Hydroclimatic Variability In North-Central Mongolia As Inferred From Tree Rings, Caroline Leland Dec 2011

Hydroclimatic Variability In North-Central Mongolia As Inferred From Tree Rings, Caroline Leland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The influence of increasing temperatures on hydrologic regimes across Mongolia is difficult to evaluate from a spatial perspective, particularly at fine resolutions. Therefore, networks of tree-ring chronologies are a valuable means of assessing regional and local variability in hydroclimate while placing recent moisture trends in a historical context. Tree-ring data are particularly useful in Mongolia, where instrumental records are spatially and temporally limited. Here, I present two chapters that are essentially related and complement one another. The first chapter seeks to identify tree-growth anomaly regions (i.e. inferred hydroclimatic regions) across north-central Mongolia based on a network of 21 tree-ring chronologies. …

Development Of Soil Lead And Tree-Ring Methods For Characterizing Atmospheric Deposition Gradients And Subsequent Tree Growth Responses, Bradley P. Breslow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Atmospheric deposition of pollutants and nutrients can have a range of effects on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Despite its ecological importance, it remains a challenge to model patterns of deposition across complex terrain and also to assess how forest ecosystems are reacting to chronic inputs of atmospheric deposition. I measured the lead (Pb) content of forest soils adjacent to atmospheric deposition monitoring stations throughout the central Appalachian Mountains to examine how well patterns of soil Pb relate to regional patterns of inorganic nitrogen (N) deposition. While I found no significant relationship between organic soil Pb content and N deposition, I …

Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Flexible Structures: Low Temperature Deposition Of Silver Conductive Tracks On Flexible Substrates, Phillip R. Mcelfresh Dec 2011

Hybrid Organic/Inorganic Flexible Structures: Low Temperature Deposition Of Silver Conductive Tracks On Flexible Substrates, Phillip R. Mcelfresh

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The ability to atmospherically deposit conductive patterns on flexible polymeric substrates has recently gained considerable interest as an alternative to vacuum processes. This is because it can potentially lead to highly efficient and reliable transparent electrode components that can be used in lightweight and flexible optoelectronic devices such as sensors, solar panels, touch screens, displays and solid state lighting. Common approaches to fabricate transparent conductors include the physical deposition of transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films on polymer substrates. This is leading to mechanically brittle components which are fabricated using costly vacuum coating equipment. It is therefore important to research an …

Pulsars are interesting astronomical objects in their own right but, they are also great instruments to use for physics. Their clock-like periodicity allows them to be used to study the interstellar medium, detect gravitational waves, and study binary evolution. In this work we take a look at a general view of the pulsar population through searching for new pulsars, measuring the properties of pulsars through a technique called pulsar timing, and modeling of the pulsar population using Bayesian techniques.;We took advantage of the immobilization of the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope during the track refurbishing in 2007 to search …

Low Power Wake-Up Signaling For Dense Sensor Networks, Ahmed M. Abuseta Ammar Dec 2011

Low Power Wake-Up Signaling For Dense Sensor Networks, Ahmed M. Abuseta Ammar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In wireless sensor networks, nodes are required to reduce their idle listening time in order to minimize energy consumption and increase their lifetime. The idle listening time is decreased by making the nodes remain in sleep mode and wake up only when they are required to sense or transmit information about an event. This strategy requires the source node to send a wake-up signal before it transmits data to the network. This wake-up signal requires energy and the objective of this work is to lower this signal's energy consumption.;In order to achieve this, this work uses Near Field Magnetic Induction …

Creating Reporter Systems Within Drosophila Melanogaster, Ashley Elizabeth Banks Dec 2011

Creating Reporter Systems Within Drosophila Melanogaster, Ashley Elizabeth Banks

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of these projects was to generate two fluorescently based systems within Drosophila melanogaster for the advancement of molecular research. The first project was aimed to create fluorescent phosphomimetic constructs of m8, a regulator in eye formation. The second project was to create a fluorescent visual marker for heterochromatic gene silencing in Drosophila. Proper formation of the eye requires that only one cell from a group of equipotent cells assumes a neural fate (the R8 cell). The cells surrounding the R8 cell are prevented from assuming this outcome through a process known as lateral inhibition. Lateral inhibition uses the …

Critical Review Of Inundation Mapping Procedures For Floodplain Management, Richard M. Wise Dec 2011

Critical Review Of Inundation Mapping Procedures For Floodplain Management, Richard M. Wise

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Inundation mapping is a major component of floodplain management, providing critical information as to the consequences of potential failures of flood control structures, such as dams. To develop inundation maps, a dam and river system are modeled with engineering computer programs, and a simulation of the dam failure is performed to generate data for the flood. This output data is input into other programs to develop inundation maps. Inundation maps have traditionally been produced in a paper format, but recent advances in computer modeling have provided the capability for virtual inundation maps. Thus, these mapping methods need to be investigated …

The Social Transformation Of Coffee Houses: The Emergence Of Chain Establishments And The Private Nature Of Usage, Dawn Marie Lozzi Dec 2011

The Social Transformation Of Coffee Houses: The Emergence Of Chain Establishments And The Private Nature Of Usage, Dawn Marie Lozzi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Much attention is given to Ray Oldenburg's (1989) concept of third places as environments that offer visitors friendship and a sense of community. However, given that coffee houses have moved from small-scale businesses to chain-owned and many people now use them to work on laptops, this idealized image of the coffee house also may be changing. Few empirical studies have addressed such possibilities. Using unobtrusive observation data on three independently-owned coffee houses and three chain-based coffee houses, this research examines the concept of third places to better understand the ways in which modern coffee houses live up to Oldenburg's social …

Characterization Of M-Cadherin's Role In Regulating Apoptosis And Myogenic Differentiation Of Myoblasts By Interacting With Key Components Of Canonical Wnt Signaling, Yan Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Activation, proliferation, and differentiation of satellite cells are the basic means for adult muscle regeneration. Apoptosis is concurrent to differentiation of satellite cells and dysregulated apoptosis contributes to the occurrence and progression of certain muscular dystrophies. This study investigated the role of M-cadherin-mediated signaling in regulating apoptosis versus survival of myoblasts during the process of myogenic differentiation. Inhibition of M-cadherin expression by RNAi (RNA interference) in confluent C2C12 myoblasts sensitized the cells to mitochondria-associated intrinsic apoptosis induced by either cell confluence or serum starvation. Manipulation of M-cadherin signaling regulated the Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) activity via phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway. …
