American Bardo, Adrie Kusserow

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Ethnographic poetry allows me to describe the often viscous, clumsy, awkward encounters between self and other that leave both parties covered in the complex residues of each Other. This poem came out of a summer of visits I made to the homes of Bhutanese elderly in Burlington, Vermont. I was trying to get a sense of their well-being, levels of isolation, challenges, and hopes. Poetry allows for a kind of ethnographic fabric, woven from the ethnographer and the subjects’ voices, memories, expectations and doubts, which resists more linear, one dimensional descriptions. The Bhutanese elderly so obviously carried their pasts, religious …

The Road To Lingshed: Manufactured Isolation And Experienced Mobility In Ladakh, Jonathan P. Demenge Aug 2013

The Road To Lingshed: Manufactured Isolation And Experienced Mobility In Ladakh, Jonathan P. Demenge

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The article deals with the political ecology of road construction in Ladakh, North India. It considers the way humans exploit and transform the environment through social and political arrangements and for purposes that are socially and culturally mediated (Nyerges 1997).1 Roads – as “socionature,” part social, part natural (Swyngedouw 2003 following Lefebvre)2 – are an integral part of this environment; and roads in turn affect people, influence the way they move, and what they do. The article is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Ladakh between 2006 and 2009 along the future Zanskar Highway, a trans-Himalayan road that has been …

Readings On Islam In Ladakh: Local, Regional, And International Perspectives, John Bray

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

The influences of two major religions – Buddhism and Islam - are interwoven in Ladakhi history and contemporary society. However, by comparison with Buddhism, the study of Islam has often been neglected. This essay offers a reading guide as a basis for further study. It draws on a range of sources in Asian and European languages, including texts published locally in Ladakh, as well as academic monographs and articles in specialist international journals. The essay begins with a discussion of the key historical texts before looking more closely at Ladakh’s links with Central Asia, and the political and cultural impact …

Religious Fundamentalism In Zanskar, Indian Himalaya, Salomé Deboos Aug 2013

Religious Fundamentalism In Zanskar, Indian Himalaya, Salomé Deboos

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Zanskar valley, nested in the Indian Himalayas is at a turning point of its history. After centuries of Buddhist-Muslim marriages, these are now rejected by both religious groups. This paper addresses the impact of the rise of religious fundamentalism on social regulation and communal negotiation in Padum and Zanskari society. This is a Tibeto-Burman speaking Himalayan population made up of a majority of Mahayana-Buddhists and a minority of Sunni-Muslims. Based on ethnographic research conducted since 2001 in the local language, the anthropological approach presented here emphasizes the importance of speech acts and also uses a socio-cultural and psycho-sociological perspective. It …
