This study examined the factors important to the implementation of West Virginia Board of Education Policy 2450, Distance Learning and the West Virginia Virtual School. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that facilitated and impeded implementation of the policy, as perceived by principals/assistant principals, counselors, and distance learning contacts and/or distance learning course facilitators in 110 West Virginia high schools. The 659 individuals in the target population were invited to complete an online questionnaire rating 35 survey items using a bipolar scale. There were 216 respondents for a return rate of 32.78%. Reproductive biology and early life history data are important for understanding the ecology of fishes, and can be used for the management and conservation of rare species. During 2008--2012, a captive propagation study was conducted on Crystallaria cincotta (Diamond Darter), a rare species with a single extant population in the lower Elk River, WV. Also, captive propagation studies were conducting during 2008 on three species of darters of the subgenus Nothonotus: Etheostoma wapiti (Boulder Darter), E. vulneratum (Wounded Darter), and E. maculatum (Spotted Darter). The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the differentiation of cotton fibers by the means of intra-garment and inter-garment comparison while utilizing Microspectrophotometry. Five different colors of cotton fibers were used: gold, kelly green, orange, red and royal. Ten t-shirts of each color were used in this study. Phase I of this study involved using the CRAICRTM QDI QDS II(TM) Stereomicrospectrophotometer to produce a spectrum of the front, back, sleeve and armpit of the t-shirt. Trichloroethylene (TCE) released to the environment is of great concern due to its toxicity and carcinogencity. The microorganisms involved in bioremediation of TCE such as methanogens (organisms within the domain Archaea), sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and Dehalococcoides sp. (DHC) are of particular interest in this study. Three different types of bench scale reactors were constructed to model different aquifer types such as sandy, silty and fractured bedrock aquifers (hereafter type 1, 2 or 3 reactors, respectively). Bird song characteristics are unique for each species, but songs are not identical among con-specific individuals and variations may occur at different geographic scales throughout a species distribution. Geographic song variation is common in many species, particularly in Passerines due to their song-learning behavior. Among Wood Warblers (Fam. Paruliade), The Yellow Warbler ( Setophaga petechia) is one of the most widespread and geographically diverse species. First-generation college students (FGCS) have been identified as an at-risk population as evidenced by higher attrition rates, lower socio-economic backgrounds, and are less engaged in the college environment when compared to their college peers. Yet despite these stressors, many will graduate college demonstrating their resilience. This study examined optimism, academic self-efficacy, social support, religiousness, and spirituality as potential protective factors for FGCS who perceive themselves to be resilient. Two-way effects were examined in order to determine if any two-way combination of the five protective factors explored in this study explained more of the variance in perceived resilience of FGCS. The New River Gorge National River (NERI), managed by the National Park Service, is a popular destination for whitewater rafters, day hikers, and rock climbers. Located in central West Virginia, about 60 miles east of Charleston, NERI contains over 1700 climbing routes. This thesis is part of a larger study, funded by the National Park Service, which studied geologic, botanical, and recreational components to cliff resources in NERI. The use of skew in bridges is becoming increasingly more popular with the number of urban or geographical restraints that require unique abutment and pier orientations. The increasing transportation needs in highly-populated areas require more complicated interchanges, along with the use of skewed or even curved bridges. However, the use of skew complicates the design and performance of the bridge. In straight bridges, girder stress and rotations are fairly easy to predict. Approximately 400 well logs and two drill cores from eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and northern West Virginia are used to construct a depositional model of the Utica Shale and associated Upper Ordovician strata. Previous studies of outcrop data from the Cincinnati arch and Jessamine dome recognized a number of Late Mohawkian to Early Cincinnatian third-order sequences deposited in an active foreland basin during onset of the Taconic orogeny. Sequences consist of deepening upward successions of transgressive limestone and shale, recording a period of sustained subsidence and rising sea-level along the eastern margin of North America. The present study examined how mood influences perception of facial expressions, and how emotion perception predicts differences in social interactions, in a sample of 75 young adults (49 females and 26 males, 18--37 years of age). Participants were assigned to one of the two experimental conditions in which they recalled a personally meaningful emotional event (positive vs. negative). They then completed an emotion perception task that assessed their recognition accuracy and perceived intensity of emotions. At the end of the study, they also engaged in a social interaction with a same-sex confederate while being unobtrusively observed. The results did not …

Direct utilization of coal syngas in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell faces a number of challenges. One of the impediments to the implementation of SOFCs is their degradation in the presence of impurities in the fuel. Phosphine (PH 3) is present in coal syngas at ppm levels, and a number of researches have shown that the nickel anode is damaged by long term exposure to ppm levels of phosphine in various fuels. Despite the relatively common occurrence of bereavement, or experiencing the death of a loved one, there is considerable variability in individuals' responses to that experience. In the present study, individuals' responses to bereavement were investigated using the Stress and Coping Model (Lazarus, 1966; Lazarus & Cohen, 1977; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) as a framework. This study examines how closely representations of missing children in television news reflect missing children statistics from "official" sources. The methodology used in this study was a content analysis of five national television news stations from 1987-2011 using the Vanderbilt Television News Archive. News segments were coded for race, gender, age, the situation of the disappearance, and the relationship of the victim to the offender. The primary objective of this research is to develop a navigation system for use on a rover designed for the NASA-NIA Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts Academic Linkage (RASC-AL) Exploration RoboOps challenge. American composer Margaret Ruthven Lang (1867-1972) is perhaps best known today for her songs and choral pieces and as the first woman composer to have a work performed by a major American orchestra. Though her chamber and orchestral works have not survived, her piano pieces provide an important look at this neglected composer's art. Suicide is a leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Individuals are hypothesized to acquire the capability for suicide through the experiencing of painful and provocative events. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Painful and Provocative Events Scale (PPES), a measure that seeks to identify experiences that lead an individual to acquire the capability for suicide through an increased tolerance for pain and a decreased fear of death. Throughout the past six decades, the predominant mode of student transport has shifted from walking to riding in a school bus or personal vehicle which has impacted both the safety and efficiency of school zone traffic control strategies. In order to improve school zone operations in West Virginia, current warrants and laws relevant to school zones within West Virginia and other states are researched.
