Dot Matrices, Kelly Suzanne Sipes
Dot Matrices, Kelly Suzanne Sipes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
My thesis work is the production and mapping of painterly space using particular methods of formal abstraction, in contrast with common pattern. I construct these paintings in several layers, embellishing gestural atmospheres with idiosyncratic shapes and patterns in alternating rhythms. My focus is on the development of improvisational processes, creating a less ceremonious context for the measure of abstract painting as an idea, a visual language, and as an autonomous object. My technique of mapping is established to consider a territory for a reformed autonomous identity that is in opposition to the pluralist excesses of the postmodern. This paper will …

Creating A Gis Database For Nursing Home Evacuation Planning In Virginia Beach, Virginia, Randall S. Dawson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The focus of this project is planning for the evacuation of the nursing homes of the city of Virginia Beach, VA in response to a hurricane risk. The population of nursing homes, hospitals and assisted living communities need special assistance when evacuating an area, requiring medications, equipment, and specialized transportation. Previous studies for Virginia Beach have provided generalizations for the population as a whole yet have provided very little data for specific communities such as nursing homes. A GIS database is created for nursing home establishments including road networks, bridges and tunnels, elevation, estimated facility population, and recently modeled storm …
Fractal Analysis Of Fingerprints, John C. Deal
Fractal Analysis Of Fingerprints, John C. Deal
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current methods for comparing fingerprints have weaknesses that have opened them to criticism. Current methods concentrate on the comparison of minutia in the print either manually or with the assistance of a computer algorithm. This causes these methods to depend highly on the presence of minutia and their relationship to one another. Absence or rotations of minutia can prevent current methods form making accurate comparisons. The goal of this process is to develop a new method for analyzing fingerprints that addresses many of the concerns with current methods.;The developed process uses an iterated function sequence (IFS) to convert the image …

Selected Topics In Video Coding And Computer Vision, Congxia Dai
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Video applications ranging from multimedia communication to computer vision have been extensively studied in the past decades. However, the emergence of new applications continues to raise questions that are only partially answered by existing techniques. This thesis studies three selected topics related to video: intra prediction in block-based video coding, pedestrian detection and tracking in infrared imagery, and multi-view video alignment.;In the state-of-art video coding standard H.264/AVC, intra prediction is defined on the hierarchical quad-tree based block partitioning structure which fails to exploit the geometric constraint of edges. We propose a geometry-adaptive block partitioning structure and a new intra prediction …

Application Of The Emotional Intelligence Construct To College Student Binge Drinking, Jeffrey P. Dulko
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Although extensive research has been conducted in the area of college binge drinking, relatively little has been done to study differences among alcohol-related consequences. Some initial studies have shown that binge drinking and its consequences are associated with several emotional and interpersonal factors, but there has been no comprehensive examination of these relationships. The theory of emotional intelligence (EI) has been developed recently to study emotional and interpersonal factors as an integrated construct. Research of the relationship between alcohol and EI could provide a valuable base for which to design alcohol prevention programs that target improving emotional and interpersonal deficits …

Comparative Study In Stereographic Reading, Alberto E. Santiago
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Viewing a Single Image Random Dot Stereogram (SIRDS) or autostereogram picture requires careful concentration from the viewer. The concentration necessary to perceive depth may affect the performance of the reading process. We are studying if information perceived by way of a stereogram is better retained in memory compared to normal reading without stereo vision. To measure subject's memory performance we administered a questionnaire after a stereographic experience containing a readable story. We discovered that exposing subjects to stereographic information has a slight advantage on the ability to remember precise details of the information read.

Error Resilient Image Transmission Using T-Codes And Edge-Embedding, Premchander Reddy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Current image communication applications involve image transmission over noisy channels, where the image gets damaged. The loss of synchronization at the decoder due to these errors increases the damage in the reconstructed image. Our main goal in this research is to develop an algorithm that has the capability to detect errors, achieve synchronization and conceal errors.;In this thesis we studied the performance of T-codes in comparison with Huffman codes. We develop an algorithm for the selection of best T-code set. We have shown that T-codes exhibit better synchronization properties when compared to Huffman Codes. In this work we developed an …
Development Of Contacting Material For Cathode Chamber In The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Tyler-Blair A. Sheppard
Development Of Contacting Material For Cathode Chamber In The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, Tyler-Blair A. Sheppard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The objective of this research was the development and long-term testing of cathode-interconnect contact materials for the solid-oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The research effort was focused on the utilization of silver and silver cerments. Silver is an attractive candidate contact material due to its high ductility, high conductivity, and low cost relative to other candidate SOFC contact materials. Furthermore, silver does not form non-conductive oxide scales in the SOFC cathode environment. One major concern about its usage is the volatility of silver at the SOFC operating temperature of around 800 °C. Samples were manufactured by depositing submicron size silver particles, …

