The Method Of Radicle Emergence In Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed), Staci A. Van Winkle
The Method Of Radicle Emergence In Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed), Staci A. Van Winkle
Honors Theses
Germination is a key element in the development of a plant. This process encompasses several stages, one of which is the elongation of the radicle tip. This process has been noted to occur by different methods such as rapid mitotic division or cell elongation. However, such a mechcmism has not been studied in Phytolacca americana (pokeweed). It was the intention of this study to observe at the cellular level the nature of the Phytolacca americana radicle during normal germination. This was done using a routine histological microtechnique which involves embedding in paraffin and sectioning with a microtome. The sections were …

A Survey Of Small Terrestrial Mammals In The Forests Of The Tennessee River Gorge, Andrea Szymczak
Honors Theses
In 1995, a survey of small, terrestrial mammals in the Tennessee River Gorge was undertaken. These mammals were collected by using pitfall traps in three different sites of the gorge. A total of twenty-six specimens representing six species of mammals was collected. The majority of specimens collected were long-tailed shrews. Each specimen was deposited in the Natural History Museum at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Small Mammal Diversity In Grassy Habitats Of The Tennessee River Gorge, Nancy Monteith
Small Mammal Diversity In Grassy Habitats Of The Tennessee River Gorge, Nancy Monteith
Honors Theses
A survey of small mammal diversity in grassy habitats of the Tennessee River Gorge was conducted from February 20, 1995 to July 27, 1995. The purpose of the study was to provide new information on the biogeographical distribution of small mammals in southeastern Tennessee and to aid the Tennessee River Gorge Trust in its effort to have the gorge designated as a Biosphere Reserve. A total of 122 mammals representing ten species were collected from four different sites in the gorge. As a result of this study, new information was obtained that requires a range extension for the southern short-tailed …

The Effects Of Thyroid Hormone On Myosin Heavy Chain A-7 Production In Xenopus Laevis Tail And Leg Muscles, Andrew R. Noble
The Effects Of Thyroid Hormone On Myosin Heavy Chain A-7 Production In Xenopus Laevis Tail And Leg Muscles, Andrew R. Noble
Honors Theses
The present research examines the expression of myosin heavy chain genes in muscle fibers in Xenopus laevis. Characteristically different muscle fibers are expressed before and after metamorphosis. The embryonic myosin proteins that are synthesized during the tadpole stages are replaced with adult myosin heavy chains at metamorphosis. At least one of the adult myosin genes, called A-7, is expressed only in the adult animals, not in tadpoles. The controlling factor or trigger for the expression of this adult gene still remains unknown. There are a number of possible explanations for the A-7 regulation at metamorphosis, including changes in particular hormone …
Disney World--Leadership?, Laurie Kopp
Disney World--Leadership?, Laurie Kopp
Honors Theses
I began my study of Disney by writing down all of my personal impressions and memories of Disney. Before I read any articles, texts, publications, conducted interviews, and made observations, I wanted to understand where my perspective came from and consequently, the biases that I may run into during my research. Like many, I have visited the theme park as a child. Returning to Disney, this time over Christmas break as a Jepson student attuned to the leadership process, I was reminded of my youth but also struck by the ingenuity and the plentitude of leadership practice. I left the …
Leadership Training & Development In Secondary Schools, Vanessa M. Hesling
Leadership Training & Development In Secondary Schools, Vanessa M. Hesling
Honors Theses
After visiting several schools, talking to teachers and administrators, and actually presenting leadership workshops to youth, we have recognized the need to promote leadership education. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to develop ways advocating leadership education in high schools, through such means as conferences, camps, school in-service programs, and leadership texts. We have developed various programs focusing on many aspects of leadership, including motivation, conflict resolution, communication, ethics, decision making, vision, service, and group dynamics. We strongly believe that the merits of our programs, coupled with our theoretical background, will profoundly impact students' lives. Leadership is not a …

Transitions In Masculinity And Hemingway's Developed "Code", Daniel Polk
Transitions In Masculinity And Hemingway's Developed "Code", Daniel Polk
Honors Theses
The "Hemingway Code" is much more than two words that fit nicely together for a scholar's usage; the words signify a much deeper championing of masculinity, almost a haunting presence. For Ernest Hemingway living life every day, every moment with its fullest masculine fervor, became an obsession, a never-ending quest to be at one with the attitude of never complaining, never crying out, panicking, thinking too much, or regretting. To live a manly life in a series of tactical victories, performed with steadfast ritualistic mannerisms, is to embody masculinity, and therefore the "Hemingway Code."

