Aging-Dependent Effects Of Repetitive Loading Exercise And Antioxidant Supplementation On Oxidative Stress In Skeletal Muscle, Michael J. Ryan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Aging is associated with a reduced ability to buffer oxidants along with an increase in oxidant production, resulting in chronic oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a putative factor responsible for reducing function ability of skeletal muscle and increasing oxidative damage. The objective of this set of investigations was to evaluate the efficacy of reducing oxidative stress on improving muscle function the adaptive response of skeletal muscle to repetitive loading exercise in aging rodents. To achieve this objective, three methods of reducing oxidative stress were utilized; the antioxidant vitamins E&C were used to buffer oxidants, the nutraceutical resveratrol was used to …

Stream Fish Metacommunity And Metapopulation Ecology In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Roy Worth Martin May 2010

Stream Fish Metacommunity And Metapopulation Ecology In A Mined Appalachian Watershed, Roy Worth Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Chapter one is a direct empirical evaluation of metacommunity theory using stream fishes in a heavily mined and least impaired region of the Monongahela River basin. Metacommunity ecology, a new multi-scale paradigm, has provided important insights into mechanisms controlling regional patterns of assemblage structure. Metacommunity ecology offers four competing hypothetical models---neutral, patch dynamic, species sorting, and mass effect---each differing slightly in its underlying mechanistic framework.;Our results overwhelmingly supported the mass effect metacommunity model, which suggests that regional patterns of diversity are maintained by local habitat heterogeneity and dispersal among local assemblages. However, our findings also indicated that natural communities are …

Beyond The Ritual Of Exchange: The Culture Of Alienation Shared Between Soldiers Along The Rappahannock During The Winter Of 1862--63, Lauren Kristin Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Between December 1862 and April 1863, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and Union Army of the Potomac remained stalemated across from one another on the Rappahannock River. Following the victory at the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Confederate Army held the city while the Union forces remained across the river in Falmouth, Virginia. Soldiers on both sides had several reasons for discontent at this point in the war. The larger causes that drove these men to enlist and fight faded as larger political issues, incompetent commanders, and the difficulties of camp life intensified. Union and Confederate soldiers felt infringement on …

Systematics And Evolutionary Paleoecology Of Crinoids From The St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian, Meramecian) Of The Illinois Basin, Lewis Anderson Cook May 2010

Systematics And Evolutionary Paleoecology Of Crinoids From The St. Louis Limestone (Mississippian, Meramecian) Of The Illinois Basin, Lewis Anderson Cook

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Very little attention has been paid to crinoids of the St. Louis Limestone since the 19th century. Now that the stratigraphic boundaries of the formation are well defined and a collection of crinoids specific to the St. Louis has become available, updated systematics and evolutionary paleoecology is possible.;Previous work recognized a significant transition in the macroevolution of crinoids that occurred during the Mississippian Period. The diversity of crinoid taxa changed substantially from faunas dominated by camerates and primitive cladids to those dominated by advanced cladids. Much of that change took place during the Meramecian Stage, which includes the St. Louis …

Comprehensive Analysis Of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate And Gamma-Hydroxyvalerate, Jennifer Wiseman Mercer May 2010

Comprehensive Analysis Of Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate And Gamma-Hydroxyvalerate, Jennifer Wiseman Mercer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) and gamma-hydroxyvalerate (GHV) are suspected agents of drug facilitated sexual assault. Research is needed to improve detection methods for both drugs for a range of instrumentation commonly available to forensic chemists. GHB evidence may be introduced to the laboratory in the form of a powder, solution, beverage, or biological sample; thus a key theme of this research is overcoming matrix effects for comprehensive analyses. As GHV is not commercially available, it was synthesized for analysis via base hydrolysis of gamma-valerolactone (GVL). The results of the synthesis were confirmed using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H1NMR) …

Predicting Restoration Of Competence To Stand Trial: Demographic, Clinical, And Legal Variables, Tracy A. Thomas May 2010

Predicting Restoration Of Competence To Stand Trial: Demographic, Clinical, And Legal Variables, Tracy A. Thomas

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Introduction. Each year, a considerable number of defendants are referred for competency to stand trial evaluation. Of those judged incompetent to stand trial, a majority are regarded as having a significant likelihood of being restored to competency. While a majority of individuals are restored to competency after restoration treatment, others are deemed incompetent to stand trial and non-restorable. For individuals deemed non-restorable, a protracted stay in a forensic-psychiatric hospital or less-restrictive placement is the norm. This often lengthy period of inpatient commitment expends a great amount of staff and monetary resources. Rationale. In order that scarce monetary and staff resources …

Adult Children Of Alcoholics' Perceptions Of Communicative Exchanges With Family Members And Outsiders, Kerry Byrnes Jan 2010

