Wordsworth's Abstraction Of Forms From Nature: A Necessary Process, Robert P. Sulcer Aug 1989

Wordsworth's Abstraction Of Forms From Nature: A Necessary Process, Robert P. Sulcer

Honors Theses

Wordsworth's poetry abstracts forms from nature and man in order to make nature and man last; this abstraction is a changing of feeling into thought, of perception into conception, of the material into the word.

Effects Of Hippocampal Inactivation On The Performance Of A Three-Dimensional Object Discrimination Task By Environmentally Enriched Rats, Christopher T. Jones

Honors Theses

This study was an attempt to show that enriched rats can learn a three dimensional object visual discrimination DMTS and DNMTS task. The task utilized toys from the EC for sample objects on an alternating arm Y-maze. Any subjects which were successful in learning the task were to then be tested as to the effects of reversible inactivation of the hippocampus on the performance of these tasks.

Potentiation Of Diabetes By Testosterone In Male Rats, Anne M. Van Abbema May 1989

Potentiation Of Diabetes By Testosterone In Male Rats, Anne M. Van Abbema

Honors Theses

This research project was based on the results of a previous experiment. Due to the high rate of impotence found in male diabetic patients, testosterone was given to diabetic male rats, in an effort to reverse the diabetic effects. Testosterone, being an anabolic sex steroid, was expected to increase body weight and hopefully reverse the abnormal sex behavior. The opposite of the expected results were observed in the previous experiment. The animals lost weight, at a rate faster than the diabetic animals not receiving testosterone, and the abnormal sex behavior was not reversed. In other words, the exogenous testosterone appeared …

An Sem Study Of Selected Genera Of The Ranunculaceae, Gregory A. Mantooth Mar 1989

An Sem Study Of Selected Genera Of The Ranunculaceae, Gregory A. Mantooth

Honors Theses

The Ranunculaceae, better known as the Crowfoot or Buttercup family, is commonly recognized as one of the most diverse plant families in North America. A moderately large family, the Ranunculaceae contains 1750 temperate species with many of its genera represented in the southeastern United States (Gleason, 1952). Sixteen genera are native to Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia and it is these members of the Ranunculaceae that are the focus of my study. In my research, I have studied the seed coat patterns of various genera native to the southeastern United States. It is my intention to see how …

Fundamental American Studies Cocktail Trivia, Joanne Tuffy Kriegel Jan 1989

Fundamental American Studies Cocktail Trivia, Joanne Tuffy Kriegel

Honors Theses

F.A.C.T. is a combination of basic facts and trivia. The basics include the names of presidents, vice-presidents, states, and capitals. The blurbs of information following these basics consist of trivia. F.A.C.T. is also concerned with one's ability to be a successful, well-rounded cocktail party-goer. What this requires is some general knowledge of trivia in the following areas: books, music, sports, and movies. These facts will not improve your G.R.E. scores, but they will be useful both at cocktail parties, and when playing Jeopardy! And, most important of all, they will teach you several, little known facts about America and the …

The Effects Of Caffeine On Operant Behavior In The Mongolian Gerbil, Stephanie L. Myers Jan 1989

The Effects Of Caffeine On Operant Behavior In The Mongolian Gerbil, Stephanie L. Myers

Honors Theses

The present study looks at the effects of stomach loads of caffeine on operant behavior in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). Four male and four female gerbils were trained to a fixed interval schedule of 30 seconds with Noyes 4.5 mg rodent pellets used for reinforcement. A data collection and analysis package for Apple computers was used to measure the post-reinforcement response frequencies and number of reinforcements. Data was collected using a baseline of saline stomach loads of 1% of body weight, and then stomach loads of ascending concentrations caffeine mixed with saline (10, 20, 40, 60 mg/kg) with two to …

Use Of Solid-Phase Resins In Pesticide Monitoring, Jenny Bittinger Jan 1989

Use Of Solid-Phase Resins In Pesticide Monitoring, Jenny Bittinger

Honors Theses

The feasibility of using solid-phase resins for monitoring concentrations of pesticides in water was examined. Efforts were made to ascertain relationships between concentrations of a pesticide (methoxychlor) in water and on a resin (AXD-2) under laboratory conditions. Solutions of pesticide in water were drawn through columns of resin. Methylene Chloride was used to absorb the pesticide from the resin. Gas chromatography and ultraviolet spectrophotometry were used to measure concentrations of pesticide.

Effects Of Disability Status Of Test Administrator On Attitudes Towards Disabled Person Scores, Paul T. Hanson Dec 1988

Effects Of Disability Status Of Test Administrator On Attitudes Towards Disabled Person Scores, Paul T. Hanson

Honors Theses

The effect of test administrator disability status was examined in relation to a standardized scale which measures attitudes towards disabled persons. Conducting the study on two different dates with a total of 88 subjects it was found that filling out the attitude scale in a group with either: a visually impaired; Quadriplegic using a wheelchair; or able-bodied administrator did not result in a significant difference in recorded attitudes. There was, however, an interesting finding in that there was a wide variance of scores within each group. This encourages further data analysis.

