Cultural Assimilation, Appropriation And Commercialization: Authenticity In Rap Music, 1997-2004., Jonathan P. Tummons Jan 2008

Cultural Assimilation, Appropriation And Commercialization: Authenticity In Rap Music, 1997-2004., Jonathan P. Tummons

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the changes in authenticity in rap lyrics between 1997 and 2004. Throughout its American history, Black music has expressed the lived experiences, the psychological realities, of Africans in diaspora and has always functioned to help create, negotiate and maintain cultural identity or “Blackness”. Within the last 20 years, rap music has undergone a tremendous amount of commercialization and appropriation by capitalistic culture industries and their largely white consumer base which has resulted in the widespread assimilation of black cultural expression into popular (white) culture. Rap artists increasingly invoke their authenticity as a way of preserving their cultural …

The Design Of An Expert System To Aid In The Selection Of A Wood Fired Boiler System., Melissa L. Morris Jan 2008

The Design Of An Expert System To Aid In The Selection Of A Wood Fired Boiler System., Melissa L. Morris

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Currently most industrial and institutional facilities rely on fossil fuels to power their boiler systems. As the quantity of these non-renewable resources is depleted, and the demand for them continues to exist their cost is expected to rise in the future, making alternative fuels economical. This work discusses the development of an expert system to help the operators of such facilities examine the feasibility of implementing a wood fired boiler system. The expert system software acquires information about the current facility via user input and uses that information to determine the optimal boiler type and size. The system also examines …

Application Of Lidar-Derived Dems And Their By-Products For Geomorphic Assessment From Stream-Reach To Watershed Scales: Horseshoe Run, Wv., Justin Beau Downing Jan 2008

Application Of Lidar-Derived Dems And Their By-Products For Geomorphic Assessment From Stream-Reach To Watershed Scales: Horseshoe Run, Wv., Justin Beau Downing

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The application of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) for geomorphic assessment at a range of scales has increased over the past two decades. Before the advent of LiDAR, DEMs were generated using topographic maps or aerial photographs. The resulting grid-based DEMs generally had coarse resolutions ranging from 10 m to 30 m. Research has shown these resolutions to be acceptable when investigating large areas, but fail to provide adequate resolution for finer scale geomorphic assessment. LiDAR technology allows the creation of much finer resolution DEMs, ranging from 0.5 m to 6 m, depending on the sensor used. The Canaan Valley Institute …

Electrical Effects And Thermal Stability Of Plasma Damage In Aluminum Gallium Nitride Alloys., Ahad Ali Syed Jan 2008

Electrical Effects And Thermal Stability Of Plasma Damage In Aluminum Gallium Nitride Alloys., Ahad Ali Syed

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The focus of this thesis is the electrical effects and thermal stability of plasma damage in AlGaN alloys. The effects of surface treatment using Ar and Cl2 /BCl3 inductively coupled plasmas on the rectifying characteristics of Pt/Au contacts to AlxGa1−xN (x=0– 0.5) were investigated. Plasma treatment increased the conductivity of GaN and Al0.1Ga0.9N surfaces, making the rectifying contacts into Ohmic contacts. For higher Al content AlGaN, the Schottky diodes turned leaky after Cl2 /BCl3 plasma treatment, where damage creation and etching occur simultaneously, whereas the diodes become more rectifying upon Ar plasma exposure, in which plasma damage accumulates. A time …

A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao Jan 2008

A New Method For Detection And Classification Of Out-Of-Control Signals In Autocorrelated Multivariate Processes., Tao Zhao

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Autocorrelation results in too many out-of-control false alarms when traditional T2 control charts are used in practice. In this research, a vector autoregressive (VAR) based T 2 control chart is built to improve the effectiveness of the traditional T2 control charts when variables are autocorrelated and cross-correlated. Datasets generated by a SAS program are used to test the performance of the proposed method. Computational results showed that the proposed method outperforms the ARIMA based residual T2 control chart with respect to identification accuracy and average run length. Also, the results showed that the proposed method with principal components analysis is …

(Trans)Forming Belief, Transforming Desire: An Analysis Of Conversion And Belief In Contemporary American Fiction., Anthony Zias Jan 2008

(Trans)Forming Belief, Transforming Desire: An Analysis Of Conversion And Belief In Contemporary American Fiction., Anthony Zias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation locates a problem in poststructuralism's approach to the concept of believing. Since poststructuralism establishes itself as an intellectual inquiry that deconstructs not only particular beliefs but also the act of believing, many poststructuralists overlook the fact that their own philosophical premises must be initially believed before their critical interventions gain credence. These critics do not explain how belief, as such, emerges within people or why people adopt one belief system over another. To address this aporia, this dissertation reviews both Jacques Derrida's conceptualization of the decision as a choice divorced from rational calculation of evidence and J.F. Lyotard's …