Adult Children Of Alcoholics' Perceptions Of Communicative Exchanges With Family Members And Outsiders, Kerry Byrnes

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Millions of children grow up in alcoholic homes. For these children, their lives are changed forever. As a result of being socialized in a home in which at least one parent is an alcoholic, the children suffer with a number of negative consequences. Children of alcoholics (COAs) have cognitive difficulty and often do not excel in scholastic endeavors. It is also difficult for COAs to form lasting relationships with others outside the family. Because they are often socialized in a home in which secrecy is advocated, creating relationships and fully disclosing about experiences proves to be challenging. As a result, …

State Spatial Practices And Uneven Development: Flexible Rescaling In Appalachia, Jacquelyn Jordon Core Jan 2010

State Spatial Practices And Uneven Development: Flexible Rescaling In Appalachia, Jacquelyn Jordon Core

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Geographic theories regarding uneven development, including Neil Smith's convergence of Marxist theory and spatial development and David Harvey's development of scalar fix and later conceptual development of the process of capital accumulation, historically have focused primarily on how and why uneven development occurs. Research to date has provided only a cursory examination of what role, if any, the state plays in impacting uneven development, has not endeavored to characterize the state as an active, purposeful spatial player in the process of uneven development, and has not conceptualized how the state impacts uneven development through spatial practices, if the state does …

Comprehensive Tobacco Control Policy Regimes And Population Health: Assessing Causal Loops, Stephanie J. Frisbee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tobacco products remain among the most controversial consumer products of all time: cigarettes are the only legal product that, when used as intended, are lethal. The global and individual burden attributable to the primary use of tobacco, or secondary or tertiary exposure to cigarette smoke, whether measured by morbidity, mortality, or economic costs, is substantial. With the combined efforts of scientific research, public health and policy advocates, the image and use of tobacco products has undergone profound change. However, while much has been achieved regarding the attitudinal, behavioral, and policy changes needed to diminish the individual, social, and economic costs …

Essays On Open Market Operations, The Maturity Composition Of The Public Debt, And The Term Structure, Seth J. Kopchak Jan 2010

Essays On Open Market Operations, The Maturity Composition Of The Public Debt, And The Term Structure, Seth J. Kopchak

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation addresses issues related to liquidity and market determination of interest rates. Chapters two and three address the market for overnight loans of federal funds. Deviations of the federal funds rate from its target can be interpreted as demand innovations for federal funds. These demand shocks can be modeled as an unobserved component and estimated using the Kalman filter to identify liquidity effects. The effect of a {dollar}1 billion increase in the average sum of open market operations over a one-week period results in a decrease of the federal funds rate by about 12 basis points. In addition, unexpected …

On The Mechanisms Underlying Neural Repression By E(Spl)M8 In Drosophila, Bhaskar Kahali Jan 2010

On The Mechanisms Underlying Neural Repression By E(Spl)M8 In Drosophila, Bhaskar Kahali

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Notch signaling is an evolutionary conserved pathway that mediates binary cell-fate specification throughout animal development. Through a process termed lateral inhibition, Notch signaling drives two equipotent cells to adopt distinct fates. Binary cell-fate determination has been exceptionally well studied during Drosophila neurogenesis, particularly, in eye and bristle development. In the eye, Notch mediates the selection of R8 photoreceptors from clusters of R8 precursors by antagonizing the activity of the proneural activator Atonal (Ato). In the bristle, Notch drives the selection of the sensory organ precursors (SOP's) from a group of equipotential cells that expressed the proneural activators encoded by the …

Brook Trout Response To Canopy And Large Woody Debris Manipulations In Appalachian Streams, Jonathan Ma. Niles Jan 2010

Brook Trout Response To Canopy And Large Woody Debris Manipulations In Appalachian Streams, Jonathan Ma. Niles

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The forested riparian area along many central Appalachian streams contains large volumes of harvestable timber. Best management practices (BMP) and streamside management zones (SMZ) have been developed to minimize the impacts of riparian timber harvest. Large woody debris (LWD) is an important component of forested streams and its role in chemical, biological, and physical processes in streams is complex. The extraction of timber within the streamside management zone reduces the amount of material available for aquatic structure.;Three-250 m study reaches were established on eight Appalachian headwater streams. Four of the streams were assigned the treatment of having a 50% basal …

Prediction Of Shrinkage Of Concrete Containing Supplementary Cementitious Materials Using Microscale Characterizations And Composite Modeling, Arkamitra Kar Jan 2010

