Analytical Determination Of Strain Energy For The Studies Of Coal Mine Bumps, Qiang Xu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coal mine bumps occur in most countries where coal is mined by underground methods. Coal bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of strain energy associated with energy changes that take place with progressive mining. This research is conducted to study the strain energy effect on coal bump problems associated with underground coal mining. The roofs are modeled as elastic beams on continuous elastic foundations subject to exponentially distributed abutment stress. Elastic beam theory is applied to develop analytical solutions for deflection of single-layer roof models. Methods for analyzing double layer roof and double layer foundation models are also discussed. …

Effects Of Response Effort, Delay, And Stimulus Changes On The Sunk -Cost Effect, James W. Diller
Effects Of Response Effort, Delay, And Stimulus Changes On The Sunk -Cost Effect, James W. Diller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The sunk-cost effect is a decision-making fallacy that has its origins in the discipline in economics. In general, sunk-cost situations are typified by the presence of an initial investment that is followed by behavioral persistence, especially in the face of progressively worsening outcomes. This fallacy occurs when individuals use past expenditures (i.e., sunk costs) rather than future costs to guide decisions. Although there is a growing body of literature involving human participants, relatively little work has been done examining the variables that govern the sunk-cost effect in nonhuman subjects. The present experiments examined effects of response effort, delay, and stimulus …

Exploring Electron Transfer In Myoglobin-Based Transistors, Debin Li
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Electron transfer in proteins is an issue of fundamental importance in biochemistry. This is especially true for proteins whose functionality relies on redox reactions, which by definition means that electron exchange must take place between the protein and another protein, a cofactor, or the external environment. An important example consists of proteins containing heme groups, where the iron ion in the protoporphyrin ring changes valence state depending on the whether an electron is accepted or given up by the protein. Much experimental work has been carried out since the late 1950s in order to develop an understanding of protein electron …

Synthesis, Characterization And Photocatalytic Applications Of One Dimensional Titanium Dioxide Nanostructures., Jin Wang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
TiO2 are extensively used in the photocatalysts and photoelectrochemical devices for solar energy harvesting, hydrogen generation and environment remediation. The photocatalysis efficiency of TiO2 depends on the electron-hole separation and the electron-hole recombination processes. It remains a challenge to improve the generation efficiency of electron and holes and to reduce the electron-hole recombination rate. Furthermore, the large bandgap of pristine TiO2 limits its photocatalytic activity to the ultraviolet regime that accounts for about 5% of the spectral output of sunlight. This research aims to facilitate the photocatalytic applications of TiO2 through accomplishing three specific tasks: (i) synthesize one-dimensional (1-D) TiO …

Route And Grade Sensitive Modeling Of Fuel Efficiency And Emissions For Diesel Buses, Abm Siddiqur Rahman Khan
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The study first analyzed the characteristics of twenty-three chassis duty cycles to determine the most important parameters that affected FC and emissions. The analysis showed that cycle properties such as standard deviation of average speed, percentage of idle, characteristic acceleration, kinetic intensity, and stops per unit distance were closely related with cycle average speed. A cycle with low average speed contained stop-and-go behavior, with multiple accelerations and decelerations, whereas a high vehicle speed cycle was steadier. In this way, average speed was found to be inter-related to other cycle properties.;The experimental data were collected on a subset of twenty-three test …