An Investigation Of The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana L.), Angela Rambalakos

Honors Theses

Phytolacca americana L., or common pokeweed, is a tall, branching, perennial herb whose uses range from the preparation of certain medicines to being cultivated as a vegetable. At the same time, however, pokeweed is also a highly poisonous plant and certain precautions must be taken in utilizing this weed. The following paper opens with a description of P. americana including its habitat, range, structure, uses, and toxicity. The second part of this paper will investigate the topic of allelopathy - its history and its future. The final section of this paper involves a series of laboratory experiments conducted to examine …

Use Of Economic Instruments In Biodiversity Conservation Projects: The Sustainability Of Projects In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Amy Lyons May 1988

Use Of Economic Instruments In Biodiversity Conservation Projects: The Sustainability Of Projects In The Ecuadorian Amazon, Amy Lyons

Honors Theses

Under what conditions do biodiversity conservation projects that use economic incentives promote the most significant and sustainable biodiversity protection? The study of how nations can best invest their resources to promote conservation while simultaneously encouraging a sustainable form of economic development has recently become a major focus for ecologically rich, less-developed countries. There have been many innovative and successful attempts at combining biodiversity protection with economic development, and others that have done more harm than good. Since there is no guaranteed recipe for a successful project, it is crucial to examine projects in detail to discern which type of project …

Power And The Social Order: Sex Role Stereotyping In Children's Television, Christine Burke Jan 1988

Power And The Social Order: Sex Role Stereotyping In Children's Television, Christine Burke

Honors Theses

The aim of this study is to offer an assessment of the common themes in feminist, Lacanian psychoanalytic and deconstructionist theory. It will then discuss the degree to which these three discourses allow us to grasp the implications of the political socialization which occurs through television programming directed primarily at children.

There are points of commonality and discordance between these approaches. My aim will not be to make the argument that one approach is best, nor to arrive at a final synthesis. Rather, I construe these theoretical approaches as different lenses through which we can apprehend and evaluate the messages …

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer May 1987

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer

Honors Theses

The common bond between much of the film industry and Joseph McCarthy was insecurity and the drive for national approval. If one grasps the specific characteristics of McCarthy the man, and the methods of these politically "inspired" movies, we can to better place the period into context and acknowledge the fact that, if the citizenry is not aware, and is again caught by an ever-building wave of trickle down sentiment, the 1950s might not prove to be an isolated period in American history. Insecurity was not a fifties novelty. It still exists, and could potentially escalate anti-Communist policy and sentiment …

Lewis Carroll's Dissection And Restructure Of The Social Self, Pamela F. Pecora Apr 1987

Lewis Carroll's Dissection And Restructure Of The Social Self, Pamela F. Pecora

Honors Theses

Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel, Through the Looking Glass, should not be categorized as literature primarily for children. These stories are works of art whose complex nature demans intellectual interpretation. Such a study is not meant to take joy away from the innocent and pleasurable surface of Alice's adventures. Instead, the usefulness of probing deeply into this literature is to reveal a fundamental lesson that Carroll imparts to his readers. After studying the feelings prevalent in English Victorian society, Carroll's personal feelings as illustrated through his themes, and his devices and techniqu eof writing, I have …

Out Of Control: An Exploration Into The Dynamics Of Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia And The Consequences For The Sufferer And Those Around Her, Shenandoah M. Cardwell Apr 1987

Out Of Control: An Exploration Into The Dynamics Of Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia And The Consequences For The Sufferer And Those Around Her, Shenandoah M. Cardwell

Honors Theses

A theoretical and personal exploration into the dynamics of anorexia nervosa and bulimia was conducted with reviews of literature, interviews, and personal accounts. A basic definition of the problem according to the DSM-III was stated. Discussed in detail are factors which contribute to a possible predisposition for developing an eating disorder; these include the physiological/biological, psychological, familial and societal. The effects of eating disorders on those persons around an anorexic or bulimic were explained along with a special section emphasizing the epidemic of eating disorders on college campuses. Emphasis was placed on the importance of the role of helper in …

The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana) Berry Juice, Steven R. Parris Mar 1987

The Allelopathic Effects Of Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana) Berry Juice, Steven R. Parris

Honors Theses

This paper is divided into three major sections. The first section is a limited overview of the field of allelopathy, from its origins to its potential future. Since the field of allelopathy is relatively young and there are only a very few texts on allelopathy available, much of this information is taken directly from journal articles. The second section reviews the publications concerning Phytolacca americana (pokeweed) and some of its close relatives, as well as information on a number of interesting and potentially useful compounds that have been isolated from them. The third section describes a series of laboratory experiments …

The Cultural Significance Of Religious Festivals Of Seville: Holy Week And The Romeria Of Rocio, Brent Metz Aug 1986

The Cultural Significance Of Religious Festivals Of Seville: Holy Week And The Romeria Of Rocio, Brent Metz

