Exploring Factors Contributing To Current Versus Former Coaching Status Of Women Coaches: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective., Justine Vosloo
Exploring Factors Contributing To Current Versus Former Coaching Status Of Women Coaches: A Social Exchange Theory Perspective., Justine Vosloo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The percentage of women coaches at the helm of women’s sports teams has dropped from 90% in 1972, to 42.6% in 2010 (Carpenter & Acosta, 2010). Previous research has found that women coaches experience discrimination (Greenhaus et al., 1990) social stigma, and homophobia (Griffin, 1998). Difficulties with work-life balance have been identified as a barrier to coaching. Mentoring has been positive for the development of career satisfaction, commitment and positive job attitudes (Ragins et al., 2000), however, the role of mentoring in retaining women coaches needs exploration. This study used social exchange theory to determine if perceived costs/benefits of coaching, …
Lift Augmentation Using A Naca 0018 Airfoil With Circulation Control., Steven L. Hard
Lift Augmentation Using A Naca 0018 Airfoil With Circulation Control., Steven L. Hard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Circulation control (CC) has been demonstrated to enhance the lift force generated by a lifting surface without altering the physical angle-of-attack. Ongoing research at the Center for Industrial Research Applications (CIRA) involves the application of circulation control to vertical axis wind turbines (CC-VAWT) for increased power output. A NACA 0018 airfoil is modified to incorporate a rounded trailing edge with a radius of 0.25”and tested in the West Virginia University closed-loop subsonic wind tunnel. Augmentation of the two-dimensional lift coefficient associated with this circulation control design is measured using surface pressure integration from zero angle-of-attack through the stall point and …

Technique, Aesthetics, And Style In Eighteenth-Century Compositional Pedagogy: Beethoven's Pedagogical Influences., Sean E. Beachy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research project presents a critical analysis of the published scholarship with regard to technique, aesthetics, and style as part of the pedagogy of composition, with a focus on Ludwig van Beethoven and his teachers, and the evolution of compositional pedagogy that occurred in the eighteenth century. In the continually evolving world of composition, technique, aesthetics, and style have remained three important issues with regard to compositional pedagogy. Evidence of this importance is found in pedagogical relationships as early as the sixteenth century. The manner in which composition was taught also remained consistent throughout Johann Sebastian Bach’s pedagogical associations as …
Extracellular Matrix Mediated Cartilage Regeneration: A Novel Three-Dimensional In Vitro Microenvironment To Facilitate Cell Expansion And Chondrogenesis, Fan He
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Joint articular cartilage is vulnerable for degenerative disease after trauma due to the limited self-healing ability. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are considered a promising source for cartilage repair and regenerative medicine because of their excellent capacities of self-renewal and multipotent differentiation. Conventional in vitro expansion system, however, limits the utilization of MSCs for cartilage regeneration because in monolayer culture MSCs rapidly lose their self-renewal ability and differentiation potential. The lack of proper microenvironment in the current two-dimensional expansion system is attributed to the loss of self-renewal and multipotent differentiation in MSCs. Three-dimensional (3D) cell-deposited extracellular matrix (ECM) provides a novel …
Investigation Of Egr And Fuel Property Effects On Advanced Combustion Strategies Using In-Cylinder Combustion Analyses, Jason D. Ice
Investigation Of Egr And Fuel Property Effects On Advanced Combustion Strategies Using In-Cylinder Combustion Analyses, Jason D. Ice
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Advanced combustion has progressively become a topic of interest as government regulations have stringently reduced the allowable limits of engine-out emissions from internal combustion engines. Advanced combustion can typically be classified as homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) or premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI). In HCCI combustion, a well mixed fuel and air solution is spontaneously combusted, thus providing a homogeneous burn throughout the combustion process. By having an evenly distributed, homogeneous burn, fuel economy is not only significantly increased, but both oxides of nitrogen (NO x) and particulate matter (PM) can drastically be reduced from that of conventional combustion. HCCI …
Effectiveness Of Strategies For Solving Everyday Problems During Early And Later Adulthood: A Reexamination Of The Everyday Problem Solving Inventory, Joseph P. Mcfall
Effectiveness Of Strategies For Solving Everyday Problems During Early And Later Adulthood: A Reexamination Of The Everyday Problem Solving Inventory, Joseph P. Mcfall
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Within the everyday problem-solving literature, a small number of studies have examined effectiveness as a problem-solving outcome measure. Effectiveness is a method of determining the quality of strategies used to solve ill-defined problems. Knowing the effectiveness of a problem-solving strategy can help determine whether an age differences in the use of that strategy also indicates better everyday outcomes for one age group. Of the few studies that have examined age differences in effective problem solving, none have systematically assessed the dimensions that make some strategies effective and others ineffective for various problem situations. In addition, a variety of methodological considerations …

Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee
Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The results of the investigation into the role of CK2 and PP2A in Drosophila position effect variegation (PEV) and chromatin modification are presented here. PEV is seen when a gene normally found in euchromatin is placed in close proximity to heterochromatin. The propensity of heterochromatin to spread down the chromosome often results in inactivation of the displaced gene by compaction into heterochromatin. The study presented here utilized two different PEV reporter genes for investigating the role of two posttranslational modifying enzymes, the kinase CK2 and the phosphatase PP2A in chromatin formation. The reporter genes used in this study encode for …
Imputation Methods For Dealing With Missing Scores In Biometric Fusion, Yaohui Ding
Imputation Methods For Dealing With Missing Scores In Biometric Fusion, Yaohui Ding
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Biometrics refers to the automatic recognition of individuals based on their physical or behavioral characteristics. Multimodal biometric systems, which consolidate multiple biometric characteristics of the same person, can overcome several practical problems that occur in single modality biometric systems. While fusion can be accomplished at various levels in a multimodal biometric system, score level fusion is commonly used as it offers a good trade-off between fusion complexity and data availability. However, missing scores affect the implementation of most biometric fusion rules. While there are several techniques for handling missing data, the imputation scheme, which replaces missing values with predicted values, …

The Effects Of Fungal Pigments On Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectral Peak Formation, Amanda Dawn Buskirk
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fungi are ubiquitous microorganisms that commonly cause diseases with high mortality rates in immunocompromised hosts. In order to successfully treat the infection and subsequently decrease mortality rates, it is necessary to rapidly identify the causal organism(s) and promptly begin the proper treatment. Common identification methods, such as viable culture characterization, are often time consuming or not species-specific, as is the case with many molecular or immunodiagnostic assays. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used to discriminate between many clinically relevant microorganisms. Recently, MALDI-TOF MS has been used to discriminate between monilaceous fungal species, however, darkly pigmented …
Role Of Protein Kinase Ck2 And Phosphatase Pp2a In Notch-Mediated Lateral Inhibition, Anasua Bose
Role Of Protein Kinase Ck2 And Phosphatase Pp2a In Notch-Mediated Lateral Inhibition, Anasua Bose
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Notch signaling pathway is highly conserved in vertebrates and invertebrates and regulates binary cell fate specifications in diverse developmental contexts. In a process termed lateral inhibition, Notch signaling restricts a particular cell fate to a single cell from a group of multi-potential cells. This mechanism ensures precision in cell fate assignations, which are vital for histogenesis and organogenesis. Studies during Drosophila neurogenesis, specifically development of the compound eye and the mechanosensory bristles, have provided the most detailed insights into the underlying mechanisms. During this process, Notch signaling results in the selection of single R8 photoreceptors or bristle sensory organ …
