The Importance Of Being Ladakhi: Affect And Artifice In Kargil, Radhika Gupta
The Importance Of Being Ladakhi: Affect And Artifice In Kargil, Radhika Gupta
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Ladakh often tends to be associated predominantly with its Tibetan Buddhist inhabitants in the wider public imagination both in India and abroad. It comes as a surprise to many that half the population of this region is Muslim, majority belonging to the Twelver Shi‘i sect and live in Kargil district. This article will discuss the importance of being Ladakhi for Kargili Shias through an ethnographic account of a journey I shared with a group of cultural activists from Leh to Kargil. A view of the landscape, natural and cultural, through their eyes provided a different, more eclectic portrayal of the …

Songs, Cultural Representation And Hybridity In Ladakh, Noe Dinnerstein
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Songs and cultural representation in Ladakh This article examines how Ladakhi songs represent cultural self-images through associated musical, textual, and visual tropes. Many songs of the past, both from the old royal house and the rural Buddhist populations, reflect the socio-political structure of Ladakhi society. Some songs, past and present, reflect a pan-Tibetan identity, both in connecting the former Namgyal dynasty to both the legendary King Gesar, as well as Nyatri Tsangpo, the historical founder of the Tibetan Yarlung Dynasty. Nevertheless, a distinct Ladakhi identity is consistently asserted. A number contain texts that evoke a mandala or symbolic representation of …

Tibetan Plateau Grassland Protection: Tibetan Herders' Ecological Conception Versus State Policies, Elisa Cencetti
Tibetan Plateau Grassland Protection: Tibetan Herders' Ecological Conception Versus State Policies, Elisa Cencetti
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
The establishment of the “Three Rivers’ Sources Nature Reserve” in 2002 - one of China’s largest ecological protection projects - has had a major impact on the lives of Tibetan nomadic herders. This paper examines the ecological viewpoints of Tibetan herders, their conceptions of grassland protection and what they believe to be the best strategies to solve grazing problems. According to the Chinese authorities, the Nature Reserve was established to protect the grasslands, as well as the sources of China’s three major rivers – the Yellow River, the Yangtse and the Mekong. Grazing bans and flock reduction have been two …
Modern Education And Changing Identity Constructions In Amdo, Lilian Iselin
Modern Education And Changing Identity Constructions In Amdo, Lilian Iselin
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This paper examines identity constructions of young and educated Tibetans from a socio-cultural background of nomadic pastoralism in Amdo. It is based on qualitative research conducted between 2003 and 2008, comparing two generations of educated young people from a township in the Amdo region of Northern Sichuan in the People’s Republic of China. It examines developments in education policies and practices as well as economic developments from 2003 to 2008 and argues that identity constructions of school students and graduates need to be analysed against the background of such changes. Conceptualisations of nomad identity are linked to nomadic pastoralism, and …

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
In 1999 China launched its Open Up the West campaign which was designed to change the economic face of the country’s Western regions. Left behind in the economic progress the country’s East had made since Deng Xiaoping’s reforms the West was defined in Chinese official and academic discourse as a case of chronic underdevelopment: technologically backward, lacking infrastructure and education, with its inhabitants’ living standards much below the average. The reasons for this situation were identified, and a cure prescribed: the Open Up the West campaign with the state’s intensive investments in the region was to lift it to a …

"Not Found In Tibetan Society": Culture, Childbirth, And A Politics Of Life On The Roof Of The World, Sienna R. Craig
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This article explores the work of culture and politics in the context of health-development interventions. Specifically, I discuss a maternal-child health project that was conceived and executed in the Tibet Autonomous Region, China, and the place of engaged medical anthropology therein. This work takes inspiration from Pigg's (1997) insights about the ways health-development programs can adopt specific interpretive lenses that "create" categories of being and experience such as "Traditional Birth Attendants" (TBAs). This article illustrates the ways such categories circulate to serve the needs of governmental and non-governmental organizations, and, in the process, how they run the risk of essentializing …