Honors Theses

This project began long before I traveled to Spain. With the guidance of Dr. Smith, I wrote preliminary questionnaires and learned research methods and interviewing techniques in the fall, 1985. He also assisted me in writing a research proposal for the Waldo-Sangren Scholarship, and this award made my trip to Spain possible. In addition, I collected books and other information from Western's Waldo Library and from professors and friends who had previously been in Spain. Although I later modified my questionnaires and changed my conception of religious festivals in Seville, my preparation last fall was critical in orienting myself to …

Radicalism In Literature: Proletarian Fiction Of The 1930s, Susan Maxwell May 1986

Radicalism In Literature: Proletarian Fiction Of The 1930s, Susan Maxwell

Honors Theses

In a study of working class literature from the 1930s, I would contend that the most radical work was produced primarily by female writers. For the most part, this radicalism owed to the subordination and the victimization of women in society. Since all of the writers that were studied (Tillie Olsen, Meridel Le Sueur, Fielding Burke, Agnes Smedley, Erskine Caldwell, Michael Gold, Jack Conroy, and Floyd Dell) were at least involved with, if not members of, the Communist Party, this makes a fascinating study into the power of a philosophy of government on the individual. Not only was the individual …

Truth Lifting Up Its Head Above Scandals : The New Law Of Righteousness Proposed By Gerrard Winstanley And The Diggers, John Cook Apr 1986

Truth Lifting Up Its Head Above Scandals : The New Law Of Righteousness Proposed By Gerrard Winstanley And The Diggers, John Cook

Honors Theses

In the beginning of 1649 a group of landless people began to build houses and plant crops on the common lands at George Hill in Surrey, England. However these were not ordinary squatters for the Diggers also had a program which declared "freedom to the creation, and that the earth must be set free of the entanglements of lords and landlords, and that it shall become a common treasury to all, as it was first made and given" to men by God. (p.128) Sometime just before this the Diggers' leading spokesman, Gerrard Winstanley, had begun to claim "that many things …

The Effects Of Sex Typing, On The Perception Of Gender In Projected Animal Content, Steven J. Lash Jan 1986

The Effects Of Sex Typing, On The Perception Of Gender In Projected Animal Content, Steven J. Lash

Honors Theses

The present study replicates and extends Lash and Polyson's (1986) findings that a majority of mental images of commonly projected animals are gender associated. In the present study 91 subjects created mental images of the same animals and rated them on degree of masculinity-femininity and clarity on seven point Likert scales. The two studies were very consistent for feminine animals, but many of the masculine associated animals in the original study were found to be non-gender associated. With few exceptions the gender associations generalized across sex type as measured by the Personal Attributes Questionnaire, visualizing ability, and sex of subject. …

Observational Investigation Of School-Aged Children's Peer Relations, Darcy Milhaven Jan 1986

Observational Investigation Of School-Aged Children's Peer Relations, Darcy Milhaven

Honors Theses

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the importance of early peer relations in the social and emotional development of children (Hartup, 1983; Cowen, Pederson, Babagian, Izzo, & Trost, 1973; Roffl Sells, & Golden, 1972). The recognition of the contribution of peer relations to later adult adjustment has lead to a significant increase in the investigation of children's social relations. In particular, three general methodologies have been employed in these studies. First, informant reports with their origin in the sociometric tradition have utilized peer-, adult-, and self-reports to assess children's social reputations, behavioral characteristics, and self-perceptions (e.g., …

Community Adaptation In The Judeo-Christian Tradition, John K. Overton Apr 1985

Community Adaptation In The Judeo-Christian Tradition, John K. Overton

Honors Theses

Pesach represents the pivotal event in Jewish history to many, but its historical development bristles even more intensely and significantly than is often acknowledged. Its origins reach behind the Exodus event into pastoral cultures, behind the values of modern Jewry, behind the sensibilities of ancient Yahwism. Its understanding has been creatively synthesized, assimilated, digested and shaped within the culture of the Hebrews and then within the culture of the Jews, but this is all based on a historical victory. Cultural assimilation, military rebellion, and a consolidating expression after rebellion are all present.

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford Apr 1985

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford

Honors Theses

The pastoral, whether in painting, music, literature, or film, has always attempted to capture that fleeting moment in history, real or unreal, where man is autonomous. The pastoral life occurs only after man has gained a considerable amount of control over nature and before he has found himself controlled by his fellow man or by those common evils made real and specific by civilization. In other words, the pastoral tries to capture or create that period in history where man has conquered the wilderness in some major way, usually by farming or animal herding, but has not yet become involved …

James Joyce's Use Of Topography In Ulysses, Mary Beth Delea Apr 1985

James Joyce's Use Of Topography In Ulysses, Mary Beth Delea

Honors Theses

James Joyce's Ulysses stands out as the most conscientiously topographical novel ever written, according to the authors of Literary Landscapes of the British Isles. The Dublin which Joyce recreates is the Dublin of physical reality, painstakingly transposed so as to elicit exact details of the city. This detailed locale plays an important role in the novel, revealing many of Joyce's ingenious artistic purposes. The topography of Dublin appears the beginning of Ulysses and is significant until the end of the novel, influencing three major aspects of the work. The aspects referred to include the personality of Dublin as well as …
