Leadership Development Learning In Community Settings, Anne C. Shepherd
Leadership Development Learning In Community Settings, Anne C. Shepherd
Honors Theses
The Learning in Community Settings (LINCS) program at the University of Richmond is nearly two years old, and has been a catalyst for integrating community service into the University of Richmond curriculum. The program has grown exponentially, and now serves over 300 students, 15 faculty, and 50 community agencies. The program continues to expand and currently is planning programs of dissemination with the Bonner Scholar network and possibly with the Pew Partnership for Civic Change. This rapid growth and expansion has been both exciting and challenging. One of the challenges has been staying abreast of the program's growth. Assuring that …
The Children Are Singing. Can You Hear Them?, Kristen Leigh Netsel
The Children Are Singing. Can You Hear Them?, Kristen Leigh Netsel
Honors Theses
Everyday, millions of people worldwide awake to silence. They don't hear the sounds of mom making breakfast and coffee being made. They don't hear the sound of the neighbors' dog barking as the paper boy rides by on his bike. They aren't awaken by the steady shrill of the alarm clock. These people are deaf and they can barely hear the sound of their own voices, if at all. This is a world inhabited by 14 million Americans but remains unfamiliar to the rest of the population and there is little interaction between their world and ours. In fact, little …
Restructuring The Leadership Development Program For Ukrop's Supermarkets, Kristine Sweet
Restructuring The Leadership Development Program For Ukrop's Supermarkets, Kristine Sweet
Honors Theses
Ukrop's Supermarkets is a chain of twenty-two grocery stores throughout the Richmond area. They are known to be extremely customer service oriented to the point that if you ask a store employee where an item is you will be taken to it, not told where it might be found. In addition, you never bag your own groceries or even have to take them out to your car. Their employees do everything for you. The stores are very family oriented; as a result, they do not sell alcoholic beverages as is customary for supermarkets in Virginia, and they are not open …
The Female Language Barrier: A Close Reading Of The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson And Adrienne Rich, Annmarie Faiella
The Female Language Barrier: A Close Reading Of The Poetry Of Emily Dickinson And Adrienne Rich, Annmarie Faiella
Honors Theses
Historically, the First Amendment right to free speech was limited to certain groups. Language, although constitutionally guaranteed since 1776, has not always been a freedom for everyone. Among those at language's mercy are immigrants, slaves, and women. Women's speech was limited not by a lack of knowledge, but by a societal acceptance of women as inferior.
What then do women do to overcome this ever-present chasm? What women did in the nineteenth century, the 1960s, and are still doing today is: write more creatively. The tighter the restraint of language, the more inventive the woman must be to use it …

Ywca Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter Children's Playroom : From Wallpaper To Monopoly, Amy S. Dellamora
Honors Theses
Recognizing the tremendous need for immediate attention, my senior project was designed to help domestic violence victims. More specifically, I chose to target the project to benefit the children involved in domestic violence relationships. These children have frequently been abused themselves, and have witnessed the abuse against their mothers. The children need support directed toward their interests.
Interactive Technologies For The Jepson School Of Leadership Studies, Alison Hettrick
Interactive Technologies For The Jepson School Of Leadership Studies, Alison Hettrick
Honors Theses
With the onset of emerging technologies in both corporate and educational settings, the need arises for institutions to incorporate the latest advancements in these technologies in order to remain competitive. This means that educational institutions like the University of Richmond must be prepared to educate students by not only incorporating the latest knowledge that can be applied to the various components of a liberal arts education, but also including applicable technologies that enhance the learning potential of liberal arts course work. The focus of this paper is to discuss a proposal regarding the most appropriate way to make a prominent …