Prediction Of Shrinkage Of Concrete Containing Supplementary Cementitious Materials Using Microscale Characterizations And Composite Modeling, Arkamitra Kar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The inclusions of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) from industrial by products, such as slag, fly ash and silica fume in normal concrete derive several benefits. The use of SCM as partial replacement of portland cement divert these SCM from landfills, reduces CO2 emissions, and produces highly durable concrete leading to development of sustainable and green construction materials. One of the primary aspects of durability is to correctly estimate and predict the shrinkage. Since inclusions of SCM modify the volume, composition, and microstructure of the calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) of normal concrete, there are limitations on available prediction equations for shrinkage …

Transfer And Persistence Of Gunshot Residue Particles, Deanna M. Wallace Jan 2010

Transfer And Persistence Of Gunshot Residue Particles, Deanna M. Wallace

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the U.S., although this technique has been in use for many years, there is still debate as to what constitutes GSR. When the firing pin strikes the primer, the priming compound is compressed and detonates since it is sensitive to percussion. This, in turn, causes the propellant to ignite and build up pressure within the cartridge case. When sufficient pressure is built up the bullet will be forced down and out of the barrel. The compounds chosen for this formulation are mainly inorganic in nature. Many of the components will be vaporized during ignition because of the extremely high …

Low-Power Analog Circuits For Sub-Band Speech Processing, Anvesh Kumar Singireddy Jan 2010

Low-Power Analog Circuits For Sub-Band Speech Processing, Anvesh Kumar Singireddy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The need for efficient electronics has been increasing by the day, as have the constraints on power and size of the devices. Also the increase in use of mobile and wearable electronics has been leading to innovative methods to conserve power and increase functionality. The traditional approach of signal processing heavily relies on the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) hardware to perform most of the tasks, which has lead to power-hungry circuits. Use of analog front-end devices could prove to be efficient, since most of the real-world data is analog and since the DSP could be spared for more application-specific tasks …

Long Term Loading And Additional Material Properties Of Vectran Fabric For Inflatable Structure Applications, Timothy L. Weadon Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The recent production of high performance fibers has given way to the development of inflatable structures capable of fulfilling architectural needs that once required the use of metal alloys. The design of these structures requires engineers to know many properties about the unique textile of which the structure is composed. This thesis presents both testing methodology and results for a number of key properties using woven fabric constructed of Vectran fibers.;The primary source for test standards was the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Some alterations were made to standards in an effort to uniquely characterize specific properties of …

Late-Preterm And Full-Term Infant Sleep: Relations With Maternal Cognitions And Nocturnal Behaviors, Marion E. Young Jan 2010

Late-Preterm And Full-Term Infant Sleep: Relations With Maternal Cognitions And Nocturnal Behaviors, Marion E. Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Approximately 13% of infants born in the United States each year are delivered prematurely, defined as prior to 37 weeks gestation. Among these premature infants, 84% are born between 32 and 36 weeks gestation (Kelly, 2006). Past research has found that the sleep/wake patterns of late-preterm and full-term infants are different (Gossel-Symank, Grimmer, Korte, & Siegmund, 2004; Ingersoll & Thoman, 1999; Ju et al., 1991). However, little is known about psychosocial factors (i.e., maternal sleep-related cognitions and nocturnal behaviors) that may contribute to differences between late-preterm and full-term infant sleep. Few studies have investigated the relations among infant sleep behavior, …

Synthesis Of Helical And Bowl-Shaped Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds Via Benzannulated Enyne-Allenes, Bo Wen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The cascade radical cyclization of the benzannulated enyne-allenes provides an efficient synthetic pathway to a variety of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Three indeno-fused 4,5-diheteroarylphenanthrenes were synthesized by thermolysis of corresponding benzannulated enyne-allenes. Its X-ray structure shows that the substituents at C4 and C5 positions of the phenanthryl system are essentially parallel to each other and cause severe helical twist of the structures. The presence of two terpyridyl units in 2.2c allowed it to be used as a ligand for the synthesis of dinuclear ruthenium(II) bis(terpyridine) complexes possessing severe helical twists.;Several 1,4-naphthoquinone methides were synthesized via an unusual acid-catalyzed cascade cyclization sequence …

"A Dog In That Fight": The United States And The Yugoslav Wars Of Succession, 1991-1999., James M. Depalma

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

American leadership proved indispensable in resolving the Yugoslav wars of succession. Yet it would take time for the United States to accept the responsibilities of leadership. In 1991, the dissolution of Yugoslavia precipitated the wars of succession. The George H.W. Bush Administration permitted the European Community and the United Nations to direct international negotiations for the purpose of resolving the crisis. The Bush Administration's rationale was pragmatic in nature, represented by Secretary of State James Baker's infamous remark that the United States did not have "a dog in that fight. The Yugoslav wars of succession did not threaten vital American …
