The purpose of this thesis was to design the costumes for the Division of Theatre and Dance’s production of An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde. The procedure for this project started by discussing the play with the director James Brown, who shared his thoughts, concepts and ideas for the entire production. This discussion was followed by reading the script and communicating ideas with the rest of the design team. In 1990, the United States Congress passed the Hate Crime Statistics Act (HCSA) which set into motion the development of a law-enforcement based data collection system aimed at learning more about “hate crimes.” By 1999 the term “hate crime” had become so widely used and recognizable that when news broke of the murders of Matthew Shephard, a University of Wyoming student who was brutally murdered because he was gay, and James L. Although many attempts have been made in the recent years for permeability prediction using Artificial Neural Network (ANN), none of the approaches has employed prespecified test set instead of a randomly generated test set. The methodology for selecting proper pre-specified test set was presented in chapter four of this report. The pre-specified test sets were chosen from a plot of log of permeability versus density. A study of 1100 water wells in Lebanon and southern Dauphin Counties, Pennsylvania was conducted to determine the relationships of several hydrogeologic variables, especially lineaments, to water well yield. This project will likely improve the use of ground water exploration techniques in the area. The primary well groups studied were 493 business/large-diameter public supply wells, and 522 domestic-agriculture supply wells. Clastic terrane wells produce higher yields than carbonate and igneous terrane wells. Wells located near any fault type produce greater yields than wells further away. Lineaments relate better to well yield for business/public supply wells than for domestic-agriculture wells. Clastic …

Heart disease and obesity are concurring health problems in the state of West Virginia (WV). With obesity levels rising and heart disease remaining the number one cause of mortality in WV, the need for a lifestyle change is prominent. The West Virginia Restaurant Survey attempted to determine the availability of heart-healthy food items that restaurants offer and how the items are promoted in order to determine the need for intervention programs that support heart-healthy food choices. Workers’ compensation is a social insurance program with different attributes in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Workers’ compensation programs are largely privately funded. In all North American jurisdictions, workers’ compensation benefits are paid for by employers, through insurance premiums. More dangerous occupations have higher premium rates than do safer occupations and industries. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) makes more likely the possibility that workers from one jurisdiction, made ill or injured by their employment, will seek help in a transborder jurisdiction. An increase in the incidence of respiratory disease reported in a herbicide producing factory correlates with potential exposure to 3-Amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (AMT) and AMT based product 1 (AMT-bp1). In animal studies, no signs of systemic toxicity or irritancy were observed with concentrations up to 25% AMT or 40% AMT-bp1. AMT-bp1 was negative while a dose dependent increase was observed following exposure to AMT in the LLNA. An increase in B220+IgE+ cells was observed at 25% AMT exposure. AMT was negative in the MEST (up to 25%). Following dermal exposure 5 days a week, animals exposed to 25% AMT demonstrated elevated levels …

When Alexander Campbell, a young Scots-Irish minister, immigrated to the United States in 1809, he encountered a new nation that was pulsating with religious revival, hungry for more territory, and already divided by the “peculiar institution” of slavery. Within twenty years, Campbell established himself as a well-known religious reformer, educator, and landholder in Virginia’s Northern Panhandle. Although Campbell otherwise believed in separation of church and state, he agreed to participate as a western political delegate to the 1829-1830 Virginia Constitutional Convention. There are two classifications of femoral implants ñ cemented and cementless. The object of this study was to assess the effect of bone viscoelasticity on cemented and cementless implant stability. A cemented implant design was evaluated via a 3-D FE model. The results showed a small 1.41% increase in stem subsidence with inclusion of bone viscoelasticity. This is explained by the low stresses at the cement-bone interface. A 2-D FE model was utilized to evaluate the effects of coefficient of friction, press-fit and bone viscoelasticity on stem fixation. The push-out load increased with µ for each value of δ, but …

The objective of this study was to determine the technical feasibility of using the effluent of an active mine water treatment facility to rear Oncorhynchus Mykiss (rainbow trout) by performing an extensive water quality analysis, and monitoring and analyzing bioassays. Monthly grab samples were taken and analyzed for dissolved concentrations of typical acid mine drainage (AMD) metals (e.g., iron, manganese, aluminum, magnesium, and calcium). Additionally, sulfate concentrations, alkalinity, acidity, and hardness were measured. Treatment Effects Of The Edgewise Herbst Appliance: A Cephalometric And Tomographic Investigation., Ryan Keith Van Laecken

This study looked at the treatment effects of the Edgewise Herbst Appliance. Thirty-two treated subjects were compared to twenty eight controls. The subjects were compared at three different time intervals; T1-T2 (appliance treatment), T3-T2 (observation period), and T3-T1 (total treatment). Lateral cephalograms were used for the measurements. Tomograms were also evaluated of the 32 treated subjects, from T2-T1 to determine if the position of the condyle within the fossa changed following Herbst treatment. At T2-T1 there was a net overjet correction of 8.4 mm with 39.6% being skeletal and 63.1 % being dental. The molar relationship was corrected by 7.2 …