Analytical Solution To The Wave Equation With Discrete Pressure Sources: A Model For The Rijke Tube, Eduardo G. Perez Jan 2008

Analytical Solution To The Wave Equation With Discrete Pressure Sources: A Model For The Rijke Tube, Eduardo G. Perez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Despite of having been studied for several decades the phenomena of combustion instabilities are not well understood. Pressure waves due to the combustion instabilities can become violent being detrimental for both the performance and combustor life. A good prediction of the pressure distribution inside the combustor is important in order to prevent theoccurrence of this phenomenon. In this work a technique for solving the wave equation with discrete sources (or sinks) using the Green's functions was developed. One and two-dimensional approaches for cylindrical and Cartesian coordinates withconstant speed of sound were solved. Also the case of one-dimensional axially varying temperature …

Authentic Education And The Innate Health Model: An Approach To Optimizing The Education Of The Whole Person., M Deborah Larimer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To test the premise that optimal learning and development require a constructivist education of the whole person, this research examined outcomes of instruction using an approach called Innate Health which claims that awareness of the dynamics of thought will stimulate healthy, productive behavior (presumably innate). While much has been written about socio-moral education; little research has addressed the role of thought, innate qualities, or attention to the whole person as mediators of learning and development. Two self-report scales (Understanding of Experience Scale, and Lifestyle Assessment Scale) were constructed to measure outcomes of instruction among participants in Innate Health seminars. Data …

Potomac's Valley Shall Become A Domain We Create: Commercialism And The South Branch Valley, 1750-1800., Elizabeth Oliver Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Farmers in the South Branch Valley in Hampshire County, Virginia (present-day Hardy County, West Virginia), created a commercial agricultural system that made the South Branch Valley the center for beef production in eighteenth-century western Virginia. These farmers improved the traditional methods of cattle raising and driving to increase their profit and, despite the remoteness and isolation of this Appalachian region, maintained important family and economic ties to eastern markets. The first white settlers came to this frontier region with a pre-existing commercial orientation, raising livestock and other agricultural products for external markets, as well as local exchange markets. The coming …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Conventional government cost-share programs to reduce agricultural nonpoint source pollution are falling short of water quality goals in the U.S. This dissertation presents lessons learned from the first 15 months of a field experiment that tests an alternative to conventional government programs. This alternative pays farmers as a group based on quantity and ambient quality of water flowing from their watershed. Farmers decide what, if any, abatement action to take and how to allocate payments among themselves. Three research questions were examined: (1) Prior to initiation of a field experiment, can water prices and a watershed payment formula be computed …

Other Hispanic An Analysis Of Nyc Honduran Political Participation., Maximo Geraldo Martinez Jan 2008

Other Hispanic An Analysis Of Nyc Honduran Political Participation., Maximo Geraldo Martinez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Studies conducted on Latino immigrants and political participation primarily focuses on their large population groups such as Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Mexicans. However, this study centers on Central American Hondurans, also a group with substantial populations in U.S. cities. The theoretical idea central in examining this query is that U.S. Honduran political participation is related to their ethnic identity, association with churches in their U.S. communities, the extent of financial ties, and political participation (experiences) in their country of origin. This study will also add to the understanding of differences evident in U.S. Latino political participation. Uncovering differences of this …

Working For Independence: The Failure Of New Deal Politics In A Rural Industrial Place., Lou Martin Lou Jan 2008

Working For Independence: The Failure Of New Deal Politics In A Rural Industrial Place., Lou Martin Lou

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The industrial workers of Hancock County developed a distinctively rural working-class culture during the twentieth century. The county remained largely untouched by industry until the beginning of the twentieth century. Industrialists created factory towns out of farmland along the Ohio River, partly to capitalize on the advantages they perceived that the countryside offered: cheap land, a new and loyal workforce, the absence of established working-class organizations, and the opportunity to create more perfect factories and factory towns. New steel mills and potteries quickly transformed the county. Industrialization quadrupled the county's population and attracted migrants from north-central Appalachia, the American South, …

The Relative Efficacy Of Three Procedures For Reducing Canine Responding., Megan E. Maxwell Jan 2008

The Relative Efficacy Of Three Procedures For Reducing Canine Responding., Megan E. Maxwell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Three response reduction procedures commonly employed in applied behavior analysis are extinction, differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior (DRO) schedules, and time-based schedules of event delivery such as the fixed-time (FT) schedule. Each of these three procedures holds promise for the amelioration of canine behavior problems, yet none has been studied systematically, alone or in comparison with other procedures, with domestic dogs. In this research, the buoy-touching responses of eleven dogs were shaped and maintained using edible reinforcers. Responding then was exposed either to extinction, a fixed or an escalating DRO schedule, or an FT schedule. Extinction reduced responding more rapidly than the escalating DRO …

