men and what is sexually acceptable for women. There is some evidence for this, but it is a possibility that this double standard is not how college students feel today about sexuality. The study that was conducted found that both men and women thought that women's sexuality was actually more acceptable than men's sexuality. The 75 students surveyed held less conservative attitudes about what is sexually acceptable for women than for men.

Discovering The Potential For Advancements In Intrusion Detection Systems, Kenneth J. Buonforte Apr 2004

Discovering The Potential For Advancements In Intrusion Detection Systems, Kenneth J. Buonforte

Honors Theses

An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a collection of monitors strategically placed on a network or individual host in order to detect anomalous behavior. Since James Anderson introduced one of the first frameworks for an intrusion detection system in [1]. researchers have extended the capabilities of these systems. IDSs take many forms, from systems as basic as command line audit logs to those that emulate the defense mechanisms of the human immune system. However, as intrusion detection has evolved, scientists and administrators alike are beginning to question the need for this technology due to its lack of quantifiable performance and …

Technology And The 'Self', Ryan Rinn Apr 2004

Technology And The 'Self', Ryan Rinn

Honors Theses

This project examines the relationship between technology and the self. Based largely on Gergen's (1991, 2000) descriptions of technological immersion and the saturated self, I discuss the ways that modem technologies have come to be a part of self-construction. Survey and focus group data from 63 university students are used to examine types of technological use, talk about technological experience, and self-construction. This paper describes the contradictory ways participants talk about technology, and defines nine themes of self emergence in participant discussion: 1) connection, 2) over-connection, 3) ease/laziness, 4) multitasking, 5) profile stalking, 6) loss of physical presence, 7) empowerment, …

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind? : American Citizens And The Genocide In Rwanda, Colette T. Connor Jan 2004

Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind? : American Citizens And The Genocide In Rwanda, Colette T. Connor

Honors Theses

As citizens of the most powerful country in today's global world, Americans can no longer make the excuse, "out of sight, out of mind." Ten years ago Americans betrayed Rwandans. Their betrayal was mild yet widespread, but had repercussions of tremendous human cost. Each individual American most likely did not feel responsible for the genocide, but the collective outcome of their bystander behavior contributed to the world's inaction. This sad truth can serve as an inspiration: this does not have to happen next time, as American citizens have the agency to influence U.S. foreign policy decisions.

Institutionalized Hypocrisy: Divorce And Politics In Chile, 1884-2004, Amanda Faye Mitchell Jan 2004

Institutionalized Hypocrisy: Divorce And Politics In Chile, 1884-2004, Amanda Faye Mitchell

Honors Theses

Chile is a country of many contradictions, and these contradictions lead to a great chasm between the needs of the people and the way in which the government tries to provide for those needs. Many of the policies and laws are in line with the doctrines of the Catholic Church, and these policies play an interesting role in the social landscape of the country. They create an environment in which the general population does not live in a manner that corresponds to the way that the Church claims they do. Therefore, the law based on Catholic doctrine often creates a …

Antibiotic Resistance In Northern Mississippi Wetlands, Shama Moktan Jan 2004

Antibiotic Resistance In Northern Mississippi Wetlands, Shama Moktan

Honors Theses

Bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents is a condition in which there is no susceptibility or decreased susceptibility to antibacterial agents that ordinarily cause cell death or inhibition of bacteria. Bacterial resistance to antibacterial agents is a quantitative measurement of the efficiency or concentration expressed in micrograms per milliliter or as inhibition zones in millimeters for the diffusion technique of an antibacterial agent against a specific bacterium. In vitro methods for measurement of antibacterial activity are available that are based on testing increased concentrationsof antibacterial agent against a bacterial isolate to identify at which concentration the growth of the bacterium is …

The Emergence Of A Middle Class Among Turks In Germany: A Move Toward Cultural Pluralism, Eden Blythe Hegwood Jan 2004

The Emergence Of A Middle Class Among Turks In Germany: A Move Toward Cultural Pluralism, Eden Blythe Hegwood

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the recent development of a middle class among the current Turkish community in Gemiany. By following the generations of individuals of Turkish descent from the original guest-workers arriving in Germany in the early 1960s on to the third and fourth generations of German Turks, the process of middle class establishment over time becomes apparent. Paralleling the emergence of Turkish middle class, increased acculturation or cultural assimilation has occurred, which is also described herein in terms of generational accomplishment. Finally, this work seeks to determine the relationship between middle class status and integration among this migrant group in …

Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis Jan 2004

Pyaguapy Ita: Silencing The Singing Stone: The Impact Of Modern Technology On Indigenous People In Brazil, Caitlin Cassis

Honors Theses

The name of the world's largest hydroelectric dam, Brazil's Itaipu Binacional, comes from an Ava-Guarani word meaning "singing stone." Before Itaipu became affiliated with dams it represented a smaller, but no less significant monument: a large rock formation in the middle of the Parana River that produced song when struck by water.₂ Today, neither the rock nor the Ava-Guarani tribe remain. In their place is a gargantuan hydroelectric dam that produces sounds more like a thunderous engine than song. When the Brazilian government, in conjunction with Itaipu Binacional officials, constructed the power plant, it not only silenced the singing stone, …

Faulkner's Wake: The Emergence Of Literary Oxford, John Louis Fuller Jan 2004

Faulkner's Wake: The Emergence Of Literary Oxford, John Louis Fuller

Honors Theses

The genesis of this project was a commercial I saw on television advertising the University of Mississippi. “Is it the words that capture a place, or the place that captures the words?” noted actor and Mississippi native Morgan Freeman asked. I had been confident in my knowledge of literary Oxford, but the commercial made me wonder just what had created this literary environment I took for granted. I set about my task dividing the culture into three realms of influence, the town and its history, the school and its academic authority, and Square Books and its economic influence. As I …

Molecular Entrapments In The Nanosized Cavities Of Polar-Solvated Zeolites X And Y”, Reagan Levidiotis Jan 2004

Molecular Entrapments In The Nanosized Cavities Of Polar-Solvated Zeolites X And Y”, Reagan Levidiotis

Honors Theses

Zeolites are microporous aluminosilicates that are used in many capacities as media for ion - exchange, catalysis, and molecular sieving. The internal structure of zeolites consists of silica and alumina tetrahedra arranged in such a way to form two types of cages: sodalite cages and supercages. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) such as pyrene can get into the supercages by means of adsorption from a nonpolar solvent, but cannot be extracted from the supercage by submersion of the zeolite in a polar solvent. In this study the zeolites X and Y (which are synthetic analogs of the naturally occurring zeolite faujacite) …
