Preference Reversals And Effects Of D-Amphetamine On Within-Session Delay Discounting In Rats, Christopher A. Krebs Aug 2011

Preference Reversals And Effects Of D-Amphetamine On Within-Session Delay Discounting In Rats, Christopher A. Krebs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Impulsive choice is correlated with behavioral problems such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity-disorder and can be assessed using delay-discounting procedures in which subjects choose between a smaller, more immediate reinforcer (impulsive choice) and a larger, more delayed reinforcer (self-controlled choice). A within-session delay-discounting procedure in which choice was between one food pellet delivered immediately and three food pellets delivered after increasing delays was used to examine effects of adding or subtracting delays common to both reinforcers on impulsive choice in male Sprague-Dawley rats (N = 8). For all subjects, delay discounting was observed regardless of whether delays common to both reinforcers were added …

Because of the high cost of performing investigations and research, benchmark soils are targeted and the information gleaned from …

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain Aug 2011

The Association Of Markers Of Endothelial Dysfunction And Incident Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Chronic Kidney Disease And Cardiovascular Mortality, Loretta Rena Cain

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In recent years several mechanistic animal studies have proposed new insights, including the role of endothelial dysfunction, in the pathogenesis of common cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, few studies in humans have followed up these emerging leads from animal models. Because traditional risk factors have been shown not to completely explain all the observed risk of cardiometabolic outcomes in the general population, there is a need to examine novel mechanisms such as endothelial dysfunction in population-based studies, so as to identify new ways of preventing and/or treating these diseases. …

Clinician Detection Of Depression In Late Life, Jeffrey J. Gregg Aug 2011

Clinician Detection Of Depression In Late Life, Jeffrey J. Gregg

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Depression in late life is associated with decreased cognitive functioning, increased social and functional impairment, and overall increased mortality. Because of these negative health implications, the accurate assessment of late-life depression is a critical public health issue. Prior research has consistently demonstrated that older adults typically seek and receive mental health services from general medical settings instead of mental health specialty clinics. Unfortunately, many studies have shown that primary care physicians often fail to recognize depression. In addition, older adults are less likely than younger adults to endorse symptoms of sadness or dysphoria. Those with cognitive impairment are also less …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A stratigraphic study of 15 partial outcrops of the Marcellus Shale in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland has identified six distinct lithofacies. These include grey calcareous shale (Facies 1), limestone (Facies 2), black calcareous shale (Facies 3), black non-calcareous shale (Facies 4), grey non-calcareous shale (Facies 5) and K-bentonite (Facies 6). Packages of these facies have been organized into six vertically stacked units (A-F). Deposition of the facies resulted from the rise and fall of relative sea level, which in turn shifted the location of the thermocline and affected the amount of terrigenous sediment distributed from the eastern source. Facies …

Quantifying The Reliability Of Latent Fingerprint Matching Via Signal Detection Theory, Eric J. Widman Aug 2011

Quantifying The Reliability Of Latent Fingerprint Matching Via Signal Detection Theory, Eric J. Widman

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The definition of standards in fingerprint identification is currently an issue of discussion in the field. Quantitative standards have been used in the past to provide justifications for conclusions; however, a scientific basis for relying on numerical standards alone currently does not exist. The tradeoff for this combined approach is that conclusions are based on a conclusion that is left to the judgment of the examiner and may not be repeatable. To test the implementation of thresholds for conclusion, this research studied the effects of only considering concrete data in quantitative form. In this case, signal detection theory is applied …

Development Of An Artificial Neural Network To Predict In-Use Engine Emissions, Melissa L. Morris Aug 2011

It is determined through present research and a review of relevant literature that an artificial neural network (ANN) was the most applicable modeling …

Europeanization Of The Estonian Electricity Sector: Historical Legacies And Security Concerns, Madis Ehastu Aug 2011

Europeanization Of The Estonian Electricity Sector: Historical Legacies And Security Concerns, Madis Ehastu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Estonia, generally considered a Europhile country, is showing the first signs of opposition to supranational European Union (EU) policies. This is because the EU's energy- and climate policy's trinity of policy directions---creation of an internal market, security of supply and environmental sustainability---are problematic in regard to the the case of Estonian electricity sector. The Estonian actors' response to adaptational pressures caused by the EU, a process that is generally understood as Europeanization, thus provides us with a useful case study to determine what conditions limit the EU's attempts to influence domestic politics. Research indicates that the main reason for Estonian …

Impact Of Hydraulic Fractures On Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Cbm Reservoirs, David Christopher Bell Aug 2011

Impact Of Hydraulic Fractures On Type Curves For Horizontal Wells In Cbm Reservoirs, David Christopher Bell

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As production technologies continue to increase, more and more unconventional natural gas plays are becoming economical and attractive to produce. CBM, or coalbed methane, currently accounts for approximately ten percent of all natural gas production in the U.S., and that number is increasing. Therefore, it is critical to understand what makes a reservoir a viable option for production development.;Many current tools used to predict the performance of a reservoir rely heavily on unknowns about the formation, and are therefore risky and complex. Numerical methods and computer simulations can greatly aid in the evaluation, but still remain an incomplete description of …

Suffix Structures And Circular Pattern Problems, Jie Lin Aug 2011

Suffix Structures And Circular Pattern Problems, Jie Lin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The suffix tree is a data structure used to represent all the suffixes in a string. However, a major problem with the suffix tree is its practical space requirement. In this dissertation, we propose an efficient data structure -- the virtual suffix tree (VST) -- which requires less space than other recently proposed data structures for suffix trees and suffix arrays. On average, the space requirement (including that for suffix arrays and suffix links) is 13.8n bytes for the regular VST, and 12.05n bytes in its compact form, where n is the length of the sequence.;Markov models are very popular …