Ukrop's Leadership Development Program, Matt Stevens
Honors Theses
The Senior Project was to have been a project that would make a difference in the community or in an organization within the community and at the same time be something relevant and important to the student. After discussing our mutual interest in the area of leadership training, Kristine Sweet and I decided to get involved in a Human Resources or Training and Development segment of a local business. After sending out numerous letters of inquiry, we were finally offered a project at Ukrop's Supermarkets, Inc. that suited our desires and also fit the class requirements. The project appealed to …
The Reemergence Of The Goddess Image In Contemporary Art, Tara E. Patrick
The Reemergence Of The Goddess Image In Contemporary Art, Tara E. Patrick
Honors Theses
The goddess image, and its use in art and life, has a long history. The historical uses are explored through a brief history, followed by an expansion and discussion of the contemporary uses of the goddess image in the art of three Michigan artists: Ann Burian, Katheryn Trenshaw, and Ruth Zachary. The goddess image in art reflects a change in the spirituality of contemporary times.

The Role Of The Seed Coat In The After-Ripening Process Of American Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana L.), Jason E. Cox
The Role Of The Seed Coat In The After-Ripening Process Of American Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana L.), Jason E. Cox
Honors Theses
As plants evolve into new forms and shapes, the reproductive structures are often the last to change because of the importance of successful reproductive organs to the survival of the plant's hereditary information. Because of this particular feature, one very common method of determining how advanced a species is evolutionarily is the study of its reproductive cycle (Gifford and Foster, 1989). A few advanced classes, most notably the general class groupings of the Gymnosperms and Angiosperms, have developed seeds as a part of their reproductive cycle. Normally, there are several stages through which the seed must go in order for …
The Dominicans And Franciscans And The Influence On Early Renaissancce Art, Logan R. Helman
The Dominicans And Franciscans And The Influence On Early Renaissancce Art, Logan R. Helman
Honors Theses
The development of the Franciscan and Dominican Orders came from society's need to return to the basics and learn to live with peace and brotherly love. St. Dominic, in his optimistic ridigly governed, preaching and teaching Order and St. Francis with his strict codes and devout poverty started new trends in religion still present today. The art then evolved around these trends causing their popularity to expand to even greater distances and heights. Ironically, these new societies which based themselves on poverty brought about new wealth which could be seen in the churches, monasteries, and monumental paintings built up around …
The Extent Of Multimedia Computer Applications In The Business World, Mei Yee Lim
The Extent Of Multimedia Computer Applications In The Business World, Mei Yee Lim
Honors Theses
The world, or at least I, was all agog when touch screens arrived. My initial contact with touch screens was at a science exhibition in Menara MPPJ, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia in July 1987. That particular exhibit, which encouraged visitors to participate and to experiment with, was a graphic program. Visitors could use their fingers to select the drawing tool or the color they want (which is something like the tools on a MacDraw screen on a Macintosh) and use their fingers to move around the screen to draw anything they want. That added to my fascination with the world of …

Are Sexual Experiences In Childhood Related To Eating Disorders In A Sample Of College Students?, Sharin Sarkari
Are Sexual Experiences In Childhood Related To Eating Disorders In A Sample Of College Students?, Sharin Sarkari
Honors Theses
A link has been suggested by psychologists and clinicians between sexual abuse in childhood and adolescence, and later eating disorders. The present study investigates childhood sexual experiences and the appearance of eating disorders in a college. sample. The Eating Attitudes Test and the Finkelhor Sexual Victimization Scale were used in a sample of 158 undergraduates. The data confirmed the hypotheses that there is a significant association between childhood sexual abuse and eating disorders. Those sexually abused between the ages of 12-16 reported significantly higher eating disorders. Therefore the possibility of sexual abuse must be assessed and results included in a …

