A Method For The Determination Of Purity Of Pnu-10483 Bulk Drug By Capillary Zone Electrophoresis, Gavin Gibson
A Method For The Determination Of Purity Of Pnu-10483 Bulk Drug By Capillary Zone Electrophoresis, Gavin Gibson
Honors Theses
In this investigation, a method was developed for the determination of purity of the drug PNU-10483 using the technique of capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE). CZE was seen as a potential alternative to the formerly used procedure of ion-pair reversed phase highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Nearly five years earlier, a similar study was performed, in which an attempt was made to develop a method that used CZE to determine the purity of bulk drug and the potency of drug tablets. While this development was mostly successful, sporadically unpredictable results reduced the method's overall viability. These outliers were thought to be caused …
The Effects Of Rose Bengal Application On The Production Of Salicylic Acid In Nahg Tobacco Plants, Nicole Christine Ott
The Effects Of Rose Bengal Application On The Production Of Salicylic Acid In Nahg Tobacco Plants, Nicole Christine Ott
Honors Theses
Plants have the ability to develop resistance to a wide range of pathogens following exposure to a single bacterium, fungus, or virus. This resistance occurs in all tissues, not only those that were previously infected. This mechanisms is termed systemic acquired resistance (SAR). The phenolic compound salicylic acid (SA) has been linked to SAR in tobacco, arabidopsis, and cucumber plants. Oxidative stress also causes SA production, which leads to SAR. An engineered tobacco plant (nahG) that does not have the ability to accumulate SA has been used as a research tool in investigations concerning SA activity. Rose Bengal …

Sustainable Development In The Third World: An Assessment Of The Conservation Actions In South Africa, Brazil, Malaysia, And Madagascar, Carol Rizkalla
Honors Theses
As a library research project, this thesis has gone beyond research in the library, and it could not have been possible without the aid of several people. First I must thank the organizations which responded to my request for information: the Center for Environmental Information, the Rainforest Action Network, the World Wildlife Fund, and Conservation International Specifically, Jill McLaughlin in the Communications Department of CI was· most gracious in sending me management plans for parks in Brazil and Madagascar. Carla Langeveld of the WWF, was very helpful during my visit to their library, and subsequently in my request for the …
The Pain Of An Amputated Limb: Subjective Morality And Existentialism In Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire, Aaron J. Klamer
The Pain Of An Amputated Limb: Subjective Morality And Existentialism In Anne Rice's Interview With The Vampire, Aaron J. Klamer
Honors Theses
Over the last century, perhaps no genre of literature has so enthralled, interested, and provoked the public's intellect as those pieces which fall under the somewhat ambiguous appellation, "existentialist" literature. Novels by Fyodor Dostoevsky, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus spawned generations of followers, including Ernest Hemingway, Richard Wright, and Franz Kafka. Today, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and especially the first book Interview With the Vampire, exemplify the characteristics of an existential novel. No doubt much of the reason for the popularity of the existential novel has to do with empathy, we see ourselves reflected in the characters. In order …
Approaches And Methodologies For The Synthesis Of Aromatic Natural Products, Christina A. Goudreau
Approaches And Methodologies For The Synthesis Of Aromatic Natural Products, Christina A. Goudreau
Honors Theses
Chemists have been captivated by the ability of most natural products to exhibit biological activity which in effect has made them very attractive to pharmaceutical companies. Many over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin were first extracted from natural products and are now an integral part of most of our lives. More importantly, certain drugs such as taxol, which is used to treat breast cancer, initially came from the bark of a yew tree. Extracting these substances from their natural source and using them medicinally at the demand of the consumers would result in the destruction of the natural habitat. Oftentimes, the …
Leadership: A Cultural Manifestation Of Evolution, Lee A. Scott
Leadership: A Cultural Manifestation Of Evolution, Lee A. Scott
Honors Theses
This essay has sought to expand the perspective of leadership studies by incorporating the general theory of evolution from the discipline of biology. Evolution has been compared to leadership by other researchers but they have limited themselves to a metaphorical comparison. The primary purpose of this paper was to show that such a distinction was inaccurate when we have a full understanding of general evolutionary theory. Once this connection was established in Part II, we turned to examine some of the implications for leadership studies in particular. While a new theory was not presented, a foundation for such a theory …
Outsiders' Perceptions Of An Organization's Leadership Through Exposure To Its Nonverbal Ecology, Dominick S. Feriozzi
Outsiders' Perceptions Of An Organization's Leadership Through Exposure To Its Nonverbal Ecology, Dominick S. Feriozzi
Honors Theses
This study's importance rests on its focus to discover whether individuals accurately perceive the leadership style of an organization through exposure to its nonverbal ecology, in this case the lobby/reception area. Leadership style is reflected in "the social dimensions of organizations, such as patterns of communication (frequency and occurrence of various kinds of inter- and intradepartmental, formal and informal, interactions), perceptions of participation in decision making, and job autonomy." More simply stated, leadership style reflects the manner in which work is completed throughout the organization due to the relationships that exist between leaders and followers.
Preserving The Arts For Future Generations, Adrienne Capps
Preserving The Arts For Future Generations, Adrienne Capps
Honors Theses
The majority of arts supporters and enthusiasts these days are older persons. The large amount of leisure time these people have is one reason why they support the arts, but the biggest reason is because they were taught to value the arts when they were young. In today's society where children and young adults are faced with difficult issues that even their parents did not have to confront. such as drugs, sexual orientation, violence, suicide, guns, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, rape, murder, and many others, the arts take a place in the far back seat. Often due to these …
For Black Leaders : A Study Of West African And African-American Leadership, Markita M. Boney
For Black Leaders : A Study Of West African And African-American Leadership, Markita M. Boney
Honors Theses
Ninety-two years ago WEB DuBois wrote, "The Problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the Color Line." This line is not just one experiences by blacks or merely a problem for the United States, but, rather, a problem the entire world faces. Many events in this century have supported his statement. However, I feel that the problem for Black America is the lack of intellectual and spiritual leadership within our community.
Dance As An Instrument For Social Change Leadership, Meredith Mccanse
Dance As An Instrument For Social Change Leadership, Meredith Mccanse
Honors Theses
From responses of audience members, a domestic violence expert, and a Dance professor, it is apparent that the performance of Silent Cries was a catalyst of change. While not all viewers were raised to a new level of consciousness, a number of participants reported raised awareness and/or intentions to take action in support of domestic violence survivors. An overwhelming majority of those polled reported some form of emotional response to the dance. This is evidence that even with a well-educated audience, dance has the power to make a connection and move hearts. The domestic violence expert as well as general …
King David : God's Annointed One : A Study Of Leadership Theory Through Analysis Of King David, Chris Headley
King David : God's Annointed One : A Study Of Leadership Theory Through Analysis Of King David, Chris Headley
Honors Theses
The intention of this text is to examine Biblical leadership principles. Because this author believes wholly in the full Divine Inspiration of the Bible, these principles are deemed, in this text, to be accurate, appropriate, and applicable to the daily lives of leaders. The leadership principles of the Bible will not be evaluated by outside texts regardless of current academic leadership thought.
There is a great deal that should be said to summarize what King David taught generations of people about leadership. Some of the lessons are solely Christian, others are very applicable to the secular world. In summary, David's …