The Effect Of Moisture Addition With A Mold Inhibitor On Feed Manufacture, Pellet Quality, And Broiler Performance, John M. Hott
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Commercial broilers are typically fed pelleted diets because of the resulting improvements in bird performance and ease of transportation. Feed and feed manufacturing costs account for 60--70% of the total costs incurred in a broiler production system. Feed manufacturers are constantly searching for ways to decrease production costs while maintaining high pellet quality. Moisture addition at the mixer has been shown to increase pellet quality and decrease pellet mill energy consumption. However, past literature has incorporated high moisture addition levels that may be impractical in an industrial setting. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of moisture …
Alterations In Progesterone Catabolic Enzymes By Insulin, Caleb Owens Lemley
Alterations In Progesterone Catabolic Enzymes By Insulin, Caleb Owens Lemley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current experiments were conducted to determine if insulin could alter the progesterone catabolic enzymes, cytochrome P450 2C and 3A in vitro, utilizing a mouse hepatocyte cell-line, or in vivo, utilizing the ovariectomized ewe as a model. The objectives of the in vitro work were to determine if a four hour challenge with insulin, glucagon or a combination of both insulin and glucagon would lead to a reduction in the relative abundance of CYP2C39 or CYP3A13 mRNA, as well as a decrease in the enzymatic activities of CYP3A and CYP2C subfamilies. A dose dependent decrease (P < 0.05) in CYP2C and CYP3A activity was observed in hepatocytes challenged with increasing concentrations of insulin, while a challenge with glucagon had no effect on cytochrome P450 2C or 3A activity. Cytochrome P450 2C activity was decreased (P < 0.05) during exposure of cells to 1.0 nM insulin and 0.1 nM glucagon as well as 0.1 nM insulin and 1.0 nM glucagon. Cells cultured with 1.0 nM insulin and 0.1 nM glucagon showed a trend ( P < 0.10) for a decrease in CYP3A activity. The relative abundance of CYP2C39 and CYP3A13 mRNA showed no response to insulin, glucagon or a combination of insulin and glucagon exposure. These data support a model in which the known insulin-induced decrease in progesterone catabolism is a result of a reduction in CYP2C and CYP3A activity. The objectives of the in vivo experiment, utilizing ovariectomized ewes, were to determine if supplementing feed with either sodium acetate or sodium propionate altered insulin secretion, hepatic activity of cytochrome P450 2C and 3A, and/or progesterone clearance. Sixteen ovariectomized ewes were fed 3 kg/d for 10 d, a diet consisting of 50% corn silage, 38% triticale haylage, 12% soy bean meal, and 200 mL of 3.5 M sodium acetate (energy control n = 8) or 2.0 M sodium propionate (gluconeogenic substrate; n = 8). Insulin concentrations were determined directly before feeding and at 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, and 300 min. Progesterone clearance from peripheral circulation was measured by giving a 5 mg injection of progesterone into the left jugular vein and collecting blood via the right jugular vein at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20 and 30 min afterwards. Liver biopsies were taken one hour after feeding and used for determination of cytochrome P450 2C and 3A activities. Insulin concentrations in ewes supplemented with sodium propionate were elevated (P < 0.05) at 15, 30 and 60 minutes after feeding compared to the sodium acetate group. Cytochrome P450 2C and 3A activity were decreased (P ≤ 0.05) 1 h after feeding in the sodium propionate treatment relative to sodium acetate treatment. Clearance of progesterone from the peripheral circulation, one hour after feeding, was similar between treatment groups, as well as the average fractional rate constant of progesterone clearance (k). Elucidating a mechanism to decrease progesterone catabolism, thereby increasing concentrations of progesterone, seems a logical approach to ameliorate high rates of embryonic loss without compromising dry matter intake.

The Fivemile and Eads Mill members of the upper part of the Hinton Formation are two significant marine zones that occur within the Mauch Chunk Group in southwestern Virginia and southern West Virginia.;Multivariate analyses of binary fossil data for the Fivemile Member were performed in order to determine any underlying paleoecologic signals. Analyses of the data sets indicate that this member is dominated by a euryhaline fauna in four of the five locations studied. Euryhaline fauna characteristic of the Fivemile Member include the brachiopod Lingula, the bivalves Modiolus and Septimyalina, and ostracods. The geographic distribution and richness of these dominant …
State Minimization Problems In Finite State Automata, Chris Tauras
State Minimization Problems In Finite State Automata, Chris Tauras
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this thesis, we analyze the problem of state minimization in 2-MDFAs. The class of 2-MDFAs is an extension of the class of DFAs, allowing a small amount of nondeterminism; specifically two start states. Since nondeterminism allows finite automata to be more succinct, it is worthwhile to investigate the problem of minimizing such finite automata. In the case of unbounded non-determinism, i.e., NFAs, such automata can be exponentially more succinct than DFAs [1], but the corresponding minimization problem is PSPACE-complete [2]. Even in the case of 2-MDFAs, which are only polynomially more succinct than DFAs, the minimization problem remains non-trivial; …
Post-Fledging Ecology And Survival Of Neotropical Migratory Songbirds On A Managed Appalachian Forest, Tim A. Dellinger
Post-Fledging Ecology And Survival Of Neotropical Migratory Songbirds On A Managed Appalachian Forest, Tim A. Dellinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
During the post-fledging period, some juvenile songbirds appear to require early successional habitats at some level, suggesting that disturbance (whether natural or anthropogenic) in the landscape is important. Previous studies of juvenile Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) have found them in early successional areas in which adults do not nest. My objective was to determine how juvenile Wood Thrushes used areas harvested through various silvicultural techniques within a forested landscape. I examined settled areas, habitat use, survival, and daily movements of 55 radio-tagged juvenile Wood Thrushes on a managed forest in the central Appalachian mountains of West Virginia during 2004 to …