An Examination Of Collectivist And Individualistic Young Adult Women's Future Goals And Their Evaluation., Clare M. Mehta Jan 2008

An Examination Of Collectivist And Individualistic Young Adult Women's Future Goals And Their Evaluation., Clare M. Mehta

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

It is important to understand how young adult women select and evaluate goals for the future because in spite of having a variety of available career options, women are still not entering all careers at an equal rate to men (Hakim, 2006), and are primarily engaging in homemaking (Marks & Houston, 2003) or embarking on careers that are considered to be traditionally feminine, such as teaching or nursing (Kmec, 2005; Okamoto & England, 1999). As such, the present study had two primary research objectives, (1) to quantitatively investigate the career- marriage- and child-related goals that young adult women in an …

State Economic Policy And Development In Kenya: A Study Of African Entrepreneurship In Kisii Township And Its Environs, 1930-1978, Kennedy Mokaya Moindi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores African initiatives in the small scale business sector within Kisii town and the larger region of Gusiiland in the period from 1930 to 1978. Despite the transition to a market economy with the onset of colonial rule at the end of 19th Century, African participation in trading activities within Kisii town and other market centers had remained minimal up to 1930. The slow integration of Gusiiland into mainstream colonial economic production before the 1930s was mainly attributed to its relative geographical isolation from major centers of economic production in Kenya together with the violent nature that characterized …

The β-Tubulin Gene As A Means To Discriminate Species And Verify Evolutionary Patterns Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi., Zola Msiska Jan 2008

The β-Tubulin Gene As A Means To Discriminate Species And Verify Evolutionary Patterns Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi., Zola Msiska

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associating with 80% of vascular plant families increase uptake of nutrients and water in plants, help to stabilize soil aggregates and improve soil aeration, water percolation and carbon storage. Phylogeny of AMF based on rDNA sequences is in conflict with morphology-based phylogeny. The aim of the present study was to examine a protein encoding gene, β-tubulin, in order to test conclusions drawn from rDNA sequences and morphological data. Inverse-PCR was used to amplify full-length β-tubulin genes of Gigaspora gigantea and Glomus clarum. The gene in both species is organized into five exons and four introns encoding …

Fibroblast Growth Factor -19: A Novel Factor That Inhibits Hepatic Fatty Acid Synthesis., Sushant Bhatnagar Jan 2008

Fibroblast Growth Factor -19: A Novel Factor That Inhibits Hepatic Fatty Acid Synthesis., Sushant Bhatnagar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous studies have shown that administration of fibroblast growth factor-19 (FGF-19) reverses diabetes, hepatic steatosis, hyperlipidemia, and adipose accretion in animal models of obesity. To investigate the mechanism for this effect, we determined whether FGF-19 modulated hepatic fatty acid synthesis, a key process controlling glucose tolerance and triacylglycerol accumulation in liver, blood, and adipose tissue. Incubating primary hepatocyte cultures with recombinant FGF-19 suppressed the ability of insulin to stimulate fatty acid synthesis. This effect was associated with a reduction in the expression of lipogenic enzymes. FGF-19 also suppressed the insulin-induced expression of sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), a key transcriptional …

Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles Jan 2008

Is Congruence Dead? An Examination Of The Correlation Between Holland's Congruence And Job Satisfaction Using Improved Methodology., Shannon Marie Bowles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Job satisfaction is considered to be the most important and frequently examined outcome variable in congruence research. The assumption that congruence results in job satisfaction is fundamental to Holland's theory; however, the empirical evidence predominantly indicates that the congruence - job satisfaction correlation is, at best, equivocal. There is a movement within vocational psychology that the congruence construct is “dead” as a viable theoretical concept and that the field should abandon Holland's theory. This idea does not exist without significant argument, however. It has been recognized widely that congruence has not fared better in the empirical research literature because methodological …

The Role Of Id2 Phosphorylation At Serine 5 In C2c12 Myoblasts., David Christopher Butler Jan 2008

The Role Of Id2 Phosphorylation At Serine 5 In C2c12 Myoblasts., David Christopher Butler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Inhibitor of differentiation protein-2 (Id2) is a dominant negative helix-loop-helix (HLH) protein, and a positive regulator of proliferation, in various cells. The N-terminal region of Id2 contains a consensus cdk2 phosphorylation sequence SPVR, which may be involved with the induction of apoptosis, at least in myeloid 32d.3 cells. However, the role of Id2 phosphorylation at serine 5 in skeletal muscle cells is unknown. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine if the phosphorylation of Id2 at serine 5 alters its cellular localization and role in apoptosis in C2C12 myoblasts. Overexpression of wild type Id2 decreased MyoD protein expression, which …