Leadership In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet And Julius Caesar, Kelly Lynn Pearce
Honors Theses
The body of my paper is divided into several sections. In the first section, I will briefly discuss the existing literature on leadership and Shakespeare and my methodology in determining aspects of Romeo and Juliet and Julius Caesar that pertain to leadership. In Part II of my paper, I will provide an overview of the Elizabethan world-view and history, focusing primarily on perceptions of leadership, in order to provide a context for discussion. Part Ill will be an evaluation of Romeo and Juliet. First I will analyze the play as to how it reflects Elizabethan concerns regarding leadership. Immediately following …

Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin
Signal Transduction Pathways In Volvox Carteri, Heide Girardin
Honors Theses
The green alga Volvox carteri exhibits a virtual absence of protein synthesis in the dark, but begins synthesizing proteins necessary for growth and development almost immediately after exposure to the light. The regulation of protein synthesis in this system is known to be translational since extracts prepared in the dark have identical pools and quantities of mRNA as extracts prepared in the light (Kirk and Kirk, 1983). Exploration of the mechanism of translational regulation has led us to consider the importance of signal transduction pathways. By using a variety of commercially available drugs that affect specific components of known signaling …

Celluloid Blackness : Race, Modernity, And The Conflicted Roots Of American Cinema (1915-1939), Lincoln Farr
Honors Theses
Introduction: "The Problem of the Twentieth Century" In a full page interview in the New York Times on May 29, 1912, the Swiss psychiatrist Dr. Carl G. Jung told the American people, "It seems to me that you are about to discover yourselves. You have discovered everything else-all the land of this continent; all the resources, all the hidden things of nature."Jung used the interview to address the American people, at a moment which he somehow recognized as crucial in the development of human civilization. America, the "tragic" country which he struggled to comprehend, would soon become the harbinger of …
Establishing A Protocol For Dexamethasone Suppression Testing In Mice, Kimberly Michelle Koerner
Establishing A Protocol For Dexamethasone Suppression Testing In Mice, Kimberly Michelle Koerner
Honors Theses
Dexamethasone is a synthetic glucocorticoid which can be used to suppress the levels of glucocorticoids in the body. Thus the dexamethasone suppression test is used to evaluate the function of the negative feedback control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis). While a protocol for dexamethasone suppression testing in rats and humans has been established, an acceptable program for administration of dexamethasone to mice was lacking. In this study, mice transgenic for growth hormone, which are hypothesized to exhibit abnormal HPA control, and their normal littermates were used in three different trials in an attempt to examine the effects of dexamethasone …