Changes In Spatial Learning Ability In Female Rats Due To Neonatal Transplantation Of Male Hippocampal Tissue, David B. Carr
Changes In Spatial Learning Ability In Female Rats Due To Neonatal Transplantation Of Male Hippocampal Tissue, David B. Carr
Honors Theses
It has long been acknowledged that sex differences occur in the performance of learning tasks. Specifically, it has been found that males typically outperform females in spatial learning tasks such as maze tasks. Recently, evidence has emerged which directly links sex differences in behavior to specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS). This evidence indicates that sexually dimorphic behaviors may be altered by the neonatal transplantation of opposite sex brain tissue. This research sought to extend these findings by examining the effects of neonatal transplantation of male hippocampal tissue on the spatial learning ability of adult females in three …
Crime And The Common Law In England, 1580-1640, Cara Swinden
Crime And The Common Law In England, 1580-1640, Cara Swinden
Honors Theses
In this paper, I have endeavored to illustrate many of the forms of crime committed during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. I have also attempted to show the role of local people in the law. The workings of the common law of England have been simplified to outline the investigations, the trials, and the punishments received by felons and trespassers. Much of my research came from original manuscripts. Therefore, I have retained the original spellings, word order, and phrases, neither correcting nor modernizing the words, word order, or phrases, of the quotations and excerpts from those original manuscripts.

Inventory Ordering Decisions Over The Product Life Cycle, Matthew J. Seiler
Inventory Ordering Decisions Over The Product Life Cycle, Matthew J. Seiler
Honors Theses
This report will link two key business concepts together. It will first examine the characteristics of different inventory replenishment systems used by purchasing managers. Second, it will bring the marketing phenomenon of the product life cycle into the picture. The varying demand patterns found in a typical product life cycle curve will become test data for a simulation exercise to determine which of four ordering models yield the lowest combination of holding and ordering costs. The costs related to holding finished good inventories account for a large portion of a firm's total cost structure (Adam and Ebert, 1989). To stay …

Analysis Of Artifacts From Maclellan Island Archaeological Survey, Beth Marie Fowler
Honors Theses
The focus of this report is Maclellan Island, also known as Chattanooga Island. Maclellan Islandis located in the Tennessee River directly under the Veteran's Bridge from about river mile 464.3 to 464.9. In the summer of 1983 a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga archaeological field school surveyed part of the island to determine if any historically significant sites might be harmed by the construction of the Veteran's Bridge. During the survey both prehistoric and historic remains were recovered. Although I did not participate in the 1983 field school, I did spend about 150 hours in the lab analyzing all of …
Spin Training For Pilots - Necessity Or Irrationality?, Richard Hall
Spin Training For Pilots - Necessity Or Irrationality?, Richard Hall
Honors Theses
Throughout the history of aviation, stall/spin accidents have claimed the lives of brave men and women who dared to attempt flight. Over the years, much debate has occurred over the spin phenomenon, with the FAA and the NTSB taking opposite sides about the necessity or irrationality of training America's aviators in spin recovery. This ATS 350 project will focus on the effectiveness of current legislation concerning private and commercial pilot license applicants. The requirements for said licenses, specifically the nonexistence of mandatory spin training for the applicants, will be examined and evaluated. The resultant outcome will hopefully be a standing …

Corporate Hierarchies: Communities Of Women In The Fiction Of Sarah Orne Jewett, Jennifer Milsop
Corporate Hierarchies: Communities Of Women In The Fiction Of Sarah Orne Jewett, Jennifer Milsop
Honors Theses
The fiction of Sarah Orne Jewett is not traditionally classified with the 'greats' of canonical literature. Many feminist scholars and critics argue that Jewett's excommunication may be in part because her writing doesn't fit the pattern of most American classics, those novels that Nina Baym labeled, "Melodramas of Beset Manhood."l There is no search for the father, no hunt to kill, and no discernable plot. Instead, Jewett depicts the world of female rituals, female relationships, and female initiations, or rites of passage. Her atypical style and format may not fit the classic pattern of adventure and initiation, but she offers …

A Groundwater Sampler's Handbook For Pollution Control Department Of Siu-C, Jarvis L. Schultz
Honors Theses
My honor's project began as an essay on hazardous waste disposal problems, but ended with a radically different product. This Groundwater Sampler's Handbook is a compilation of information that was either disjunctly found throughout Pollution Control's landfill project, non-existent, or unthought of.