Molecular Basis of Cancer: Cancer, a disease that has had a devastating and frightening impact on current society in the midst of a chemical revolution, represents a class of diseases comprising over 200 known types that affect various regions of the mammalian body (Farmer & Walker, 1985). This disease strikes randomly and is often diagnosed after the disease has progressed beyond present treatment capabilities. Cancer is the result of irregularities in growth, reproduction, and differentiation of cells due to pennanent flaws in genetic information. Mutations caused by environmental factors can be compounded over time to cause carcinomas of different tissues. …

Evaluation Of The Emotional Responsiveness Of Splanchnicectomized Laboratory Rats Using The Elevated Plus-Maze, Heather A. Finkle
Evaluation Of The Emotional Responsiveness Of Splanchnicectomized Laboratory Rats Using The Elevated Plus-Maze, Heather A. Finkle
Honors Theses
The goal of this study was to ascertain whether emotional responsiveness is attenuated when a subject undergoes bilateral splanchnicectomy. To accomplish this, the splanchnic nerve was severed bilaterally, below the branches to the adrenal glands. The majority of visceral information reaches spinal and medullary centers via the splanchnic, vagus, and pelvic nerves. Therefore, when severing the splanchnic nerve one eliminates one of the major afferent pathways transmitting visceral information to the central nervous system. Thus, we were testing the hypothesis that decreased feedback from portions of the gastrointestinal system would decrease emotional reactivity in a mildly arousing situation. No significant …

Personal Interviews Vs. Awareness: A Health Promotion Program For Behavior Change, Elizabeth Klein
Honors Theses
In the United States, heart disease is currently the number one cause of death in the adult population (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1991). Unlike many of the major causes of death, heart disease is largely preventable through changes in health related behaviors. Although a portion of heart disease risk is attributed to genetics, the primary cause of heart disease development lies in the eating habits, exercise behaviors, and smoking habits of the individual.
The Effects Of Berry Extracts From Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed) On Seed Germination, Kevin Blake Anderson
The Effects Of Berry Extracts From Phytolacca Americana (Pokeweed) On Seed Germination, Kevin Blake Anderson
Honors Theses
Extracts from the berries of Phytolacca americana (Pokeweed) exhibit the ability to inhibit germination of a variety of seeds, including its own. This inhibition has been shown to be effective even in dilute samples of the extracts. However, it is not known whether the germination inhibition caused by these extracts is induced by physical or by chemical mechanisms. This research proposes that the germination inhibition is induced by chemical inhibitors present within the berries. In an attempt to uncover the chemical agent(s) responsible for the germination inhibition characteristics exhibited by berry extracts of Phytolacca americana (pokeberry extracts), several separation techniques …

Sturdy Rogues And Wanton Wenches : Response To Vagrancy And Development Of The Tudor Poor Laws, 1530-1597, Sonia T. Banerji
Honors Theses
Tudor England experienced crisis levels of poverty and unemployment which manifested in the form of widespread vagrancy during the sixteenth century. From 1530 to 1597 the central government, often with inspiration from local initiatives, enacted a series of laws which attempted to address the causes of the problems as perceived by the public, in an effort to quell popular fears and anxieties regarding vagrancy.
The focus of this paper is on the response of Tudor society to the problems of poverty and vagrancy. It studies the statutory distinctions drawn between various states of poverty and how these differences disposed society …

Honors Theses
For this study, a member of the House of Delegates, who has been designated as a leader by his peers, has been selected for analysis. Delegate William Howell agreed to be observed during the legislative session of the House of Delegates. Three specific areas of leadership were observed during this time period. The decision making process, leader-constituent interaction, and the influence of values on leadership have been chosen as the three key areas of political leadership study.
Determination Of Hydroxyl Radical Production Rates In Natural Waters Using The Fluorometric Reagent P-Hydroxyphenylacetic Acid, Jason D. Hosmer
Determination Of Hydroxyl Radical Production Rates In Natural Waters Using The Fluorometric Reagent P-Hydroxyphenylacetic Acid, Jason D. Hosmer
Honors Theses
A means of determining hydroxyl radical production rates in natural waters through the formation of a directly detectable fluorescent product has been developed. A method similar to the enzyme mediated oxidation of phydroxyphenylacetic acid by hydrogen peroxide is used (Miller and Kester, 1988). Due to the high reactivity of hydroxyl radicals, and subsequently low steady state concentrations, direct detection is very difficult. In the past detection was achieved through the introduction of a probe, usually a substituted aromatic or alcohol, that decays away at an observable rate upon reaction with hydroxyl radicals. Detection limits and accuracy of such difference based …
The Entrepreneurial Leadership Puzzle : The Pieces You Need To Start A Business, Charles S. Ribaudo
The Entrepreneurial Leadership Puzzle : The Pieces You Need To Start A Business, Charles S. Ribaudo
Honors Theses
While having effective followers is critical, the leadership attributes of the entrepreneur is just as important. Gardner and several other leadership scholars have done significant research on the attributes of leaders. The entrepreneur is just one of many leaders that possess the necessary leadership attributes for success. Starting a company requires such a tremendous time commitment that the leaders within it must be able to handle the stress and ambiguity that goes along with it. This takes leadership to handle this ambiguity of whether they wilt meet the next paycheck. Employees, investors and customers will be looking to them to …

Field Research To Determine The Distribution Of A Cave-Adapted Sculpin (Osteichthyes: Cottidae), Jean Krejca
Honors Theses
Careful examination of 35 Missouri caves, 95 Illinois caves, 17 Tennessee caves, 2 Indiana caves, and 11 Arkansas caves has shown cave-adapted banded sculpins (Cottus carolinae) to be limited to only two karst areas of Perry County, Missouri. Within these two karst areas, the sculpins are known from only 7 caves, though they may be in a few other caves that are hydrologically connected to these known sites. They were found in large cave streams, in pools and riffles, and on a variety of substrates, from sediment to breakdown. Banded sculpins without features of cave adaptation were found …