The Effects Of Parental Occupation On Role-Playing In Children, Michele L. Warner
The Effects Of Parental Occupation On Role-Playing In Children, Michele L. Warner
Honors Theses
This study examined the relationship between the mother's occupational status and the type of play behaviors children engage in. There were 50 children (25 same-sex pairs) examined for this study. They were 5 years of age. The children were timed according to how much time they spent with "girl toys" along with the time they spent mutually interacting with one another. The findings suggest that there are gender differences in toy preferences. However, there are not significant differences between children who have stay-at-home moms and those whose moms work outside the home.
Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford
Temporal Flocking And Cacophony Simulating Agent Communication In A Noisy Environment, Jessica R. Crawford
Honors Theses
Realistic communication is one of the most difficult aspects of simulating group behavior because the patterns produced by group communication are complex and not easily definable. In this paper, we present a model, developed using artificial life methodology, for creating simulations of group communication. Our model employs autonomous, artificial agents to produce emergent group behavior that resembles the communication patterns of a group, specifically, a flock of birds. Each agent collects information about its environment and its neighbors and follows a set of rules designed to meet both group goals and individual agent goals. Because we seek to establish emergent …
Acid Mine Drainage And Its Effects On Salamander Assemblages In Cumberland Plateau Streams Of The North Chickamauga Creek Watershed, Tennessee, Melissa Combs
Honors Theses
In Appalachia's coal mining regions, acid mine drainage (AMD) has contributed to the widespread degradation of stream ecosystems. Salamanders are common inhabitants of healthy headwater streams and because of their permeable skins are excellent indicators of ecosystem intergrity. Hence, we investigated the potential effects of AMD on the species richness and relative abundance of aquatic salamanders in selected stream reaches (sites) of the North Chickamauga Creek (NCC) system, Tennessee. Specimens were collected by kick-net sampling with a 500um mesh dip net and/or electroshocking at four AMD-impacted sites (pH< 5.6) and two reference sites pH> 6.2), May-July 1996. Species richness was similarly low at reference sites, 2 …
The Effects Of Enrichment Treatments On Jaguar Behavior At The Warner Park Zoo, Miranda Cagle
The Effects Of Enrichment Treatments On Jaguar Behavior At The Warner Park Zoo, Miranda Cagle
Honors Theses
Not long ago, Sasha walked onto grass for the first time in seven years. For Pasha, it was the first in six. The two jaguar inhabitants of the Warner Park Zoo, Sasha, a nine-year-old female, and Pasha, her eight-year-old half-brother, were transferred to a new enclosure on 12 November 1995. Prior to that date, they had been housed in a smaller cage with a cement floor. The new enclosure was a long-awaited improvement for the zoo, designed to house two of its most wellknown animals. It was expected that the new enclosure would promote more natural behavior in the two …
You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me: Covenant In Faith And History, David H. Palmieri
You Shall Have No Other Gods Before Me: Covenant In Faith And History, David H. Palmieri
Honors Theses
In this paper I have attempted to explore "covenant" in faith and history, as it extends throughout the entire framework of the Bible and the entire history of the people who produced it. With such a monstrous topic, a comprehensive analysis of the material could take a lifetime to do it justice. Therefore, I have taken a very specific approach to the material in order to investigate the evolution of covenant from the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) to the Christian Scriptures (New Testament).
I have made every effort to approach this thesis as a text-based, non-doctrinal discussion. However, having my …
Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon
Leadership Within The Camps : A Study Of Holocaust Resistance, Meredith Ann Fallon
Honors Theses
The primary question underlying my research is, "What environmental factors, individual characteristics, behaviors, beliefs, and socialization factors enabled or ignited certain Jews to emerge as leaders within the concentration camps during WW II?" This study could reveal valuable information concerning why, how, and what types of leaders emerge in highly adverse and life threatening situations, and how some of these leaders were able to achieve success.
Leadership And The Breast Cancer Movement, Amy Silverstein
Leadership And The Breast Cancer Movement, Amy Silverstein
Honors Theses
The breast cancer movement stays away from power struggles and superiority complexes. These women figured out that in order to stay organized and in control, every woman needed to feel included. The nature of the issue of the movement helps as well. Since most of these women fought the disease either themselves or with others, they understand how important a supportive environment contributes to a person's well-being. This support flows into the movement and contributes to the sense of togetherness. Some women are more prone to leadership than others, but that does not mean that they are somehow superior. Their …