The purpose of this study is to match the appropriate setting opportunities with the level of recreation specialization of selected climbers, using the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) as a model of different setting opportunities. Questionnaires were distributed and analyzed to create a specialization index level. Associations with setting variables were analyzed using Kendall’s tau-b correlation and model selection loglinear analysis. Of the relationships examined, four variables were significant using Kendall’s tau-b and two using model selection (α= .05). Two types of advising, prescriptive and developmental, are examined in relation to the level of advising (pre-major versus major) and type of advisor (full time advisors or parttime graduate student advisors for pre-majors, and faculty or full-time department advisors for majors) in four academic areas selected for contrast in advising approaches at a large land grant institution. This study explores the intersection of two historical phenomena. From the 1880s to the 1920s, Central Appalachia experienced rapid industrial development as the entry of railroads into the mountains initiated large-scale coal extraction. At the same time, East European Jewish immigrants streamed into America's eastern seaboard. Some found their way to the coalfields, where they carved out a role as retailers in an expanding rural-industrial economy. This niche enabled them to build several small but vital Jewish communities which lasted late into the twentieth century. A Multidimensional Analysis Contrasting Youthful Nonoffenders, Sex Offenders, Violent Offenders, And Status Offenders., Nick Sava Yackovich

This study involved a comparison of 75 adolescent participants divided into four groups. Members of three of the groups were adjudicated delinquent: sex offenders, violent (nonsexual) offenders, and status offenders. A group of nonffenders was also used as a control group. The groups were compared using a contrast analysis of four dependent variables: self-concept, sexual history, cognitive distortions, and alexithymia. Findings of this study reveal a significant relationship with the presence of alexithymia among the offending sample when compared to the nonoffenders. Also evident is a greater self-concept score among the nonoffenders when contrasted with the offenders. Another significant comparison …

Continued occupational exposure to hand transmitted vibration (HTV) has been related to a series of disorders, which have been collectively defined as the hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The purpose of this study was to determine the difference, if any, between the levels of role conflict and role ambiguity as perceived by full-time faculty at two types of community and technical colleges in West Virginia. Full-time faculty from two freestanding and seven component institutions participated. Demographic characteristics were also compared with role conflict and role ambiguity by institutional type. Two survey instruments were mailed to the total population of 332 faculty. A return rate of 61% was attained. This study examined the impact of a hypermedia instructional module, a multi-unit HyperCard stack program entitled The Battle of Philippi , on student test performance in West Virginia History. Three instructional methods were implemented: traditional teacher presentation, student self-paced engagement with the computer-based module, and a hybrid instructional method using traditional instruction supplemented with the computer-based program. Students in the hybrid treatment showed the greatest increase in test performance. The self-paced students showed the next greatest increase. Students in the traditional group showed the least increase. Computer anxiety was not a significant predictor of student test performance in West Virginia …

This research is an exploration of how advancements in the Internet have been utilized by Kuwaiti students attending colleges in the U.S. The main advancement researched is Internet telephony, the method that uses the Internet to transmit voice and audio communications from one place to another. A survey was conducted, and 187 undergraduate Kuwaiti students completed it. Results show that most students own computers, have Internet access, and utilize several Internet functions in order to communicate with family and friends in Kuwait. HepG2 cells were used as a model system to study the regulation of glucose-6- phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Regulation of hepatic G6PD expression involves changes in the amount of G6PD pre-mRNA in the nucleus in the absence of changes in the transcription rate of the gene. G6PD expression is increased in HepG2 cells incubated with increasing glucose concentrations. G6PD mRNA is increased 3- to 4- fold by incubation in 25 mM glucose, as compared to 0 mM glucose. Nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), commonly referred to as NOx, are known to be harmful to human health. Oxides of nitrogen also rate among the principal agents of photochemical smog. Consequently, the Federal standards for NOx emissions have become increasingly stringent and have been lowered from 6.0 g/bhp-hr in 1990 to 0.2 g/bhphr in 2007. Engine out NOx emissions from diesel engines are typically composed of about 95% of NO and 5% NO2. This can lead to rapid emergence of viral variants resistant to antiretroviral drugs. A better understanding of retroviral replication may lead to the development of improved antiviral drug therapy and effective vaccines to retrovirus-related diseases. This study used a total of 243 undergraduate students to examine differences in attachment style and personality. The Hazan and Shaver (1987) attachment measure and the Relationship Questionnaire (Bartholomew and Horowitz, 1991) were used to discern attachment type. The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire-155 (Patrick, Curtin, & Tellegan, 2000) and the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, Second Edition (Fritts & Warren, 1996) were used to identify global personality variables. Findings revealed that the two attachment measures are highly related, and positive correlations were found between the global personality constructs of Positive Emotionality, Constraint, and Total Self-concept. This dissertation conducted a comparative examination of executive-appointed national study (advisory) commissions utilized by Canada and the United States. Such commissions of inquiry are ad hoc bodies which are established by executive authority, assigned a specific issue, crisis or incident to investigate, conduct their affairs openly, and conclude with a publicly issued final report. In the Canadian context there has been very little study of the more than 350 Royal Commissions of Inquiry created since Confederation. Although domestic violence is a topic that has been the focus of a great deal of research, little attention has been paid to the help-seeking behavior of battered women. No evaluation to date has examined variables that facilitate and inhibit help-seeking behavior in battered women, using relevant comparison groups. The purpose of the present study was to investigate factors that discriminate battered women who seek help from those who do not. Variables that were hypothesized to impact the help-seeking behaviors of battered women were examined, including depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, social support, social isolation, coping styles, and general distress. This dissertation contains two parts. The first part is focused on Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). A new simple method has been developed to produce SERS-active metal surfaces on aluminum foil. Strong surface enhancements have been observed from cadmium, nickel, gold, iron, copper, and silver surfaces prepared by this method. SERS of aqueous pyridine solutions have been investigated on these different metal surfaces and the differences are explained by the different adsorption behaviors. Strong surface enhancement effects have also been observed using iron/copper and platinum/copper surfaces, which are prepared by two different metals reduced sequentially onto aluminum foil.
