An Experimental Analysis Of Preference For Rate Building, Andrew R. Lightner
An Experimental Analysis Of Preference For Rate Building, Andrew R. Lightner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Educational research suggests that rate-building procedures produce superior academic performance and are preferred by participants when compared to traditional methods. However, these studies have not controlled for critical variables, such as practice, that might influence preference and performance. The current study compared two conditions using behavioral performance and preference measures; one condition had a correct response rate criterion and the other had an overall correct response criterion. Reinforcement and feedback were held constant across conditions. Most participants preferred the condition that did not have a rate criterion. Performance outcomes produced by the two conditions were not substantially different. This implies …
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Fit-Testing Of Hearing Protection Devices In Northern West Virginia Coal Mines, Alexa Michele Quinn
Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Fit-Testing Of Hearing Protection Devices In Northern West Virginia Coal Mines, Alexa Michele Quinn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fit testing is frequently described as a solution to the problem of detecting ineffective hearing protection devices and thus reducing noise exposures in workers. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a fit-test conducted at mine sites with cap mounted ear muffs actually worn by the tested miners. The dependent variable was noise reduction, and the independent variables included subject, noise source frequency distribution, orientation to noise source, instruction, and earmuff brand.;A series of eight 30-second tests were conducted for each worker to evaluate the effects of the independent variables. The tests were not randomized due to time constraints. Each of …

Studies Of Chemomechanical Gels And Collective Behavior In Chemical Systems, Zhaoyang Huang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The synthesis, structure and properties of stimuli responsive gels are reviewed. A flow through reactor is constructed by attaching a secondary chamber to the output of a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The dynamical behavior of the primary and secondary chambers is characterized by carrying out the bromate-sulfite-ferrocyanide reaction in the reactors. The dynamical behavior of the secondary chamber was found to mimic that of the primary chamber. In addition, the secondary chamber offers spatially homogeneous and non-stirred pH oscillations for chemomechanical oscillators and walkers. Chemomechanical oscillators are obtained by placing poly(NIPAAm-co-MAAc) gel rods of diameters less than 530 mum …

The aim of this study is to develop numerical and analytical tools to model and design devices based on the wave propagation in piezoelectric layered media; particularly, ultrasound transducers for medical imaging and acoustic sensors for biological applications.;Single-element …
Community Social Status Effects On Migration Outcomes, Mark Gerald Middleton
Community Social Status Effects On Migration Outcomes, Mark Gerald Middleton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Using the geocoded version of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79), this study examines patterns of internal migration in the United States by investigating individual residential mobility between low socioeconomic and high socioeconomic counties. Specifically, through the use of data between the years of 1979 and 2002, this study asks three questions. First, if the sending community is socioeconomically different than the receiving community where the migrant lives during middle age, does this show upward, downward or lateral status movement? Second, do migrants tend to move from less desirable communities to communities with higher socioeconomic standards of living? …

Image Analysis Of Circulating Fluidized Bed Hydrodynamics, David Kent Casleton
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The goal of this thesis is to design methods to estimate the local concentration and velocity of particles observed in digital videos of the inner wall of a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser. Understanding the dynamics of these rapidly moving particles will allow researchers to design cleaner and more efficient CFB facilities. However, the seemingly random motion exhibited by the particles in three dimensions, coupled with the varying image quality, make it difficult to extract the required information from the images. Given a video sequence, a method for detecting particles and tracking their spatial location is developed. By exploiting the …

Measuring And Changing Negative Stuttering Stereotypes In Adolescents, Timothy W. Flynn
Measuring And Changing Negative Stuttering Stereotypes In Adolescents, Timothy W. Flynn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Stuttering is known to carry stereotypes, e.g., that people who stutter are nervous, anxious, and shy. Research has shown that negative stereotypes about people who stutter exist within the general population. Moreover, negative stereotypes exist among teachers, students, speech-language pathologists, and even the parents of people who stutter. While public opinion of stuttering does not vary dramatically between populations, the ways in which we might change it does. Research has shown that educational videos, books, and classes about stuttering do not appear to significantly alter public opinion positively.;This study compared the effectiveness of two forms of advocacy, a live presentation …
Cerulean Warbler Population And Habitat Changes Along Breeding Bird Survey Routes In The Central Appalachians, Patrick Michael Mcelhone
Cerulean Warbler Population And Habitat Changes Along Breeding Bird Survey Routes In The Central Appalachians, Patrick Michael Mcelhone
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Analysis of North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data has identified the Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica cerulea) as a species of conservation concern with an annual population decline of 4.1% from 1966--2007. BBS data has shown persistent declines for Cerulean Warblers in their core breeding range of the Central Appalachians. No previous studies have examined the relationship between habitat change and Cerulean Warbler abundance at BBS stops, and/or whether BBS declines reflect changes occurring only at sampled routes or reflect regional Cerulean Warbler population declines. The objectives were to (1) quantify the effects of land cover and forest fragmentation metrics on …

Predictive Modeling Techniques With Application To The Cerulean Warbler (Dendroica Cerulea) In The Appalachian Mountains Bird Conservation Region, Matthew Buhrl Shumar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Many statistical approaches have been used for developing predictive models for wildlife presence/absence and abundance, each with varying levels of accuracy and complexity. As concerns for declining species intensify and anthropogenic impacts on habitats increase, the ability to quickly quantify and map species distributions and abundances over large regions will become increasingly important. To date, there is no set of best practices for modeling specific wildlife groups. My primary objectives with this thesis were to (1) compare model techniques for ease of use and accuracy, and (2) compare resolution of species occurrence data and its effect on model accuracy.;For the …

The Effect Of Multiple Usages Of Nickel-Titanium Rotary Endodontic Files On Cutting Efficiency, Albert L. Tomsic Jr.
The Effect Of Multiple Usages Of Nickel-Titanium Rotary Endodontic Files On Cutting Efficiency, Albert L. Tomsic Jr.
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nickel-titanium rotary (NTR) files have been used in endodontic therapy to efficiently clean and shape root canals since the early 1990's. These files are the single most expensive disposable clinical supply used in non-surgical endodontics. When NTR files are new, they are being used in their sharpest state, with the least probability of breaking and their highest cutting efficiency (CE). As they are used in successive cases in order to contain clinical expenses, an increased risk of file separation occurs, possibly along with a decreased CE.;The purpose of this study was to determine the measurable changes in CE of NTR …
Predictors Of Anticipated Parenting Efficacy In Younger Adults, Danielle K. Tomczewski
Predictors Of Anticipated Parenting Efficacy In Younger Adults, Danielle K. Tomczewski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Prior research has indicated that anticipated parenting efficacy, the degree to which individuals perceive that they will be an effective parent, predicts their later parenting competency (Coleman et al., 2002; Teti & Gelfand, 1991). Although additional correlates of parenting efficacy have been identified, such as knowledge of childhood development (Conrad, Gross, Fogg, & Ruchala, 1992) and prior contact with children (Coleman & Karraker, 2000; Williams et al., 1987), little research has examined the predictors of anticipated parenting efficacy. The current study examined anticipated parenting efficacy in a sample of 481 younger adults. Participants completed self-administered on-line surveys related to their …

Implications For The Use Of Osmia Cornifrons (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) As Pollinators, Joseph Brent White
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Japanese hornfaced bees, Osmia cornifrons (Radoszkowski) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), is a key pollinator of spring blooming fruit crops such as apple, pear and blueberry. To maximize pollination efficiency, two implications must be considered. First, diapause termination of overwintering O. cornifrons adults needs to be synchronized with the bloom of the target trees because adult bees are active as pollinators for only a few weeks. Patterns of temperature-dependent diapause termination of O. cornifrons were modeled and simulated with linear and non-linear regression analyses. Results of the study indicated the upper and lower developmental thresholds, as well as the optimum temperature for …
Design And Testing Of The Wvu Challenge X Competition Hybrid Diesel Electric Vehicle, Howard Andrew Mearns
Design And Testing Of The Wvu Challenge X Competition Hybrid Diesel Electric Vehicle, Howard Andrew Mearns
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The WVU Challenge X Team was tasked with improving the fuel economy of a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox while maintaining the stock performance of the vehicle. A through-the-road-parallel hybrid diesel-electric was implemented to accomplish this goal. The greatest potential for improvement to hybrid electric vehicle technology is in energy storage in terms of cost, size, lifespan, and efficiency. Currently, battery cost is limited by the expense of the base materials. The characteristically low power density of electrochemical energy storage rather than energy density is responsible for the size of current hybrid energy storage systems. A limited lifespan is inherent in electrochemical …
The Introduction Of Forgiveness Into A Path Analytical Model Of The Association Between Parental Divorce And Adult Attachment, Amanda L. Wheat
The Introduction Of Forgiveness Into A Path Analytical Model Of The Association Between Parental Divorce And Adult Attachment, Amanda L. Wheat
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Several factors (i.e., parental divorce, parent-child relationship quality, interparental conflict, individual forgiveness) that have been investigated separately in relation to adult romantic attachment were examined alongside family forgiveness, which has not previously explored in relation to attachment. Undergraduate students (N = 299) completed several surveys online for the current study. Several significant findings emerged when factors were considered in path models individually, and in an overall path model built on the basis of those individual model findings. Maternal and paternal social support, maternal negative interactions, and family forgiveness were moderators of parental divorce---romantic attachment relations. Based upon these findings, it …

Ion acceleration in single (Ar) and two positive ion species plasmas (Ar-Xe and He-Ar) has been investigated through laser induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements of the ion velocity distribution function (ivdf). The investigations focused on the expansion region of a helicon plasma source where, for certain operating conditions (pressure in the source less than 2 mTorr, rf driving frequency of 9.5 MHz, source axial magnetic field strength of 700 G, and expansion chamber magnetic field strength between 0 and 70 G), an electric double layer (EDL) was observed to form. In pure argon plasma, 4 cm upstream from the helicon source-expansion …
The Identification Of Molecular Guidance Cues Necessary For Development Of The Central Auditory System, David M. Howell
The Identification Of Molecular Guidance Cues Necessary For Development Of The Central Auditory System, David M. Howell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Developing neurons utilize multiple guidance cues to reach their appropriate destination. Although much is known about the anatomy and electrophysiology of auditory brainstem neurons, the molecular factors directing migration of these cells and the targeting of their axons are only beginning to be explored. Ventral cochlear nucleus (VCN) neurons have axons that project bilaterally to the superior olivary complex (SOC) in the ventral acoustic stria (VAS). The circumferential trajectory taken by developing VCN axons is similar to the path of spinal commissural neurons (SCNs). Therefore, we reasoned that netrin-DCC and slit-robo signaling systems may function, similar to SCNs, in the …
